    XBlastOS (Flash crcwell.bin to tsop or to an aladdin or similar modchip)
    bitbucket.org/psyko_chewbacca...
    This is importantant if you want to be able to test 1 ram chip at a time.
    Xblast will boot if you install one ram at a time as long as they're soldered properly and not bridging.
    Other bios' require all four ram chips to be installed perfectly or the console will frag.
    It's not manditory but I'd highly recommend it to save yourself a headache.

    You make it look easy. First time I tried to solder an Xbox mobo was in 2003 and I gave up early. Up until somewhat recently, most of my soldering jobs were absurdly easy stuff up until 2020 when I needed to mod an GPU. This involved moving and replacing a couple of very tiny resistors. It was challenging, but after that I feel much more comfortable and capable of taking on something like this RAM upgrade job. Thanks for the video!

    Gotta thank you for breaking down how to drag-solder those RAM chips. Completed the mod yesterday on a 1.1. Aside for one chip where I couldn't fix my slight mistake (misaligned exactly one side of the chip, had to gently bend the RAM legs and solder each hand by hand. Pain.), every other chip went smooth enough and it works great.
    And thanks to your tips on drag soldering thru the video, I can now tackle more advanced stuff.

    It takes great skill without burning the chip or pcb board, but I use a heat gun after freshening the pads up with some solder and flux to install resistors, some MOSFETS, some capacitors, diodes, some ram modules and a few other modules. This method is faster when working with a quota at an RMA center.

    Mm I always use flux. As you probably know, just helps the solder flow, might help those pads turn out nicer when you desolder them; noticed they may have gotten pretty hot. Also, you can use low melt solder. The factory solder joints, often times, have a pretty high melting point. By adding low melt solder, it helps that factory solder melt a lot faster, less overall heat exposure.

    One thing I see different in this tutorial compared to others is the point at which the memory test is performed. Normally I see folks will fire up that XblastOS memory test after each individual chip is installed. That makes the troubleshooting a lot easier. Tried this upgrade a few months ago on a system and what a disaster. Tried doing the upgrade without removing the existing solder. WOW. How frustrating that was... Removed it and gave up and used system as 64mb. May eventually try this but down to one working system. (Other system isn't reading ANYTHING from IDE).
    Anyways, GREAT video and very informative.
    EDIT: Also, the flux I have is old and freaking sucks. It's solid as can be and I have to melt it to use it. I know I need to buy some liquid but I keep pushing it off.

    • @shanejohns7901
      @shanejohns7901 2 года назад +2

      It's not all that much different from a PC. The similarities far outnumber the differences. Less RAM for the OS means that the OS has to do more work as it swaps out unused RAM to the hard drive to free up RAM. The OS doesn't get 'closed' when you run a game. It's still there in the background, along with anything else you might have running as a utility or whatnot. Modern OSes also will buffer drive reading into available free RAM. So that a subsequent read of that drive sector will not actually require a fetch from the drive unless the block has changed. It'll simply read it from RAM, which is much faster. So a game you just played will open back up more quickly, except after a reboot (which usually clears RAM). The hard drive file allocation table gets read into RAM as well, as you explore it -- no matter how much RAM you have. And it stays in RAM until reboot (but can be swapped to drive). So if you have a drive with tons of nested folders each with tons of individual files inside, and you looked inside each folder, you'll have a large part of RAM/Swap occupied by your drive layout info. So the more RAM you have, you can have faster access to larger drives with more folders/files. Though to really get full benefit from this, you'll want to minimize reboots.

    • @ModzvilleUSA
      @ModzvilleUSA  2 года назад +1

      on 1.0s - 1.5s you can simply remove the clock capacitor. On 1.6s they need to be replaced if they're faulty but those aren't known to leak like the previous revisions.
      Beyond that, just check the large caps near the cpu / gpu. Those tend to buldge resulting in no power when they go bad.

The bios trace gets cut with that installation so I gotta repair that trace when removing the chip for Free McBoot setups. The Neo 4 chip interferes with the component video output unless it's in-game. I've got 3 of these systems that I want to restore. Thqnks again.

      Dang, i've never heard tale of the Neo 4 until now. Couldn't really find any info on it when looking it up. If you're willing to part with it, I'd love it for the collection. I can take a stab at removing it for you no problem, just need to figure out what trace got cut in order to repair the trace.
      Shoot me an email if you'd like and I'm down to help work this out.

      Thanks guys! Yeah I got 3 of them that I modded long ago. It's a no-swap modchip for CD games & a single DVD swap for DVD games. I can't recall the # of wires, but I did all 3 systems, myself. My brother & friends parted with them & I just want the component video output to work again in the menus, which the Neo4 disables due to a cut trace that bypasses the stock Sony bios. The lasers are weak & I want to make them stock again for Free McBoot/OPL harddrive setups. The PS2s are V4s & older. I keep them around for their Firewire port, which is supported in Armored Core 2 & AC: Another Age..... 2 of my favorite PS2 games. I'll be in touch, Modzville. I'd love to see a video 👍

    • @TexasHollowEarth
      @TexasHollowEarth 2 года назад

      CPU... yes. GPU.... I don't believe so. Alot of X-Box games require patching to run properly with an upgraded cpu, but the ram upgrade makes for a smoother upgrade. Modchip bios just needs to support the 128MB ram, such as the IND bios or Xecuter3 chip/bios.

      A few Sega Chihiro arcade games will work on original Xbox consoles with 128MB of RAM. Those games include:
      Crazy Taxi High Roller
      Ghost Squad
      Gundam Battle Operating Simulator
      Ollie King
      Outrun 2
      Sega Club Golf 2006 Next Tours
      Sega Network Taisen Mahjong MJ 2 and 3
      The House of the Dead III
      Virtua Cop 3
      Ford Racing Full Blown
      Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 1 and 2
      Many emulators on original Xbox can take advantage of 128MB of RAM
      Game debugging performance is improved (Xbox development kits had 128MB of RAM).
      So an original Xbox with 128MB RAM upgrade isn't quite as useful as a hardmod or softmod for the system. It's more of a mod for those who want to try out those Sega arcade games, and run additional emulators, or get into Xbox game development.

      @@TheBlackbirdii your Xbox already needs to be hard drive set up running a dashboard for example like avalanche Evo X unleash X etc. once that is all said and done that’s when you would do the upgrade and you need to install a bios depending on your hard mod whether it’s a Alladin chip or an executor 3 chip. you would need a special BIOS to take advantage of that 128 MB of RAM

    Actually IVe seen more problems caused by changing the thermal paste than not. The mounting system for the heatsink is weird and seems to permanently lose some of its tension the first time you remove it on some systems. From that point on, your chip will run slightly hotter due to the worse contact. Its been documented on the forums before. Always posts about it running hot after thermal paste change.

    I never understand this "old solder" panic I often see on youtube. Solder is not getting old, it might crack if some constant force is getting applied to the joint during some period of time, but once you reflow it, its again same as new. There is only one reason to remove stock solder - when you're working with cheap chinese crap and the solder quality is questionable. Otherwise there is ABSOLUTELY no point in doing this

    • @ModzvilleUSA
      @ModzvilleUSA  2 года назад +2

      You completely missed the point. I was quite clear that the main reason we wick the pads is so the ram chip sits flush on the board, it makes installing the chip much easier.
