You owe it to yourself to check out the studio recording featuring Clare Torry as the vocalist. She went into the studio having no idea what was expected of her, listened to the instrumental track, and after settling on a sound knocked it out in 2 or 3 takes. According to her, David Gilmour wanted her to do a few more takes and she said, "no, you've got enough there for what you need." She said if she did any more takes it wouldn't seem spontaneous any more, and somewhat artificial. And she didn't think what she'd done was anything special...she was surprised they didn't scrap the session altogether... didn't know they'd kept it until the album releases several months later! Amazing song, and the three ladies in the live concert you heard did a fantastic job!

Here's how it went. For the 1st test take she did a ohh baby baby type scat and PF said no no we don want any words, then Gilmore asked Clare if she wanted to see the score and she said no she didn't then she did the 1st full track with no words, then she started a 3rd. Take and Clare stopped 1/2 way through and then she left, and the rest was history. this is the way it really happened.
This is the level of class that Pink Floyd has. They put themselves in the background so the ladies could have the spotlight. For hours the ladies gave superlative backing vocals, then their moment comes and they completely steal the show
Back in O.C. Calif when I was 30 my wife heard a commercial on the radio about a P.F. show coming up. Knowing I am a Floyd fan she called the radio station (KMET - LA, “The Mighty Met”) to get information on the concert, The DJ on live radio Cynthia Fox…. said...."Congratulations, YOU are caller number 10, YOU just won tickets to the show and the Sound Check Party before the show"...
I met David Gilmour back stage. He gave us both a signed album that I have in my music room. We talked for 22 minutes. I called him…“The Master Of The Stratocaster” He smiled. I told him his music will stand the test of time with anything from Beethoven or Mozart. He smiled even bigger. I asked if I could shake both his hands that make such great guitar solos, he smiled bigger and said “Sure” and shook both hands at the same time, making a cross between us, I smiled HUGE. I asked him to describe his technique of playing guitar, he replied… “I strike a note, bend it, shake it and then release it”…. Yes, he does that quite well, better than any other guitarist I know. . I told him in my eyes he’s a “Legend“. He thanked me and said “Enjoy the show”…. during the concert after the song “Money” he looked right at me and said…. “On saxophone, another Legend, Mr. Raphael Ravenscroft” … acknowledging my comment to him. It is my favorite moment in over 300 shows I’ve seen.
I asked David…. How do you create those awesome solos?… he said….. I sit on a stool and listen to what Roger, Nick and Rick put down and play along. I listen to what I played and pick out what I like, then I put the pieces together into one piece then learn to play it as one. Our fans are fanatics for our shows to sound like the albums so I must play it correctly each time in a show. I have the concert Brochure and album on the wall with David’s picture centerfold.
All of us fortunate enough to have seen this show live were in a TRANCE.... MESMERIZED the entire show... as you can imagine. We walked out saying.... What did we just witness? That was out of this world incredible.
The way Gilmour just quietly turns and watches at Claudia Fontaine whilst she finishes the song is truly glorious 👍
These 3 Ladies did their thing on this joint! Think you would also enjoy the original studio version by a studio singer, Clare Torrey. She was recommended by a producer, & was asked to, without lyrics, vocalize the soul's transition from life to death. The number of takes, still in dispute, but it's 1-3 & it's magnificent. #pinkfloyd

I was 14 when I bought this album. It was my first record. I played the crap out of it. All my friend's were really into them too. I have the cover art from Dark Side etched above my name on my black marble headstone! It has a deep meaning for me. The thin, white, pure light heading upwards into the Pyramid, which is a symbol of life, means to me that you come into the World pure and clean. You enter the Pyramid and gain experiences throughout your life. You then come out at death headed downwards with the colors of the rainbow representing each life experience. The more light's, the more experiences. The brighter the color's, the better your experiences. Life is what you make it.
I have the cover art on the sides of my black 4dr Wrangler. It looks great and I get compliments all the time.

