My mother was raised on a farm, and they were very poor. There was no sugar. At Christmas, their treat was a piece of sugar cane, in it's raw state. Cut it and chew it for the sweetness. I hadn't eaten at a burger restaurant for years. Some five years ago on a trip from Italy to northern Germany I stopped at a Burger King, the only restaurant for quite a long time and I became hungry, so it was a choice . I ordered a menu and had to find out that a bottle of water was far more expensive than a vanilla shake. I bought the water anyway and started eating the burger and the fries. It tasted sweet, extremely sweet. The bun was sweet, the sauce had a sugar explosion and even the meat had a funny taste like a sugar substitute. I did not eat it all and left. Half an hour later I became quite sick and had to throw up. The sugar overdose I had, was one to remember. Last year I read that sugar is as addictive as cocaine and very cheap for our food industry to use in all sorts of products. We are hooked to that trash and we have become junkies. The only way to become healthier is lowering the use of that bit by bit and becoming very aware of the absolte filth many feed their bodies with.

Something similar happened to me; I stopped eating junk food in the late 90s, but one afternoon in 2005 I had to go to a job interview; it has been a long day and I was starving, I did not have the time to go home and cook so I grabbed a burger, some fries, and a milkshake from MacDonald's... luckily I made it through the interview (and got the job), but it was in the nick of time because I had already begun yo feel ill at the end of the interview and by the time I got home, I rushed straight for the toilet...and there I sat for most of the night with stomach cramps and...well, I'll spare you the details. And I do not care what some might say; meat, bread, and vegetables are not meant to make you feel that way because after all, I home cook and eat all three food groups at home and that never causes me problems. My guess is that it was as OP said, am incredibly increase in my blood sugar levels, but I bet that all the transfats in the junk food had something to do with it as well.

I changed my eating routine a few years ago in order to lose some weight. I was successful and continue this routine so as to maintain this lower weight. The routine includes eating less food, obviously, and trying to make sure the food I do eat has some nutritional value. One result has been an increased sensitivity to tastes and flavors - now just about ANYTHING tastes good. I have found that I don't have to be bludgeoned by the sugar, salt, and fat that characterize fast and junk food. Now a hamburger or pizza is an occasional treat to enjoy, rather than a regular diet that keeps me full and uninterested in less over flavored foods.

Maybe by coming to terms with the fact that real food has always been expensive. From the times when people risked their lives to hunt an animal, through hard work on the crops, and time spent on cooking, to eventually paying a higher price for quality produce. Food is life and therefore it won't be cheap. You can get food like substances for cheap, but real food comes with a price.
I'm not rich at all, but I have managed to give up all UPFs. I buy the highest quality flour to bake my bread, live cultured fermented veggies to maintain my gut health, I snack on fresh and dried fruit and nuts. Yes, it's not cheap, but 1) I'd rather save on other things like electronics, clothes and going out 2) once you're used to real food something quite wonderful happens - you need less food. I think UPFs make us starve for real nutrients, so our instinct is to eat more. But when we give our bodies the nutrients, the body says thank you, I've had enough.

The problem with the traffic light system is that it doesn’t indicate the nutritional value of the fat etc. Quality of food is also important, E.G. a piece of fruit that naturally contains sugar, but also fibre etc, versus a sugary cereal bar.
There needs to be a mindset and cultural change that encourages health and personal responsibility to learn what’s good to eat for your body and long-term health.

    I'm absolutely a sweet tooth😂.
But now that I cook myself meals.
    I actually lost sm weight.
Sure sometimes I use sm sugar for dinner.
For example sm cinnamon for curry or for pastry that I make myself.
But that's at least controlled and I eat way less sugar than what is recommended from any health politics here in germany.
It isn't as tasty as chocolate yes.
But it's healthy and can taste good.
We also have to start making babie food ourselves.
A good prepared vegetables pan blended for the babie/kid.
And that as a meal prep for many days saves not only time.
But also money, is more healthy if made the right way and makes the kid not as addicted later on.
And it's more used to it.
Sure sm sweets should be allowed.
But that through fruits or controlled sweets intake.
If you show the kids from early age sweets can be harmful.
Then they will understand it sooner or later in life.
Also cooking with not much time is possible.
You just have to know what is possible.
As parents we have the responsibility atleast for the first years.
    Until they make food themselves.
We can show kids a different life if we invest our time into making the life healthy.

For me the supermarket cart vs basket results are the opposite. Because I can't carry a heavy basket for any length of time, I tend to buy less - only a few essentials. When I use the cart, each time I glance at it I am influenced to buy more because I can easily push it, or even lean on it if necessary - thus I buy more with the cart.

At least I don't really snack as a matter of preference and principal. The only snack I've eaten in the last 5 years are... chocolate that I'm rotating out of my emergency supply and I think a total of maybe 3 serving of ice cream on very hot days.

True & real reasons as to why people eat junk food:-
    1. Fruits & vegetables are way more expensive than junk food.
    2. No one cares anymore about health as moat people are suffering with mental illness (one or many).
    3. Junk food is readily makes you feel better & because of the cheap price range, junk food is seen as a "better" option.
    4. Cheapest foods available.
    5. Most people don't care anymore about health.
    6. Not everyone is educated enough on food & especially junk foods.
    7. Emotions over logic when it comes to food.

No true at all. Fruits, vegetables, beans, grains, seeds…… just to name a few are some of the earths most healthiest food and they are very clean to eat and affordable (Super cheap) even dollar stores have 1lb bag of lentils, beans…. For ex. A whole family can make and eat a delicious veggie soup by adding just a few veggies.
While processed junk food such as chips, cookies, cakes, ice cream, candy, pastries are way more expensive! It’s a persons choice to chose a poor lifestyle or a thriving one.
