Actually the thing is like a speaker on the end of a tube that you hold in your mouth and manipulate/modulate the sound my changing the shape of your mouth which is picked up by the mic and brought back into the mix.
If you care to see this talk box a little closer check out Peter Framton live do you feel like we do. Really cool song done in the 1970’s and was a big hit back then and is still playing on the radio.
Yeah, it is just the guitar sound. You don’t actually make any noise yourself. You simply shape the sound with your mouth. When you switch to it you mute the regular guitar amp sound so that only the sound from the microphone is playing by switching from your usual speakers to the speaker that is inside a box, and the tube that goes in your mouth is connected to that box so that all the guitar sound comes only through that tube. You move your mouth as if you are talking or singing, but as I say, you make no sound yourself. The combination of what you play and how you play on the guitar, combined with what you do with your mouth, can make it sound like the guitar is talking. And that’s where the name talk box comes from. Someone already mentioned Peter Frampton. Another well known song that uses one is Bon Jovi’s Living On A Prayer. Also Aerosmith’s song Sweet Emotion. Among many others.
That is what the phrase came from. Nikki loves cars so he changed the words and the meaning to cars, which you see in the video, and motorcycles. 103 is a speed. The phrase Kick Start My Heart is from the three times Nikki died. He came back from all three. The longest was 9 minutes.
This story is disputed, someone who was there said it didn't happen that way and he recovered before the paramedics showed up. True or fiction it's still a cool story to go with the song.
It's called a Talk Box, it uses a plastic tube you put in your mouth and allows you to manipulate the sound of the guitar with your mouth. You should also do their song Home Sweet Home. This song was the most requested song on MTV,, so much so that they created a rule limiting how many times they will play the same song.

If you are wondering what Motley Crue is all about it’s pretty simple-- indulgence and good times all the time. That it, that’s everything they represented in the 80’s.
Motley Crüe were the epitome of 80s excess and decadence. especially in the "Hair Metal" crowd. if you haven't yet, you should check out their "Wild Side" video. One of my favorite Crüe songs. Rock on! 😁
I seem them for the first time in 1985 on the "theater of pain" tour. I was 16. It was awesome. I saw them again 20 years to the month later for the "carnival of sin" tour. Still an amazing show 20 years later. Ty for the reaction. You are adorable.
They were a hot ass mess. And the Prince / Motley Crue connection is hilarious😂 Bless their hearts I have no idea how they're still all alive. I'm still pretty sure Uncle Mick will outlive all of them.
This song came out my freshman year of college. It was so awesome! and still is. Then in 2004 Bowling For Soup did a song "1985" and in the lyrics it says, "When did Motley Crue become classic rock." It was then I realIzed I was old :(. But watching you enjoy this song made me feel young again. Thanks!
This is the first time I’ve had one of your reactions come up on my feed. As soon as you smiled and spoke, I subscribed. You are absolutely adorable, I love your enthusiasm, and I look forward to watching everything you’ve uploaded. Keep up the great work!!!!
Saw them in the 80's and again with my oldest son on their stadium tour that included Poison and Def Leppard. It was amazing and I was glad to pass on 80's and 90's music to my 2 sons
That was his guitar. the thing in his mouth is a small speaker, and he makes it sound different by moving his mouth. Which is what makes the guitar say "Kickstart my heart" at the end of the song.
TALK BOX is the name for the effect Mick Mars was using.О,май бэд.Не обратил внимание на имя.Инна,это популярная штука в 80х.Bon jovi Living on a prayer,наверное, самая популярная песня тех лет с применением Talk box.
The song is about speed and adrenaline. My two favorite things in life. Both of which kickstart your heart. A euphemism to his heart being kickstarted with an adrenaline shot to the heart.
Excellent fun reaction to this banger. This song will Kickstart your ❤ if you need it or not! Plenty more bangers from the Crue for you to discover. Have a rocking weekend! 😊🎉❤
The "metallic" effect on the microphone has nothing to do with Autotune: it's called "Talk box" and is a pedal effect which inside houses a speaker to which a plastic tube is connected, the end of which is positioned near the instrumentalist's mouth, connected to a microphone. When the effect is activated, the sound is directed through the tube to the musician's mouth who, by modifying the shape and position of the tongue, changes the sound while also modulating its harmonic content. Many artists used it: try listening the intro of "Livin' on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi (Richie Sambora used it several times), but long before them Peter Frampton used it in the song "Do You Feel Like We Do", to move on to Pete Townshend of the Who up to Joe Perry of Aerosmith in the song "Sweet Emotion", and the list could go on and on...
