The tagline for The Man-Thing is "whosoever knows fear burns at the touch of The Man-Thing." So, does Jack not know fear of Ted because he knows he's a gentle giant, or does Jack not know fear because he's already the thing men fear?
I think it was that Jack wasn't afraid of Ted therefore his touch didn't affected him, he seemed pretty scared of hurting Elsa so I think he has some fear
Since Jack is an Lycanthrope he has no control over the emotions of his transformation, also Jack and Ted are actually good friends, think of them of a Groot and Rocket duo, considering how Jack can understand Ted
This was amazing seeing man-thing in Live action was something I never thought we would see and seeing gore in anything marvel really caught me by surprise
There was a Man-Thing movie in 2005. Also, by “anything Marvel”, you may be referring to specifically the MCU. But there’s R rated Marvel movies outside the MCU with blood/gore like the Blade movies, the Punisher movies (especially War Zone), Logan and Deadpool 1 & 2.

Gimme Blade, Black Knight, Moon Knight, Werewolf by Night, Agatha Harkness, Man-Thing, & Elsa Bloodstone in a Midnight Sons movie. When someone gets killed off, you can add Ghost Rider, Nightcrawler, or Magik to the team down the line. Have them go up against someone powerful like the Scarlet Witch, Nightmare, or Mephisto. Wong or Strange could be a guiding figurehead like in the comics. It’d be dope if they could make it an R-rated horror flick. A mature section of supernatural anti-heroes would be money.
@@SpiritxEnigma Sounds good but I want Wanda to be redeemed and be on the good side again. Everything is sounds good. They can go against Mesphitso, Blackheart, Nightmare, etc
Do you think the very good reception of Werewolf By Night is a good part of the reason for Marvel's pushing out some of their future movies, including Blade? They announced Blade 3 years ago? and they still don't have a director for it, but now they could very well have found the perfect match, and the movie may actually need to be re-written to fit Giacchino's vision. This obviously pushes out related projects out--notice how not all projects were pushed out. Possibly only those where Blade, or any character in Blade may be a part of?
The amount of Love They displayed for Jack Pierce the Make up artist who designed Frankenstein’s Monster, The Bride, the Mummy, and the Wolfman was simply incredible. So glad they decided to go 30s /40s style.
If you're wondering why the creature (Better known as Man-Thing) is referred to as "Ted" that's because he's a former human scientist named Theodore Sallis who was hired to recreate the super soldier serum for A.I.M, (He was previously mentioned in the MCU in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and a character from the comics "Ellen Brant" was featured as a minor antagonist in Iron Man 3 (she was the redhead with extremis powers, she's pretty forgettable)
What I Loved the most was the cinematography. I can't remember the last time I saw such good shots in Marvel Studios as they are entering into that cemetery.
For me phase 4 had really good cinematography (if we're talking about the full spectrum of cinematography), Wandavision, Loki, Shang-Chi, Eternals, Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel and Doctor Strange had all very interesting shots
@@beamzsalt4252 every one that I mention had at least a couple of very well done shots that people kept pointing out, that's why I said "the full spectrum", remember, cinematography is more than just "it looks colorful".
I like how in the beginning when he was asked if any of these monsters slain was his work and he said no but he pointed to the monster that is clearly a vampire and saying that he fought that one a couple of times. Classic werewolf versus vampire
A cool bit of trivia with Swamp Thing V. Man-Thing, apparently both were created by a couple of roomates, from what I heard they had a bet to see who could get theirs published first! Lol. I LOVED this special, I hope this is the start of the true setup for MIDNIGHT SONS.
@@folklore6703 well that's what they called that group in the Ultimate Spider-Man show, the Howling Commandos with Frankenstein, the Living Mummy, Werewolf By Night, Blade was part of it at one point, and obviously Man-Thing. BUT in the comics it's Legion of Monsters, Night Shift, or Midnight Sons.
@@folklore6703 Well they're all different teams. Howling Commando's is fun but it's very specifically the WW2 team in the MCU. A lot of characters are simultaneously part of multiple groups so. "Thank you Ted!" 😊 I thought it was a super cute special. And Gael García Bernal is always worth seeing. It also helped the film a lot that it was immediately present and I was captivated. I think Gael García Bernal is good at it.
