Maddy, that spinning drumset was part of their shows for years. Had the chance to see them live back in the late 80s. I was more of a "real" metal head in my teens, and all that hair-metal band where considered "not real metal". But for some reason I always loved Mötley Crüe.

Tommy Lee got the idea for the spinning drum from Mick Mars . His previous band came up with the idea in the 70's .

    • @ClaytonMacleod
      @ClaytonMacleod 6 месяцев назад

Close, but not quite. In guitarist Mick Mars’s previous band the drummer did indeed have an upside down drum set. It ain’t turn upside down, though. It was simply set up that way. There was no mechanism involved. It was just on some kind of rack to be suspended upside down for the whole show.
As for Tommy Lee’s drum set shenanigans, it wasn’t the same thing for years. He did something different nearly every tour, and it was always based around his drum solo section of the show. This song is from their 1987 album Girls, Girls, Girls. For the previous album, 1985’s Theatre Of Pain, his drum set was on a platform that was hinged in the front. The rear of it raised up on that hinge so that it came up to a 90-degree angle and in the audience you could see him drumming from the “top” since the platform was then perpendicular to the ground. It didn’t spin or anything else. It just came up on that front hinge.
For this 1987 tour he wanted to top that, and this was what he came to with. This contraption first extended out forward, and raised up. And it could then spin forwards and backwards. I could be mistaken, but I don’t think this one could do left and right spins. I think it only spun forward and backward. If you find one of the full show videos from that 1987 tour you could confirm whether or not it spun left and right by skipping to the drum solo section of the concert, which was when he would do whatever the drum thing was that year.
For the 1989 Dr. Feelgood tour he had a drum set that was up near the ceiling on a roller coaster track, but I don’t think that one did anything other than ride along that track, and the track was just flat. It didn’t have any vertical movement to it. It just weaved around a bit near the ceiling. I think it had some big fake subwoofer speakers hanging from it, just bare without any boxes. They didn’t actually do anything. Just for the spectacle.
I might be wrong, but I don’t recall him doing anything special with his drums after that tour until after they split up and had the reunion tour in 2005. I think that was the tour he had these bungee cord things strapped on himself, and he was jumping great distances between two different platforms. And I believe there was a circular roller coaster track, as well. Just one loop based at the normal drum spot on stage. There’s an official concert DVD from that tour.
Then for their “final” tour he actually had a humongous roller coaster track that did have a ton of elevation to it, and the drums also spun again, this time while riding the tracks. The tracks came up from the stage and went up and down over about 3/4 of the length of the arena. There’s an official Blu-Ray (and DVD?) of that tour. I believe one of the few times that it actually broke down was when they were filming for this one.
Then for the most recent Stadium Tour with Def Leppard, I don’t think he actually did anything special, likely because of how many bands had to play each night. These shows, Crüe actually sucked, and even resorted to some recorded parts for things they’d always played live in the past. It was sad. All the other bands on that tour put on good shows. I’ve seen them ten times over the years, and this tour was (luckily for me) the only one where I actually encountered Vince Neil living up to his reputation for singing like crap, half-assing it very badly. I was lucky, I guess, that every other time I saw them he actually put forth a good effort and sang well.

They eventually published a book entitled The Dirt: Confessions of the worlds most notorious rock band. Most friends had left him and the band was all he had. He used 5000$ of drugs a day… and apparently came up with this song after a short relationship with a chatolic schoolgirl.
Sixx may only be the best bass player but he wrote good deep lyrics.

  • @BlackieNuff

This band is one of those of the 80s who definitely lived hard and fast, full of decadence and debauchery, and as most music artists do (as you pointed out), they often write about what they know - and they definitely know about the "wild side" of life - however, it is not necessarily a song advocating or discouraging it ; at best you could say it qualified as "raising awareness", cos it's just a song encapsulating a way of life for many in those big cities, in a "it is what it is" sentiment.
Despite the live concert setting (in case there's any confusion), this was NOT live. This is indeed the studio album version, and I found it clever how they worked in some stage antics to sync up with the sounds of emergency sirens and gunfire and panicked screaming, through pyrotechnics and the like.

