    They just should’ve made Rook’s face more messed up. He’s supposed to be this broken android that got melted with acid and yet his face is barely melted or even messed up if he was a little more broken apart, and they kept the voice. It would’ve been fine.

      I just commented this somewhere else lol, I thought the same thing! It could have side-stepped the weird deepfake face thing which was distracting to me, and could have added to the gross & creepy factor of the film if they had to deal with an android with a melted face.

      @0volts157 4 месяца назад +2

      Definitely. I thought the same thing, too. There were two shots where I think Rook looked fit-for-purpose. 1: Its initial awakening (dark and angled shot with its contorted face). 2: when it crawled across the control panel to check on the status of compound Z-01 (mostly its head was downward facing and then side profiled). A half-mangled face would have been perfect.

    • @MitchellFace
      @MitchellFace 3 месяца назад +3

      @@0volts157 that’s what I’m saying! like it looked enough like him in the dark. Like i already could tell it was him, that actual reveal was such a spotlight reference reveal, like, “OH MY GOD IT’S THE GUY FROM THE THING!” Much like I thought with Peter Cushing’s Tarkin in Rogue One, less would’ve been better. Like when Krennick talks to him and all you could see was his reflection, that would’ve been perfect. They didn’t need to take it further than that. Same with this, they could’ve been so much more creative and subtle with it. We didn’t need to see his face like that, if we just heard his voice it would’ve been enough.

    Fun fact, this was originally going to be about space farmers on a space moon, in space. Using a bluer hue, more in line with the originals. They were going to be focusing more on the empire like corp, and the kids joining together to fight against the system. Kinda like in Star Wars. Hence the original production title: Rebel Moon. • @rubaiyat300
      @rubaiyat300 3 месяца назад

      @@bradleyc543 I guess terraforming could be doing the heavy lifting but if a planet was dark because it actually received no sunlight at all because it was in a shadow, it would probably be frozen solid at roughly the ambient temperature of space hundreds of degrees Celsius below zero. If it was sufficient geothermal to fight that off then you have the problem of the entire surface being basically lava. Obviously this is all fictional nonsense, but I reckon the easiest solution was it's dark because of it being cloudy, like that tragic children's short story about colonists on Venus (written when we thought the clouds on Venus were storm clouds).

    Ik people are mixed on the ending but I freaking loved it. Similar to the first alien movie, the threat isn’t so much the xenomorph as it is the human’s hubris and fear. Kay took the serum out of fear for her baby, but it was the hubris of the main characters that didn’t account for what Rook meant by an “upgrade” for humanity. So the idea that even after they escaped the xenomorph, there was another looming threat I think added to the horror factor. And my favorite thing about the xenohuman hybrid is that it falls right into the uncanny valley. It looks alien but it also has enough human features that it’s not immediately clear what animalistic traits it inherited and that added a whole new level of suspense.

    • @afunkymonke
      @afunkymonke 4 месяца назад +20

      Not to mention they take the serum and leave without actually seeing all the footage. If they waited like 30 seconds, they'd have seen the truth. Granted the situation, but still.
      It really is sad that she could have actually survived until she injected herself with that stuff. I actually thought she'd end up in cyro and the next movie would follow up on that plot point as like "Oh fuck when's it gonna happen" to build some tension. But I guess we have to end an alien movie with fighting one alien on a ship and shooting it into space out an airlock.

      The Offspring was creepy as hell! I got the Alien Resurrection vibes they were laying down in the finale, but the concept was far and away superior to the Newborn from that film.
      When the Offspring went back to his mother, I wondered if it was going to feel love for her (like in Resurrection). When it began to nurse the black goo from her breast, it was ghoulish! The sick grin it had on it's face as it thought it was about to kill Rain, was terrifying. I freakin' loved the movie!

      Actually, if you remember, she was told by an android that serum would heal her injuries, she literally was given no other information and doesn't know why the other girl wouldn't let her take it. She didn't even see the video of it healing the rat. As far as she knows, Andy wouldn't lie to her, she thinks she's dying, it only makes sense for her to take it, baby or not.

    • @juicestains52
      @juicestains52 4 месяца назад +15

      @@zogwort1522I don’t think any of that qualifies as the “meat” of the movie. You’re just complaining about little details that don’t actually matter to the story. It doesn’t matter if the xenomorph doesn’t get sucked out into space, what matters is that there’s enough remnants on the ship for the main characters to understand what happened. It doesn’t matter if the facehugger is still alive after it impregnated her, what matters is that now she has a chesburster which serves as a chekhov’s gun to the story. I judge movies based on the effectiveness of the story, not how air tight the technicalities are.

    • @LordVolkov
      @LordVolkov 4 месяца назад +2

      @@eyespy3001 Using Fassbender again, even for a non-David android like Walter, wouldn't jive with the timeline I suspect (Covenant is set 20ish years before Alien, but they were in space for a long time before the movie starts). Andy is already an obsolete model by the time of the Ash/Rook, who is extremely obsolete by the time of Bishop. The production androids come out at a fairly steady pace in the WeylandYutani-verse and using Ian's face firmly grounds Romulus in the specific era gap between Alien and Aliens. I suspect that the Andy model replaced the Walter, and then Ash for Andy.
      Having said all that... I think using de-aging on Lance Henriksen as a prototype-Bishop that's ruthless like an Ash could have been cool and a more ethical choice than using Ian (even with his widow's consent).

    Going into this movie, I just wanted it to re-establish why the xenomorph is such a feared creature and horror icon, and for the first act or so I thought we were getting that. I was so disappointed when it quickly devolved into a homage / replay of the original quadrilogy, to the point where the xenomorph isn't even the final threat. The 'offspring' was an interesting idea and made for some effective shots and scares, but I don't feel like it belonged in this movie - or at least the xenomorphs shouldn't have been so quickly shoved out of the way to make room for it.