I love when you can see the love of the source material. Michael Giacchino clearly loves monster movies and cares about them. Doesn't try to turn it into a modern horror movie or a superhero movie just focuses on making a fun monster movie with characters that fit in the genre.
If all the Marvel Special Presentations have this quality, sign me up! I loved it! I love the wholesome ending! I think it’s the best thing Marvel has put out in 2022 and might be my second favorite Phase 4 project next to Shang-Chi. I wanted this to be a 2 hour movie. I love that this had no connection to the wider MCU outside of that shot of the OG Avengers at the beginning. I loved the chemistry between Jack & Elsa and Jack & Ted. I love Ted. I love that Jack just went in there to save his buddy. And I love that this isn't the first time he's had to do this for Ted. I think he is my new favorite MCU character. It didn't really scare me though but I don't know if it was supposed to. My only gripe really is Jack's face paint didn't contrast enough. It was hard to see in black and white. And I was hoping for another Blade tease in an end credit scene.
It is and I can seen where blade could come into this but this whole setting seems way back when like if when the blade film film comes out it will be in modern day man thing cant die really so how would werewolf by night be alive in today unless he doesn't age!

I actually cried when I saw Ted. she did shoot the arrow thing. Man-Thing is a nexus being, Probably my favourite marvel character along side Moon-Knight.
I loved this so much, glad you enjoyed it!! This trivia is mostly for Eric, but Jovan, the Scottish hunter was played by Kirk Thatcher. He was a creature designer on Star Wars for ILM, he was also the punker on the bus in Star Trek 4.
16:13 -- Hallway fight! It's actually the 2nd MCU hallway fight this week. We've seen Ted's wife already -- her name is Ellen Brandt. She was the scarred A.I.M. agent in Iron Man 3.
The special was shot with the intention of it being entirely in color, but Michael Giacchino convinced Kevin Feige to make the short Deliberately Monochrome for most of its runtime. In the final cut, only the last few minutes of the film has color in it (though a fully colorized version of the film would be released the following year)
It’s great how at the beginning when jack was staring at the walls at monsters being hunted u notice how uncomfortable he was and that was a hint that he’s not like the other hunters and he’s different
i'm not an expert on man-thing but he's essentially Swamp Thing with the notable addition of empathic powers and specifically "Whatever knows fear burns at the Man-Thing's touch"
Looking forward to seeing you guys' reaction to this one - I just finished it myself, I thought it was great! What a fun special - I hope we see more of Jack and Elsa (and of COURSE, our fave guy Ted) in future.
"Whatever knows fear burns at the Man-Thing's touch!" was the Man-Thing's tagline from the comics. My brother read the comics when I was a kid, & I loved them! Great character.
Ted is "The Man-Thing" and is the guardian of a swamp that is a crossroads to all realities. Also the saying goes " Anything that knows fear burns at the Man-thing's touch!" .. very cool 😎
I’m a big big horror fan and grew up with the MCU (Iron Man cane out when I was in 5th grade so I’ve been in the perfect age bracket lol) so this has easily become my favorite MCU project so far ❤
Random fun fact: the lady in white with the fur (the one with the sword in her head) was the acting coach of one of my friends. She also played someone on American Horror Story. Neat, I guess
I remember reading the comic Werewolf by Night when I was a kid, but I barely remember much about it. I am glad that they stuck to the classic wolfman even though my inner me wanted a Dog-Soldier-esque type of werewolf.
if you havent seen it-the woman that plays Elsa is in the Nevers- the fight scene with her against Odium is amazing-just type Amalia vs Odium and should take you there but would recommend watching all the first season- lots of really spectacular scenes there and excellant writing
I'm a big WWBN fan and I LOVED this so much...just the fact that Jack Russell is in the MCU just blows my mind!!!! I loved the story...I thought Jack was going to be the one hunted but him undercover to save Man- Thing was brilliant...He also looked so good in werewolf form...my only gripe is this was only a one-shot...although I am hoping Jack will resurface in a Midnight Sons show/movie
It created as a one-shot but because Michael Giacchino didn't want to worry about tying it into something bigger. Definitely didn't make it too far away from the rest of the MCU so spin-off?! Sequel?? Cameos!?? I can't imagine this is the end of things.