Loved your reaction. Girls Girls Girls, Wild Side, and Dr. Feelgood have similar vibes to this one….The voice and the guitar are connected together another famous 80s song with this effect was Bonn Jovi Living on a Prayer.
Another famous song where the Golden Throat is used is "Do You Feel Like I Do" by Peter Frampton. He performs an extensive guitar solo while throating and talking throughout the solo. It's Great!!
Mötley Crüe represented the expression "Sex, drugs and rock'n roll" (and alcohol) at its best (or worst, depending on your point of view 😃) in the 80s. Probably my favorite Crüe song is "Wild Side". I would like to be a few years younger, but I'm happy to have lived the 80s intensely (without certain excesses, obviously; no drugs and alcohol). I preferred to play sports (basket, football, tennis, beach volley). 😎 But it's nice that many young people today are interested in that period and would like to know more, from music to fashion etc. etc.
The guitar/voice effect comes from a device called a Golden Throat. You plug the guitar and the amp into the device and it puts the guitar output through a plastic tube that is taped to a microphone so the artist can make that strange sounding effect. By putting the tube in his mouth he can actually mouth words and play them in sync with his guitar. Mick Mars does this as the last line of the song "Kickstart My Heart"
They are using a Talk Box. Other songs that use it are Peter Frampton's 'Do You Feel Like We Do', Bon Jovi's 'Livin' on a Prayer', Nazareth's 'Hair of the Dog' and Joe Walsh's 'Rocky Mountain Way'
I was there from the beginning with Motley Crue. Their music has pulled me through a lot of bad times. The first part is not drugs it's about cars. Then it talks about adventure and women. It goes to an in your face to the critics and those who judge them and how no matter what others think they are kicking ass. Mick goes into a Talk Box which Peter Frampton used all the time. Then how they won.😊
Same here. Motley Crue and AC/DC were my go-to bands during high school, mid 80s. Got me through the good and bad. First heard them when I was about 13, Smoking in the Boys Room came on the radio and I remember thinking 'what is THIS ..never heard anything like THIS before'. I was hooked. I sat with that radio for what seemed an eternity waiting for the next rotation of the song. 🤣. Good times.
The talk box pipes the sound through a tube, from the guitar into the mouth cavity of the guitar player where he shapes the guitar sound with his mouth. The guitar player is not singing, the guitar is.
The strange "voice" you hear is guitarist Mick Mars using a talk box. The sound from his guitar is piped up through a hollow tube into his mouth, and he modulates the sound by changing the shape of his mouth (like we do as we speak) this modulated sound is then picked up by his microphone.
What he’s using is a talk box, you can look up how it works there is a lot of videos on RUclips. It was widely used in rock music in the 70s,80s,and 90s but he’s not singing to get those sounds .
Motley Crue were one of the biggest hard rock bands to emerge from the L.A. scene in the 80's... they were also one of the most scandalous 😲 'Kickstart my heart' was a song Nikki Sixx (bass) of Motley Crue wrote about surviving a he+++n OD when the band was on tour w/ Guns N' Roses in 1987 (Paramedics revived Sixx by injecting his heart w/ adrenaline and restarting it) ... Their 1989 album 'Dr. Feelgood' charted at #1 in the US and marked a career peak... Netflix made a comedy movie 'The Dirt' based on Motley's biography. Nikki Sixx (bass) came from a broken home and arrived in Los Angeles w/ a dream of becoming a rock star (even though he could barely play bass, Sixx could write lyrics and melodies for original songs) in the 70's... After some disappointments, Sixx met Tommy Lee (drums) who was still a teen in a local band and picked him for a new band in 1980... Mick Mars (guitar) joined soon after - he was considerably older and had been a local musician for a decade... Tommy Lee recommended his high school friend Vince Neil (vocals) who was not a great singer, but had the look and image that drove women wild at shows... Mars named the band 'Motley Crew' and they chaged the spelling to Motley Crue. In 1981, Motley Crue debuted in the L.A. scene as a glam rock band w/ the members wearing makeup, high-heel shoes and big hair... they also recorded a debut album 'Too fast for love' and released it independently... By 1982, they were already selling out clubs in L.A. and raising hell w/ parties on the Sunset Strip... They were signed in 1983 to a major label and released 'Shout at the Devil'... which became a multi-platinum hit as Motley opened for Ozzy Osbourne in 1984. However, tragedy hit when singer Vince Neil was involved in a car accident that killed his passenger and friend, Nicholas 'Razzle' Dingley, who was the drummer of glam rockers Hanoi Rocks... Neil did jail time and was let out in 1985. Motley released 'Theater of Pain' in 1985 and it was another multi-platinum hit... However, the glam image became imitated by every rock band coming out of L.A. in 1986/ '87 ... so, Motley Crue changed their image into a tougher look in 1987 for the album 'Girls, girls, girls'... By this point, Nikki Sixx was abusing he+++n and after an OD, he and the band were put on notice to clean up... 'Dr. Feelgood' was a massive hit album in 1989 and Motley Crue were on top of the world... They celebrated their 10th anniversary w/ a best of compilation 'Decade of Decadence' in 1991... However, a rift between the band and Vince Neil led to the singer being fired in 1992... Motley Crue released a self-titled album in 1994 w/ John Corabi (vocals)... even though it was a heavy records, it sold poorly... In 1997, Motley reunited w/ singer Vince Neil for the album 'Generation swine'... but it was experimental musically and again sold poorly. Tommy Lee was arrested and served jail time for assaulting his then-wife actress Pamela Anderson... Tommy Lee left Motley in 1999 and the band soon split up after their 2000 album 'New Tattoo' w/ (late) drummer Randy Castillo. Motley Crue's original line-up reunited in 2005 for a massive tour and soon found themselves back in big business w/ the 2008 album 'Saints of Los Angeles'... a final tour in 2014 was supposed to end their career, but they returned to tour again in 2022. In 2023, guitarist Mick Mars retired from the band and was replaced by John 5 (guitar) as Motley Crue were still actively touring.