I have seen Pink Floyd Live 4 times… I saw this same show in N.Y. 1994. The concert brochure said the stage is 120 feet wide. It takes a crew of 60 technicians three days to set up the entire lights and all. The concert schedule required that there had to be three entire crews to keep up. They leap froged each other for 92 shows with 20 Trucks per crew and a total staff of 195. The tour cost the promoters $98.MILLION to put on, but the total profit was $260 MILLION. Nick Mason’s drumming is incredible and matches Gilmour’s guitar emotions while Richard Wright takes us on a Magic Carpet Ride of tones that form the foundation of it all.

Been Rockin since "73", after 30 concerts I finally got tickets to their "94" tour at the Oakland Coliseum. They had a 6' round disco ball rise up and shot it with lasers. The entire stadium and crowd looked like liquid plasma. MEH
Just a little trivia. All the girls were told was to sing emotionally No words what they would feel like going through the five steps of death starting with denial down to acceptance. It's all ad-lived and I did it in one take for the album. It is very emotional too.
At the time Pink Floyd was a super group, so imagine just handing it all over to you bands back up singers and letting them shine. Something you very rarely see.
It's raw emotion of the transition into leaving life, stages of dying, anger, fear, resistance and acceptance.
So as this song is a kind of meditation on death, they asked people around the studio if they were afraid of dying. The words you hear spoken at the beginning are one of the answers they got: "And I am not afraid of dying. Any time will do, I don’t mind. Why should I be frightened of dying? There’s no reason for it. You’ve got to go sometime.” Welcome to the Pink Floyd fan club.

Time , which you listened to before, runs directly into ‘the great gig in the sky’ on the album. Each side is effectively a non stop piece of music with each song running into the next one. Once you have exhausted the reactions, do yourself a favour, take your headphones into a dark room and play Dark Side of the moon end to end. Its an experience rivalling any great movie.
There's a reason why music of the era was called "album-oriented rock", and Pink Floyd is it.

Absolutely love this! Amazing live performance but I do also love the studio version. It was to be representing the stages of death. Not wanting to let go, them accepting death and then the actual passing. So powerful. “I’m not frighten of dying, we all have to go sometime”.
Much respect to Clare Torry. She was crying towards the end, and a little more after the recording stopped. She thought it was ruined, but the band loved it. Her raw emotion is exactly what they wanted. Thankfully she finally got paid years later for it.
Saw them May 26, in Kansas City. I went with friends and had not listened to the band except for Another Brick in the Wall. This song just amazed me, I went and bought all the cassette tapes I could and have been a fan since.