Anyone else catch that in the mausoleum, he spun around before sitting down? That's when I figured that he was the werewolf. Also, after watching again, the monster he pointed out in the beginning is a vampire (I think). And we all know about the werewolf vs vampire thing.
Sometimes films do black and white, and it feels kind of pretentious, but it worked really well here for setting the tone. Especially with the lighting and limited use of the color red.
This was so, so, SO GOOD!!! Easily one of my favorite things that Marvel has done!! Both Jack and Elsa were fantastic, and I can't wait to see more. A few other things: 1) They nailed Man-Thing!! He's my favorite Marvel monster, and I am so very happy with his introduction! He was a scientist named Ted Sallis, and as Man-Thing he is drawn to people's emotions, especially fear. His tag line in the comics was "Whatever knows fear burns at the Man-Thing's touch!" He and DC's Swamp Thing are definitely similar, and Man-Thing debuted just a couple months before Swamp Thing did. 2) I haven't heard any reactors mention this yet, but there was a fun little easter egg in the opening narration when he said the phrase "where monsters dwell," which was the title of a long-running Marvel horror comic. 3) I strongly recommend that you watch the Disney+ documentary "Director by Night," which is about Michael Giacchino and his brother, and how they grew up making movies with their friends. It's extremely good! Keep it up Wave runners!! You guys are awesome!
For a pretty much newby in the directing world, Michael Giacchino really knocked it out of the park. I hope to see him get more projects in the future!
it's fun watching people react who are so into all the minutia some of us get bogged down in. You guys looking up characters such as Man-Thing and learning more about a character you did not know is much more refreshing than watching two of the minutia people argue the slightest "discrepancy" from the comics!
Couple of things - first, I realised halfway through that Werewolf by Night is named after the Jack Russell terrier. Second, it looks like they're setting up the Midnight Sons in the Marvel Universe, which i'd be really excited to see!
Blade, Moon Knight, Black Knight, Werewolf by Night, Elsa Bloodstone, Man-Thing, & Agatha Harkness would make the perfect beginning roster. Ghost Rider, Nightcrawler, or Magik can fill in later when someone leaves or gets killed off. Wong or Strange could be the guiding figurehead & Scarlet Witch, Nightmare, or Mephisto would make a great horror villain. It’d be nice if they’d give it an R rating because Jake Lockley, Blade, Werewolf, & Man-Thing could all benefit from the gore.
This is one of the coolest monster movies I’ve ever seen! I thought it would be at most kind of good but this special is honestly a 10/10 for me. Michael Giachinno should direct the next Blade movie. I loved the use of film grain, black and white, and the very old school style soundtrack. And the makeup and visual effects for both The Werewolf and Ted/Man-Thing were amazing. I don’t think we’ll see them in an Avengers movie but I would love to see more of them as well as Elsa Bloodstone in future MCU projects. Also I loved the very subtle jokes of Jack being a wolf because before he sits down to talk with Elsa he turns around in place like a dog and in the cage he scratches his ear really fast like a dog.😂
Ha, I saw that turn he did before sitting down and wondered what that was about but didn't think to compare it to wolf behavior! I did catch the ear scratch as a werewolf hint though.
Introducing Man Thing can pay off later on considering his place of dwelling, the Everglades swamp in Florida is considered the nexus of all realities. And I totally want to see Jennifer Kale being introduced later on. Brother Voodoo as well. But I loved the design of Man Thing, it was pretty accurate to the comics and way better than the 2005 movie.
It's almost a joke at this point how many super fans are dismissive of the idea that there's any good characters left to use in the MCU since all the "a-tier" characters were used in Phase 1. But back in the land of Marvel fans omg yes so many great possibilities with so many great characters.
@@cupguin I mean even that idea that all the A-tier characters were used in Phase 1 isn't even correct. Iron Man, Thor, the Guardians, and the most of the characters already in the MCU weren't even super popular until they were given a chance to have a movie and were well-written. You can take pretty much any comic character and make it work as long as it's written well.
