    Nice reaction, too many Floyd fans telling you it's the wrong version, or you have to listen to the whole album in order etc etc
    While thats true , you can still enjoy live versions like this.
    Keep up with more Pink Floyd, especially the Pulse concert, can't go wrong. Pink Floyd fans chill out

    I agree that Claire Torrey did the best version of the vocal in one hit and can't be replicated, but these girls have to do this night after night which puts an enormous strain on the vocal chords especially Sam brown who uses a lot of rasp. Still makes my eyes leak.

  • @glennbrock6560
    @glennbrock6560 2 года назад +28

    The instrument is a pedal steel guitar, being played by David Gilmour who normally sings lead vocals and plays all the nasty guitar, the singers here in order are Sam Brown, she has some solo work u can check out, Durga McBroom was the 2nd lady, Claudia Fontaine was the 3rd.
    Keyboardist - Richard Wright, Nick Mason on Drums...Guy Pratt- Bass guitar...Jon Carin - 2nd keyboard and various instruments

      And it took all three to do what Clare Torry did all by herself.

    • @ianfortier6796

      @Brad Mannion - I wouldn't agree. I think any of the 3 could have done the full song live, but how would the other 2 feel if 1 got the showcase. It only makes sense to give each a section of the song. Kind of a short sighted comment, imo. Don't get me wrong, I love Claire's version and her architecture of the vocals in this song, but all 3 singers here have fuller and more complete vocal range imo.

      The only reason that Pink floyd fans will tell you the Clare Torry version is the best is because it's the original. I personally like more the one on the pulse. Clare Torry was just a studio back vocalist. Sam Brown is a much better and more complete singer in my opinion. That's one of the reasons why Sam Brown was back vocalist on Division bell album and Pulse live.

    • @ianfortier6796
      @ianfortier6796 2 года назад +4

      @ I H - I happen to agree with you about why people tend to gravitate towards Claire's version but I prefer this version above all as well. Sam Brown, Durga McBroom, and Claudia Fontaine are all better and more well rounded than Claire and I love Claire's rendition. The two times I heard Claire do this on live recordings, granted they were from '87 and '90 so she was further along in age, she struggled. HARD.

    Claudia Fontaine had such a great voice. So sad she passed from an illness back in 2018, she was just 57. A much in demand backup/background vocals singer not just for Pink Floyd but also for Elvis Costello, Joe Cocker, Julia Fordham, The Jam, Howard Jones, the list goes on, and was lead vocalist in the Beatmasters and formed the backing singing trio Afrodiziak with Caron Wheeler and Naomi Thompson in 1982. RIP.

    Nice reaction bro. It hasn't been mentioned but just to let you know this Great Gig in the Sky is about dieing and ascending. It is done in 3 parts. I think Fear, Resistance and Acceptance. I hope you continue reacting to Pink Floyd. Put on your headphones, close your eyes and they will take you to new places. Watching the entire Pulse concert is a drug without drugs. Drugs I'm sure that helped inspire them.

    I met David Gilmour back stage at a concert in California 1984. I asked him about the meaning - reason for “Great Gig In The Sky”…. David’s answer was something like…. .I was asked if Pink Floyd would ever do a song about Religion like some others have… so I said, You are referring to the great gig in the sky they call “God“. What words could be used to describe all the pain and suffering caused by religious beliefs. All the crying and wailing from mothers who lost their husbands or sons in a war fought over religious differences. The only vocals should be just the sound of a mothers crying with pain and suffering. That’s the true intentions of the song. We didn’t want to make that public so as to avoid any religious boycott like what happened to the Beatles after Lennon made his comment about Jesus. We could not tell the singer so as to avoid her making any comments that would end up in the media. The speaking heard at the beginning was recorded at Apple records prior to the recording of the song. Roger Waters placed a recorder at the door asking anyone who walked by to answer some questions into the microphone. The janitor stopped and recorded his answer to the question….”Are You Afraid Of Dying”?. It was decided to add the recording to the start of “Great Gig In The Sky”. It leads people to believe the song is about dying, but that is actually not the case. The Great Gig In The Sky…is GOD … The incredible vocals from Clare Torry happened when she did not know what they wanted. David Gilmour told her to pretend her voice is a Saxophone like on other songs on the album, no words, just tones. Results are legendary.

    You have to hear the studio version. Clare Tory is the singer who co-wrote this song as she improvised much of it. Her version is on the album but doesn't get heard as often as modern audiences look to video clips and her performance wasn't filmed. It is the definitive version.

    The meaning of this performance is a Pearson experiencing death "great gig in the sky" as they die they reexperience their life from start to end the vocalist was given the task to explain this but couldn't use any words. The 1st vocalist to do it was Clare Torrey in the studio version and was the very best at it she actually apologized for her performance, thinking she had done bad, but Pink Floyd loved it and it was used her performance was so good that Pink Floyd renegotiated her compensation for doing it. There have been many other vocalists that were very good also but none as good as Clare Torrey. Great reaction.

    Here on YT there's an excellent interview of Clare Torry, the singer of this amazing track on the original Dark Side Of The Moon album. It's a really interesting interview in which she talks about how the song came about and her role on it. These live performances such as this video a great, but they don't hold a candle to Clare's performance. Anyway, here's a link to the interview: ruclips.net/video/mIW7xZSlZoM/видео.html

    The ORIGONAL version was even better. Roger Waters (Bass - Song Writer) David Gilmore (Amazing Guitar - Song Writer), Richard Write (RIP - Keyboards), and Nick Mason (Drums). Clare Torry was the original female vocalist on this song. She improvised the entire thing. The recording you were listening to was AFTER the breakup, when Roger left.