Is it any wonder that the 80s was the best decade! I was in my 20s then, crazy times!! Everything shown is adrenaline fueled. Watch also Wild Side where you'll see something special with the drummer, also girls, girls, girls is good too. They had many hits
The "electronic voice" was a talk box. It directs the sound of the guitar into the players mouth through a plastic tube and they change the pitch of the sound by changing the shape of their mouth. The voice is actually the guitar resonating in his mouth and echoing back out. He's not using his vocal chords at all.
I was a 17 year old Indiana boy. Tommy Lee threw a drumstick into the crowd in 1986 that hit me in the head and fell to the ground at my feet. But some bigger kid grabbed it at the same time, and won. 😢
The 'voice' is talk box - been around for decades, I know at least since 70s (Peter Frampton). They were not talking about drugs but instead being adrenaline junkies instead of drug addicts. Thus all the intermingled imagery of race cars, race boats, drag racing, motorcycles that they drove 103 mph and ran away from cops chasing them. Also, pretty sure the last line is Rock the House (a phrase common in the 80s).
Mick Mars the guitar player is using what is called a talk box. You can google that and find out how it works I never used one when I was in a band. Pretty big in the 70s and 80s..
A talk box or sqwak box runs the guitar sound through the mouth then picked up again through mics and depending how open or closed your mouth is changes the sound.
Motley Crew was all about the party for sure ,lol . Trashing hotels all over the country while on tour. Their concerts were a blast . Vince Neil was probably one of the best hair band front man ever . Most bands would have a hard time keeping g up with them as far as drugs and drinking go. It was an amazing time growing up as a teenager in the 80s ,lol
We can tell you about the heroin overdose and two cardiac needles to the heart as the inspiration for the song but honestly I don't think we can truly convey the spirit of the song. I think to truly understand who and what Motley Crue is you had to experience the 80's as we did. Motley Crue was the definition of sex, drugs and rock n roll. As a hardcore Crue fan in the 80's we knew the stories and that they were wild but really, we still didn't know. It wasn't until I read their book The Dirt and then bassist Nikki Sixx's The Heroin Diaries that the true depth of their lifestyle became clear. To say it's a miracle these guys are still alive is an understatement! This song came out when I was in high school and just got my license. As a dumb ass 16 year old who drove a 1971 Firebird this was a dangerous song to have on in the car because when it started my foot just pushed that pedal to the floor and did not let up!
The "robotic" voice, is from a talkbox, it's a device that is used and plugged into a microphone a guitarist uses, that uses the sounds and notes from the guitar to make it speak...I could go longer in, but, I don't wanna. 😜
Regardless of the comments below, the reference, Kickstart my Heart, is not a reference to Tommy Lee's overdose, that happened much later in the bands life. This "Kickstart my Heart' refers to starting an NHRA Drag Car (Top Fuel Drafster - not a drug reference), where you actually have to attach a starter spinner to the Supercharger to get the engine to fire (Vince Neal was a big drag racing and an adrelleine fan). Notice in the video the constant references to National Hot Road Association of America (NHRA) Drag Racing, series?? You might want to look it up, it is freaking AWECOME>
The "legend" has it that the song mentions "a certain time" that the author (Niki Sixx) had an overdose and was revived with a direct injection of adrenaline into the heart... that's why "Kick my heart"... Will it be true? Who knows, but it's a great classic glam rock song.😉
Excellent reaction. Great song!!! The reference to speed wasn't drugs, in my opinion. It was more about getting high on driving fast in a car, thus the high speed cars in the video.
