  • A playthrough of Capcom's 1987 platformer for the NES, Mega Man.
Mega Man marked the beginnings of one of Capcom's largest and most successful franchises. With it, Keiji Inafune and friends established the blue bomber as an icon of the 8-bit generation, and did so with an incredible amount of panache for a game of its age, especially given that it was a new IP.
Mega Man isn't as refined or as balanced as many of its sequels, but still it handily earns its spot among the NES's top-shelf action games. It's also the hardest of the six original NES titles, with punishing boss fights and some insanely hard-to-avoid obstacles. It does, however, more than reward you for the effort with the sheer quality of its gameplay.
The game has seen a number of rereleases over the years, as well as a couple of remakes. It got a Sega Genesis/Mega Drive remake as part of The Wily Wars, a PS1 release as part of the Rockman Complete Works series (a line of enhanced ports that were also later put on the GameCube/PS2/Xbox in Mega Man Collection), and yet another full remake, Mega Man Powered Up released exclusively for the PSP.
They're all good, but the original NES version is still my go-to!
Whether you like the game or not, it's difficult to not respect it for what it accomplished, both for Mega Man and for action games in general.
Oh yeah, while recording this, I experienced a glitch at 34:35. I've never seen that before in all the times I've played this - I guess it didn't expect me to get hit as the screen was transitioning. I left it in (instead of recording the video over again) because I thought it was a nifty little quirk.
    _
No cheats were used during the recording of this video.

Mega Man teaches me to use the right tool (or weapon) to get the job done. I never excelled at Mega Man, but I do enjoy seeing others tackle the difficulty. I had never seen the Dr. Wily stage in all its entirety until today. Knowing when to switch and use each change effectively really takes persistence, skill, and timing. Congrats to NintendoComplete for this playthrough of Mega Man.

I'll never forget how I reacquired this game, after I initially had it in the early to mid 90's, but foolishly sold it to a friend of mine not too long afterwords when I got sick of it, which I deeply regretted shortly after. I got it back from a kid I went to middle school with, who knew I was a huge Mega Man fan, and offered to sell the game to me for a very generous $5-$10 at the most, way back in 1998. Well the poor chap got kicked out of school the very same day he gave me the game (which I was going to pay him for the next day), and needless to say, got it for free as a result too! The best part about that was the kid didn't even like me, and vice-versa too! Whoever thought he would end up doing me one of the biggest favors of my life by some odd coincidence though!? (L.O.L.!)

The original classic of the series. I was in elementary in 1988. My best friend talked about this game non stop. We both spoke of video games and going through Nintendo power in after school, drawing and joking around and talking about mega man. That I ended up getting mega man 2 by my dad one afternoon. Took that shit to school to show it off even 😂. The game was my favorite game from NES. From there then on I got every mega man game that came out in its release date order either for birthday, Christmas or obsessing and driving my dad crazy to get it for me and would surprise me with it randomly when I arrived home with the game in my room form Sears or toys r us. Good times. Still recall getting the games as if it was last year, Sears upstairs had the Nintendo section which was like a gold mine whenever you saw that nintendo logo hanging over head in the distance through all the clothes rack. The games were all displayed in the locked glass cases surrounding the clerk and all around it was always packed with kids and their dads looking through the glass for their favorite or next title and waiting their turn for the clerk to come around to tend to you. It was like a bar and getting the bartenders attention You were lucky enough if you got the last game that was seen in display case. Sometimes a family would get it right before you. Nowadays you go to target or Walmart or whatever and the video game section is missing that magic from yesteryear. And at toys r us, was always awesome to get your copy of a NES game. It was exciting as shit. Going through the video game isle with hundreds of NES games box photos on the walk and under each box set was a plastic transparent index holder with the some ticket with game number and you would grab one and take it to the back where there was a window and a worker would take your ticket snd bring out the game and you pay up front. If there was no tickets left in the plastic index card holder, it meant the game was sold out. It crushed every boy im sure when they came to grab a ticket only to learn the game is not available and you keep coming back to store to see when the the tickets are stocked full under your games photo. Good times simple times that today’s generation won’t see or appreciate. Those were the days we really appreciated and worked for what we want and took care of it snd took nothing for granted!
Mega man 1 was actually my last MM game I got after MM6. Only because I played it a ton of times at that friends house while I had the rest of the saga at home and didn’t feel the need to buy it until you never saw it available again during the 90’s as games were constantly turned over and taken out of stores…but when I got older and internet was born, ebay was discovered and I purchased mm1 finally for collector reason. Hated that I had that missing title.

    • @Bloodreign1

The one game I was lucky to get the last of at Toys R Us was the PC Castlevania and Contra collection, they had the very last one I'd ever see sell in my town. Otherwise I always got lucky the times I got games at Toys R Us, they never were out of stock for the games I was after.
That is until a certain Game Boy game I wanted turned out to be a bitch to find. Toys R Us nor anyone else had the damned thing, that is until a last resort call to Dillard's Department store turned up the absolute LAST copy I'd ever see for sale back then. The lady who got the game out of the display glass case for me even told me that I got lucky, as soon Dillard's would stop handling video games. I still have that copy in box complete to this day, beaten many, many times over the years.
That game, Link's Awakening for Game Boy.

