I hope this is the first of many “common people” EVs, which are just small, practical and inexpensive. It’s so weird to think about how it looked like the BMW i3 was gonna start something and now it’s out of production and everyone is driving EV leopard tanks
the i3 was also $20,000 more expensive (literally double the price of the ID.2all), and had 150-180 miles of range (meanwhile the id.2all has ~280 miles of WLTP range, more like 230 EPA rated range)
so you can't really compare the i3 to the id.2all.
I *really* hope people realize that they don't need to drive an $80k electric tank if they want an ev
@@nickbien More importantly the i3 was a real car you could buy in 2014, while the ID.2 is a car VW hopes to be able to build in 2025, they really aren't comparable at all.
That’s right, but I’ll give that a pass because they pioneered with lightweight materials. I really think if that concept would have catched on, the upscaling could have made it a lot cheaper. I mostly compared it in terms of it being a light, small, people’s car
@@pjetrs I agree, if management at BMW had been committed to the i3 i8 program, imagine where they might be today. Like GM with the EV1, they dropped the ball. I blame OPEC+ and the lobbying going on everywhere. How could a manager at BMW or GM gone against the grain?
@@Damnyoujapan the id2 is going to be made, and there will be skoda and cupra versions of the car
Its a hatchback is why its not coming to the us, Only trucks and cuvs are allowed so that everyone can blend together in boring bland cars
Yeah, they are putting us within their own circular logic. I can agree that a higher percentage of sales lately in the US are trucks/SUVs/CUVs. However, they then say "all Americans want are these vehicles so we're going to stop making and selling sedans here." That therefore makes our only options of what to buy are trucks and SUVs. Then the sale numbers of those go up even higher and they're like "see, we were right. Now we'll come out with even more crossover options and get rid of the rest of our sedans."
To be fair, everyone in Europe blends in in small cars...but i'de rather blend in that way...
So you all wish that everyone driver sports cars and supercars? Do you people even realize that most people rather drive a bland car? Not everyone wants to drive a flashy sport car, also some people have children.
I hate it so much, I wished I lived through the time when they were popular.
@SnowBoarder&Skier People also said the same thing back in the 1980's. I love how people thinks that all cars look the same these day, but don't realize that most b1970's cars even looked the same or very similar. It's called design trend.
So by you logic, all 1920's looked the same?
I think you missed an Easter egg: the rear lights clearly evoke the original Golf.
VW is one of the only manufacturers that make me exited about EV design. This and the ID BUZZ are 2 excellent interpretations of classic cars from their lineup. And they both utilise the freedom that batteries give them to revive proportions that were once possible back in the day.
They have to bring back the Beetle in EV format...!!!
@@electricaviationchannelvid7863 didn't they discontinue the beetle because it was just a lot less aerodynamic and therefore slower and less efdicient than the golf? The last aderation of the beetle was just a golf with a different body slapped on top so if they discontinued it because of aerodynamics - they wont revive it on ev format. Besides - they have porshe to keep making beetles.
@@idk970326 The Wrangler or Hummer has worse drag yet they are turning into EV format... It is just a "design break" I think...The I.D. Buzz/Bus got reintroduced as well...The Beetle will arrive too because it is a logical - emotional marketing choice...
The new steering wheel itself is my favorite part, also side view and proportions
Yes, it looks like they will maybe get rid off this cheap a** touch buttons in the future.
Yep it looks like a Golf but modernised for EV future perfect for them
They went back to their roots it looks like the Mk6/Mk7 GTi and that's nice. They also gave it a 2dr look by hiding the rear door handle. Because the two doors definitely look better. Hopefully the next GTi will get the same design...
Yes! Love the hiding of the rear handles. Missed that in the video - thanks for pointing that out!
Great design, love it. Planted hatchback
I can’t believe this isn’t coming to the US. This is exactly what the market needs here a vehicle in the $20k range and something that might get people more excited about buying an EV because the price is lower to give them a shot before jumping in to a $100k EV
I'd buy this over a $25k entry Tesla not just because it looks like a proper fun hatch, but after owning 2 Teslas I'm sure the build quality will be much better as well
@@Bembli I loved the MINI Cooper cars before they made them bigger. I purchased a Kona N and was looking forward to them making an AWD electric version but they are also making the Kona bigger. Everything getting bigger :( This car is fantastic, super compact but at the same time having excellent design and as you say, most likely proper build. I hope it comes to the US.
