How crazy is it that this was Michael Giacchino's directorial debut? He did such a good job. And of course with him at the helm, the music is brilliant. Give him the keys to the occult corner of the MCU as far as I'm concerned.
Agreed. I'm sure he wouldn't want to only do this, but I think settig up a nice repertoire with a Marvel Horror mini-series with this, a Man-Thing prequel, a Werewolf Vs Dracula sequel and a Elsa Bloodstone vs The Mummy spinoff (you'd understand how it works if you know the horror monsters stories in the Marvel comics) would give him a huge leg up for being a known director.
It’s his first live action directorial debut but he did direct an animated Star Trek Short Treks episode a few years ago so he has previous directing experience.
Yep, that's the saying. It has something to do with this: the Man-Thing is sensitive to people's emotional states. Happy feelings make him feel good, but feelings like fear cause him pain. Then he secretes acid from his hands that then burns the source of the fear. That's why Jack tells Elsa to act like he's a friend.
It's refreshing to see something like this done by people who actually care. Loved how they cut to the old school style when the werewolf is attacking people. His transformation was awesome too.
Universal Pictures has tried a couple of times without success to relaunch the Universal Monsters Universe. With their Halloween Special, the MCU shows them exactly how it is done.
Marvel likes their funny naming conventions, I mean when John Walker in the comics had an alternate identity, they named him Jack Daniels. They just changed whiskey brand names basically. 🤣

@@Ubernerd3000 Well then I have to admit, I think someone suggested it to him as a cheeky joke. I can't believe that was unintentional, it's too much of a coincidence. 😂
I was a bit disappointed way back when they revealed what the Halloween special is going to be, but I was so pleasantly surprised by this. It's short, to the point, rich in lore, still Marvel, Halloween vibes all around, just a very good piece of content. I kinda hope we get a Halloween special every year now with this kind of vibe
They could use different movie tropes as well. This was clearly meant to be a 30's or 40's classic horror movie vibes, itd be cool if one year on their halloween special they give us like a classic slasher horror that was popularized in the 80's and 90's next time.
I'm not gonna lie: when I first heard that Man-Thing was going to be in this, I was a bit shocked because Man-Thing, like Spider-Man and X-Men, got sold to a different company (Lionsgate, in particular) when Marvel was going bankrupt. They apparently got his rights back in 2015 so it's a welcome surprise to see him here.
They did Man-Thing so good! The showing off his powers really visualizes the "Whatever knows fear burns at the touch of... the Man-Thing!" Also his name really is Ted. Dr. Theodore "Ted" Sallis was a doctor working in the Everglades working with a team to try to recreate the supersoldier serum (because it's always that dang serum). A.I.M goes after him and after he is betrayed he destroys his research and while driving injects himself with the serum However, he crashes his car into the swamp where scientific and, as Man-Thing #1 later explained, magical forces combine to instantly transform him into a slow-moving plant-matter creature with large, solid red eyes.
First comment I've seen that correctly quotes the iconic phrase. 'Man-Thing' should always be the last part of the quote as the rest was written above the Man-Thing title on the cover of his comics.
ManThing is Ted” his full name is Dr. Theodore "Ted" Sallis who was working with a version of the Super Serum. He then ran into a swap after taken the serum and became Man-Thing.

Honestly, I think my favorite thing about this show was the fight choreography. It somehow felt so much more natural and visceral than what we normally see in Marvel properties. Something about the way the guards went up against Jack was so good. Instead of waiting for their turn, they were completely terrified of him and hesitant to attack. Too many times in fight choreography, the focus is so centered on the action that nothing is done to explain why the whole group doesn’t pile on at once, but here it worked so well. Even with the trained fighters like Elsa and the other hunters, there was a feeling of grit and dirty fighting, using whatever was at hand (literally) to survive and it felt so real.
Agreed. You see so much of the Widows like Natasha and Yelena throwing men around, and the Dora Milaje’s flashiness, that the primal brutality showcased here is a welcome change.
I don't think I'd ever get tired of hearing you say 'werewolf...BY NIGHT!' It's the little things. The show was fantastic. I can't wait for more like this.
I love your guys’ reactions. Many months (years?) of fun. And I interpreted the influx of color at the end as Elsa being freed from the “atmosphere” of her family (as Jack discussed with her in the mausoleum) that has been oppressing her for years. I’m hopin for an Elsa Bloodstone series. Thanks again for great videos 🙏
So I was introduced to Elsa Bloodstone in Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 where she was a playable character. She had dual rifles which I thought was pretty cool wearing a tight red suit with an overcoat. That's really all I know her from but it's great that we got to see Man-Thing.
