I’m a 27 year old female woke up one day stopped drinking and I’m so glad I did I’m at almost half a year without partaking in alcohol no hangovers! It’s amazing to see how many “friendships” were just drinking buddies.
Quoting Leo McGarry "My problem is not that I want 1 drink. My problem is that I want 10 Drinks!" "I just do not understand how or why someone would leave a half a glass of wine at the table." As for me? My problem is that drinking hard liquor actually makes me thirsty which only more liquor can resolve.
I use to love drinking. I rarely drink now, but not because I’m making an effort not to. As I got older it just became less and les appealing. The alcohol ‘high’ has become something I tend to avoid rather than pursue. It’s simply no longer enjoyable, mentally or physically. Just my personal experience.
I quit alcohol over a month ago, after years of heavy drinking. Can't say that I miss it at all! A good night's sleep, followed by a lovely morning with a clear mind far outweighs any high that alcohol can provide.
I drank for 40+ years. Quit in 2020 cold turkey. I had craving the first few weeks, but it wasn't a big deal. I have a theory. I think, that in part, the rehab industry, and the beverage industry, are more profitable, if you could convince the public that it is an addiction, and you are powerless to over come it. They want you to think that you must drink. Rehab success rates at 5 years: near zero. Back in you go, more money and profits. ROund and round you go. A self sustaining industry. Just a theory.
Have you heard of tribe sober. I am a member nearly a year dry. Its so helpful having an online tribe to chat to at different stages of sobriety. Best of luck.
@@wellinever1558 Hey don't mind me. It's just a theory. If that works for you great. My problems weren't the alcohol itself. It was, but it wasn't. It was much deeper than that. What ever works for you. For me it isn't about luck anymore. Keep it up.
@@wellinever1558 and you'll have to excuse my suspicion. $5 BILLION dollars was stolen by the rehab industry in Arizona alone. $5 BILLION in FRAUD. And they were literly traffiking humans to do it. So my opinions are about the industry, not the poor folks in the system.
68. Was a binge drinker for the most part. ‘Ah, just one more’. I started journaling when I retired and realized that the ‘days after’ drinking were much worse than the few hours of buzz. 6 months is a start. I’ve told all my close friends that I’ve quit. My mood has improved dramatically. Alcohol IS a depressant.
The truest saying for an addiction. 1 is too many and 1000 is never enough! Glad you’ve changed your life around! And those people that leave our lives when we quit doing something that is hurting us anyway, are people we truly never needed around to begin with. But I understand why you mentioned it. It’s very true. It’s sort of, misery loves company. And birds of a feather…. 😂 I’m just full of quotes today!
It's not just advertising, but is also normalised in so many tv shows. I'm in Australia, and it wasn't until I lived with an alcoholic that I realised even our family orientated shows, like Neighbours, normalised drinking and pub drinking. In The Big Bang Theory, they're always drinking, dad's are always drinking beer while "watching the game.." It's everywhere.
Canadian here: I have been sober for 42 years.... Alcohol was my best friend... Always there, comforting, faithful... loyal...there for all occasions... every event... arm around me in loneliness,, my friend in celebrations.... friend in times of pain and suffering... saved me from the bully's... my family... the one who loved me most...... I did not realize my friend's agenda was evil and the more I trusted the deeper the knife went into my back.... Oh to be free of such a toxic relationship...
I stopped drinking alcohol 3.5 years ago. People say it makes you feel fastastic, lying. I don't notice it in my mood, sleep, fitness, etc. I do notice it in my skin. You should stop drinking alcohol to "save yourself for later". It is an investment for a healthier future, and that is worth everything.
@@likhwadube5937 depends on your age if you are young then yea your energy levels will increase after stopping drinking and depends on your diet what do you eat do you exercise daily? are you disciplined in your life i mean eat sleep at the same time this life is what you make it if you have a goal you want to achieve you will find your energy no matter what what ever it takes you will do it
As a youngster I could mix alcohol with physical fitness but as I got older it got harder, 4 years ago I stopped drinking and now at 62 am lifting heavier weights than I was last year and feel a lot better in myself, along with quitting smoking and sweets, it’s the best life decision I’ve made.
I quit alcohol 2 years, 5 months, & 7 days ago. I won’t say I don’t miss it. I do want a beer every now and then, but, on balance, the benefits of remaining sober have outweighed the sacrifices.
you will stop counting days and months WHEN you become really free... is not that relevant if you quit yesterday or 20 or 50 years ago. I have heard same stories from ppl and the PRIDE is to QUIT? sorry i dont think so. Because when you keep saying for 50 years how long ago you stopped... TRUTH IS YOU ARE STILL HOOKED... you are free when it becomes SO IRRELEVANT that you dont even talk about it, you dont need to mention it to absolutely NOBDY. Keep it for yourself and INSTEAD talk about the PRESENT. thats being alive. free.
I'm going to write this comment here @@traceynorcross5666 Iv ordered chicken that will arrive in 1 hour and I just reached home after busy workday, freezing my fav wine in the fridge and iv decided to enjoy this documentary while sipping alcohol 😅 I always felt I'm above being addicted let's see how long that last. 😂 I always believe that it's not the alcohol ITS PEOPLE!
That's one of the things that makes me feel like a stranger in this world: I've never liked alcohol. When I was a teenager I tried several times to keep up with my friends drinking but afterwards I felt really bad. It was around 20 years old that I finally decided: alcohol and I didn't mix, and I never drank again. Today I am 70 years old and I think I made a good choice.
Same. It makes me fly into rages even without being full-on drunk. That, or depressed crying jags. About 1/3rd of the time would be okay... just okay. Far too unpredictable for me, plus the vomiting thing was a big deterrent. Much prefer stimulants & opiates in low doses.
it is genetic! everyone experiences different effects when they drink. A large % of Asian people experience "Asian Flush" which makes their face red and causes a near instant hangover feeling after only a few drinks.
If that's the case then why you watching this for the lack of better word boring documentary 😂. I'm watching this while having a wine in my hands just because I drink responsibly and Im watching this just to keep myself in check 😊
It made college different for sure. All those guys have beer belly’s now and I’m still the same jean size as when I was in college. That was 20 years ago LOL.
I was a functional alcoholic for 20 years. Binge drinking on weekends, blacking out and waking up at random place. Going into work hungover, reeking of alcohol and getting sent home a couple of times. I finally gave it up two years ago, it was difficult at first but now I don't even think about it anymore, it's just a part of me. I feel much healthier now, I have more money, I have more time (no hangovers), I'm more goal oriented, I'm just a much better person. It took me 20 years to realize you can be content with who you are without any highs or lows.