From Hollywood. Nikki writes most of the lyrics to Crue songs, and this one is really about the hard, dark, and wild side of Los Angeles/ Hollywood, which they themselves, lived around a lot of and inside of, as with most of us in music in Hollywood/LA did back in the 80s-90s. Nikki’s writing often inspired by the darker side of life, as his was pretty dark, rife with hard times and feelings. They lost a lot of friends and loved ones while paying their dues along the way, and they often found ways to make great Frankensongs out of all of it. They wanted to entertain as well as kick you in the nuts at the same time. Some songs were all for sleazy fun, and some were about the $hitty things about life, and some were aggressive, guilty pleasure fun at 120 decibels to scream your lungs out while your eardrums bleed…good stuff.😊

Yes, Motley Crüe lived on the wild side, but miraculously they survived it, but not without consequence. Singer Vince Neil and his buddy in another band were making a beer run while drunk, and Vince got into a car accident, and his friend died. He went to jail for manslaughter, but got a light sentence, although it did cost him 7 figures. Bass player Nikki Six got addicted to heroin and overdosed one night. He was pronounced dead, after his heart stopped for a couple of minutes. Them miraculously he came back from the dead, as I think the EMT stuck the needle in his heart with adrenaline. He shot up a batch of heroin one last time, after leaving the hospital, and realized he had to quite, or he’d die for sure any day. He never touch the stuff again.

This song as well as the lifestyle they've lived was an incessant glamorization of destructive choices. Choices that they rarely had to face the consequences of (sometimes). They themselves weren't guilty of "intentionally" harming anyone directly (*cough*cough*) but, they certainly cheered it on! I used to think it was "cool" and a lifestyle to pursue if I wanted wealth, the admiration of women and to live unjudged by others; but, as I got older I could see it for what it really is. Unfortunately, they'll never know the harm to others that they glorified for all those years... Razzle does...and the two kids with permanent brain damage do, but...well...yeah...
I'm sure that the Japanese man, minding his own business on the train, who was rushed to the hospital with a serious head injury because Nikki just "felt" like chucking the whiskey bottle into the passengers is just FINE with how they choose to behave! Haha! Good one, Nikki!
I'm sure if the fire that they started in the hotel WASN'T put out (fortunately) and it burned down with who-knows how many people inside, well...ROCK N' ROLL!!!
The instrumentation of this song is pretty good...just wish the intent behind the lyrics wasn't so harmful. Par for the course with the Crue I guess.

This is the era I became an adult from teen to adult from 1980 to 1990 and the 80's were a strange time and these guys (my age) were the generation of "Cold War" children, a small generation that doesn't even really have a name that lived like there was no tomorrow as that's what underlies pretty much all music of the 80's if you listen carefully.

The excess of the eighties is more than likely the cause of a hole in the ozone layer.
More cans of Aqua Net were emptied by bands like Mötley Crüe, Poison, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Steelheart, Dokken and many others.
    What a rush!

Haha, yes, we all bought a constant supply of Aquanet! I lived in L.A. during this time and it was exactly as fun as it looked. There were girls and guys all over the place looking just like this & it was amazing.

WOE NOW!! Not Promotional!! Just simply their style of playing instruments. As long as you UNDERSTAND THE LINES you can
    Get in line
    Cross the line
    Draw the line
    Tow the line or
    Snort the line
Our mistakes are the only things we can truly call our own!! 💘 Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎

I'm not entirely sure on the timing but Vince Neil (lead vocalist) was arrested for vehicular manslaughter over the death of a fellow musician, Nikki Sixx (bassist) died and had to be resuscitated due to an OD and Tommy Lee (drummer) was facing drug/alcohol dependency as well. It's very likely you're right by the timing of the song that it may have been written as more a warning than a glorification. It seems to be about that point of no return after the fact when you just give in. It's pretty much saying "if you wanna spend an eternity in hell just follow me".

When they was on tour for this album Tommy Lee played an 8 minute drum solo in the middle of this song. At one point he played for about 2 minutes upside down and the rest of the time he was continuously rotating 360 degrees

LA was even more of a cesspool back then and they came right out of it. None of the bands back then could party harder than Crue, Guns n Roses tried to out do them and even they couldn't do it. Nikki even died and was brought back so they wrote a song about it called Kickstart My Heart, check it out.

The previous tour, the drum kit went vertical (see Home Sweet Home video), and was the first time they had Tommy Lee strapped in. The tour AFTER this, they had a track taking the drum kit out and over the audience. Theatrics are something missing from a lot of music in the 2000's. Back in the 80's, lots of bands gave the audience everything they paid for and then some. :)

I loved the look on your face when drummer Tommy Lee was turning upside down. That's Pamela Anderson's ex-Husband up there! :) Yeah, some of the lyrics were off in the subtitles. But yeah these guys REALLY partied it up in the 80's! The movie The Dirt is all about them based on the book of the same name.