FYI Elsa is ElsaBloodstone a vampire hunter. And I just loved your guys's reaction to the gore. I mean are we sure this is Marvel on Disney Plus. I guess you can get away with a lot when it's black and white.
At the start he tells the Scotsman he can 'almost' smell the blood on his hands. Then when he's trapped with Elsa in the mausoleum he does the doggy spin before sitting down on the ground.
The Hunters are apparently an ancient organization that Ulysses either started {he is the Hunter in the various illustrations at the start and is about ten thousand years old} or that he joined. Since the Trial is to find the next bearer of the Bloodstone, I guess it is a group he started.
I was absolutely thrilled with this one, tbh! Marvel really did a great job on this Octoboo special feature 🎃 Makes me wonder what it's going to be setting up, now that we have our Wolf boy

Soooo... Your intro makes me do a very specific dance EVERY TIME...I should send it to you some time lol Thank you for always bring me joy like Im sitting there watching a friend enjoy a show I love
Man this was much better than I expected and man it was much darker then I expected for a Disney marvel stuff. I really hope that Elsa bloodstone shows up in blade. I'd love to see more of these characters.
Its confirmed that we are getting a new Blade soon so i figured marvel would start being more willing to show blood and violence in a more visceral way. I just hope they are willing to up the ante in Blade cause Blade isnt Blade without tons of blood and violence.
Excluding Spidey which was mainly Sony this is my favourite phase 4 thing. Incredible directing debut from the music guy, Michael Giacchino. Moon knight was designed from the ground up to be a werewolf killer. Love to see that throw down.
Werewolf by night is part of the Legion of Monsters. The original 4 were werewolf by night, Man-Thing, Morbius and Ghost Rider. Loved the reacxtion guys, and Just sayin...I love Ted...lol
The episode has so many things happen in just 50 ish minutes, each scene is tense and has a problem to solve the time management in this special was terrific lol
This is so much different from anything marvel had done inside the mcu. Closest thing would be multiverse of madness. Very nice claw marks in the intro and Frankenstein lightning. A tapestry of the avengers is amazing. You think that bat creature is Dracula? Is that Bigfoot? In the comics Mr bloodstone was a caveman kept alive for centuries of years because of the stone in his chest but here he is dead.
Verussa mentions at the beginning one of the powers of the bloodstone is longevity. But I think they also leave references that this Ulysses is not the original caveman and he is a descendant.
Rumor has it that the creators of both Swamp Thing and Man-thing were roommates and based their characters on an even older pulp-fiction muck-monster called The Heap.
Darn it, I had to pause this video (which I had been waiting for since the middle of the night) because Jay mentioned “we both reach for the gun” from Chicago, and I had to go watch the movie musical scene before I could finish this.
My favorite, most enjoyed, the best Marvel property put out this year so far. And probably the same with whole Phase Four, with WandaVision and Loki closely behind.
Elsa Bloodstone is a total badass boys once she gets the 'bloodstone' she's becomes even more powerful. Man-Thing is a Swamp Thing equivalent he was a biochemist who took the supersoldier serum fell into a magical lake becoming this boggy creek monstrosity with a heart of gold. Werewolf by Night was introduced in Moon Knight were they fought and often teamed up Jack Russell inherited a family curse passed down from father to son.
Jack Russell in the comics has been known to have run ins with Dracula. Billy swan is the Igor character from old monster movies. I love the cigarette burns. Man thing lives!!!! Was a biochemist in the comics trying to recreate the super soldier serum in the Everglades but after injecting himself crashed his car into a magical swamp which is nexus point kind of a connection to wanda and dr strange The bloodstone kinda of looks like it’s connected to chaos magic look at the flare the color
One of the best projects the MCU has ever put out. All my fellow monster fans were probably in heaven like I was especially if you grew up in the 60-80s when all we had was the classics or read those 70-80s Marvel comics. Perfect Halloween content!