Dull minded Americans only buy massive fuel guzzling monster trucks. They are not as sensible and sophisticated as Europeans unfortunately.
279 WLTP miles = roughly 245 EPA miles
Just superb!
One of the (very) few electric vehicle/concept cars which style I actually like a lot 🤩
I also love the design. It reminds me of the big leap in solid design language they made when transitioning from the Polo II (86C) to the Polo III (6N). Here is why I don´t think there is a chance for a 4WD 300 HP version: You can see from the press photos this car has a simple torsion beam rear suspension. The upshot is that without the need for an exhaust they were able to integrate a really deep lower trunk section that adds up to regular volume of 490 litres (17.5 cubic ft). But there is no simple way to add an additional drivetrain to this setup.
Not that Volkswagen hasn´t changed the suspension hardware on the Golf before to accommodate upgraded drivetrains but I can´t see them doing it in this segment on a tight prize calculation.
You know since I’ve started watching your videos I looks at cars on the street with your perspective - early foresters ‘yep look at the graphics at that rear!’ LOL
From what I understood, the car is ready for production, but currently will not fit in 25.000€ target. They have to finish the new factory in Spain for battery and the car.
They will make also a GTI version, more powerful, but don’t know if AWD, my guess is that the platform supports just FWD.
I would pay the premium and take the cargo hit for AWD but a GTI FWD offering is still good enough for me. But US :(
Looks like a normal car for a city for young people. Cool design, easy to park, large interior, good storage space and unlike the ID3-4-5 the interior does not look like it was designed by someone who hates people and wishes them to be robots instead. I love it!
The new old VW Beetle.
I get annoyed that alot of models from various auto makers overseas do not make their way to the U.S. market.
I have a Kona N. If the Yaris GR was available in the US, I would be driving that instead. I agree, but if the data and sales say they don't sell here, what can we do?
@@carloscervantes836 How do they know if an overseas car would sell here if they don't put them in the US market?
@@kjpphotography4764 I would imagine they look at sales trends for attempts both them and other car makers have made. Hard to say as an outsider what they are tracking and how they are interpreting that data. Maybe only small cars, maybe more dynamic like small and hatch, no idea. Either way, looks I think play a good role. Personally, I love small cars, but I would never get a Smart Car as they look so wrong to me. I don’t even fully like the Kona N but overall find it’s a good compromise. The ID.2all looks stunning to me, a compact car with fantastic design and proportions. The slight fender extrusions for that sporty look and stance was a fantastic decision. I love that it’s also electric. I would go for a sport FWD or AWD version personally but if all we get is the more calm power train, I’m also cool with that.
I think there's nothing wrong with VW looking organic, look at the pre face-lift Golf 5, and the Sirocco from that time, it's just poorly implemented in the ID4.
I own an ID4 and I like its design. I do hope ID2 can come to NA so there is more competition among EVs. (price)
your id is one of the best looking cars around, neither exaggerated, neither too subtle but on point
This is a winner of a design. Love the classic clean vw style
The interior may be more impressive than the exterior. The aesthetic issue with screens is they make a more traditional interior instantly look dated. VW has found a way to incorporate some physical controls, particularly on the steering wheel, and still make the interior look modern. Also, not having most of the doors covered in hard black plastic is hopefully a sign of future VW interiors.
I agree but to be honest, the production ID.2 might have black plastics everywhere because it will be very cheap to buy.
The interior seems great too. Physical controls no piano black plastic!
Piano black needs to stop for real.
The next Golf / GTI need to adopt this design language 😆
Anyone else notice that the steering wheel and physical temp/sound controls under the center screen are oddly similar, if not the same as that in the Lucid Air?
Love this design. Great city car and more expressive VW design. The new GTI has the interior issues and the exterior isn’t aggressive enough. I’ll keep my MK 7.5!
Hope it will have the same almost premium feel like the e-Golf had. The VW ID-cars have a cheep feel.