The werewolf design, suit and makeup were great. I'm glad we're going back to a bit more practical effects (my true love). I think my favorite werewolf transformation is in Being Human you can find pictures of the actors in the makeup showing the different stages its breathtaking sfx work. Stunning prosthetics
I'm gonna say it. Phase 4 is going down as the biggest risk and the most creative phase out of all the phases so far. This was so refreshing and different and unique, loved the characters and I love the type of world that this can open up in the future.
10:08 actually, Man-Thing's (Ted) power consists of ACID PRODUCTION, that's why his footprints were marked on the stone floor of the labyrinth He can also concentrate the production in specific parts of the body to produce it much faster and use it as a weapon, that's what he did in this scene
Ted is Man-Thing basically Marvel’s equivalent of Swamp Thing but his power is anything that feels fear burns at Man-Thing’s touch. He’s the protector of the Nexus of all realities in a Florida swamp which acts as doorways to alternate dimensions. He is friends with Howard the Duck who came through one of his portals, Jennifer Kale who is Johnny Blaze and Daniel Ketch’s cousin and he used to pal around with Franklin Richards the son of Reed and Sue from the Fantastic Four. When Luke Cage ran a group of Thunderbolts Man-Thing’s connection to the Nexus of All realities was used to teleport the team around, he was basically their transport.
"Anything that fears may burn under the man things touch" and when punisher became frankencastle he grabbed man things hand to go kick ass together and didn't burn
I hope we get more of these hour-long specials than tv series’ in the future. It’s so refreshing to not have to wade through hours of fluff to get to the main story as with most of the D+ series’. The characters were interesting and the story itself was very solid. This was a successful experiment for the MCU.
As a fan of the classic 1930's Universal monsters this was very well done. The music, lighting, acting all added up to a remarkable special. Even had cigar burns in corner of picture like cinema used to have. Great way to introduce characters we may not familiar with. Ending with "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" Classic!
Might have missed it, but I didn't see anyone in the comments answer the flaming tuba guy question... David Silverman is one of the key animators and directors of The Simpsons, and has been with them since the very beginning. Yes, he plays the tuba, and yes, that is actually his flaming sousaphone. He took it on Leno and Letterman in the early 2000s, and he's played in different groups over the years, including a couple times at Burning Man. Considering Michael Giacchino's connections to music, animation, and Burning Man, I'm going to assume he already knew Silverman and thought the flaming tuba would just be really cool to stick in the right movie.
I... absolutely... LOVED this. Major props for not having to follow some pre-made format, like a multi episodic, or a 1.5+hr movie. A one hour one-off was perfect, not a second of grissle on this, no padding or fast-forwarding happening. And no disrespect to the Kevin Feige/Marvel machine, but this was so refreshing not feeling like it came from them.
Ted's (a.k.a. Man-Thing) fire powers are because he can sense emotions, especially fear, which enrages him. This leads to him, either chemically or mystically, burning whomever or whatever is fearful that he comes into direct contact with. This ability later becomes the Man-Thing Comic's tagline: "Whatever knows fear burns at the Man-Thing's touch!"

The tagline for The Man-Thing is "whosoever knows fear burns at the touch of The Man-Thing." So, does Jack not know fear of Ted because he knows he's a gentle giant, or does Jack not know fear because he's already the thing men fear?
I think it's both ngl
I think it was that Jack wasn't afraid of Ted therefore his touch didn't affected him, he seemed pretty scared of hurting Elsa so I think he has some fear
Since Jack is an Lycanthrope he has no control over the emotions of his transformation, also Jack and Ted are actually good friends, think of them of a Groot and Rocket duo, considering how Jack can understand Ted
In the comics the tagline means if you are scared of the man-thing he can burn you
This was amazing seeing man-thing in Live action was something I never thought we would see and seeing gore in anything marvel really caught me by surprise

THIS IS HOW YOU INTRODUCE THE DARKER SIDE OF MARVEL. A++. Giacchino has to be penciled in to direct BLADE now. And Midnight Sons. Awesome art.
