Childhood Obesity is a serious epidemic in North America. Nearly a third of our children are overweight or obese,...and the numbers continue to rise.
At younger and younger ages, Doctors are treating children with significant medical complications related to being obese, such as, Type-2 Diabetes, Hypertension, and elevated Cholesterol.
We're at risk of raising supersized kids who may live sicker and die younger than the generation before them.
"Our Supersized Kids" profiles four families whose grade school children are overweight or obese. Each of these families are actively working to help their child turn around an out-of-control weight gain. The documentary highlights their struggles and successes, along with providing helpful tips from Pediatricians.
KSPS exists to improve the quality of life of each person we reach. KSPS content broadens horizons; engages and connects; enlightens, inspires and educates. KSPS is an international multimedia network providing quality programming.

I'm interested in other things. How can they eat so much at all? It's 1,5 pound of food and 1500 kcal at one time(!), for example, average adult man need 2700 per day.
I'm 24, I weigh 220 pounds and have 3 times/week hard trainings in gym but I can not eat so much at one time.

Evgeniy Litvin Well I used to be about 250+ a couple years ago thank god I lost some of that now I hover at about 180 now. To get to a state of eating 5 sausage mcmuffins for breakfast you need to condition your stomach to eat like that on a daily basis. I used to eat 4 jr. chickens a lrg fries and large drink or like 3 plates of food a the Chinese smorg. I could have eaten more. Now I sometimes get full halfway through the fries and a drink.

They didn't start buying snacks of that kind until we were in our late teens, and by then we were able to control ourselves and eat responsibly.

However, the portions and types of foods offered determine whether it's healthy or harmful. It takes a lot of strength to acknowledge that your actions are a contributing factor. It’s when they exceed the 1500-2200 calorie per day limit where it becomes an issue. Portioning isn’t an issue if they would stick to limits and those limits on food still have to fit into the reason of not pigging out on shit in those calorie barriers. My mother is obese and my entire life, starting at 6 would bully me mercilessly for being skinny. I have always been and still continue to be the skinniest girl in class and I'll be starting college this fall. The only person I ever remember being skinnier than me throughout all of school was an anorexic girl in 10th grade. The constant barrage of "you eat like a bird" "that's rabbit food" "why do you work out, you're already skinny" was pathetic. These same people and parents think they're justified and they're not, they're killing themselves and their children. My mother also had a son (my half brother) who is 3 now and he gets frozen pot pies, lolli's, and chips for dinner. He was BORN fat because my mother is so fucking horrible to her body and everyone around her in general. You would think she would have learned something when she developed diabetes woke pregnant with him. I can only hope she dies before too much damage is done to that poor baby.

flyingvigil you're not considering the fact that it may be emotionally hard to lose weight and that simply eating more fruit and veg will not solve the whole issue, though it may help. Also, lots of parents are unaware that their children are overweight or obese and even though they home cook because they don't know how much to give their children as assume kids will finish eating when they are full, though this tends not to happen. What parents should do is gradually stop buying things like crisps/chips, sweets/candy and processed meals and have way less takeaways or meals out and their kids will naturally follow. Also, they should stop buying fizzy drinks. If their kids want fizzy stuff, give them carbonated water. Easy. In addition, families should add more expertise into their routines. For example, kids go to a fun dance club on weekdays and swimming with parents on Sunday, etc. If parents for some reason can't take children to classes, the kids can do stuff at home or in the garden or the adults can buy a trampoline and each child does 30 mins a day. Parents could get healthy cook books and get the kids involved in cooking to tempt them to eat it and get to know healthy foods so as adults they can cook well themselves. Also, everyone should eat on small plates and not have seconds. If after 20-30 minutes they are still hungry give them a piece of fruit. Maybe have Sunday as a treat day and have a scoop of ice cream with strawberries for dessert and once a month a takeaway or eating out. See, it's not as simple as 'just eat fruit and vegetables'. There is much more to it.
Obviously, it's the parents choice as to how much they personally weigh, but their children have little control over their own weight so it is the duty of a parent to keep their children at a healthy weight. I hope you see there are several factors to losing weight effectively and safely now.

I agree! When I was a child in the 70's and 80's, we had lunches to beat the band! We had oil-fried chicken, yeast rolls with real butter pats, and mashed potatoes with gravy at least once per week. However, unlike today, we had 45-60 minutes of recess and we romped and played the entire time-running, climbing, etc.. Maybe one child out of 120 in a grade level then was heavier than he/she should be. Nowadays, thanks to the demand to hold teachers and students accountable to an ever-increasing "bar" of testing, recess periods have shrunk to 10-15 minutes per day. Despite the Auschwitz-sized portions of virtually non-caloric foods that Michelle Obama has shoved down our throats, many children are overweight. Leaving school hungry at the end of the day, many are gorging on candy bars and chips to make up for the dearth of calories they are suffering during the day. I NEVER recall being even the least bit hungry at the end of the school day, yet children today are-and kindergarteners are trashing food left and right that won't fit in their bellies and my fifth grade boys are famished-they all get the same portion-a ridiculous policy.

