It took three great ladies in live version to sing what Clare Torry did and invented in studio version.

No topping Clare Torry’s original version. But I think any of these three ladies could have tackled all three parts. I honestly think that David Gilmour wanted all three to have their place in the spotlight. He’s always appreciated all of the artists in his band(s) and given them appreciation.

@@mikewatts867 Sorry Mike but your dead wrong! I have seen Gilmore try to perform Great Gig in The Sky with a few others and no one and I mean no one has or can come even close to Clare Torry, You can tell just by isolating these three that they can't do what Clare did.

The message is to portray the 7 emotions of grief or the feelings involved before you die. Shock or Disbelief, denial, anger, bargaining, guilt, depression and acceptance. Knowing this, listen to the song and you can understand how her voice flows beautifully between every emotion.

That is not the case. The truth is the great gig in the sky is GOD. The song is about the pain from losing a loved one in a war fought over religion. That is right from David Gilmour himself.

I'm not sure how many of the comments you read back then, but when you realize that it was one woman, and that she did it all ad-lib, in just two takes...!! That is possibly my all-time favorite vocal performance.

Back in O.C. Calif when I was 27 my wife heard a commercial on the radio about a P.F. show coming up. Knowing I am a Floyd fan she called the radio station (KMET - LA, “The Mighty Met”) to get information on the concert, The DJ on live radio Cynthia Fox…. said...."Congratulations, YOU are caller number 10, YOU just won tickets to the show and the Sound Check Party before the show"...
I met David Gilmour back stage. He gave us both a signed album that I have in my music room. We talked for 22 minutes. I called him…“The Master Of The Stratocaster” He smiled. I told him his music will stand the test of time with anything from Beethoven or Mozart. He smiled even bigger. I asked if I could shake both his hands that make such great guitar solos, he smiled bigger and said “Sure” and shook both hands at the same time, making a cross between us, I smiled HUGE. I asked him to describe his technique of playing guitar, he replied… “I strike a note, bend it, shake it and then release it”…. Yes, he does that quite well, better than any other guitarist I know. . I told him in my eyes he’s a “Legend“. He thanked me and said “Enjoy the show”…. during the concert after the song “Money” he looked right at me and said…. “On saxophone, another Legend, Mr. Scott Page” … acknowledging my comment to him. It is my favorite moment in over 300 shows I’ve seen.
All of us fortunate enough to have seen this show live were in a TRANCE.... MESMERIZED the entire show... as you can imagine. We walked out saying.... What did we just witness? That was out of this world incredible.

I was born in 1977 and my dad was the biggest Floyd fan I've ever known. He's told me that after putting me to bed as a toddler he would come check on me, and my bedroom wall being behind the living room speakers is where he would find me curled up. He would pick me up but only after the ALBUM was over and put me back in bed. And I never stirred. I don't remember it, but with the love that I have for them to this day, I'm not surprised.

Always enjoy your reactions! I was there. I'm old. And I've never forgotten bringing the much-awaited album home in a rush, getting friends in, and just sitting (floating!) in silence while the album took us all on a ride. The amazing thing is, the album almost never got produced. The record company hated it (too advanced for their minds) and only after pressure from the band did they agree to print 25k albums. Needless to say it blew up big time and the execs had to eat crow. Their concerts are almost unsurpassed, but no matter the talent, there is nothing better than the studio recording. Claire, of course, is a bonafide legend. Dark Side still moves after 50 years!!! I just wish I could hear it for the first time again. Meltdown with 15 people. Take care LFR. I'll be watching your other reactions for sure.

I have seen Pink Floyd Live 4 times… I saw this same show in N.Y. 1994. The concert brochure said the stage is 120 feet wide. It takes a crew of 60 technicians three days to set up the entire lights and all. The concert schedule required that there had to be three entire crews to keep up. They leap froged each other for 92 shows with 20 Trucks per crew and a total staff of 195. The tour cost the promoters $98.MILLION to put on, but the total profit was $260 MILLION…
I have seen Pink Floyd 4 times. Nick Mason’s drumming is incredible and matches Gilmour’s guitar emotions while Richard Wright takes us on a Magic Carpet Ride of tones that form the foundation of it all.