I feel like between this and She-Hulk, they realized it's been 15 years of trying to set the Marvel universe up in a slow, grounded way and it was taking way too long so they just said fuck it, and went for it. I, for one, couldn't be happier
Great reaction guys, I was not expecting this today. Good job. The inclusion of Man-Thing has a lot bigger implications than most of us realize. Man-Thing is the guadian of the Nexus of Realities, a crossroads into the multiverse. I have a feeling that location this is going to play a big role in the next few phases. Currently there is only one character in the MCU that knows where this nexus is, because he used it to get to the MCU. His name is Howard the Duck. (I know, I too never thought my Howard the Duck lore would EVER come in handy, but here we are) Man-Thing stops threats like the Dark Overlord from the Nexus of Somonus (the big bad from Howard the Duck's movie) from entering the MCU. (I have to rewatch this, I think there was a dark overlord stinger on display at stately Bloodstone Manor) I can't believe i'm advocating rewatching Howard the Duck, but it looks like it might be important in upcoming phases. (At least it's no longer the worst movie put out by Lucasfilm.)
Was pleasantly surprised by this special everyone involved did a fantastic job, and as the saying goes Jack and Ted's friendship is a much more better love story than Twilight lol
I honestly think this is my favorite Marvel content this year. I didn't know how much I needed this in my life as a long time fan of the 30's, 40's and 50's era black and white monster movies.
When Jack transformed I found myself channeling Jay…let the bodies hit the floo, let the bodies hit the floo!! Plus I just want to hang out with Ted (aka Man Thing).😝
Kirk Thatcher {Jovan} was also in at least one of the Spider-Man movies with Tom Holland. As well as being the Punk Rocker forty years apart in "Star Trek IV" and Picard Season Two.
The Jon Lovitz joke is spot on, but instead of that, every time I hear "Werewolf by Night" the dang theme song to Moonlighting pops into my head "Some walk BY NIGHT, some fly by day..." But since it's from a show from the 80's I completely get that I am probably in the minority of the audience with this affliction. LOL
I have never understood why people are entertained by getting frightened, so this thing I was kinda hesitant to get into, but Marvel is Marvel, and I'm in. somehow I thought this was going to be a lot more scary than it was. so I had fun!
I definitely liked this version of Ted better than in the Man-Thing movie (I was one of the five people who've seen it)-that was straight-out horror, and okay for what it was. But seeing that one of his best friends in the comics is Howard the Duck and he guards a gate to the Muktiverse, they could do some interesting stuff with him if they feel like it. Also we now have two members of Nextwave in the MCU. One can only hope for that insanity to become a thing.
Really charming and perfect for Halloween. The Monster’s name is Ted and you immediately love him. I have to admit when I watched this and The Monster dropped down to take out Verussa I imagined Elsa saying “have you met my friend Ted?” Laura Donnelly and Gael Garcia Bernal are so good in this. Looking forward to more appearances by Donnelly and Bernal as Elsa and Jack in the MCU. For any who haven’t watched Donnelly in The Nevers and Bernal in Mozart in the Jungle, each is well worth checking out (totally different shows - just both really well done).
The Marvel Studios "Special Presentations" are very much going to be a thing going forward. The next one is The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special which comes out later this year.
The transformation and the fact that the werewolf we seen was cosmetics and not cgi was a very nice surprise. The transformation scene imo was genius using the shadows to show the transformation cause everyone knows marvel doesnt give the time and money for their disney plus shows and specials to give us great cgi so the director going that route was an awesome move..

I'm normally a big fan of horror/monster movies, but i absolutely LOVED this special. I even laugh when Ted is on screen, he's such a bro
They made man-thing so damn terrifyingly adorable
Excluding Spidey which was mainly Sony this is my favourite phase 4 thing. Incredible directing debut from the music guy, Michael Giacchino. Moon knight was designed from the ground up to be a werewolf killer. Love to see that throw down.
This was so much more violent than I thought it would be. Consider me impressed! 👏👏👏
“You could drink out of a tuba.”
“You could, I wouldn’t recommend it.”
As a tuba player, thanks for the belly laugh. You guys are awesome!
Jay yelling "BY NIGHT" got funnier the more he burst that out. 🤣
Manthing was introduced first. Swampthing is the more popular but Manthing is just as epic honestly.
Rumor has it that the creators of both Swamp Thing and Man-thing were roommates and based their characters on an even older pulp-fiction muck-monster called The Heap.
Swampthing is a better name
I hope marvel does a 2 hour black and white Midnight Sons movie like this special that would be a great experience in the theaters
Isn't that the other way around, Moon was intro'd in WbN?
