  • A playthrough of Capcom's 1989 platformer for the NES, Mega Man 2.
    This video has been replaced by a brand new 4K playthrough. Please check that out instead! • Mega Man 2 (NES) Playt...
    Played through on the "difficult" setting.
    If you're interested in my full write-up/review on Mega Man 2, be sure to check out www.nintendocomplete.com/mega-...
    Mega Man 2 is (obviously) the second game in Capcom's famed series, and an improvement on the original in every conceivable way. Mega Man 2 was the first game to feature a full eight robot masters for the first stage, and it expanded upon Mega Man's array of powerups for some interesting puzzle elements. I really liked those bits toward the end the end of the game - even if foolishly wasting a weapon would completely screw you in certain places. How I raged at that boss with the destructable walls as a kid!
    While not quite as refined as the third game, Mega Man 2 is one of the best platformers released for the NES. It absolutely crushed it with amazing graphics, sound, and well-tuned gameplay... even if it is quite a bit easier than the first game.
    If you haven't played it yet, what are you waiting for?
    If you have, go play it again. No matter how recently you have gone through it, it always deserves another game. Even if you risk breaking your controllers at those disappearing block sections.

    This soundtrack is legendary, it’s far and away the best of the whole NES saga. The “guitar”-solo in Air Man’s stage might be the best part of any song in any Mega Man game.

      And the entire first Wiley theme just stands on its own as an absolute banger. It doesn't matter what you're doing -- if that tune is playing, you're on a legendary mission. I could be folding laundry or shaving and I'd be like "let's fucking GOOOOOOOOOO"

      @@aliciasmo Mega Man 3’s soundtrack is good but i don’t know, there’s a couple things about it that keep it below MM2 for me. The instrumentation sounds like the music has a stuffy nose (I can’t describe it but the instruments sound a little hollow and compressed moreso than usual) and often times it’s sliiiiightly off beat. Don’t get me wrong, the compositions are quite good, but MM2’s ost is just so snappy and precise that i gotta give it up for that game

    I had never played the first Mega Man back in the day, but as soon as I saw this game in Nintendo Power, I knew I had to have it. Bought it with my birthday money when it came out in the summer of 89. I have fond memories of my best friend and the time and I having a sleepover and staying up to beat it. I also remember we thought Mega Man had died at the end, given how he just kind of fades away, leaving only his helmet, and how the music playing while he was walking sounded kind of sad. Lots of memories tied to this one.

    I do so love Mega Man 2, and the soundtrack is nothing short of legendary. What can I say that those 80s kids who praised this to Hell and back haven't? Nintendo Power and all those old dudes say that Mega Man 2 is their favorite in the series, as it introduced all the mainstay elements like 8 instead of 6 Robot Masters and the Wily Castle map screens and the spiritual predecessor to Rush, the "Items". Who doesn't dig MM2? It's great. A little on the easy side, but awesome to play, even today.

  • @MFields2178
    @MFields2178 6 лет назад +40

    I swear everything you said in your description is accurate as hell. This one is my favorite in the series but I don't blame anyone for liking part 3 more. When I was a kid, I was blown away by these graphics. I felt like I was playing a cartoon. But you are right, those bosses at wilys castle are unfair. I absolutely hate that wall and even the last guy, though fairly easy, can get you raged if you don't have the bubble. The music is some of the best the nes has to offer. Wilys castle alone is proof of that.

    • @NintendoComplete
      @NintendoComplete  6 лет назад +7

      Yeah, these graphics were unbelievable when it was new. Some of those end bosses, like the dragon and the Guts Man tank, have so much personality to them, let alone how they dwarf the bosses in many 16-bit games! Capcom became awesome on NES after they started developing their own games.

    This game is still my favorite of the series. I think a lot of it is nostalgia, but every time I play it also just feels so good, and the music is perfect. I actually got it first, because the original was such a limited release in the States. But when they re-released Megaman I went out and got it. I was pretty disappointed at first, since it had two less robot masters and not even a picture of a Wily Castle. But I grew to appreciate the magnet beam and the abilities of the weapons and the difficulty. Never did like that "sliding" bug when trying to stop after picking up a power-up capsule, though.

    Arguably the greatest soundtrack of the 2D gaming era. Megaman 3 soundtrack was damn close, and Megaman 1 and 4 also had great tunes, but 2 has that extra level of compositional mastery that is untouched.
    Hardest Wiley Levels too, but the easiest robot fights.
    You combine the music of 2, the UI and level design of 3, the gameplay of 4 and boss design from each, you’d have the perfect Megaman game.

    Here are my overviews of the master weapons and items from Mega Man 2:
    P Shooter - Standard weapon. Infinite Bullets (obviously).
    Air Shooter (A) - This weapon can be good against airborne enemies, Crash Man, the fire enemies in Quick Man's stage and those Sniper Walkers in Flash Man's stage...but it also consumes 2 bars of ammo.....which means you can use Air Shooter a total of 14 times before it runs out of ammo.
    Crash Bomber (C) - This CAN be a nice weapon (since it blows walls out) and can be a pretty good choice to use against Quick Man, Flash Man and the Sniper Walkers. However, it's ammo consumption is pretty high (4 bars per use), which means you can use it a total of 7 times before it runs out.
    Time Stopper (F) - This can be useful in freezing enemies and traps (to bypass them). However, you can't switch weapons while Time Stopper is in use.
    Quick Boomerang (Q) - This is actually a pretty good weapon to use on those ground "springer" enemies that roam in some stages (and most of the enemies in the game). Also, it's ammo consumption is 1/8th of an weapon energy bar per use (making it a tie with this Boomerang and Screw Crusher for the lowest weapon energy bar ammo consumption in the entire Mega Man (Classic) Series). That's 224 uses of Quick Boomerang, mind you! (28 times 8 is 224). Quick Boomerang can also auto-fire and you can fire 4 Quick Boomerangs maxmium).
    Metal Blade (M) - If there's one thing that the Mega Man (Classic) Series has taught me, it's that any weapon that starts with "blade" is OP beyond belief. Metal Blade is no exception. This weapon is probably the most OP weapon in the entire Mega Man (Classic) Series, bar none (there are multiple reasons for that). 1: You can fire in 8 directions - that's right, I said EIGHT directions. 2: It's ammo consumption is ridiculously low (it takes off 1/4th of an weapon energy bar per use, meaning you have 112 uses before you can run out. (Metal Blade is tied with Needle Cannon for the third lowest weapon energy ammo consumption in the entire Mega Man (Classic) Series). 3: It's decently powerful, it affects 4 of the bosses in the game and it affects all but 3 of the regular enemies in the game. 4: Due to a glitch, you can never run out if you use Metal Blade: use Metal Blade 3 times, pause and you should see the weapon energy bar not go down at all - it's called the "Infinite Weapon Ammo Glitch" for that reason. (I believe Shadow Blade and Needle Cannon has the "Infinite Weapon Ammo Glitch" too, although I believe you have to do the "Infinite Weapon Ammo Glitch" in Mega Man 3 slightly different from the one in Mega Man 2).