Get Del Toro for Midnight Sons
If you're wondering why the creature (Better known as Man-Thing) is referred to as "Ted" that's because he's a former human scientist named Theodore Sallis who was hired to recreate the super soldier serum for A.I.M, (He was previously mentioned in the MCU in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and a character from the comics "Ellen Brant" was featured as a minor antagonist in Iron Man 3 (she was the redhead with extremis powers, she's pretty forgettable)
also kinda funny, Ellen Brant in MCU had an extremis plant that burns in the 2000 new year's eve flashback
@@JustKrin its definitely improved but 'really good' is an overstatement
@@beamzsalt4252 Eternals was amazing! It looked so good on the big screen!

Man thing have a movie in 2005 terrible movie but this is not the first time we see him in live action
Whatever knows fear, *burns* at the Man-Thing's touch!
This was such fun. 😁
Howling commandos actually (no, I don't mean the WW2 group)
@@folklore6703 well that's what they called that group in the Ultimate Spider-Man show, the Howling Commandos with Frankenstein, the Living Mummy, Werewolf By Night, Blade was part of it at one point, and obviously Man-Thing. BUT in the comics it's Legion of Monsters, Night Shift, or Midnight Sons.
@@dresdenwarlock7978 which name do you prefer?
@@folklore6703 Well they're all different teams. Howling Commando's is fun but it's very specifically the WW2 team in the MCU. A lot of characters are simultaneously part of multiple groups so. Fun Fact: Man-Thing wasn't all CG, he was also made using a costume and animatronics
Fun fact: Man-Thing debuted a month before Swamp Thing. So despite the latter being more well known, Man-Thing came first
It pains me they don’t know who Man-Thing is. Also, he made his debut in May 1971. Swamp Thing made his debut in July 1971.

"Thank you Ted!" 😊
I thought it was a super cute special.
Ted must be protected at all costs.
Don't worry, he can protect himself, I mean he's the fucking Man-Thing
Really liked this one, specially the old school werewolf design
THIS is how you introduce a Dark Universe.

Me too ? Such an iconic character with figures toys and statues and posters not to mention the comic. How don’t they know this? He’s been such a huuuuge Bart of MCU.
I loved this special. I love the old classic Universal monster movies, so this is right up my alley!
I actually cried when I saw Ted. she did shoot the arrow thing. Man-Thing is a nexus being, Probably my favourite marvel character along side Moon-Knight.
I love that whenever Man Thing shows up next we're all going to be like TEDDDD!!!
Man-Thing and Swap Thing first appearances was in the same year (1971), two months apart (May and July, respectively).
This was a badass, awesome, brutal, and creepy Marvel Studios special.
even the opening narration was read perfectly
I really enjoyed the special! Hope you guys did as well
i'm not an expert on man-thing but he's essentially Swamp Thing with the notable addition of empathic powers and specifically "Whatever knows fear burns at the Man-Thing's touch"
So... About that, Man-Thing and Swamp thing were made by the same creator, except Man-Thing came first so essentially Swamp-Thing is his copy-cat
Also the saying goes " Anything that knows fear burns at the Man-thing's touch!" .. very cool 😎
I had no expectation going into this movie, but this was better than I expected. Wouldn't mind having something like this come out every Halloween.
How about something Midnight Sons-ish for Halloween, something Capcentric for July, Alpha Flight for Boxing Day... I dunno I'm drunk and out of ideas.
I’m a big big horror fan and grew up with the MCU (Iron Man cane out when I was in 5th grade so I’ve been in the perfect age bracket lol) so this has easily become my favorite MCU project so far ❤
This came out of left field I knew nothing of Jack but after this I want more not gonna lie! 🧡🖤
Them putting over the rainbow while color changes from black and white to color is genius, also reminded me of wandavision
I tought Michael Giacchino was the rightful heir of John Williams, it turns out he's the spiritual heir of Charles Chaplin.
I was happy to see Laura Donnelly in this since watching The Nevers and not knowing if there will be a second season.
Ted is a blessing
AND I need more Ted, Jack and Elsa in the future
Random fun fact: the lady in white with the fur (the one with the sword in her head) was the acting coach of one of my friends. She also played someone on American Horror Story. Neat, I guess
I remember reading the comic Werewolf by Night when I was a kid, but I barely remember much about it. I am glad that they stuck to the classic wolfman even though my inner me wanted a Dog-Soldier-esque type of werewolf.
if you havent seen it-the woman that plays Elsa is in the Nevers- the fight scene with her against Odium is amazing-just type Amalia vs Odium and should take you there but would recommend watching all the first season- lots of really spectacular scenes there and excellant writing
just remember "all who know fear, burn in the presence of the Man-Thing."