This car looks great, I would get one.
I'm really happy to see that Volkswagen finally does an electric Golf. This job was until now done by the unique, refreshing Hyundai Ionic5; sort of an XXL-Golf, I was expecting from VW. ID4 has a nice exterior (forget the plastic interior), but could also be a Renault Kadjar. Much too organic for a VW, as you perfectly explained it. Too much plastic parts. It does not look like a high quality car. The ID2 redresses it. Fingers crossed, that the interior will stay nice, too.
Great great job Volkswagen! Loooks reallyyyyy good
It’s a very good design. But I don’t think it will cost 25k dollars/euros.
I got a hot take, the bean shape of EVs is a normal thing that we should expect. The cars from the 20s, 40s, 60s, 80s, to my eyes as someone born in the 90s, look all exactly the same between their ages. It'll the the generational thing of the 2020s, bean shaped cars. Yes, they might have their own differences, but generally all cars, all look nearly the same. Manufacturers that strand off from the trend, will either have a high-risk-high-reward and either look awesome, or ugly.
A great piece of design. And a new direction for VW.
I wouldn't mind if the next Golf took a lot inspiration from this
As long as they keep it chunky looking, then it's a go for me. Otherwise, I'm hoping it doesn't get neutered on its way to production. They had better keep the fender bulges.
I miss 70s-50s designs. Cars havent made me turn my head in years.
I love it! As you said -very vw like. That’s what we like. I’m getting polo vibes, especially in the rear and rear quarter.
I've owned three GTIs over the years and a performance version of this is exactly what I want in an EV
the performance brand of electrics of the family are the new cupra offerings
Imagine they make a GTI or R version 🤯
They will
Check out the mg4 4WD
Yes!
If you are ready to 60-70k for it, they will make it
Stop it, I'm already in great pain hearing them say it's not planed for the US. Do you have no mercy?
A GTI version of this would be cool!
It's in testing right now...
Yes, very disappointed that this isn’t coming here to the US. I think lots of us would buy one.
I already gave up on VW, but this brings back hope ...and realy interests me
This VW EV looks good now and seems to be receiving favorable reviews. How will it look in 2025?
good
The BIW looks production to me. The doors, the window surrounds and much of the interior looks regulation compliant. One of those pre-production cars disguised as a concept car.
Correct!
There is a story behind 'this looks like production ready, typical, non-electric car' they said this design was ready in less than 8 weeks, after the change in the leadership of VW. So they took some old, but not production selected designs from the archive, make it more 2023 (unibrow lights etc) and voila. the car is ready. That's why it looks like the cars we remember from ICE, while got these EV elements that can be changed in 5 minutes like lights.
My money is this is released as the new Golf. VW have said they're working on a smaller id.1 ..the new polo?
As for the lack of a planned North American release, US consumers don't buy hatchbacks.
The fender flares, the front roofline, the air intakes on the nose, and the way the a-pillar blends into the hood all screams of Beetle to me. I'm surprised nobody mentions this nod to the Beetle.
Good video, nice job, I agree it looks good and is pretty much what I expected in an electric golf and I'm sure there's some real exciting sh%# coming up.
Its really the first ID that is miles and miles better again in design...and its good back proportion makes it even one of the nicest looking cars in total.
It looks playful but bad ass at the same time, elegant and aggressive. The stance and compact size with excellent proportions all round. I love it. The current Golf got the same treatment MINI got with the size growth and elongated hood, I don't like it. I like the design elements and proportions of the older Golf. Widening the fenders and integrating them correctly(unlike the Corolla GR) was a fantastic decision.
I tell ya, just look at the panel cutlines; that's the dead giveaway if a "concept" is actually a disguised production car.
Those fenders remind me of Ford (Fiesta / Ka gen II) but they (and he wheels) are much bigger here (compared to the size of the whole car) which makes it look a lot better.
I totally agree with you 👍🏾 love everything about this vehicle 💙💙💙💙💙 if the 🇺🇸 could just get the whole suv and cuv thing 😖. We own (2) SUV’s a sedan and a convertible and the larger one never moves. Cars are still in fashion with a lot of us old and young ❤ suv and cuv still have a place. More affordable vehicles are definitely needed here 🇺🇸 and around the world 🌎.