Well done! I am dealing with a functional alcoholic, he told me he could handle it. But he became abusive and next day claims he can't remembered what he said. That shows he can't handle alcohol, his cholesterol is also high his body smells of it.
Fun fact: David Nutt, one of the more foremost experts in the field in the country, was a key government drugs advisor here in the UK. He was commissioned to do a study into the the order of harm caused to society by drugs including alcohol. He ended up placing alcohol one of the highest, above cocaine, MDMA, etc. He was promptly fired from his government position soon afterwards.
Professor Nutt I may add. The government did not like his conclusions, which, to be honest, were accurate. The big alcohol donate a lit of money tk government's to influence their policies.
Drinking for 30 years and damaged my body. Started at 12, Dad was an alcoholic. A very jolly one though until it damaged his health too. I didn't stop until I'd damaged my body. I really wouldn't drop to rock bottom like I did. Seek help. You'll need to change your behaviours as well because they'll be habit forming too. I'm living my best life three years in, I have good medical screening, and a great connection with my kids, I'm a lucky man, it's all for my family and they're all for me. There's always hope x
I stopped drinking because of the impact it was having on my family, kids marriage etc. My wife stopped drinking 7 months later but unfortunately it took me to kick her out and her doing a stint in rehab. She is now 23 months sober, and our marriage, kids, life and everything else could never be better. By far the best tbing ive ever done by a country mile
@@Virtus555 Do you pride yourself on being the problem? Because you are most definitely the problem. You're the toxic one, and you should be ashamed of yourself. But I fully suspect you're not capable of having the self-reflection to realize your toxicity.
Alcohol is no no for us. We are way to busy enjoying nature kayaking. Alcohol isn’t conducive to sunrise kayaking trips. It’s sad to see people would rather waste money At a bar instead of outside enjoying Mother Nature. Imagine how much money you save not drinking and of course the health benefits. If you’re reading this and you’re trying to quit, keep quitting. You can do it!
I think it's sad seeing people wasting money on kayaks, when they could be enjoying a drink in a bar tbh. Even better if a bar with a view overlooking the sea :)
AH! My German Brethren!!! I HAD to quit in 2011 once i realized i wasnt "wired" for moderation. There was never a time to have "just a few" beers or otherwise. It was All-or-Nothing, but thats OK because i learned a very important thing about myself & accepted it. The other option would've been drinking and not waking up one day. CHEERS to those who can enjoy it!!! I had my fun!
I’m right with you buddy! Having one or Two just seemed counter productive to me, if I’m drinking I’m getting destroyed 😅😅 but 4 years clean now! I’m the only one of my friends who stopped but I enjoy being around the drinking vibe I feed off the energy without the hangover! All the best to you 🙏🙏
I never drank because I am a Muslim, but whenever I would go out with friends in the past who did drink, I always was so happy I did not drink. I would watch them falling apart during the night, vomiting, crying, talking non stop nonsense, fighting, falling and the next day they would feel like crap and still vomiting. I would always help them or even try to persuade them to take it easy. But I never understood why anyone would disgrace themselves like that. Watching them, was only a big confirmation for me that drinking is just self harming. Also when going on holidays with friends, they were not able to wake up early due to the hangover to do some sight seeing. There is no better feeling than waking up early, fit and rested for the day, and why anyone would exchange that for a hangover is beyond me. Last but not least, I have worked at multiple international companies where we had drinks each Friday afternoon or on special occasions. I did not drink, but other colleagues did. I went like a couple of times and after that I decided I would never attend these drinks again. After a few drinks you see people change and getting rude and obnoxious. Now wherever I work, I make it clear in advance that I do not attend any drinking occasions or a night out , period. I just want to stay away from these "social " events where people drink.
The states will have more work to do if they declare Alcohol a drug and individuals and society will have to develop real responsible attitude towards life and its problems. Since, Alcohol has served states so well over hundreds of years, the larger society and the state would not like to take the ‘extra load’ on them. Which actually is not, if you see what alcohol does to the society and individuals. At the end of very long history of man, alcohol (drugs) is multibillion dollar trade. Even then the sane people and society like in Ice Land is a ray of hope, those with hope can still win when the odds are hugely against them.
I gave up alcohol 3 years ago, because for me I drank to get drunk everytime, it was never just a tipple. One too many regretful situations later, bad decisions and hanging out with the wrong people, i just got tired of it. I do feel boring now because alcohol is in my country a thing sociable people do, so now I'm more of a homebody. I don't feel great for not drinking, I feel more isolated but i know its better for my mental, emotional & physical health.
Try to think of what you would of occupied yourself with if you never drank. What would your sociable thing have been without alcohol......Sports.....Music....Acting?....Be adventurous and step out a bit. Xx
Psychedelics are just an exceptional mental health breakthrough. It's quite fascinating how effective they are against depression and anxiety. Saved my life.
@@nidhint.v1697 Totally incorrect. Only people with a predisposition to mental health issues (eg; borderline personality disorders or undiagnosed genetic abnormalities) are those likely to experience psychosis of some kind, and hallucinations are exactly what those agents do and is the reason people take them. There has been much recent interest in using psychotropic agents (L.S.D., MDMA, Psilocybin) at low doses to allow people with mental disorders to "open the door" and allow different forms of treatment, some people find for example that migraines can be stopped by taking magic mushrooms once a month, or psychiatrist's can help patient's explore deep emotional trauma's with a view to understanding and thus resolving them with the heightened state of self introspection that agents like MDMA and LSD can provide. But like any drug if you abuse it, you are of course asking for trouble, there is a right way and a wrong way, just like everything else in life.
I’ve always lived with a ‘been there, done that’ outlook towards life. Having had a fair share of drunken exciting times followed by terrible hangovers, I will no longer need a drink again for the rest of my life.
May God bless you and help you stay sober. Our daughter died of alcoholism, at a young age. Very painful for those left behind, including her children.