Today they DO have 45-60min of recess. I'm a 21st century child, and in my primary school EVERYONE was running and climbing. There was barely 1 of the 600 kids who wasn't running around. Although there are many more obese children then before, this is still a stereotype.

I remember when I was 10 I was 4'10" and weighed 115lbs. So I was about 20 to 30lbs overweight. The people who would make the most overweight references? My family. We'd be eating dinner for instance, and whenever I'd comment that I liked a certain food, my older brother would say something like "That's the most fattening thing on the table" or "Oooh carbs" sarcastically. My aunt even laughed at me once when I said I wanted some chicken skin when we had fried chicken one night. I didn't know that was the most fattening part. I didn't know anything about fat, calories, carbs, etc. For instance I thought you could drink all the orange juice you wanted because it was technically a fruit (or came from one). I didn't know it had extra sugar. I didn't even know sugar turned to fat f you didn't burn it off. I didn't have that knowledge, and my family was judging me like I was gonna be overweight the rest of my life. Once I turned 12 I hit puberty and slimmed out. I'm modeling for a Seattle company now. But boy I have some bad memories that still piss me off to this day about my weight and my family making rude remarks.

I'm done with people blaming parents for this (childhood) obesity epidemic. Food deserts are very prevalent in Black, Latino, and especially Native American communities (as well as plenty of low-income white communities). All they have access to is liquor stores, gas stations, and fast food chains at every corner. Not a grocery store for at least five miles in their radius. Note the fact that so many of these people don't have cars and rely on public transportation (if even a thing) to travel. So an enforced sedentary lifestyle plus junk food for miles equals a promising future for obesity-related health issues, and this is not a result of personal choices. It is a deliberate agenda by the government to marginalize and oppress low-income & majority-minority communities with poor nutrition and little way to escape it. How can we judge parents who have next to no option to save the health of them and their families?

    • @ChaineticsYT

    • @tarag7292
      @tarag7292 2 года назад +1

I agree! That is one thing people don't realize. When you check statistics, obesity is most prevalent in poor neighborhoods around the country. Sure, the poor may be less educated on nutrition, but even if they want to change, so many are working more than one job, so they can't easily quit to free up time to cook healthy meals unless they want to make them outside where they'd be if they get evicted.
And even with all of that, when someone who is obese who lives in those poor neighborhoods finally do want to exercise personal responsibility over their weight, when you live in an area with no grocery store for miles, no parks, and not wanting to risk walking in a poor area that may have a lot of crime, it becomes challenging, if not down right impossible. This is why poor neighborhoods need to have accessibility to healthy options for those who want to partake in it.
Not to mention that healthier foods cost more. I don't give a damn what anyone will say that it's not true and blah blah blah. It is. Buying healthy foods means buying single ingredients, and that cost adds up. But more process foods are already assembled and cheap. Why buy pepperoni, onions, olives, mushrooms, flour, eggs, cheese, sauce, etc to make your own pizza at home when you can buy an already assembled pizza with all the ingredients already there for $5 or $6 dollars? Poor people are going to go with what they're income and/or time will allow.

What if we only ate at home, what we purchased at the supermarket, that didn't come in a package? What would that look like?
Our shopping cart would have in it fresh chicken, fish, pork, beef. It would have in it raw onions, carrots, peppers, tomatoes, celery, zucchini, corn, green beans, broccoli, sweet potatoes, apples, oranges, grapes, bananas. That would leave out much fat, sugar, sodium and artificial ingredients, and every week the garbage can would be half-full.
If we have to peel potatoes, slice and fry and wait for them to be done, we would eat them less often. That's the idea. We would not be uttering the words "supersize it".
If instead of opening up a frozen burrito package and pop it in the microwave, if we made a sandwich instead, we would have to bring out sliced bread, mustard, mayo, layer in the lunchmeat, cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickle, put everything away and then finally eat it. Our eating experience would be quite different!!

I taught for 44 years and while I think high sugar and fat foods are definitely a factor, the elimination of recess from schools has been a major factor as well. In public school high-stakes testing put a lot of pressure on the schools to increase academic time. There were also many ridiculous lawsuits from parents whose children were injured on the playground. While the vast majority of the lawsuits are dismissed, the schools must still pay to defend them. After 33 years in the public schools, I went to a private boys school. Those boys were given the freedom to play and play hard every day and in the 11 years there I could count on one hand the number of boys who were even remotely pudgy and none who were obese. In public school obesity was everywhere and we had to start having a resident school nurse due to the number of Type II diabetics among the student population.

