  • A playthrough of Konami's 1991 license-based platformer for the NES, Tiny Toon Adventures.
Tiny Toon Adventures for the NES was the first game to be based on the popular cartoon series, and it bears all the same qualities that made Konami's other license-based carts such hits.
Montana Max has kidnapped Babs Bunny, and it's up to Buster to save her. He has to hop-and-bop through five stages across Acme Acres before finally arriving at Max's mansion to throw down.
Buster doesn't have to go it alone, though. At the beginning of each stage, he can choose a partner whose special skill will help him along: Plucky Duck can glide, Dizzy Devil can turn into a whirlwind that can destroy enemies and break blocks, and Furrball can climb vertical surfaces. Sometimes having the ideal partner for an area will give you access to a specific shortcut or a power up, and sometimes it'll make fighting specific enemies much easier.
Not that it really needs to be made any easier than it already is. Konami was famous for creating inordinately difficult NES games - remember Mission: Impossible and The Adventures of Bayou Billy? - but they also made some of the easier action games for the system - games like Monster in My Pocket and Tiny Toon Adventures, not that that is a complaint. It's based on a kid's television show, so it's nice that they kept their target audience in mind when they were designing it. (The same cannot be said for the sequel, unfortunately: • Tiny Toon Adventures 2... )
Much like the Ninja Turtles games, this one takes pains to stay as true to the show as possible. The graphics are of excellent quality with lots of bright color and sprites that closely resemble their TV character counterparts. The attention given to small things like idle animations and facial expressions imbue the game with a lot of personality, and so does the upbeat sample-heavy music. It looks and feels like a late-gen high-budget NES action game, which is exactly what you'd expect from a Konami title releasing at the end of 1991.
Tiny Toon Adventures is a high quality hop'n'bop platformer that nails its license and its gameplay, and though it caters to the younger crowd, it can be enjoyed by pretty much anybody that appreciates a well-made game.
(And that secret Duck Vader battle - I loved that!)

That’s just it, when the NES first came out visuals and audio like you see here was thought to be well beyond the system’s capabilities. If we’re talking strictly visuals these would be probably pushing early 16 bit instead of 8 bit. Konami, Capcom, and Sunsoft were consistently pushing the NES well past its upper limits. Nintendo too but those three companies did it constantly.

    1-Furball, since he can climb.
    2-Plucky, he can swim
3-Dizzy, he can Tornado to break things
Yet the game doesn’t save and that’s as well what makes it so much harder, yet the music is good aswell :P