@@aligaines8476 You're right Moon Knight was introduced in Werewolf By Night.
Jack Russell in the comics has been known to have run ins with Dracula.
Billy swan is the Igor character from old monster movies.
I love the cigarette burns.
Man thing lives!!!! Was a biochemist in the comics trying to recreate the super soldier serum in the Everglades but after injecting himself crashed his car into a magical swamp which is nexus point kind of a connection to wanda and dr strange
The bloodstone kinda of looks like it’s connected to chaos magic look at the flare the color
Or a fragment of the Reality Stone
This blew me away. Was such good fun. Been waiting on your reaction all day
All I could think about was the old cartoon The Critic 😂😂😂
(I know, I too never thought my Howard the Duck lore would EVER come in handy, but here we are)
Man-Thing stops threats like the Dark Overlord from the Nexus of Somonus (the big bad from Howard the Duck's movie) from entering the MCU. (I have to rewatch this, I think there was a dark overlord stinger on display at stately Bloodstone Manor)
I can't believe i'm advocating rewatching Howard the Duck, but it looks like it might be important in upcoming phases. (At least it's no longer the worst movie put out by Lucasfilm.)
I’m glad they kept Werewolf by Night’s original design
Those who know fear, burn at the touch of the Man-Thing.
One of the Greatest reviews I have seen.
Was pleasantly surprised by this special everyone involved did a fantastic job, and as the saying goes Jack and Ted's friendship is a much more better love story than Twilight lol
The book Darkholde cursed jack Russell's ancestors with lycanthrophy! Same book Wanda used on Dr.Strange.
Book also contained the ritual that created the first vampires.
@@ScionStorm1 Varnae if I recall correctly.
Man Thing was a favorite of mine when I was a kid.
Best Marvel anything in awhile in my opinion. Hopefully we will see more Man Thing and Elsa Bloodstone in the future. Both awesome characters.
I honestly think this is my favorite Marvel content this year. I didn't know how much I needed this in my life as a long time fan of the 30's, 40's and 50's era black and white monster movies.
Being ancient - Werewolf By Night always stuck me with the Theme from Moonlighting by Al Jarreau.
Man thing needs more screentime in the mcu
I'm definitely watching this again on Halloween. This was so much fun and love the old school vibe. Please make more.
Groovy
Midnight Sons could be really awesome in the future if the mcu makes it man
The Jon Lovitz joke is spot on, but instead of that, every time I hear "Werewolf by Night" the dang theme song to Moonlighting pops into my head "Some walk BY NIGHT, some fly by day..." But since it's from a show from the 80's I completely get that I am probably in the minority of the audience with this affliction. LOL
The actual credit for the actor from IMDb:
David Silverman ... The Flaming Tuba
I have never understood why people are entertained by getting frightened, so this thing I was kinda hesitant to get into, but Marvel is Marvel, and I'm in.
somehow I thought this was going to be a lot more scary than it was. so I had fun!
The actor who played Jack Russell looks like a cross between Freddie Prinze Jr. and Martin Landau.
As a life long lover of Universal monster movies, this was everything I hoped for and more! Best thing I’ve seen since End Game!
There were a number of great projects after Endgame though !
Agreed, but this just went beyond expectations like End Game did.
That Jon Lovitz joke was epic lol. Thanks guys wonderful vid!!
The jon lovitz impression killed me😂
Reminded me of Jon Lovitz cartoon The Critic 🤣😂
I definitely liked this version of Ted better than in the Man-Thing movie (I was one of the five people who've seen it)-that was straight-out horror, and okay for what it was. But seeing that one of his best friends in the comics is Howard the Duck and he guards a gate to the Muktiverse, they could do some interesting stuff with him if they feel like it.
Also we now have two members of Nextwave in the MCU. One can only hope for that insanity to become a thing.
Really charming and perfect for Halloween. The Monster’s name is Ted and you immediately love him. I have to admit when I watched this and The Monster dropped down to take out Verussa I imagined Elsa saying “have you met my friend Ted?”
Laura Donnelly and Gael Garcia Bernal are so good in this.
The old timiness of the Werewolf is my favorite part.
This was so Freaking Fabulous!!! Loved to experience this with you. Lovely surprise by Marvel. Plus you both give so much depth and info. Great journey ahead.
I want Michael Giacchino to make a 2 hour black and white theatrical film based on the Legion of Monsters or Midnight Sons teams
Excellent Chicago shout out Jay!
