- I decided to swing by the Surugaya in Shinjuku to see if I couldn't find a few games to take home with me. Their selection of games was MASSIVE and included everything from the Famicom and Master System to the PC Engine and Dreamcast. It's retro game heaven!

You reaaaally should get a SMS / MARK-III! So many awesome games ♥
Fighters and shooters! Thats what Im into as well nowadays. Always easy to pick up and play for a while!
Who knew I’d love to watch this 🤷🏻♂️🥰🙏
I was just in Japan and staying in Shinjuku, I kept going back to this store. Grabbed a Core Grafx and a bunch of PC Engine games (mostly shooters) to start my collection. Absolutely loved this place and thank you for recording it (I didn't take pictures because I felt weird doing that in places).
watching this video and listening to my own music is relaxing
Mate, the tunes on your videos are seriously good
That looked like an amazing place 👍
Wow a huge amount of stock in that store!!! And the first time I have seen MSX magazines, and they seemed to have quite a few as well. Plus not a too bad range of MSX games, you have to get yourself one at some stage, just make sure you grab at least a MSX 2 though.
So many PS1, PC Engine and Sega games, I would go nuts, we are talking 2nd mortgage on house material :)
We are booking a Cruise for next year that will include one or more stops in Japan, so hope to catch up with you then dude! My youngest daughter is mad on Japan and is doing well learning Japanese etc
Beautiful.
I got half a chub seeing all that retro game goodness
I am a huge fan of yours. I love all your walks across Japan in which you show all curiosities about gaming, retrogaming in this exotic and beautiful country. Thanks for sharing all of it!
It's my pleasure. :) Thank you for watching! I appreciate your continued support.
I was playing Blood Will Tell (Dororo), and paused it to watch this video. You pulled out the same game from the shelf which is quite rare, and very good^^
One day I will finally visit Japan! I love your videos!
wow Jim, you're making my next trip to japan VERY expensive :(
I love fighting games and Schmups. Ps1 imports are pretty good.If I lived in japan I would have to pick all those up
Great video as always. Lots of fun. You need to make one of your laid back videos where you have a beer and just go off on a good topic.
Shocked to see they still got the Christmas edition of the Neo Geo Mini
It's just amazing how Japanese people take care of their property. Also that store is a gamers dream.
I had to sub 🔥 I’ve been watching your videos at 3am when I get off work for about a week now and it makes me want to visit Japan one day.
Amazing video, I will be there in September and surely buying some nice stuff :)
Love the vids as always!
I'd have to bring some serious cash to that store, because my head would be spinning. When you speak of your favorite genres, it reminds me of how I originally didn't love Shootemups back in my arcade days and got hooked on Raiden because it was the only machine not being occupied one day. Fast forward thirty years and now it is my favorite genre. Great stuff, Jim.
33:41 Those Game Boy Player... I don't know if it's a good price in Tokyo but in my country, they're so damn expensive ! Pretty impatient to buy one for me when I'll go to Japan in 3 weeks :D
Thanks again for this video, Jim !
dude the prices on those PC Engine games, most close to $200 @_@ good lord i remember back when pc engine games were like $5 - $10
Man, I was just there in June. Went twice and didn't even scratch the surface of that store. Already planning my trip back, planning on bringing an entire suitcase just for buying retro consoles and games.
Same here, went twice in March. Strangely, bought mostly non-gaming stuff, games were a bit pricier than other stores outside Tokyo. Found it better than Super Potato tho.
your channel is so underrated, I just love to see your videos imagine me being in such a lovely and quiet place like you do with all those games. Such a shame I won’t ever play not even 1% of all these wonderful pieces. Have fun for all of us who can’t do that. By the way just a note: there was a game I used to love when I was little, was the alien vs predator by capcom that I never see around in Japan in those videos, it was such an awesome game
Wow those MSX magazines look great. Jim you need to get an MSX fantastic machine.
I plan to get into the MSX at some point. Need a little more space to accomidate another console with a library of games.
Love Surugaya. Didn't even know there was one in Shinjuku... I've only been to the ones in Akihabara and Ikebukuro. Definitely have to check this one out the next time I'm in Japan.
there is also a pretty cool Godzilla store
I was checking out your channel and noticed you haven't uploaded in a few years. I still sub hopefully you'll post something soon
YES! Five is my favorite on NES and GB, and has one of the best soundtracks of any of the 8-bit Mega Man games. Of the NES MM games, I rank them in order as 5, 4/3 tie, 6, 2, 1. I think 6 gets overlooked and underappreciated. 7, 8, & Rockman & Forte get overlooked and underappreciated too. I did really like 9 & 10, but not as much as the originals, (except maybe 2 & 1).
very cool video....gotta pick up that saturn 2d fighter...from the angel eyes guys ^^
I ended up passing on it in favor of a couple of shooters.
