  • A playthrough of Tecmo's 1991 NES game, Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom.
For all the ire that I might draw in saying so, this is my second favorite Ninja Gaiden game after the 1989 original. The graphics are an incredible showcase for the NES' capabilities in the hands of an experienced developer, the music is just as good as the older ones, this time even going so far as to include super-distorted digital samples in the music, as well as including an obnoxious "Ha!" sound every time Ryu swings his sword.
The controls are the smoothest and most intuitive of the three games, with a hanging manoeuvre that allows Ryu to flip up onto platforms above him.
A lot of hullabaloo has generated as a result of the game's hugely increased difficulty over the original Japanese version, but it is actually a fair amount easier than the first two. The major difference is that each enemy dishes out way more damage per hit, and you're limited to five continues, but it really just comes down to playing the game enough to anticipate the upcoming bad stuff - things are much easier to avoid in this game over the first two, and they have a far smaller tendency to swarm the **** out of you.
The only HUGE oversight in my mind in the game play is the goof with the time in the final area. Someone correct me if you know otherwise, but as far as I know, you cannot finish the game without losing a life: Act VII doesn't give you anywhere near enough time to get through the level before the timer kills you. It's quite difficult to get that far in the level without dying first (therefore resetting the timer), but still - isn't it enough of a challenge without forcing a death on the player at the very end?
The story... sigh could have been much better. There are tons of appearances from old characters (it takes place between the original and NG2), but they really force quite a few leaps in logic, and a lot of it seems kind of random. The graphic quality of the cinematics, however, utterly destroys just about anything else that Tecmo ever did with their "Tecmo Theatre" system.
Finally, if you really dislike the limited continues, you could always try to play the SNES Ninja Gaiden Trilogy version... complete with butchered sound and ugly graphics (....errr, wasn't it supposed to be an upgrade?).

This is another fantastic edition of the series to round out the original trilogy, though it's often blasted for it's (totally convoluted) story and it's difficulty level. It really isn't that hard, and sure the story is insane, but it plays SOOOO smoothly.

The franchise actually started in 1988 when Ninja Gaiden was released to arcades; it was brought back in the mid-to-late 2000s on the Xbox until Tecmo merged with Koei to become Koei Tecmo Holdings.

This is my favorite from the franchise. I prefer the soundtrack here i think it took neoclassical shred to another level and it fits really well with smoothness of the gameplay. The initial few levels you feel unstoppable because of how fast ryu reacts to your joystick moves. One of the great games of all time imho.

    • @pranavphx

    • @hellsunicorn
      @hellsunicorn 3 года назад +10

Honestly, as someone who played the game heavily when I was younger (the NES Ninja Gaiden trilogy coincided with my latter elementary school days and everyone was playing it at the time), I was dumbfounded by the complaints of its difficulty. Of all 3 games, this one was basically the easiest from an overall gameplay standpoint, it was only really difficult if you missed the super-sword power up and tried to take down one of the bosses without it. Likewise, the storyline never struck me as that convoluted, they basically brought in more of a Sci-Fi element to the fantastical setting of the previous games. Foster always struck me as a potential arch-villain due to his actions at the end of the first game, and at the time I was obsessed with completing this game to find out whether or not Irene was actually dead given that it wasn't widely publicized at its release that it took place between the first and second game, hence Lew could not have been dead given that she was in the story afterward.
I still consider the second game to be the best of the series, but overall I found the story easy to follow and the game play was always fantastic, even if the first game was ridiculously hard and I did rage quit a few times when first attempting it. Hey, I was 9 years old at the time, cut me some slack. lol

Knowing now that Ninja Gaiden III comes before Sword of Chaos story wise, this game takes on a new meaning. Irene takes on tough assignments and Ryu helps her get out of the jams. I like their interaction throughout the whole NES trilogy. The gameplay addition of the powerup to increase the sword swing distance is reminiscent of Stryder. I think in this part of the story they wanted to go more "out there" with the idea of Life Force, transmutation, and Bio-Droids. So, this part of the trilogy, to me, transitions into more science fiction. The first Ninja Gaiden sits in the realm of revenge, justice, and love, while Sword of Chaos takes us into darkness vs. light and the transition between the two. All in all, a wonderful series. Thank you, NintendoComplete, for your gameplay throughout the whole series. Well done!

I believe Ninja Gaiden 2 was the most cool. The first one is very rare, and the levels aren't that good designed, nor the items that change everytime you enter a new stage. Weird design. Ninja Gaiden 3, by the other hand, seems like they try to get a connection to the OVA, losing the charm in the process.
In my opinion, Ninja Gaiden 2's story is simple but effective, the perfect sequel.

All the assassins creed and stuff really made us worse players. I remember beating most of the games back then.

Great game. Didn’t realize this until much later that this is actually a prequel to Ninja GaiDen 2. All three were great games. Although one thing about this one I always wondered about as compared to the first two. The first two had villains that were legitimately terrifying….just by the names they sounded tough and difficult….Jaquio and Ashtar. Those sound like villain names! And they lived up to it.
But here….the final boss is Clancy. CLANCY!!!
You go from fighting Jaquio and Ashtar to fighting CLANCY!!😂😆
Ryu was probably thinking oh I’m fighting Clancy now! Yay! Woo-hoo!
Clancy!!!😆😆 sounds like fighting potato chips from ALDI!
    Jaquio…..Ashtar…..all the way to…..
    CLANCY!!😜🤪

Isn't it weird how the subtitle is "The Ancient Ship of Doom" yet you never find out what this "ship of doom" actually IS until near the end of the game?

Clancy and that warship vaporized while Castle Rock Fortress, along with Foster's body in such pieces, crumble down by the shockwave of the explosion.

Ok, I've only just watched the opening cut-scene before the start screen, but how can anyone say Ryu eliminated Irene? Out of context it looked like an accident. Also, I remember being blown away by the music and opening scene of NG2. This one was just kind ho hum.

I loved all of the Ninja Gaiden's on the SNES. never got into the PS versions because I didn't like the way they reworked the story into Dead or Alive. NG3 gets a lot of hate I think because they went more for the sci-fi aspect instead of sticking with the fantasy/occultish themes of the first 2.
And yes 3 was definetly easier than the first 2, mostly I think because of the introduction of the dragon sword weapon which dramatically increased your reach.

Totally~! I don't like that Dead Or Alive are in the same universe as Ninja Gaiden. It'll always be different worlds to me~

easier than II?? ....interesting... I have always found one nearly impossible, II SUPER easy, and III VERY frustrating. it was probably the ages I played them at, and how much I practiced.