Just closing in on 12 months alcohol free. It’s bad stuff. I just woke up one morning and said enough is enough. Watch that hubberman pod cast….. proper eye opener
The fact that alcohol can still be heavily advertised with very little health warnings is mind boggling. It just shows the bias people have when it comes to alcohol, especially those people that make the laws and regulations, not to mention alcohol lobbying groups.
I'm 27, been drinking for 8 yrs....on and off, but since last 2 yrs been drinking almost daily....once a month had blackouts....got into fights frequently, one day i drank a lot and passed out, got into a fight and was outnumbered ...felt really shameful and lost res0ect for myself. Since that day haven't touched alcohol or cigerettes... 2 months sober now....not going back...feel lot better now...going to gym regularly, my productivity at work has gone up, better sleep and enjoying my sports and guitar playing....No need for any drugs....❤
Good for you. I didnt stop till i was mid 40's. Feel like i missed a lot of good living. You make a good decision. I also placed my new found energy and time into cricketing and more guitar. Im much better at remembering what i learned now.
7 years sober 04/18/24....2 strokes, couldn't write my own name the last few years because my hands shook so badly. Lost everything. Drugs? Never got to me like alcohol. There's never been anything else that, when I quit (because of being arrested and physically forced to be separated from it), sent me into a 12 day coma.
I hope you doing well, some days I can't write my name too😢,I have been trying to quit but I always go back 😢.I will give a try again,I will do it for my kids and my soul.
I'm surprised this doc didn't touch more on the devastating effects of alcohol withdrawal. Benzo's are about the only drug that will kill you if you try to quit cold turkey after years of addiction.
I stopped seven years ago after many, many years of drinking every day. I just reached a point where I felt so ashamed of myself that I quit over night with virtually very few withdrawal symptoms. I never drank during the day at work or anything like that. Your mind is super strong if you really want to do something.
RIght on. Congrats and keep 'er rolling right. And you are correct. It's a basic fact. It's ethanol. Or sometimes if you are really unlucky, methanol. Both are poisonous, one will kill you quickly. The other kills you very slowly. Incidious. All to make money off of drinkers. Genius. A self marketing product that consumers cannot resist. Profit perfected.
Psychedelics saved me from years of uncontrollable depression, anxiety, smoking, and illicit pills addiction. Imagine carving heavy chains for over a decade and then all of a sudden that burden is gone. Believe it or not, in a couple of years they'll be all over for treatment of mental health related issues.
To be honest, mushrooms are one of the most amazing things on the planet and it is natural, they serve in many ways not only for mental related issues.
I wish they were readily available in my place. Microdosing was my next plan of care for my husband. He's 59 & has many mental health issues plus probably CTE & a TBI that left him in a coma 8 days. It's too late now I had to get a TPO as he's 6'6 300+ pound homicidal maniac. He's constantly talking about killing someone. He's violent. Anyone reading this Familiar w/ BPD knows if it is common for an obsession with violence.
On average deaths from crack cocaine annually have been about 5,000 although they did peak at about 20,000 in 2021. In comparison, the annual deaths from alcohol are at 175,000 and that's not including other conditions and specific accidents that involve alcohol. And if you done any research you would see that the number of deaths related to alcohol is higher than that of opioids and other drugs. A Reuters study in 2010 determined that alcohol was three times deadlier than cocaine. Although less pure substances like crack are obviously not in the comparison. However, it is worth noting that for all the judgment that hard drugs diluted with chemicals receive, alcohol is indeed a poison and is used in industrial cleaning and other applications similar to chemical products like draino.
I grew up with an alcoholic father so I NEVER drink alcohol and have only had it a handful of times, couldn’t even finish any of them. I’m 32 and can’t stand alcohol 🍷 so it’s easy for me to decline it & I’m very grateful to be that way.
@@spicyroads I guess you could say my “drug” is caffeine, I drink pre-workout everyday before the gym. Other than that, no. I’m extremely square and bland.
I moved to Japan when I was 19. We can say that almost any form of socializing involves alcohol. It’s everywhere, available 24/7, used in business meetings, with friends, social gatherings, you name it. Before moving to Japan, I had never drunk alcohol at all, not even a single drop. When I was 21, I was given an alcoholic drink without even knowing it was alcohol; it was like lemon soda, but with booze in it. Until then, I had been completely against alcohol consumption, but that drink didn’t hurt. I began drinking more often. When I was 26, my alcohol consumption was off the charts, but my life was unaffected. I never blacked out, had no loss of memory, and never did anything stupid. I kept drinking more. Into my 30s, I drank even more than I used to, yet no problems at all: no hangovers and brilliant performance at work. I was drinking 5 or more liters of a 9% alcohol beverage in a single night, even more. Still nothing, no bad experiences. I used it to mask my shyness and my ADHD symptoms. Yet, I kept drinking. On January 20th, 2023, I woke up one morning and gave it a thought: “There must be something wrong with me after more than 20 years of drinking, 10 of them heavily. Because there’s nothing wrong with me, and there should be something wrong; it just can’t be possible.” So from that morning, I decided I was not going to drink anymore. I quit cold turkey. I have not had cravings; I didn’t feel the need to grab a drink. That was it. Has my life improved? Probably yes, considering that my body doesn’t have to deal with that stuff anymore. One thing I noticed: when I’m walking on the streets and see people drinking and walking while holding a can of booze, I have this odd feeling. Was I like that but failed to notice? Did I use to talk and sound as stupid as they do? That I will never know. What I do know is that unlike me, there are people who are trying very hard to overcome an alcohol addiction because it is ruining their lives, and they have probably lost most of the things that matter to them. And here, in Japan, you cannot step out of your house without seeing alcohol in every corner, signs everywhere, TV ads, ads in train stations, and convenience stores full of all kinds of booze one can even imagine. And their friends, whose social life still pivots around alcohol. And that, at least, should be eradicated. It’s like trying to quit heroin in a place where, wherever you look, whoever you look at, it will be there. And your friends and peers will encourage you to get another shot of dope. Yet, nobody really seems to care since alcohol is not a problem. Or is it?
God bless you Mate.👊🇮🇪 I'm an Aussie with Irish blood to boot. LoL. Time to say goodbye for me too. It absolutely zaps your passion for everything else.🙏
God invented Irish-whiskey so Irish couldn't rule the world. What I know of them, my mother being of the O'Brien klax, it was a very wise choice by God😮
I miss drinking, getting arrested, missing work without pay, saying the wrong things to hurt people's feelings, the headaches and withdrawals, squandering my rent money, scaring my children, and disappointing my parents.
I just turned 68. I’ve been drinking for 45 years. I quit drinking on Labor Day weekend. The first week was the roughest with the shakes and now I’m over it.
I actually respect the guy who makes his own wine at home and has a glass around meals. This is just a way of life goes back generations in Europe. But bar hopping with fake friends just to have a social life is a no no..