A lot of children's channels like CN, Disney, Nickelodeon, PBS., etc. have known for years that parents use their shows as a baby sitting service. So they've tried to add exercise segments of "stomp with the Mickey!" and "Help us by waving your hands and jumping!" in but do you think those types of parents are going to let their child jump around the house? No, they won't, because they're lazy and put as little effort into their "parenting" as possible. Kids with fat parents are generally doomed from the start.

I'm glad that in our country we have supermarkets which sell a pack of carrots as a snack (it's named Pepík Mrkvička a jeho zdravá svačinka which means Joseph Carrot and his healthy snack). 😀 I know it would be better without a plastic bag but it tells kids to eat carrots instead of sweets. ☺️

The problem is the stupid health and safety laws. When I was a kid we were aloud Swiss Army Knives to cut branches off of trees and make small huts (dens we called them) now you can't do anything
Like that in case you get a scraped knee or a scratch on the arm. That's the problem they can't go outside because it's not fun anymore, you can't do anything!

+Kenny McCormick I wouldn't be that drastic. When I was a kid, I would go with my parents to MD usually once/twice a year - and it was like a celebration. Moderation was the key, and as I grew older I never had the urge of binge-eating MD crap food. On the other hand, those friends of mine who where prohibited from enjoying occasional junk food turned out to look at it as a revenge token, or a way to express rebellion against their parents.

Simple answer to this problem is to eat a whole foods plant based diet. We are eating refined foods our body wasn't designed to digest. Eating a whole foods plant based diet will make you feel strong and great. I have tried it and I have improved on my running time and have been able to run longer. I have even changed my mom as well. She is starting to lose weight and get off her intestinal meds. We don't need to worry about portions when eating a plant based diet. I eat a crap ton and I am lean. Only sad thing is I am underweight currently I am recovering from ed. Let me add the fat you eat is the fat you wear. Animal products, every single one is bad for you, and will clog your arteries.

***** ED means eating disorder it could cause you to randomly binge, or if you were like me count every single calorie which I strictly consumed 1000 everyday while I needed 3,000 just to perform vigorous runs. After finding veganism my muscles are starting to rebuild.

Please stop throwing around the term "Diabetes" there's a difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and while I don't get offended by the term diabetes since I have Type 1, it's wrongly teaching and poisoning the word diabetes.

My little sister is 11 years old, I have moved out. My family eat super unhealthy, my little sister always eats oreos and I talked with my mom about it and she said, " You didn't get fat, you don't have diabetes. Let me do my job, you are super skinny " she though I was talking about me but I just did not want to call my sister overweight because I don't want to hurt her. How can I talk about this with my mom? She doesn't see what she is doing wrong..

Saying someone is fat and that they need to lose weight hurts anyone, it is just like skinny shaming saying " men like meat, not bones " and asking me to eat more. It hurts even if you lose all that weight will you always have that fat image in your head, it can also turn into something bad like eating disorders. I would rather encourage her to work out and eat healthy, not calling her fat and say thst she should lose alot of weight. There is solutions that is not going to destroy her self-esteem and I would rather help her that way..

It's about a healthy diet. Me personally eat a lot of fruits and vegetables and look that I don't eat too much carbs. I'm vegetarian, but if you're not it's good to eat lean meat and chicken, turkey, fish. Portion size is also very important. I often ask myself while I'm eating: am I full? Or do I just want to continue eating because it tastes good?
It's about conscious eating, about what you put into your body.

This is so preventable. Parents and children should get nutrition lessons. Just don't feed your kids crap end of. Fruit/veg no bloody fast food, it's not rocket science. And get their arse out doing some activities.

I'm 139 pounds, 5'2", and I'm considered a few pounds overweight. Every day, I'm drinking water, eating lots of fruits and vegetables, and exercising. Occasionally I might have a few sweets, but recently I've been very hesitant on even that. I have very poor body image and portray myself as fat, and it's really wrecked my confidence, at school and at home. It's stressful and I don't know what to do about it - I just want to be skinny so bad.

    • @Ioannikios174
      @Ioannikios174 5 лет назад +3

Easy fix; buy the vegetables and make the salad yourself. Also, it can be more expensive to eat organic, but honestly we need to see that in light of the fact that we eat too much anyways. Smaller portions and healthier food goes a super long way in changing our body and brain health.
We can also eat less often in a day. We don't need three square meals a day. The food industry has been pushing us to eat bigger portions, more meals, and more junk for a long time. The majority of the American food industry's goal is profit, money and, you guessed it, wealth. That's all it cares about😂 we need to eat less, eat better, and eat less often if we want to be healthy.