And they showed the Retro GTi gauge option...
Everything look perfect, except the name should be EV Golf (ID.2 is lem) and yes make a 4WD EV GTI too !!!
It's not just the EV's. For the last 10 ro 15 years, Volkswagen design has been dominated by lack of actually meaningful design and lots and lots of parallel lines and folds that have absolutely no function.
This concept car looks more like the former Polo-model then the current one, and that is a good thing. The current Polo is an example of where VW design has gone wrong: boring and way too much creases and lines.
I do hope they will drop the light bars.
I really like those wide looking wheel arches!
Beautiful! And surprising!
I saw these Id2 all over China when I was there recently and I have to say, it's a VERY attractive vehicle and the size was perfectly fine. It's a real shame that VW doesn't bring this to North America. In person, the Id2 looked really sleek and sexy, it didn't scream EV and garish designs. It just looked like an evolved Golf/GTI or some sorts. North America always gets screwed when it comes to great vehicles.
Looks better than Model 3
I think the back loos kinda off, but from the Front it Looks Great!
Looks like the future GTI/R. I heard that the next Golf may be electric. I'm excited...
wheels seem to big for me, I tend to like a litle bit smaller wheels on those kind of cars. Everything else, as you just said, it is more golf than the golf
They are big in size but look great proportionally and the tire still has a good amount of sidewall IMO. I think they should offer a smaller wheel however, for those that prefer the functional positives and I imagine better range. If they have a sport package with forged rims, that would also be sweet, less weight but same size.
@@carloscervantes836 i completely agree
I like this design, but in the interior design, the small display above the steering wheel is not very appealing to me. I wish it would be better designed in the production model.
There should be small battery options for every ev , you order online and have a 125 mile range option and 250 + option
The cost could be 7k difference probably
Those rear lights reminds me of the RS2
Way to go missing the US mkt with the ID.2, VW. Instead, we get the bland offerings in the 4 and 7. Bravo bravo.
Having lived in europe and latin america i see many vw products not offered in n. America. Ok, many of these would not see well or at all in n. America but we get none of these. I have often bought GTIs and golfs. Vw complains north americans do not buy their products but, honestly, they offer nothing i want, (taos is not small and good luck finding a new gti) If vw offered vehicles like this one, their prospects would improve, imo.
look forward to your visit
Love this... but I don't like how the center line of infotainment screen and climate control doesn't line up with the center line of the center console. That's the only nitpick I have. Overall, this is really cool! An R version with 300+ hp would be great, like you said.
the ID.2all is an exceptional design. It would be an absolute shame if this didn't make it to the North American continent.
I will put my money where my mouth is and sell my Mazda3 for an ID.2all if it comes here, regardless of range.
Looks like an 'old' Golf. What more can you want? Did you cover the Canoo van yet? Love to know your ideas on the design of that concept.
This is precisely the EV I’ve been waiting for. So disappointed this isn’t coming to the USA.
This is the best looking EV Volkswagen has made so far. Everything about it feels normal. It's the perfect car to replace the Polo. I really hope they'll keep the exterior design as much as possible, even the placement of the door handles in the C pillar. They'll surely make significant changes with the interior, but I don't mind that. 2025 can't come soon enough.
Yes. It's the Golf, electrified. For some reason, small hatchbacks, have almost no demand in the US market, while, they're very popular, almost anywhere else. And it's not the "Americans are bigger" explanation. The Golf, like the other remaining hatchbacks on the market, is not as small as it used to be. It keeps growing, every new generation of the model.
I've been a fiercely loyal VW person since day one, ... HOWEVER, ... what VW has been doing to the North American ( Canada / USA ) market has been frustrating for years.
Their decision to focus on SUV's for N.A. markets has been counter intuitive to what made VW successful in the first place .... the GOLF, the GOLF, THE GOLF, GOLF, GOLF.