Red wine is excellent for the arteries. lots of other benefits from wines or other liquors and liquers. some are made with herbs and are very medicinal. But only drinking a limited amount is what's needed for it to benefit. alcohol is mainly a medicine. Don't overdose !
My family GP, the old timers at AA, and just the elders in our communities that have never been hooked on the hooch all say the same, it's not a matter of if, but when it's going to kill you.
I haven’t given up on alcohol yet but I feel that after 3 years of trying to reduce my drinking, I have finally succeeded. I don’t really care about a number of days without alcohol all I care about is having control of it. I don’t embarrass myself in front of others or my family anymore, I can choose to drink or not when going out or on vacation, and I can finally understand that I don’t feel better while drunk.
Same! I only drinks socially which is maybe once every 2-3 months and it involves a couple of glasses of wine to enjoy with a meal but not to get wasted. I used to drink more when I was younger, now I am 37 I would hate to waste my time dealing with hangovers and also I focus on becoming fit and exercising instead and that doesn’t mix with alcohol. Drinking used to be more fun in my 20s but now I find it a waste of time.
I got pulled into drinking after being VERY AGAINST it. It completely destroyed my life. I take full responsibility, it's my fault. Then again the extreme dangers of drinking are rarely even talked about. I'm 33 now and basically have dementia or signs of Wet brain. I cannot function or remember anything for the most part. my motor skills are deteriorating. I ripped my stomach lining to the point that i'm done drinking and years later it still aches me every second of the day. Drinking rots your body and mind. I drank $2 vodkas, malt liquor, straight GARBAGE day and night to the point i had multiple alcohol withdraw seizures. It was more than addiction and just living in fear of seizures and insane withdraw. I don't even know why I thought getting blackout drunk was "fun" or I needed to do it. I'll be gone soon and I have a young daughter and the pain, regret and darkness is beyond troubling.
I hope you will live the rest of your life in comfort and love. Please don't think less if yourself. It can and does happen to anybody. It happened to me too. 💝🫂
I haven’t had a drink in 15 years. Sometimes when I’m walking past an open air restaurant and I see people laughing and drinking and seemingly having a good time I miss it for a brief moment. But it passes pretty quickly.😊
Alcohol is the biggest gateway drug by far...and why is it permitted as opposed to other drugs like marijuana, cocaine or heroin...all of which were as legal as alcohol in history? Because its about who controls the supply. Western govts can control alcohol supplies...they cant do the same with other drugs. Now the US has realised it can control marijuana you can see it become legalised as well. The differentiation between alcohol, tobacco and other drugs is a state controlled con.
@@trippycloud87.This is so true!!!!! Most cocaine addicts drink alcohol when they do coke. Take away alcohol and most people can get sober from cocaine.
As in most decisions about public health, the rules are made by giant corporations who own the politicians. The Scandinavian countries appear to be the only countries that care about their citizens more than the greed of corporations.
Would you happen to have an example? Because Carlsberg (a Danish company) didn't seem to be stopped in any way by their government. Also, Spain and the Netherlands have the lowest alcoholism rate in Europe at 1.5%, compared to Sweden at 11% and Iceland at 6%.
I suspect many admire non drinkers for their ability to say “no” to drink. I didn’t want to say “no” but I did admire those who did. Stay strong. :). Remember : Alcohol is a lier and a thief.
I am Nigerian and I'm aghast at the alcohol epidemic in Nigeria. It really is an epidemic and the sachetization has made it very accessible to both the young and the old. The Government has tried several times to implement policies that would reduce the epidemic, but one way or the other, implementation just goes into thin air. Alcohol is one of the major contributor to the violence of the popular agberos (touts and hooligans) in Lagos especially. I wish something permanent can be done to help stop or at least reduce the impact of this drug in my country
Same here in Kenya. I'm 28 and I have been suffering from binge drinking the last 10ish years. It's such an epidemic here in Nairobi- especially for young adults. Something must be done. We must do something.
Agree, but we can also say the same for McDonald’s and KFC as slow poison. We as humans indulge on alot of poison, cannabis and energy drinks being the latest trend.
If it weren't a drug, it'd be like drinking orange juice. Lol but booze isn't like that, it's a drug lol, sold at stores, restaurants, concert venues etc. Pretty much everywhere unless the country you're in has alcohol illegal as a substance to sell.