The original can't be replicated, but the thing I love about these 3 ladies is they each bring something unique to the table. The other thing to remember is that it's one thing to go flat out in a studio in 2 - 3 takes but quite another to go on a long tour and put your voice through this over and over again. It's hard to believe that Sam Brown (blonde) is actually a ukalele playing folk singer. Just shows how versatile she is. She also had a hit called "Stop" which is amazing.
My thoughts exactly. I love the original by Clare Torrey, but I also love seeing the passion and emotion these 3 ladies put into it - live, in front of thousands, with no chance of a "Oops, sorry, can we go again?". Both versions are brilliant.
Of course, it can be rightly argued that without Clare doing it first, these three would have nothing to "copy".... 😉
In a way, so envious that you get to experience these great tracks for the first time!
But the impact this music has on you never fades!
On the original release. One women did all of the 'Vocals", she could not do it again'. They tried ways of her making it sound. (As I Rumor has it.) She free styled her soul in to it. So they went with the first take. It worked! But it's very hard to recreate. Bravo to these Lady in this Video, they do a Great job of making the Music last! Listen to the Album version. it's a master piece.
You're absolutely right, you never know what Pink Floyd has in store for you. I've heard them described as always playing the perfect note you didn't know you needed to hear. While the original on Dark Side of the Moon was beautiful and epic and a lot of people feel it's the better version, I like this one better. Makes me cry a little every time I hear it. You really can't go wrong with anything from this concert. One of These Days is another favorite. It's a banger.
I agree with you. It was amazing what the original singer pulled off in the studio in 1973, a young white English session singer , she totally deserved writing credits on this. But I will also say that since this song represents three stages of death (maybe more but it’s always been basically three distinct parts), it works well having three different singers sing each part. In David Gilmour’s 2016 tour, he even had a guy as one of the three, and it works equally well. I have never heard a bad performance of this song, no matter who is singing. Because we are all unique and we will all experiences the stages of our own deaths differently. I can’t define the perfect version of this. They are all equally good for me.
FTB - "One in a lifetime" describes their music flawlessly. Your expression of "Drowning" exquisitely defines the sensation of journeying into the Pink Floyd rabbits hole. The original track features vocalist Claire Torry who was asked to improvise and visualize the vocals as if she was an instrument. Apparently it only took two takes.
Lucky enough to be at this concert... without doubt the best concert ever! Just beyond incredible...
I have had the pleasure of seeing many covers of this track (including this one - Claire isn't around, therefore it is a cover). This one's tidy, taking 3 ladies to do 1 Artist's job. The other covers that I've seen almost match Claire *as solo singers*. Only been listening for 50 years butt
To me this is the greatest single recording ever done. Catches lightning in a bottle. My mother unfortunately thought it was just "screaming" back in the day.
My young friend you are going down an amazing rabbit hole. Personally l have been in this rabbit hole since 1974. An album you must look into is Animals. I was fortunate enough to see this concert. Needless to say it was amazing.

Listen. There is a Pink Floyd cover band, Brit Floyd. These guys and gals are absolutely phenomenal. Their musical director played at one of David Gilmours birthday parties...just amazing.
They always cover The Great Gig in the Sky and when I say it brings chills, omg.....!!! I'm always left with tears welling up and goose bumps!! Seen their show about 25 times and every time the audience goes crazy for this one!

The great gig in the sky, women singing from there souls. Some think it's about the journey to heaven, denial at first, then acceptance. Your one of the better reviewers. The man who produced that album was Alan Parsons, who later would make his own music, including the album I robot, that was good. Try these two songs. PC by the band testament ( pretty heavy) and witch hunt , by rush. Please do them with the lyrics.

Whether you do it as a reaction or just sit at home, you need to listen to Dark Side of the Moon from start to finish. The amazement you show for the these songs will be amplified 100 fold. This record is so good that it spent 15 years, yes years on the top 100. It doesn't get any better than this.
The studio version from Darkside of the Moon is a must ,,,as great as they are live, nothing compares to the album version, do yourself a favor and listen to it.
Wonderful to get a fresh take on Pink Floyd all over again. It is like experiencing them again for the first time myself 👏 😅

As others have said I'm sure, the studio version was recorded in the middle of the night, the vocalist was a young British white session singer. The band didn't know what exactly they wanted, until they heard it and let her do her thing. They had already been performing this live without vocals, but Clare Torrey just nailed it, she should have gotten full songwriting credits on it. Despite how good her original was, I come back to this live performance a lot. The three singers, each bringing their own interpretation into it, the three stages of the song and coming to terms with impending death. It just works so perfectly. I love what you said, about not a single word being sung but we still completely understand everything. An amazing piece of art this song is.
I really appreciate how you break it down and explain your feelings about the music. I feel the very same way you do, still the goosebumps, the jaw dropping “Wow” and I have been listening to PF for over 35 years. My first PF album when I was a teenager was Momentary Lapse of Reason. The instrumental, “Terminal Frost” is one of my favourites of the album. It takes you on a sound journey. Just amazing.

This was the best live show I have ever attended. Durga McBroom (the second soloist) has the voice of an angel. The only singer to compare to C. Torry's original version (which Torry completely improvised, and as well did ALL female parts herself).
I HIGHly recommend you check out their movie The Wall after getting through all the songs on that album.