I literally for the first time in my life of driving ( and um not young anymore ), have to look to other car manufacturing brands than VW to purchase a hatch back, due to VW simply not selling them anymore, ( with the exception of the GTI or R, ... yet another example of a counter intuitive offering to filling the affordable hatchback model segment ) ... so to your point - YES ... I fully agree, VW needs to get back to what made them successful in the first place in North America; the GOLF, or in its EV form, the ID 2 ALL.
SO VOLKSWAGEN, if you're watching, ... Bring this model to us, to Canada 🇨🇦 & the USA 🇺🇸.
It looks like a modernised Golf Mk6 or a Golf Mk5 Plus
I'd love to hear your view on the current Renault Megane e-tech. Saw one in all white at our local Renault/Nissan dealer and fell in love
VW Beetle (A5 evolution) should be back...as EV.
I like the bar of soap look.
Its futuristic, but not very stylish.
I have an Id.4 for a year and a half, I love it but I would trade it for an I’d.2 in a minute. Sadly in Canada we love small cars but we are seen as part of the American market where they are looking for tanks for security purpose I guess. He we driving cars to commute or to get from one point to the other, not to protect ourselves against potential gunshots. So I agree with you, this car should come to America meaning North America
They even saved some material on the steering wheel? :D
I’m surprised you’re such a fan. It’s very conservative. VW played it so safe. It’s really an electric Polo.
U.S. drivers start to enjoy the european small hatch backs, as we enjoy some big cars
Why they didn't put the rear vw logo on the right.
I guess it will look better than the center
What do you think of the I.D 2 All vs the I.D.3?
This is the better looking GOLF/ POLO Design. "Folksvagen" A car for People.
I love this design but I think it looks a bit more like an EV concept from ten years ago than a 2023 concept.
If it was coming to North America (sooner than 2025) it would probably be a good car but it looks like European don't want us to have hatchback, only SUV. Maybe they're more profitable than hatch and that's why they don't import hatchback here.
I very much doubt the company would be against selling more of their product. It's just that the american market is generally geared towards massively oversized vehicles. And if you slap on the tax incentives to make EV purchases more appealing not being applicable and all the hassle of exporting to different market, I doubt they could sell them profitably.
And yes, the reason why all car manufacturers, particularly US based ones, push tank sized vehicles down peoples throats is because they are more profitable. And in the case of large suv (aka sub-urban vehicles) and lights trucks is to avoid safety and emission regulations.
i have a 2019 e-golf, i test drove the ID.4 and there's no way i would trade in the e-golf for ID.4. e-golf is way more fun to drive, VW is pissing me off so much with them giving up on hatchbacks.
Thaugts on the taillights boys?
Anyone who's looking into VW, just know that if something goes wrong with your radar detectors, no one can fix it except the dealers
Is that the new golf technically ?
it looks lke the golf 5
The EV9 cannot possibly be described as aerodynamically efficient. It is about as effective as a barn door in that respect. Kia just fit a huge battery which like a huge petrol tank, costs a fortune to fill up. In contrast Tesla vehicles are designed to be efficient in every respect.
Do u think this beautiful bauhaus looking steering wheel will make into production ?
If only they use some of this design for Golf 9...
The design of the ID.4 always bothered me, and you nailed it why. It's not a hard lines design that is a standard VW look. It's as if VW hired off the external design to Mazda. This ID.2all (except for N. America apparently) brings back that styling.
at this point anyone who remotely likes cars (myself included) should just go to europe, north americans all want to drive around in rolling soap bars apparently
But remember, this is a concept car. US don´t wont small hatchbacks. It`s more like a VW Polo.
I live in Europe and this maybe my first electric city hatchback, although the Chinese are invading our markets. Especially MG and BYD
I have a 2015 Jetta. Been a great car but everything they have made since is much larger. I don't get it. There is still a market for smaller cars in the US.
The front overhang still feels a bit too much 😅
The first attractive VW design done a long time... I don't know if they know that with a good software, it the car is just good with a low entry price, they would sell more then the think in North America. We still don't have a nice low price EV. Only the Bolt, but it's a bit too small and not very appealing
The taillights somehow remind me of the front of the third generation Polo (headlights and grill)
VW’s CEO said it is non-US and non-China car. Because it is small and it is not a sedan respectively.