I started drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes at 14, and first got really drunk at 17. I still drink at 71, very moderately. Two friends died from alcohol related diseases in those 54 years. I started smoking cannabis aged 18. It made me lazy, paranoid, and unfocused, but I couldn't stop until I was 46. Eight friends went insane and died in their 20s and 30s as a result of cannabis use and other recreational drugs. One of them murdered his own mother. A 9th died at 65 after about 40 years of insanity, unemployment, and mental hospitals. He took no other drug but cannabis. Maybe the reason alcohol is not readily classified as a drug is the lack of correlation to insanity. It seems that society has more tolerance for car crashes than for madness. (BTW, driving under the influence of drugs is at least just as dangerous as drunk driving.)
Great documentary. Lot's of good points. I had to stop at age 24 1/2 for the same reasons the girl with the wool hat was describing. I'm 60 now, retiring public school teacher in Texas. I'm not against alcohol at all and lots of people seem to have fun hanging out and drinking responsibly. Good for them. I could rarely do that...I'd always want more and then make an ass out of myself or get behind the wheel of a car and put others at danger or go off someplace to drink more. I finally got that the problem was not the alcohol it was my thinking. Once I got help with that then I understood that alcohol was not my friend and couldn't use it anymore if I wanted to be successful in life. I'm 100% certain I've not missed out on anything by not drinking rather my life has been enriched in so many ways by never picking up again.
Excellent documentary 👏 As a person in harm-reduction & long-term recovery, I appreciate gaining the new perspective of having a "favourite receptor" and finding ways to stimulate it. I'm rather gobsmacked that in Canada, despite the variety of different recovery treatments I've participated in, this concept was never conveyed. I'm going to try it. Thank you so much! ❤
harm reduction is way better for chronic relapsers. I think people expect all or nothing with these kinds of problems and cant see the nuance in recovery
Stopped about six months ago and never looked back. I love it being sober and able to enjoy life without a drink. I sleep good and my recovery time after working out is quick, plus no more issues with my joints. Drinking left me bloated and all my gains at the gym would go to waste after a night out drinking.
What an incredible, compassionate exploration of alcohol. Thank you for making this available for free. My parents didn't drink (apart from very special occasions when they would have 1 or 2 at Christmas or one of their birthdays), so I grew up without it in my environment, but still I drank heavily for several years once I turned 17. I passed through that phase and now drink very little but still occasionally binge. I feel very lucky that I didn't have a family that normalised heavy alcohol use, so I've always been aware of the way we treat alcohol compared to other, less harmful substances. Fascinating idea teaching children the chemistry of emotion at an early age and giving them tools to manage their emotions before alcohol becomes default.
I gave up alcohol completely at age 30 i started to have issues with mood anxiety and general health. Im 49 now i still have anxiety to a point at times giving up hasn't cured me but it would be far worse if i had continued.
So my in-laws get mad at me when I don't order a drink anymore. They don't like that I don't drink with them, even just at dinner. I don't understand it. What difference does it make what I choose to injest into MY body?? I couldn't care less if they drink or not. Why do they care so much?? I don't get it.
I think people know it’s bad for them, and they might be slightly embarrassed doing it in front of someone who chooses not to. If they can convince you to have a drink, they feel better about their own destructive behavior. People that smoke meth don’t do it in front of people who don’t, they smoke it with other meth heads.
I’m 34 and have been a social drinker throughout my 20’s and now up til my mid 30’s. I never considered myself the type that loses control but as with most drinkers, I admit I have embarrassed myself on a couple of occasions and way more than I would’ve liked to. My dad passed away in September of 2022 from cirrosis. He was indeed dependent on alcohol and could be considered a “functioning alcoholic” as he never called in sick over a hangover, got a DUI or caused anyone any real harm, except for himself of course. I am from Mexico and drinking is very imprinted into our culture. We drink for every occasion and if there isn’t one, then we drink to make things happen. I have been flirting with the idea of quitting cold turkey but always find myself lost in thoughts of FOMO. What happens when I go to the UK and finally visit a Premier League match? Will I miss out on the pub crawl with my fellow United supporters? But what about when my fiancé and I are married and want to go wine tasting in Italy? What about gatherings with friends? And Christmas/New Years? Etc etc etc I’ve never considered myself an alcoholic but the thought of drinking the way my dad did in his last decade of life terrify me. If anyone has any advice or words of encouragement for me to help with quitting cold turkey. I would highly appreciate it. Thank you kind strangers.
Don't quit cold turkey start to drink one or 2 glasses of deep red sweet wine with dinner, then start to skip days no drink di it very slowly and next thing you know your on top I use manishevits sweet concord grape kosher wine