Dorian Scott, she's *Youmu Konpaku* from *Touhou Project.* Touhou you might've heard of if you're into kind of cult-level popular Japanese game stuffs, but Touhou is special. ZUN's still making new games for it since the 90s! It's a great series. Anyway, Youmu-chan here is a half-phantom girl who serves Yuyuko Saigyouji in the land of Gensokyo and wields two swords. She was introduced in the seventh game, *Perfect Cherry Blossom* for PC. Although this particular image of her I have here is from a Pokémon-style fangame where you can catch and battle Puppets made in the shape of many characters throughout the series. This is actually a Puppet of Youmu that I took from my Trainer Card in *Touhou Puppet Dance Performance.* You can have these close-ups of the Puppet standing along your own human player character depending on the Puppet you've picked at the very beginning of the game, and thus becomes your starter waifu. Yes, Youmu-chan is mai waifu, and I love her very much!

It always pretty mind-blowing to discover and trigger programing errors that were overlooked and leftover in-game, right??

Yeah, I worried about it glitching too hard and crashing. I didn't want to end the game there so I played it safe.

@@sammyyo461 yeah the first game was so hard for me (probably because I did the bosses out of order) but I just used the pause glitch to one shot everyone. :P

It was extremely hard until you got the hang of it. Back in the day, we were use to games being hard. A lot of NES games needed skill and memorization to get through to the end. Some people will never know.....

It was (is for most) crazy hard. I beat Mega Man 2 several times in the early 90s before I was able to beat the first installment lol Not having E-tanks yet is a pain. Timing jumps was always so hard for me so the Yellow Devil and the Dragon in Mega Man 2 saw me die hundreds of times probably lol

I remember playing this freaking game for like 5 weeks before I realized you could use the other robots' weapons. My fault for beating Gutsman first I guess. :) EDIT: And then the Elecman board was boring and tedious and you were rewarded by gettin yer ass kicked :)

i wonder how a ds remake would serve this.
like, at the top you have your gameplay and score, and the bottom shows your weapons, your health and lives, and a progress bar.
    that'd be pretty cool
also the soundtrack is gonna be rushjet1 covers

The very few positive things that came from this Covid pandemic, 1 being I had purchased a NES System, then purchased a Famicom Multicartridge, with 154 Nostalgic Nintendo Games, Megaman is by far the hardest game out of the Megaman series. Was this title projected to have a sequel, yet a whole series? I'm spending more time today working on these great NES games rather than the new stuff that's being launched. I guess it's a personal preference.

I got this yesterday with the Legacy Collection for my 2Ds. And I didn't get to know that this was HARD AS HECK (For me. I bet when you guys play it, you make it look like a joke.) I'd die to the Big Eyes in Cut Man's stage, Always get hit and fall into the first pit at the beginning of Wily stage 2, I'd get stuck in Ice Man's stage with the disappearing blocks, I'd get knocked off the ladders by the Watchers in Elec Man's stage, I died a lot and I repeat A LOT of times to Copy Robot, to the Robo Masters all in once, and the stupid tracks in Wily stage 4 and Guts Man's stage. It was absolutely annoying. But I finally did it. Thank mother of God.

You have discovered a possible brand-new speedrunning glitch! I was able to replicate this, and the first time I did it, CWU-01P only had 4 bars of health and I quickly finished the boss due to only one form being able to appear.
Every other time, however, my results were exactly the same, wth the boss having full health. I'm thinking a speedrunner should investigate this, and hopefully we can causethe boss to consistently start with only 4 bars of health. My theory is that certain frames in the game's engine cause the boss's energy to not completely fill up.
I can post part of this video on Twitter. I was able to record 30 seconds from the Switch, but the starting point is right after Mega Man gets hit, and during the point he zips backwards. Let me know!

I played this game when I was in public school and my Aunt bought this when my parents scolded me on it. THANK HER for that. She had the money to afford it and I still have the fucking cart until this day. I was so happy to play it until my dad bought me Mega Man 2 later on after I made it to the fourth grade

"When I was growing up and going to school, all
I really wanted to do was be an artist. I actually
got my first job at Capcom through my artistic skill
and it wasn't until Mega Man was done that I really
became interested in game development. When
I joined the Mega Man team his outline existed,
his basic pixel structure was done - kind of the
skeleton, if you will - but things like his final look,
as well as his jumping animation and so on, still had
to be completed. He existed as a single sprite; no
animations and no poses existed - they hadn't
been designed when I joined the team.
The first Mega Man had a team of six people, and we
did it in about four months. Which means that,
relatively speaking, there wasn't really that much of
an investment from the company. If it had not come
out, if it had been cancelled, it wouldn't have been
the end of the world. Maybe for the first two-thirds
of my career, I was operating under that sort of
style. Obviously there was pressure, but it was
a relatively free environment, because games
    didn't take long to develop."