Ok.. I'm going to upset a few people here.
I was 23 when DSOM was released and I was blown away by Clare's vocals for TGGITS. She did it without any defining instructions - make it up as you go along as it were. Two takes, I think. Just fucking brilliant.
These three (Sam Brown, Durga McBroom, Claudia Fontaine) did it live, no retakes, in front of thousands, and it was being recorded. In the live performance you see the emotion, which adds to it for me.
Yes, Clare's was superb, but so was this - for completely different reasons. Enjoy them both.

Oh dude. If you liked this version, you have done yourself a disservice by not listening instead to the original from Dark Side of the Moon, which soars high above this one by orders of magnitude. I suppose if I'd never heard the DSOTM version I would probably like this, but having been spoiled my entire life with Clare Torry's inspired and soul-spinning rendition(which was spontaneously done off-the-cuff in one take, by the way), this version leaves me ice cold. I saw this performance in concert in person, having been at the concert and even in person, I cringed at how relatively sterile and emotionally flat her performance was compared to the original. No disrespect to the lady who performed this because Clare Torry is virtually impossible to mimic, but you missed an opportunity at passing up the DSOTM version instead.

I think Gilmour liked the last gal because he quit playing just to watch her towards the end. P.S. There are a lot of people who say this song is very similar to the 5 stages of dying. Denial not having anyone singing and the music still playing then Coming in with fire and passion as they rage about it, then taking it down a notch then bargaining in the middle. Then working your way through the depression and finally getting to acceptance of your fate at the end. Clare Torry did it better, but they did it very well too.

To get a better understanding about “Pink Floyd” music you should get some background. Once you start at the beginning, everything will make more sense and you will have even more of a appreciation for them as not only musicians but as humans, regarding SYD BARRETT, the Original Lead Vocalist/Writer/Guitarist of the band. SYD BARRETT played a very important role. The best way to do that is to watch each band member do an interview, where SYD is mentioned. SYD always comes up and there is much Love.
Every album has a reference or even a tribute to SYD BARRETT. The very last song recorded with SYD is called JUGBAND BLUES. It pretty much sums up the tragedy. The words are what and where SYD’s mind was at. I cried for him as he knew it was over in his 20’s.

Funny that you mention that she's singing at the "Pearly Gates" . . . . . . it's ALL improv and . . . they told Clare to imagine that she was dying and it was all her, after that.

The problem with this is that the singers here are trying to reproducing, with 3 singers, what the original (single) singer, Claire Torrey, did all by herself. Claire wasn't just trying to put down a nice free-flowing melody, she was acting out the 5 stages of dying:
    1. Denial
    2. Anger
    3. Bargaining
    4. Depression
    5. Acceptance
Go back and listen to the album/studio version and you will DEFINITELY be much more impressed, possibly even cry ... many chicks AND dudes do. No one has ever done it the way Claire did, or will ever. You owe it to yourself, Van !!! Do it !!! Do it NOW !!! 😊

With all due respect, - The "Atom" version? Really? How about Dark Side of the Moon? That's like saying check out the Beatles For Sale version of I Am the Walrus. I'm liking to think that was just a typo. I'm not beyond such mistakes myself, so I don't mean any disrespect, but we need to direct the LFRs in the right direction, not to an album that has no Great Gig on it. Peace dude.

@@kevinlawes591 Sorry brother. You misunderstand me. I'm just pointing out your mistake in saying it's from Atom Heart Mother. It's Dark Side of the Moon. That's all I was saying. Just a friendly correction is all I meant. Clare Torry's version is the one we're both talking about and it's from Dark Side of the Moon. Not Atom Heart Mother. If we truly want him to react to the best version, we need to correctly steer him to the correct album is all I'm saying. Peace. No disrespect intended. We're both talking about the greatest version there is and it's wonderful.

@@kevinlawes591 It's quite alright. I know that in text form the emotional context of what someone writes is subject to whatever the reader's imagination injects into it, regardless of whether it was the intended stress or not. Reading my initial message, I can see how you could have taken it as a snotty criticism. I should have been more strategic with my words.