Hmmm look what happened to the tobacco and prescription opioid industries. I don’t know how the alcohol industry remains so untouchable. At the very least, it should be required to open, maintain and service free rehab centers for people who inevitably end up as “alcoholics.” Makes me SO mad.
It’s hard to stop bec as we are little we are taught consciously and subconsciously that the only way to have fun is through alcohol. This is why when one tries to stop boredom floods your thoughts. It’s a matter of finding ways to be social in a healthy matter

At a 63 yr old woman that has been drinking since i was like 13. It was just in the last 2 years that i was indulging alot more, i blame it in the passing of my closest brother, depression set in big time. Drinking started every morning around 7:30 am ,i would go get me two of the biggest cheapest strongest beer and drink till i fell asleep. I'm tired,im over it. Im working on my second day, its hard , its like i lost my best friend

i quit all occasional social alcohol back in 2010. People ask me, really you do not drink even a beer or a glass of wine? No, i never drink any alcohol now because I do not see any benefit to it. With this, quite few friendships vanished which i do not miss. Obviously I rarely visit places where alcohol is consumed because it is just not part of my life any longer. I no longer visit bars, restaurants, birthday parties, pubs, new year eves, etc etc etc i do not buy alcohol, i do not gift it. You can not imagine how much freedom & lightness quitting this one habit has brought into my life. Of course this does not make me a hater of people who do like it or consume it. Not at all, because my choice is not about other people, it is about me to favor my own health & journey, an alcohol-free life! This has had quite a positive impact on my relatives they just consume less of it when i am around without me telling them anything at all. Actually my Dad & Mom quit completely, to which i was very surprised. Even when i used to go to parties decades back & events for work purpose, i used to order fresh juice or milk. This was a shock for most people, well again, it was never about others, it was always about me. I am now 46, many of my peers are aging, as they say, they see me rejuvenating. I am vegetarian, do yoga & meditation, kettlebells, outdoor time, it works really well for me 🙂 Life is already heavy so i really like habits which make it lighter LOL. I am sure this habit will travel with me next lifetimes too, i like another thing is that the money i save i can invest it in other things. So for me, travels to cities is not interesting because it is all about food & drink, visiting sites. I only travel to Nature or ancient cultures. Urban tourism has nothing interesting for me to offer really, after having explored so much of it LOL