3:48 Sexy boxed Ghost Sweeper Mikami SFC, one of these days I'll find you cheap from a US seller on Ebay.
3:51, another one loose, damn! 3:54 both Kiki Kaikai SFC games loose, both not the highest they can go for, but still damned pricey enough. 16:43, the first Puyo Puyo spotted in this video, seems like there's always one or more of these in every game hunt video you do, and Goemon games as well.
Have you ever seen a boxed N64 DD? I'd love to find one some day but I'm afraid of the price tag...
Man, all those complete in box games look beautiful; and lot's of really good titles too, I'm trying not to drool.
Thanks to Surugaya online, I was able to find some rare as hen's teeth Atelier Aya Ys Figures (from Ys Book 1&2), and OMG! 7000 yen (about $70) for Ys III Wanderers from Ys for the MD!
yikes why did that shoot up in price?! I bought mine on ebay CIB, over four years ago and it was only $30
i will be there in 11 Days, Please sir leave some games for me. LOL. keep up the good work brother!
My suitcase would have been running over. 3900Y for Advanced VG 2! Discovered some new titles. Thanks Jim awesome video.
My pleasure. Thanks for watching!
Amazing Megadrive stock there, some absolute gems.👌
At 31:27 is Sapphire for PC Engine at $1,000?! 😱 It's just there sitting among the $120-ish titles. Crazy!
Where else would they put it, on a throne?
@@Toarcade Yes, on a tiny little throne with a crown and scepter.
Another well done game hunting video by you Jim. Maybe in future uploads, would you be interested on doing a game hunting "JUNK" edition for the channel bro?
Anthony..
I do collect for Gameboy, lots of goodies for that handheld. Though the GBC and GBA, I just don't see as many goodies as the original Gameboy library had. That game you called Samurai Spirits Collection for PS2 is actually the standalone version of Sam Spirits 6, has very beautiful artwork on the cover, like Neo Geo Battle Coliseum, Metal Slug 6, and KoF XI and Neowave (notice a trend, those are all Atomiswave games). Hyper Dunk is the Genesis Double Dribble game.
4,600 yen Game Tengoku with VHS is unheard of, sells for tons more online!
Been to this one a few times. Great store with great selection
Sharon Apple had me in a trance!
Imagine go i ng in there and saying I want everything on the shelves please put them in a shipping container:)
That was great, thanks for uploading this. Fun getting to see places like this that I'll probably never have the chance to check out myself.
My pleasure. Thanks for watching!
Watching this jet lagged from my stay in Japan for the last 3 weeks. I found some great games, and my wallet definitely took a hit, but I'm hungry to go back for more!
Master System is great. I’ve been getting into it and collecting some of the exclusive games for it over the year. It’s definitely more than just 8bit ports of arcade games.
jogos do japão em loga gigante assinado 🇧🇷
This store is awesome, this is where I bought 80% of my games while being there, prices good and the selection of games were also good.
Plus, they got some nice figures and gaming collectibles .
Nice tour Jim, lots of cool stuff! I wouldn't mind seeing figure and collectibles section too some time.
RPG games seemed to have nice price!
Yes, RPGs are very common in Japan and pretty much always very affordable.
You should get a Master System...the Japanese version has the FM sound unit built in and it makes the 8 bit games sound great. And there were some SMS ports of Famicom games that have better graphics.
6:52 I want that Danmachi game even though I don't have a PS4!
This was probably the most impressive retro shop I found in Tokyo overall. Some of the stores in Akiba have more stuff, but the prices at Surugaya were far more resonable.
Pretty cool. Picked up a yellow gameboy color & some games there a few months ago & some Godzilla merch at the Godzilla store on the 1st floor. This Surugaya & Sofmap Amusement (next to Sega no1) in Akiba had tons of PSVita including many boxed limited editions. If u love Vita pick up as many games as you can. Got 4 vita games for a few hundred yen each.
