When Richard Wright, the keyboardist, died in 2008, it was this song that was sung at his funeral by Durga Mc Broom, one if theBackgroundsinger ofthePinkFloydWorld Tour. This was his express wish during his lifetime. The rumor persists that none other than Jon Lord accompanied on the piano.
😒 Riiiiiiiiiight! 🙋🏿♀️ 60 here & weird seeing kids react to Concerts I saw in NY/NJ, mostly at MSG. 🤭 I couldn't go to all the MSG Zep shows I see everyone react to until HS. Then I used Bday, Xmas & Babysitting Money to buy my first nosebleed section tickets. 😳😒 Then I had to see EVERYBODY that played MSG, Radio City, The Coliseum, Giant Stadium. 😉 Retired early, so now I can spend money on Comic Con Tickets instead of Monthly MetroCards to get to work 5 days a week. 🤗 And it's GLORIOUS! 🥰🐰
If this gave you goosebumps you should definitely listen to the original studioversion from "Dark Side of the Moon" with Claire Torry. "Time" floats directly into "The Great Gig...". It's about submitting to death, and Claire sings tears out of my eyes each and every time... through the last 49 years.
This is meant to portray in raw emotion the transitions into leaving life, the stages of dying, starting with denial, anger, fear, resistance then finally acceptance, it is amazing and makes me tear up everytime I listen to it, I'm glad you were able to listen to a Master piece, the Pink Floyd rabbit hole keeps getting deeper my friend, Enjoy !! God Bless.
Clare Torry sang the original version of Great Gig in the Sky by herself in one session. It is the 5th track on the Dark Side of the Moon album. No one performer has been able to replicate her perfect voice performance. I URGE YOU to listen to the entire Dark Side of the Moon album from beginning to end. It brings ALL the feels.
I was born close to when this album was created and 40+ years of loving this band has been my pleasure. I would like to thank my older sister for buying The Wall on vinyl and not locking her door. How lucky we are to have lived in the time of Pink Floyd.
I was there on that tour. Stood in line (first in line) at 3:00 AM at the door at the mall for the TicketMaster outlet. Got up and got the 7th row dead center. Actually got tickets for both nights, there were 2 shows that week. Both were amazing but glad I got tickets as one of the shows was a very rare show where they played the entire Dark Side of The Moon album in one show. Both nights were spiritual experiences. I have seen some of the greatest bands on the planet. Floyd.....they are and always have been in a league of their own.
Ah the genius that is Pink Floyd - This is finest rock music you will ever hear - late at night a few beers, looking at the stars, Floyd makes total sense.
I first heard this 50 years ago, and because it was so different and had no lyrics, I was not impressed. What an a*hole! Now that I understand its genesis and meaning, it has become one of my most treasured PF songs. Whether the studio version or the Pulse version, the production values are outstanding. I love when Wright and Gilmour exchange smiles of joy, I always like it when performers reveal what a good time they are having. Glad you were gob-smacked.
My favorite band of all time and This was my fav concert of all time. Their stunning vocals taking u thru the stages of death without a word. Powerful and beautiful. Thanx much, Peace
This version of this song makes me WEEP every time I hear it. The first singer's name is Sam Brown, she had a massive worldwide hit of her own in the late 80s called 'Stop', which is quite superb. Check it out. Also do the finale to that concert, 'Run Like Hell', if you haven't already. It will blow your mind.
Sam brown (blonde) did a pretty good job considering she's a ukulele playing folk singer. I was at this very concert and the girl next to me collapsed from emotion during this song. I was 45 at the time and in floods of tears throughout this gig, but this one destroyed me. It took me 3 days recover and I re-live it every time I watch it. A truly life changing experience.
I'm 42, and this song almost brings me to tears every time I hear it. It's an amazing song, so much is said, without a single word being spoken (besides the little irrelevant audio clip of the old man in the beginning). The 3 parts these ladies sing remind me of the 3 stages of life. The first woman is vibrant and full of energy (like a child) and toward the end starts to sound a bit "angry" (like a teenager), and feels like she singing of "youth". The second woman is more measured but still has the energy to put out strength in smaller doses (like an adult, strong and capable, but not as wild as a child) and seems like she represents "adulthood". The final singer sounds more "composed" and lethargic. Like a wise elderly person trying to tell you something in their twilight years and finally fades off at the end as if an person in their old age whose candle is burning down to nothingness. Her part sounds to me like reflection and finality (death). The studio version doesn't sound the same, but the vibe these three give, and the story their voices tell make THIS version, my absolute favorite.
Duck get the whole album! And fly away!!!!!!!! Fab reaction!!!! My friend below I am 65 !!!! WE know what we talking about and go get the album hun. Sam Brown is Joe Browns daughter Joe is a mich respected musician nicknamed the chirpy cockney. He had hits in the late 50s and well into the 60s with his band called the bruvvers. He also appeared in films and on stage. Her mother was also a prolific singing artist so she has quite a musical background. Thanks for the reaction and don't forget to react to Nightwish😊😊
Hubby and I were at the Division Bell concert in London right by the stage while it was being filmed, the gig was fantastic, we were in St John Ambulance as volunteer ambulance crew, and boy did we enjoy it luckily no casualties that night.
I love this version. Great reaction. I love the smile on the third singer during the ending fade out. Yeh, we nailed it and know it lol!!! Recommend live pulse KEEP TALKING for a surprise.
Lucky to see Pink Floyd 4 times in my lifetime. Love the reactions. Love it when people really get it about certain artists and what elevates them above others. You just feel it. I would add Tool to that list. Both very unique bands that sound like no other.
I absolutely love this, but the fact is it took these three talented ladies to do what Clare Torre did by herself on the studio version. Still, this is just so good and thank you for the PF reaction.
Mollyboy! I feel like i'm watching my younger brother find my albums. You are amazing and I love what you do. Please, if you haven't seen it, show us your reaction to Queen Live at Wembly(forgive my spelling please) Stadium. Freddy Mercury is one of the greatist voices of all time and the way he worked the crowd during the call and response section is LEGENDARY. Stay Healty, Stay Safe!
The part of this song that is almost always missed is that it is about the "Big Gig In The Sky" - Death and Dying (as introduced by the voices talking in the background). Fear, anxiety, horror, turning to calm, acceptance and peace. Listen to the song again... "I am not afraid of dying, why should I be? We all have to go sometime".