I stopped drinking when I was barely out of my 20s. No regrets whatsoever. Life is hard enough without the extra pressure of having to deal with the down side of drinking.
I have been drinking for the past 10 years, I feel great! less stress, low depression, no suicidal thoughts, good mood most of the time, enjoying my sleep, more friendlier, less angry reaction, no fights with my spouse

Advertising alcohol should be illegal, just like cigarettes. The social damage alcohol causes dwarves every other drug combined.
It's not just advertising, but is also normalised in so many tv shows. I'm in Australia, and it wasn't until I lived with an alcoholic that I realised even our family orientated shows, like Neighbours, normalised drinking and pub drinking. In The Big Bang Theory, they're always drinking, dad's are always drinking beer while "watching the game.."

Is this my friend pig ...
I worked in a bar for a year after high school. Completely cured me of wanting to drink.
I worked for a year as a waitress at a bar in college and quit drinking. When you are sober and around drunk people you realize how bad alcohol is.
The states will have more work to do if they declare Alcohol a drug and individuals and society will have to develop real responsible attitude towards life and its problems. Since, Alcohol has served states so well over hundreds of years,
the larger society and the state would not like to take the ‘extra load’ on them. Which actually is not, if you see what alcohol does to the society and individuals. At the end of very long history of man, alcohol (drugs) is multibillion dollar trade. Even then the sane people and society like in Ice Land is a ray of hope, those with hope can still win when the odds are hugely against them.

