Thanks Jim. The Super Potato stores are also great in Osaka and Nagoya if you are ever out that way. In Japan, you get spoiled for choice and Super Potato seems expensive, but it is relative. Australia is still magnitudes higher in price than Super Potato.

Great video. Does Super Potato allow you just to go in an film? I remember going to the Nippombashi Super Potato in Osaka way back in 2008 and 2004 and had to ask for permission with my big mini DV camera. I ask because I'm heading to Akihabara next month and would love to film a few shops, but I don't want any issues. Since you film regularly, I was hoping for some insight.

I noticed that the price has doubled for the Star Soldier compilation on PSP. IIRC, I paid about $40 for mine a few years ago from Surugaya. Bought it mostly for Star Parodier, which I also got for PC Engine.
BTW, Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa is known in Canada as Baby Mario, thanks to Famicom pirate publisher Micro Genius. It was easily found back in the day in mom n pop video stores and in flea markets.

I enjoy your Akihabara videos, but it's awesome to see you walking around other neighborhoods. More like this please. Two quick comments... if you don't have them, the game&watch collections for GB/GBA are must owns for nintendo fans, IMO, and dirt cheap. Especially the GBA game. As for factory sealed, I have a small but very real moral problem with people who collect them. Games are made to be played, not stuck on a shelf forever.

Do you think the Japanese retro gaming market will eventually collapse in on itself from over inflation? Even in the Hard-Off's the glass cases are more like museums where nothing ever moves. I understand that the overseas markets have had a hand in that, especially US collectors, but prices will have to drop eventually. I miss the days when the hobby wasn't over-saturated and you could get even the expensive stuff at a moderate price.

I really start to get the feeling that it's always the usual suspects sitting in those glas vitrines at exorbitantly high prices. not really rare stuff but only expensive...

All this retro stuff in japan is sweet but you need to know japanese to play these right?

Actually, if you're more interested in simple games like shooters, fighters and platformers, you don't really need to read any Japanese. If you love RPGs though, then yeah, you need some reading skills.

Don't spend money at Super Potato. I prices are barely better than Ebay. It is far smarter to shop around for used retro games at Hard-Off or Book-Off stores in Japan.

I never understood the allure of retro gaming - I grew up on these games and played many of them to adnauseam but I wouldn't want to play vast majority of them now. The nostalgia alone cannot justify and entire business model that Japan has for these types of games. Just like computers in general, video games evolved and with the availability of modern PS4/PC/Switch/XONE games that have seen major improvements over the years I really don't see why anyone would want to spend money on something as archaic as famicom, especially considering you can play all of the classic on Switch anyway. It's sort of like buying an old Pentium 1 or 486 PC for modern use hoping to get the same out of it.
I really tried to understand it, I even created a fully fledged Raspberry Pi based emulator with custom made components for my previous place of work (turned into an arcade cabinet eventually) - but I still don't see it as "fun"
I guess I'm just not one for the nostalgia...

I know some people who aren't personally interested in retro gaming, but I know very few (if any) who *can't understand* why it would appeal to others. Quite a rare phenomenon!