Hi. Glad to see you did this one. I thought you might like it. If you can imagine the studio version was all done by one female vocalist named Claire Torry. A studio singer who improvised this in just 2 or 3 takes. In fact 2 because during the third take she knew she had given her best during the first two. It was magic.
I answer to you, but it s for everyone who say “studio version is better” … no Studio version is awesome. And this live voice cover is awesome, really awesome too. Nothing to say more. This live is incredible. Congratulations for singers!!! Awesome .
@@shecaso not really. But anyway, you can’t understand , and I don’t ve (or want to take the time to explain U) Just ll say : this is a live performance, and they do a beautiful version .. I don’t understand english so good . But your answer make me fill u re a dumb.
Gilmour is indeed playing a type of slide guitar. It's called a lapsteel and has been used heavily in Country music since forever. And BTW, this is one of the greatest non-lyric songs ever sung and recorded IMHO. Beautiful.
Saw her/them do this on this tour at Earls Court in 1994. She was rumored as having a relationship with Gilmour at the time before he met Polly, had a few good hits in the UK, and her dad was 60’s rocker Joe Brown. It’s a slide guitar yes, and the original was sung by Clare Torry, who also sang the theme tune to UK 70’s hit sitcom Butterflies. Sam Brown’s version is good but nothing on 1. The original, and 2. The version from 1988-9. Listen to the spoken words. “And I am not frightened of dying…” etc.❤❤ PLEASE please do Close to the Edge by Yes ❤❤ Don’t be put off by the chaotic start - it’s meant to be like that. Hold on to that hat: it’s among the best music ever created ❤🎉
One thing you have to consider when you pick a favorite voice is that the first singer got the violent/denial portion of the song, so the position dictated that kind of performance. The other two were different and more subdued and reflective with the last once fading away.
Only two songs in their history not sung by Pink Floyd. This and Have A Ciger, sung by Roy Harper. Dave and Roger were arguing about who was better for the vocals and Roy, just so happened to be recording in the same studio. He was like, I'll give it a go. One of my favourite Pink Floyd tracks.
Fantastic reaction, bro! Most people will say they prefer the original but this version is hand down the best, imo. I'm in agreement that all three are phenomenal but Sam Brown (the first girl) is just that one step above. If you want to hear the greatest female singer of all time, listen Ann Wilson, the singer for the rock band Heart. Notable tracks to start with are Barracuda, Magic Man, Crazy On You, Alone, Wild Child, and Dreamboat Annie. But that just scratches the surface. They're fantastic live as well, try anything from their Alive In Seattle DVD from 2003. It's all on YT. Their version of Battle Of Evermore from that show will give you goosebumps.
The moment you mentioned, when Sam Brown (blonde singer) stepped back, looked at David and seemed to wind up, and then cut loose with that growl, has a little story behind it. In rehearsals, David really wanted her to go for it, but she was afraid of blowing out her voice (this was at the end of a long tour), so he played her a little and said something like, I know you won't go for it, you'll pull back. His little psychological manipulation worked - when she's looking at David and winding up, she's thinking about what he said and was like, oh yeah, listen to this! Magnificent singers, all three. Sam is still around, but her vocal chords were damaged (later, not with Pink Floyd). Durga (2nd singer) is still around. Claudia died in 2018 - RIP.
Pink Floyds 1973 "The Dark Side Of The Moon" album, the end of side one, "The Great Gig In The Sky", original studio version,... Clare Torry adlib in 3 takes.
Get the lowdown from the lady herself, Clare Torry. Here's her interview, or monologue, about getting the job, performing, and the aftermath. It's only 8 minutes and well worth the time to get the story straight from the filly's mouth! ruclips.net/video/mIW7xZSlZoM/видео.html And here is her original version of "Great Gig" from the Dark Side of the Moon album: ruclips.net/video/UqCEPytSFqU/видео.html
An interesting side note for you. The blonde singer is Sam Brown. She had a big hit of her own called STOP. A great album too. She probably had more. Look her up. Unfortunately i dont know anything about the other two. Except that they are amazing. Keep up the good work mate. Youre one of the reactors i enjoy most. Cheers.
This is a beautiful performance, and totally fine to react to, but everyone is going to say it... Listen to Claire Torry's version (even if you don't do a reaction to it). It is absolutely super-human, and it's just her singing all of these parts. This song fits into the context of the entire Dark Side of the Moon album, as the relationship we all have with our own mortality. The way this song complements 'Time' and the album as a whole, is imo one of the most stunning achievements in all of modern music.
As others have said Sam Brown is the blonde singer, her father is Joe Brown hand he had a number of hits in the 1950s, ge was a decent guitarist and a friend of George Harrison. Anyway enough of that, make this fellow Brummie happy and react to Child In Time by Deep Purple, either the studio version or the live 1970 version will do just fine
And in addition to these three women that did a fantastic job with this song, the original singer was Clare H. Torry , when she was called to do this song for the original recording, she did it in one take.
This song was written to depict the various stages of death. This fits in perfectly with the theme and mood of the studio album, Dark Side of the Moon, which is a masterpiece from beginning to end.
Richard Wright wrote the music and he wrote it based on certain chords he likes from Miles Davis who was one of Richard's rights main influencers. Kind of surprised you couldn't find the studio version because it's one of the main songs on Dark Side of the Moon right after the song "Time"! A young girl named Clare Torry who was a session singer at the time improvised this whole song to Richard Wright's chords! Since she improvised most of the music she got a writing credit later on after a lawsuit that was not a angry or disputed lawsuit she just got her name in there as a co-writer! Listen for yourself to the version on Dark Side of The Moon and you probably better be sitting down when you do!! Also in the movie School of Rock with Jack Black he tells a young girl to listen to Great Gig in the sky for inspiration in the movie!
I read that Clare was improvising vocal sounds while being shown cue cards through the control room glass by a member of the band (probably Rodger Waters) with emotion words on them "Anger", "Grief", "Sadness" ... etc. Believe it was only 2 takes and they used the first one, but both were equally great. All done in a single short studio session and she didn't think it was going to appear on the album until hearing it playing in a music store or somewhere
It’s no good you are completely lost in the Pink Floyd rabbit hole ….lol ….it’s not good it’s BRILLIANT ….each time you listen to a track you are so much more attuned to the next, which in turn increases your appreciation and understanding …. Keep doing what you’re doing.