      I don't know where people get this delusion that the alien is some sort of massive threat and takes damage like a truck. They're about as strong as tissue paper and always have been. they're not strong, they're not really that deadly unless you have no weapons. They have literally always relied on sheer numbers to overwhelm whatever they're attacking.
      The only reason it wiped out the crew in Alien is because they were a bunch of hick miners with no weapons on board, they had to make those flamethrowers. They took out the space marines in Aliens because there were so many of them, it was overwhelming.

    My immediate take away after seeing this film was that a quick edit to cut out some of the more awkward moments would make this movie 50% better. It feels like the film was not edited down enough for the purpose of making it a theatrical length. I strongly disliked the direct quote references from Alien 1 and 2 as well as some of the plot hand holding and and moments like the one after Andy refuses to open the door to save the pregnant girl and rain says to Andy "how could you" even though Andy already explained his decision saved all their lives. Cutting out as much of Rooks appearance as possible would also go a long way. This movie did not suck but it has a lot of suck in it.

    Idk, I saw it as less a Greatest Hits compilation and more… a remix compilation. The ideas weren’t new, but the execution consistently was. Every call-back had a new little twist on the original. My only gripe would probably be Rook’s “you have my sympathies” callback, which did seem a little shoehorned. Hardly enough to sink the whole movie for me, though, I’m not that unreasonable lmao
    EDIT: also, I really didn’t think the Ian Holm CG was that bad, I don’t know what y’all saw that I didn’t. It’s hardly Rogue One Tarkin-level quality, and tbh the jankiness really worked for the character, at least for me. Plus, like I said in a different comment, Alvarez went above and beyond to get the family’s blessing, he got an actor to stand in, made a whole-ass animatronic, and specifically spoke on how he has no interest in digitally replacing actors, not least of all because one actor costs a whole lot less than the people and resources needed to recreate Holm the way he did. Imagine if the pregnant Kay, not Rain, had unexpectedly turned out to be our "final girl," the way Ripley did in the original. Imagine if it was her standing over the last dead alien stowaway, and her wearing the Miraculous Medal around her neck earlier in the film had turned out to be a thematic hint of the triumph to come.
    "And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to bear a child, that he might devour her child when she brought it forth"; "Our Lady has already crushed his head".
    That would have been a movie for all time. It's the kind of edifying victory that "A Quiet Place" did so well.

    I find it interesting how no one can fully agree on what they liked or disliked within the film. I’ve heard people praise the first 30 minutes of the film and dislike the latter half of the film. Whereas others state the contrary. In my opinion, the areas the film succeeds in, it really succeeds in. In the areas the movie fails, it really fails.

      Its oddlt akin to BVS that way, except that the vast majority of critics liked this and disliked BVS, but the reasoning for both was all over the place.
      I think, like BVS though, theres a core set of basic complaints and forceach person, YMMV on whether they're important to you, with the rest being subjective.
      For this movie that core complaint is:
      1)- Bad CGI deep fake scenes/character. 90% of effects are gorgeous then your eyes are assaulted by uncanny valley.
      2)- the first half is slow but tight. The second half is more squerrelly. Its faster which is good, but not all of the ideas work and the fact so many characters are unlikable undermines the ratcheted up stakes.
      3)- the third act twist doesnt feel earned to many, and that, plus the "get away from her..." line, makes the film feel derivative to these people.
      Regardless of how bad feeling derivative actually is, for those who hate hate hate both Prometheus AND Resurrection, the contents of the twist brings a bad taste to theur mouth.

      @@anthonymartensen3164The Rook stuff was unnecessary. I found a lot of the characters and dialogue insufferable. The dad jokes thing with Andy had me cringing, and not because of the jokes themselves, but it felt like a character quirk you’d find in the MCU. I also thought the facehuggers in the water and hallway scenes were cliche and didn’t do enough to be inventive and interesting. The acid blood in zero G was fantastic. There’s lots to praise. I really appreciate how the filmmakers didn’t steer away from Prometheus lore. The practical AND digital FX teams knocked it out of the park. The conception of the plot itself is to be applauded. Didn’t feel too heavily forced and felt realistic in universe.

The rat, the pre mentioned scene where the hybrid pops in one last time, rook as a sort of deepfake was very noticeable. But I also think that it may have been BECAUSE there was so much practical usage that it may have been a heavier contrast. Still amazing and I acknowledge the work that had to be done for the film both practical and digital, but if we had to point out faults I think that would be one of them.

    Just got back from seeing this and absolutely loved it. My first time seeing an Alien movie in the cinema and I'm really glad this was the one becuase it was beutiful. Fell in love with Alien Isolation a couple of years ago and I'm so happy they used it as such heavy inspiration for the set design. Seeing these environments and the Space station backed by the astroid belt on the big screen was such a joy.
    I have very few complaints, the first and most major is the use of Ian Holm. even if you look past the moral quandries of brigning back a dead actor in the way (and that's a big if). it just didn't look very good and took me out of the film. I also felt it made some of the exposition feel a bit clunky and the film would have probably been better if trhey just cut him out entirely.
    I also found all the many nostalgia moments to be far too on the nose and take me out of the film, especially the get away from her you ... line.
    Last small nitpick is I kinda wish it was more gruesome. Like when that guy got covered in acid I was expecting it to eat all the wway through him and was a bit disapointed it stopped so early.
    Those complaints didn't stop me from having an amazing time though. Still an excellent film in my view.