Thx to channel like yours I started a Saturn collection. Did my first game hunt today at and around Akihabara - Surugaya really have the best price and selection (Panzer dragoon 2 at 1300 compare to 2800 at SuperPatate). Going to Shinjuku tomorrow ;) Any recommendation on where to buy saturn hardware at a reasonable price (below 5k yen)?
Hey man! I sent you a Facebook message for a pick up request! Thank you!
This has to be your best video so far Jim. Must be just the great content this location has to offer. I've been wanting to pick up MSX stuff for the longest time, just haven't committed yet.
Those neo geo cd games seem very affordable. Is this the suragaya downtown? (The Anime hobby shop)?
this place is pretty dope, and i agree fatal frame is an all time favorite to. gun gauge is a fun game and pretty underrated if i say so myself. i did checkout that one game called blade maker arms shop and it seems like an interesting game but of course hard to play without knowing much japanese.
i know it's not yet super retro, but PS3 games would be very interesting. Especially due to the not excisting region lock.
Really love your videos by the way, stumbled accross them by pure luck.
Is PS3 considered retro there now in Japan?
Not as of yet.
@@MadPanicGaming How about Wii U
Where are the N64 games?
Hey Jimmy, if you’ll like beat ‘em then you’ll love Mother Russia Bleeds!!! It’s on the PS4, download it, you won’t regret it, mate!!!
I don’t think he has any current gen consoles but I looked that game up, looks cool
Jose Partida it’s fun, but it’s hard as fuck, so play at your own risk!
I've watched some game play of it and it looks pretty bad ass.
Is on PC as well!
Will be going to Japan next month! Love watching your videos, cant wait to hit these shops! My purpose is mostly hobby hunting too hahaha.
Love your videos tell me I have been looking every where for a a copy of vanguard bandits on ps1 but can’t seem to find one wound that be considered a rare game in Japan or is it common out there?
Msx magazine issue nightmare knight 1and 2
Does Silent hill still get that retro love in Japan?
To some degree, it's not nearly as popular as Biohazard though.
Ahhhh, I didnt know surugaya was a chain with stores in Tokyo as well. I thought it was a local chain in Kyoto only
They have locations in Akihabara and Ikebukuro as well.
@@MadPanicGaming when I got back and was browsing through the pictures I took, I realized that I had visited the big one in Akihabara. I didnt know about Ikebukuro either... maybe next time
So many cool PS2 shmups - and then almost none on the PS3 and then loads on the PS4.... how did the PS3 get skipped?
Great video as usual. In the US we have the ability to wheel and deal in the retro stores. Given there’s many more of these type of stores in Japan, will they wheel and deal as well on the retro stuff? ...or are their prices set and no wiggle room.
All prices are firm. I've seen people try and fail to haggle, it wasn't pretty.
When I was a kid you would pay for the game at Toys R Us should grab a slip that was hanging buy a small chain in front of the game that was inside a case I did the same thing with game systems and other things you give it to the cashier and then you take the receipt that she staple to the ticket
And take it over to the window that was completely closed off except for a window opening and hand you the game or game system
Kiddie city was the same way
Toys R Us had a giraffe as their mascot and Kiddie City had a kangaroo
I'm from Philadelphia by the way
Great vid Jim, rambling on and on is a good thing. Pretty pointless doing a vid where you dont speak at all. Amazing shop with lots of goodies if a little too pricey. Plenty of games id like to add to my collection ( lots of those famicom games at like £2/3 UK money is a no brainer ) id fill my boots with that selection...
But I have a question ? I would like to start collecting all of these since I moved to japan few months ago but problem that I can’t play all these games when it’s Japanese language
This one? 〒160-0022 Tokyo, Shinjuku City, Shinjuku, 3 Chome−1−26 マルイアネックス 5F
What's the name of the building?
Marui Annex
@@MadPanicGaming thank you, I know the prices & game hunting in Japan has changed a lot due to demand & other factors but still worth a check I guess.
PC ENGINE BATMAN really didn't - play it trust me.
dude, with those prices...I rather download and emulate....
Definitely a smarter move financially.
wow streets of rage 1 for $50... wtf
Yeah, that whole series has gone way up in price recently for whatever reason. Bare Knuckle 3 is like $200 at least.
are you a play station player or are you an xbox player just asking am a xbox player :)
Historically I'm a PlayStation guy. I don't own any current gen consoles at the moment though.
Jim: How is this case making you feel?
Me: I want to sell my body for sex so i can afford these games lol.
