    I was told that grapefruit seed extract, (GSE,) could be used as a natural preservative but I am reconsidering the worthiness of having an all natural product.

    • @theinstituteofpersonalcare6401
      @theinstituteofpersonalcare6401  6 лет назад

      Hi EH CBunny, there are different grades available - with varying effectiveness and some containing non-natural materials - so check the supplier information carefully as well as Preservative Efficacy Testing data (challenge results) to see if the version you intend to use is effective (and at what does and in which types of products) and as natural as they say - or use another material!

    • @clarysage6591
      @clarysage6591 6 лет назад +2

      Look for research on grapefruit seed extract effectiveness. From what I've seen, it appears that organic grapefruit seed extract has no preservative benefit, it is only those produced using chemical sprays etc. and it seems it is the chemical contaminants which act as preservatives not the grapefruit seed extract.

    • @philgeis2338
      @philgeis2338 5 лет назад +2

      Grapefruit seed extract is a sham. By it's primry supply - it is not natural but a chemically modified extract. Further - reports from around the world confirm it is adulterated with parabens, triclosan and most commonly commercial disinfectant active quats.

      I'm a big fan of Euxyl PE9010 by Schulke - but it contains phenoxyethanol which some people don't want to use. So depending on who your target market is, and your budget, there can be a 'one size fits all' (or at least most!) I also like the Plantservative Wsr by Campo Research, its natural but costs more. It is broad spectrum, effective, heat tolerant and natural. So yes, you can get a one product suits most but it still 'depends' on your target market and product needs a little - you must always check by conducting PET (preservative efficacy testing/challenge testing) before going to market to 'check' suitability because even the best theoretical choices may not guarantee efficacy in the long term, and it is the company putting the product onto the market that is ultimately responsible for ensuring safety which includes preventing contamination risk. Hope this helps, happy formulating!

    Hi my question is if I’m using natural extracts that are been preserved by my manufacturer with methylparaben, do I need to declare methylparaben as part of my ingredients if I’m only using 2-3 percent in my formulas , and each litter of natural extracts contains 0.2% of methylparaben

      It depends on many different factors, not to mention which preservative you use. You will enjoy this workshop: Can I use a different preservative: personalcarescience.com.au/Workshops/Preservativeworkshop-3160/ which gives you the input rates and requirements for a variety of commonly available preservatives. It totally depends on what else you have in the formula, and the brand philosophy - there is no one perfect preservative, it depends on so many factors. If you need help with this you can learn this with us, please contact info@personalcarescience.com.au or if you need help with a specific formula we can provide individual and specific advice with a formulation review which you can purchase here: personalcarescience.com.au/Advice/cosmeticformulation,brandadvice-797/

    What about optiphen plus does it do any harsh or burn ? Is it effective?

    • @theinstituteofpersonalcare6401
      @theinstituteofpersonalcare6401  4 года назад

      Optiphen plus is very effective at low pH - but its not all natural. Like every preservative, you have to use the right amount, at the right pH, and select it to suit your customer philosophy. There are 100's of choices, it depends on the formulation needs and company philosophy to make the 'best' choice for individual formulations.

    I love watching your videos. Very informative 🙂. I do have 2 questions though. If I formulate a shampoo but the ph is around 9 what would be the best preservative for such a high ph? And if I wanted to use plant (linseed) musilage what would be the best preservative for a longer shelf life than a couple of weeks?
    Kind Regards