Psychedelics make your mental illness worse by inducing Psychotic episodes and hallucinations.
What if you partook in massive trip fests in your very early teens?
@@nidhint.v1697Where did you get your degree and do your research?

Do you like any other drugs like caffeine weed or pills ?
@@spicyroads I guess you could say my “drug” is caffeine, I drink pre-workout everyday before the gym. Other than that, no. I’m extremely square and bland.
Get a drug you life addict... I meant, meow
Or is it?
Alcohol killed my spirit...The irish in me knew it was time to put the plug on the jug..Goodbye old friend
God bless you Mate.👊🇮🇪 I'm an Aussie with Irish blood to boot. LoL. Time to say goodbye for me too. It absolutely zaps your passion for everything else.🙏

I actually respect the guy who makes his own wine at home and has a glass around meals. This is just a way of life goes back generations in Europe. But bar hopping with fake friends just to have a social life is a no no..
For sure, a glass of high quality wine with a meal is fine. Getting hammered just for fun is not so fine.

Red wine is excellent for the arteries. lots of other benefits from wines or other liquors and liquers. some are made with herbs and are very medicinal. But only drinking a limited amount is what's needed for it to benefit. alcohol is mainly a medicine. Don't overdose !
Agreed. Going out is not fun after 30. Sitting home relax with glas of wine is fantastic.
I quit drinking after 20 years of boozing. Needless to say I feel better. It’s hard to find a story of someone quitting alcohol and regretting it.

Havent had a sip in 5 years. One of the best decisions ive ever made. My friend drown in a hot tub last September while drunk.
My life without alcohol is far better... sobriety is still a novelty years after giving up alcohol.
Lost my brother to alcohol related illness last year… it truly is a scourge on humanity!
I lost mine also. He quit for ten years one time.
Living in Britain makes people drink
Same for russia and eastern europe. Somehow no heavy drinkers where wheather is good.
And smoke.
Its always your choice brother.
Three years sober. Never like alcohol, only drank it socially.
I transfer all that energy to fit living, while I’ll do it alone, its feel amazing
Shoutout to all my sober people! Catch a runner's high, lose the booze
Its never too late . You can still get out of it . Please at least try . 🙂

It definitely is. I would never of developed a cocaine addiction if it wasn't for alcohol!
In the u.s., the government is most def for corporations instead of citizens
Absolutely true.
Would you happen to have an example? Because Carlsberg (a Danish company) didn't seem to be stopped in any way by their government. Also, Spain and the Netherlands have the lowest alcoholism rate in Europe at 1.5%, compared to Sweden at 11% and Iceland at 6%.
Once you give it up and see how sad it actually is and how everyone act the same. You can't go back. It's the biggest hearder of the masses.
I did “Dry January “ and now have quit. Don’t miss it.
What annoys me is the pressure from drinkers in a social setting when one doesn't drink alcohol. Stand strong!
I was an alcoholic for 35 years and then 16 years ago I joined a 12 step program and for the Grace of God I have not an urge to drink again.
I had my last drink of alcohol in 1981. I don' t miss it. It got me into too much trouble in the past.
people often call it a drug, but they get yelled down if they do. It is only not considered a drug because people make a ton of money off poison.
Agree, but we can also say the same for McDonald’s and KFC as slow poison. We as humans indulge on alot of poison, cannabis and energy drinks being the latest trend.
Coffee out of nowhere!
It is most definitely a drug.
@@user-ye6ty9ie8gbut it doesn’t really change your mood like alcohol
Don't understand
Interestingly since I started taking GABA as a supplement, I have had very little desire to drink much.
If you want to stop your anxiety with out medication, start meditating..It completely stopped my anxiety..
Oh, yeah....me too. The panic attacks and anxiety for days after drinking got to be unbearable for me. Don't miss it.
It's just not being suppressed by alcohol anymore.
Try cutting out sugars and carbohydrates, it may stop the anxiety.
It's a common response. People seem to take it as a negative if they have no desire to stop.

Alcohol is a poison , the worst drug. All drugs should be legal, it is a health issue not a criminal one.
Hmmm look what happened to the tobacco and prescription opioid industries. I don’t know how the alcohol industry remains so untouchable. At the very least, it should be required to open, maintain and service free rehab centers for people who inevitably end up as “alcoholics.” Makes me SO mad.

i quit all occasional social alcohol back in 2010.