First singer is Sam Brown who had a number of top ten singles and albums. Friend of George Harrison and sang at the Concert for George. Lost her voice a few years ago.

The power of soul
The “lyrics”, the “I never said I was afraid of dying” part…. That happens throughout the album. It’s not any of the band members saying those parts. They recorded lots of people with some guided questions. Paul McCartney even was recorded for some of that. In the end, they went with the recordings of some random people, “roadies” for the band, real working class people, and didn’t include the more famous people’s recordings because they didn’t come off as naturally. It was the right choice, one of the things that makes this the best album of all time, probably never to be topped.

You need to hear the official original release. Clare Torry who sings is no joke….this sounds great too but the original is like being in Heaven, peace!

The original was 1973. I believe this one was 1994 in New York. You got to hear the original studio version. She doesn't have the voice she once had.

For a similar musical revelation experience check out the song ‘Roundebout’ by the band YES which was produced in 1971 along with the song ‘The Musical Box’ by Genesis also from 1971. These two bands went toe to toe with Pink Floyd from 1971 to around 1977 each producing amazing album after amazing album. Check these two bands out and compare their styles. There could be another two progressive rabbit holes for you to explore.

Great gig in the sky is one of those songs that only the original recording IS the song. The bar was set so high on it that any rerecording fails in comparison.
Another great version of this is in Venice. This is about death. First part fighting it. Second realization there is nothing you can do and the last acceptance.
One of the best is "sorrow" on the Delicate sound of Thunder
before you listen to the Wall album, You should watch Pink Floyd - The Wall 1982 ‧ Musical/Drama ‧ 1h 35m You will understand The Wall so much better

Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon Album is in essence about Death.
An event that all of humanity is destined to experience at one point or another, in one way or another be it our own death or the death of a loved one. Depending on each individual's level of compassion and acceptance of death, persistent traumatic grief can cause us to cycle through the 5 stages of grief:
denial,
anger,
bargaining,
depression,
acceptance.
These stages are our attempts at processing change brought about by the traumatic loss of a loved one or the acceptance of ones own mortality and to protect ourselves while we adapt to our new reality. A reality that will be grounded in how well, or not, we managed through the 5 stages of grief mentioned above.
Pink Floyd's Great Gig in the Sky is about such a journey. The opening lyrics start with denial and end with acceptance.
Evening, my brother in music. As you are finding out for your own self. There is a massive, if not infenite universe of incredible music to discover. It's a quest, a journey that has no end. No walls. No restrictions. There is an assortment of flavours & styles. You can discover new songs & embrace them. Knowing you don't have to give up loving & enjoying the music you already enjoy. There are times when something can make me so fucked off, that I want to really wanna cause a riot. I can listen to pink floyd, picking the trax that relax. If I need to get myself in gear to step out of my yard & deal with the fear peddled by the TV People year after year. I choose some real millitant shit. Early Ice-T, with Evil-E burning up the decks. Wu tang clan. It's all out there for everyone to discover & enjoy.

This was an amazing live version I'd not seen. Fantastic interpretation. You would really like the original studio version. Please give it a listen even if you don't do a video about it. It is worth it.

The thing people don't get is that this song is about the human reaction to death . the first is fear followed by anger then sorrow and finally acceptance .

Sorry joining the conversation late, but the "vocals" or "lyrics" at the beginning were, as I understand it, a script they gave the maintenance guy in Abbey Road studio where the original album track with Clare Torey was recorded, to read -- something like: "I'm not afraid of dying; there's no reason for it; we all got to go sometime" ... And those 3 girls did Clare Torey justice in portraying the stages of DYING, again not looking it up online, but -- DENIAL, RAGE, ANGER, RESIGNATION, ACCEPTANCE ....... or something like that, that we will ALL eventually experience