I loved the special! Really wanna see more from that pocket of the MCU!
Is spinning like a superstition thing? I noticed too but thought it was just him being quirky lol
@@g2.a6 I meant that he spun around like a dog would before sitting down.
Sometimes films do black and white, and it feels kind of pretentious, but it worked really well here for setting the tone. Especially with the lighting and limited use of the color red.
It also allowed more graphic violence than the MCU usually goes for
This was so, so, SO GOOD!!! Easily one of my favorite things that Marvel has done!! Both Jack and Elsa were fantastic, and I can't wait to see more. A few other things:
1) They nailed Man-Thing!!
This production made my heart happy. Loved it, will go in my Halloween traditionals lineup.
Thought the actress was Jessica Jones at first! She was so good in this!
If you hear him, do NOT fear him.
For that which knows fear, burns at the touch... *of the MAN-THING!*
One of Man-Thing's powers is that anyone who feels fear is burned alive from his touch.
Hence why Jack didn't get hurt when Ted tapped him.
it's fun watching people react who are so into all the minutia some of us get bogged down in.
You guys looking up characters such as Man-Thing and learning more about a character you did not know is much more refreshing than watching two of the minutia people argue the slightest "discrepancy" from the comics!
I like how they put Elsa in “real” full tread boots instead of a typical women’s smooth soled, high heeled boot or something
Couple of things - first, I realised halfway through that Werewolf by Night is named after the Jack Russell terrier. Second, it looks like they're setting up the Midnight Sons in the Marvel Universe, which i'd be really excited to see!
You know what's funnier? Jack Russell is his alias, his birth name is Jacob Russoff
a werewolf named after a terrier is endlessly funny
Definitely get him to Direct Blade and Del Toro Midnight Sons or Ghost Rider
Growing up near the Florida swamps, Man-Thing has always been my favorite of the supernatural Marvel characters.
I love bringing my own pen and notebook with me to theatres!! Like a little journalist
this was the best marvel project in a while wow i am so impressed, i truly hope they keep going down this road and dont trail off
I wanna see more of Jack and Ted. Like the origin of these two.
I can’t help but think of the fact that Rick looks just like Morbius AKA Jared Leto 😅 And I can’t unsee it 😂
it's so amazing that you guys couldn't see that he was the man thing right away. I instantly saw it
10:08 actually, Man-Thing's (Ted) power consists of ACID PRODUCTION, that's why his footprints were marked on the stone floor of the labyrinth
He can also concentrate the production in specific parts of the body to produce it much faster and use it as a weapon, that's what he did in this scene
The Triwizard's Tournament 3rd task was great in this movie
"Anything that fears may burn under the man things touch" and when punisher became frankencastle he grabbed man things hand to go kick ass together and didn't burn
It looked like Elsa maybe had Red Room training, given that one move she used against the guy with the axe. Just a thought.
I hope we get more of these hour-long specials than tv series’ in the future.
It’s so refreshing to not have to wade through hours of fluff to get to the main story as with most of the D+ series’.
The characters were interesting and the story itself was very solid.
This was a successful experiment for the MCU.
Man Thing looked absolutely amazing in this🔥 fantastic introduction
As a fan of the classic 1930's Universal monsters this was very well done. The music, lighting, acting all added up to a remarkable special. Even had cigar burns in corner of picture like cinema used to have. Great way to introduce characters we may not familiar with. Ending with "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" Classic!
The axe from 6:17 is a reused prop from the Narnia movies. It's a Minotaur axe.
I loved werewolf by night it’s one of marvels best
What a bunch of fun this was. More of this please Marvel!
Marvels Supernatural but with a twist! Wish we had more, hope we get more! Great stuff.
I’m sad that every reactor so far has no idea who Man Thing is. I wanna see more of him !
on the bright side, this is such a great introduction of Man Thing for them. hopefully this increases his profile even more

This is the best Disney+ marvel project and easily top 10 mcu films of all time for me
Elsa was played by Laura Donnelly from The Nevers.
