thank you for clarifying. since you are a real chemist, can you please answer this, some lady shared on facebook that she saw on pubmed that a dr said you can use a diy niacinamide serum with just 2 ingredients. water and niacinamide at equal parts, absolutely nothing else, i told her that it would need a preservative, and this is the advise she is telling people. please help me understand why a doctor would say this, or if its actually true! thanks Belinda for all your help
We can't comment on why a doctor would say that but it definitely needs a preservative. Unless they are referring to mix and use on the spot type of product, otherwise it definitely needs a preservative
Good evening, i recently made a small batch of cbd infused cocobutter based balm for my mom. She has athritis and it has worked wonders for her. My question are the best preservatives for 1. Oil balms
2.lip gloss and matte lipsticks
3. Hair oils.
And also are fragrance oils are good choice for balms. Thank you
You don't need preservatives in anhydrous (all oil) products like those you have listed. Fragrance is up to your organisational philosophy and target market - make the product appealing to your target market based on fragrance (or sometimes none at all!).

I was told that grapefruit seed extract, (GSE,) could be used as a natural preservative but I am reconsidering the worthiness of having an all natural product.
Hi EH CBunny, there are different grades available - with varying effectiveness and some containing non-natural materials - so check the supplier information carefully as well as Preservative Efficacy Testing data (challenge results) to see if the version you intend to use is effective (and at what does and in which types of products) and as natural as they say - or use another material!
Look for research on grapefruit seed extract effectiveness. From what I've seen, it appears that organic grapefruit seed extract has no preservative benefit, it is only those produced using chemical sprays etc. and it seems it is the chemical contaminants which act as preservatives not the grapefruit seed extract.
Grapefruit seed extract is a sham. By it's primry supply - it is not natural but a chemically modified extract. Further - reports from around the world confirm it is adulterated with parabens, triclosan and most commonly commercial disinfectant active quats.

Hi what kind of preservative would you recommend for an edible lip scrub? Oil based or not
If its completely oil, you don't need a preservative. If its edible, is that from high sugar content with really low water input? Its impossible to advise correctly on a water containing formula without knowing more details, you need to pick the preservative to suit mucous membranes and the formulation needs. Hope this helps happy formulating!
Hi there! May I ask if what are the good preservatives for a homemade lip tint and lip scrub?
You don't need a preservative if its all oil - but you do need a good antioxidant like a natural tocopherol (not acetate).

No you don’t need preservative in a traditionally saponified soap - the final pH would tend to be higher (closer to 10) and the processing also means you won’t need preservative. Is there one type of preservative that is multi functional? Meaning that can be used in many different types of products (lotions, body mists, shampoos etc.)
Thnx♡
I'm a big fan of Euxyl PE9010 by Schulke - but it contains phenoxyethanol which some people don't want to use. So depending on who your target market is, and your budget, there can be a 'one size fits all' (or at least most!) I also like the Plantservative Wsr by Campo Research, its natural but costs more. It is broad spectrum, effective, heat tolerant and natural. So yes, you can get a one product suits most but it still 'depends' on your target market and product needs a little - you must always check by conducting PET (preservative efficacy testing/challenge testing) before going to market to 'check' suitability because even the best theoretical choices may not guarantee efficacy in the long term, and it is the company putting the product onto the market that is ultimately responsible for ensuring safety which includes preventing contamination risk. Hope this helps, happy formulating!

What about optiphen plus does it do any harsh or burn ? Is it effective?
Optiphen plus is very effective at low pH - but its not all natural. Like every preservative, you have to use the right amount, at the right pH, and select it to suit your customer philosophy. There are 100's of choices, it depends on the formulation needs and company philosophy to make the 'best' choice for individual formulations.

What is your opinion on the effectiveness of Leucidal SF Complete as a broad spectrum preservative at 4%?
It depends on what else is in your formula and also how you are packaging it, as well as the final pH. It has certain applications where it works okay, and others where it is not sufficient. It really depends on a few elements, so I cannot give you a blanket statement here.
