@Angel DJ Gaming Software Creations did not make Tom and Jerry on the SNES, it was Riedel Software Productions, and Designer Software made Mickey's Ultimate Challenge. They were gonna make Tom vs. Jerry, though.
I loved this game as a kid and it still holds up. It kinda gets under my skin when people generalize that "Tim and Geoff Follin composed amazing music for trash games" because this isn't trash by any means. It's an above average platformer if you've actually played enough NES platformers to know what the average is.
I enjoyed this one. The difficulty was just right, not frustrating nor a walk in the park. What impressed me was the stage design, I genuinely could FEEL the sheer size of the levels from the perspective of a mouse, the detail that went into making a realistic kitchen, bathroom, attic, etc etc. All the furniture and utility you would expect in a home are there and scaled correctly. And there is fall damage, so giving the player that dread of falling off high places is a nice touch.
I quite liked this one back in the day. Not too difficult, not too easy, fairly short as well... and the signature "Tom and Jerry" charm's still there. It's not the best game ever material or anything, but definitely worth a playthrough.
It's foolish to think you can never be surprised when it comes to developers and video games. Here we have something outstanding from Hi-Tech Expressions, of all companies. The stars really aligned with this one!
@Klaymodo Post Office I'm sorry, I should have phrased it better. What I meant to say is that most games Hi-Tech published were not very good. I had the misfortune of playing the Genesis _Barbie_ game when I was a young girl.
Hi-Tech only published the game, but they did make the wise choice in outsourcing the game to Software Creations, which was based in Manchester, England, UK.

This game slaps, I've seen and read enough terribile reviews. Having a lot of fun with it. Also, discovering that cool idle animation was cherry on top. Just stand for a little while...
This is how you make a game on an established brand. It’s nothing great but it treats the characters with respect and keeps the spirit of the cartoon. You can see the effort put into the game even in its simplistic nature. The game is charming and enjoyable to play. On the other hand a game like “Back to the Future” on Nes is a flaming pile of excrement and should be buried alongside the Atari’s E.T in the middle of the desert.
Awful reviews? Seems like people have no idea how to review games. This is like, one of the few quality T&J games during entire 8-16 bit era. Genesis and SNES ones are okay at best despite advanced graphics.
@@_space_cat_ yeah bad reviews are all over the place. Some of them complain about the difficulty and how the game is uninspired could of put more thought into this. I total call bogus because this was the age developers were testing the market after the game crash. So to them complaining means they don't even play games at all.
Not a big fan of Software Creations, but I remember my cousin getting this and we played it a bit. It was an introduction to what I later found out was the Follin composition style, and the European warbly/arpeggiated chiptune sound. Very different from the NES music coming out of Japan and America.
I wonder what stopped Tom and Jerry from getting better games in more modern hardware, I assume it was the lack of better developers that could try better with a license that didn't had much to offer. That being said, this is clearly one of their better games and makes a great job showing that with the correct developer, a licensed quality game is achievable. I want to take this opportunity for mention that android gacha Tom and Jerry game, it hilariously is quite popular in Asian countries.
If i remember correctly i found a way to completly skip the whole level at 14:22. Just wait for a leaf from left side to pass through the gap and jump on it - leaf will push Jerry through the gap, then just follow the right path to the end of stage
I'm surprised to see so many positive comments. Sure the game is well-animated and graphically impressive, I agree, but the soundtrack becomes very repetitive as you play and my God, the difficulty. I don't know what kind of a gamer you gotta be to say this game is easy. The Chip and Dale games are easy to me, but not this one. You're stuck in a maze, enemies keep respawning and you can't have more than 9 lives which are hard to get anyway. The game is nostalgic but I think it was one of the most frustrating games I ever played as a kid. And this comes from someone who can complete Super Contra without dying at least once.
Yea Nintendo complete just has skills i think this game is awesome but to say it wasn’t frustratingly difficult is a bold face lie I beat 78 NES games in 3 years recently and this one in my top 10