Really? Challenge accepted! Bet I'll fail..but I've been singing this for 40+ years.
This is why music is amazing. Never spoke a word, and was this moving.
This song says it all without words!
The best part is when you look at the camera, as if to ask "can you believe this?”... Yes, yes we can. Wonderful music it is.
Hi this one will stunn you the struggle from life to death a story without a single word.

Why does this masterpiece have only 1.6k likes in 2024? Classic performance of a rock classic from a classic album.
I'm 42 but I was blessed with a Mexican family that love Pink Floyd and the love is gonna stay for generations.
It's so refreshing watching young people enjoying this music/masterpieces. Keep the good reactions 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

I attended One of the concerts in the Pulse Tour in Cologne. Fantastic. Greatest band of all times for me.
Shes incredible
I do believe the first singer is Sam Brown singing this piece. Sam, daughter of Joe Brown, a famous UK pop star from the 1960’s.
The original recording of this is a beast as well. It's one of their best and that's saying a lot IMHO.
Sad that Sam cant sing anymore.A great talent in her day.
Been a Floyd fan for over 40 years. Great to see young people hear and embrace real music.

RUN LIKE HELL from the pulse concert. (remastered version)
Gotta check out the studio version bro ;) , It's just one lady doing it all on that version.
Just the perfect example of the four gods that were PF
Now You Will understand why we don't like " new" music. This generation reserve more
As other have said. This song is so different and so amazing. But you owe it to yourself to listen to the studio version as well.

If you have nothing else to do, react to Phil Collins-In the Air Tonight. Has to be live!
Listen to the original version from The Dark Side of the Moon by Claire Torry.
Great show but nothing seems to be better to me than the original with Claire Tory.
Wow, they are beautiful women !
R.I.P. durga
It’s no good you are completely lost in the Pink Floyd rabbit hole ….lol ….it’s not good it’s BRILLIANT ….each time you listen to a track you are so much more attuned to the next, which in turn increases your appreciation and understanding ….
Keep doing what you’re doing.
IMO the best version is the one in Delicate Sound of Thunder. Rachel Fury was something appart. And David agrees
The blond singer is Sam Brown
It's been a while since you listened to Pink Floyd. It's time you listened to "Animals" their 1977 album. You won't be disappointed.
the original singer did all the vocals her self

Clare Torry killed this on DSOTM.