"Wild Side" as other have suggested is great. For a lighter side of Crue, check out "Home Sweet Home" and "Without You". Also worth checking out "Live Wire" from their 1st album (Kickstart My Heart was on their fifth album). Other big songs "Girls, Girls, Girls", "Looks that Kill", "Don't Go Away Mad", "Dr. Feelgood", "Smokin' In the Boys Room" (cover song), to name a few, lol.
It's not drugs... Speed - top fuel funny cars are the drug for me. It's about cars... motorycles, skydiving... etc, Hence, "Kickstart (as in a motorcycle) my heart.
Thank you so much for being here guys, see you soon on Twitch
My first concert 1988 Motley Crue Girls,Girls,Girls tour. I was deaf for 3 days afterwards. One of the best days of my life.
My first concert was also Motley Crue on that same tour except it was a little earlier in 1987. They put on a great show back then.

@@ClaytonMacleodThanks for the great explanation. Now I truly understand it.
The phrase "kickstart my heart" supposedly refers to Sixx's overdose incident where a paramedic injected his heart with adrenaline.
That is what the phrase came from. Nikki loves cars so he changed the words and the meaning to cars, which you see in the video, and motorcycles. 103 is a speed. The phrase Kick Start My Heart is from the three times Nikki died. He came back from all three. The longest was 9 minutes.

He does mention the word “Drugs” but if you look at the lyrics it’s about adrenaline..he says “Top Fuel funny cars, the drug for me”
Great reaction....you rock
Is it any wonder that the 80s was the best decade! I was in my 20s then, crazy times!! Everything shown is adrenaline fueled. Watch also Wild Side where you'll see something special with the drummer, also girls, girls, girls is good too. They had many hits
It's called a talk box it works with the guitar and the song was from the mid 80s.
I would recommend "Wild Side" next.
This song was everywhere when i grew up lol!
These guys were the epitome of Rock Stars
MOTLEY BADASSNESS
The song is actually about Nikki Sixx ODing and they had to shoot him up with adrenaline to kick start his heart.
The "electronic voice" was a talk box. It directs the sound of the guitar into the players mouth through a plastic tube and they change the pitch of the sound by changing the shape of their mouth. The voice is actually the guitar resonating in his mouth and echoing back out. He's not using his vocal chords at all.
Rock&Roll Hevean byy The Righteous brothers
The guy driving the ambulance at the beginning is Sam Kinison.
Love your reaction. This was always a favorite! If you get a chance, check out their song "Girl don't go away mad just go away"
You should do video on Skid Row's I Remember You 👌😉 you'll love it!
Kickstart - ignition lever on a Harley motorcycle. Start my heart.
Great choice 2 a great song..Thank u...UTFB
It wasn't until I heard you say "auto tune" with your lovely accent, that I also heard "out of tune". 😂
Thank you for another great reaction Inna!! 🎉
Being a teen in the 80's was as good as it looked
Kickstart My Heart was released in 1989
I want this song to be playing if i ever have a defibrillator used on me 😂
Yeah, it's great for cardio.
Oh I definitely want to see your reaction to "Girls, Girls, Girls".
This song is responsible for so many speeding tickets! 😂
бесподобно смотреть как молодые девушки на твоих глазах за минуту влюбляются навсегда )
That was Mick Mars voice going through an electronic synthesizer
What a song.
The "robotic" voice, is from a talkbox, it's a device that is used and plugged into a microphone a guitarist uses, that uses the sounds and notes from the guitar to make it speak...I could go longer in, but, I don't wanna. 😜
The best show of the Crue.. live in bs as 2008... #epic
Welcome to the 80’s babe!😊
Tommy Lee - (drummer of Motley Crue)
"Hold Me Down" 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
the most requested song when skydiving ever
Excellent reaction. Great song!!! The reference to speed wasn't drugs, in my opinion. It was more about getting high on driving fast in a car, thus the high speed cars in the video.
She said 70’s! 😂😂😂
Very fun song
The voice is not auto tune same like Bon Jovi livin on a prayer guitarist
Now Motley Crue-Looks that kill, please!!
a voice box is connected to the guitar, a hose is put in the mouth to augment the guitar,,,,,
look into that those where the day
Electronic voice is the use of a talk box.
It's so cute when young people first learn how to ROCK.
You should really listen to "Home Sweet Home"
❤❤❤
WILDSIDE
It's not drugs... Speed - top fuel funny cars are the drug for me. It's about cars... motorycles, skydiving... etc, Hence, "Kickstart (as in a motorcycle) my heart.
