- From zero tolerance to decriminalisation, Thailand’s recent u-turn on its cannabis laws is lighting up a billion-dollar industry. Officially it’s for medicinal use but the legal grey area means ‘ganja’ lovers are celebrating. Subscribe: ab.co/3yqPOZ5
It’s the country which gave us the words ‘bong’ and ‘ganja’.
In Thailand, cannabis has been used for centuries in traditional medicine.
But when the US launched its ‘war on drugs’ in the 1970s, Thailand became a key partner, placing cannabis on the narcotics list and toughening penalties against it.
This June, the country took it off that list, meaning cannabis sellers and recreational users no longer risked jail for selling or possessing cannabis.
In tourist hotspots, a ‘ganja-culture’ is fast taking hold. In Bangkok’s Khao San Road nightspot, it seems easier to buy a joint than a Pad Thai.
‘Now it’s legal - God gave a gift for us’, says Choco Gonzales, a cannabis seller in Bangkok.
And it’s party time for tourists at the famous full moon party at Koh Phangan in the country’s southeast.
‘Wherever you go now, it’s Amsterdam again in Asia’, says an Italian tourist at the party.
As Australia reignites on its own debate about legalising cannabis, Southeast Asia correspondent Mazoe Ford travels around Thailand to meet the new crop of ‘ganja-preneurs’ cashing in on the green rush.
In Bangkok, Kitty Chopaka, a shop owner selling cannabis products and a leading advocate of decriminalisation, is still pinching herself.
‘I never thought in my lifetime that this would actually happen…But at the same time I knew it has to be done.’
In the southern island of Samui, resort owner Carl Lamb reckons the liberalisation of the laws is attracting overseas tourists.
‘You can really feel it's reinvigorated the market. There's a new energy here.’
Ford also hitches a ride on the private jet of the politician behind the policy - Deputy Prime Minister and Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.
He takes us to Thailand’s east to spruik the medicinal cannabis industry which the government hopes will become a billion-dollar industry.
‘It turned out that majority of my voters chose to vote for my party… some people even called my party (the) “Cannabis Party”’, he tells Ford.
But not everyone welcomes the change. More than a thousand doctors have warned that the drug was delisted before proper safeguards and regulations were in place.
‘We don't want to be the cannabis haven of the world’, say Doctor Chanchai Sittipunt from Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Medicine.
But Kitty Chopaka says going back isn’t possible - the genie is out of the bottle.
‘That bottle is broken. It’s gone!’

As an Australian who lives in the kingdom and previously lived in Canada and witnessed both countries legalize weed, it really is no big deal. Australia needs to lift itself out of the dark ages
I lived in Canada back in 2011, it wasn't a big deal back then. The Australian government truly have their heads in the sand.

I'm an Australian that has gone to court twice for marijuana use, once in the 80's and another in the 90's for personal use cultivation.
These are the only 2 crimes I've ever committed, but I now have a criminal record. While I was in court another person had a court case charged with assault,
he punched someone in the face 3 times, the victim had to go to hospital, but he got a good behavior bond ,
which means after a certain period it comes off your criminal record. I got a criminal record (a conviction) and had to pay a large fine for growing 3 plants in my backyard.
My neighbors had got robbed and the police just happened to look over their fence when they were investigating the robbery and saw my plants.
BTW there were several court cases that day just for marijuana use or possession. It's such a waste of the legal system resources.
facts mate wastes so much time that's why court always gets delayed at least 2 months
Bad luck.
Yup. Totally ruins lives. I have too many to even count in the states, probably like 5 or 6 at least, weed charges, simpe possession of like less than 1/8th. I was never arrested for it but now you can buy it legally and I'm still a criminal because of the federal aspect. And it all happened in my 20s when they should have just dropped them.

I’m in Thailand right now and it’s life per usual. The critics of weed legalisation will tell you that a society changes (for the worse) after legalising the green. This is the 5th time I’ve visited TH since 2013 and I can happily say it’s the same as I remember…. I’m from NZ and getting weed there involves dealing with gang members- scary stuff … (yep, yep,

People said the same bs about Canada before it became federally legal here in 2018 and after it became federally legal and four years now , life is the same and society didn’t go crazy or whatever .

I've been living in Thailand for a long time and I think this is a good idea. Nobody should be locked up for smoking marijuana, it's not 100% harmless but it stacks up far better than any other, including the legal ones. Also growing cannabis isn’t like growing corn or wheat. You have to really micromanage the process. Always check the plants for signs of stress. Make sure the water you’re giving it is ph appropriate. And the soil has to have enough nutrients to last the grow (especially outside where there are more variables vs inside where you make sure you get a good soil and put the nutrients in the water you’re feeding it). Investing in greenhouse infrastructure may be the way to help farmers switch from one crop to this one.

Who remembers Thai sticks? They were abundant where I lived in the ‘70s. The best time to be a kid. Woohoo😊
Was looking for this
@@Doxsein I was in Thailand in the 70's, too, courtesy of the Air Force. The weed was absolutely the best I've ever had to this day. And it was readily available. Thai cab drivers would hook us up, including selling it on base in front of my barracks. I would still know the taste or smell after all this time. If you're a dedicated smoker, Thai is what you've been looking for.
i've never seen any in the U.S..
Loved the Budda Thai from the '80s in NorCal. Awesome sticks!

Yes because a profit driven world is what we need
@@Mizernyi FACTS.
@@Mizernyi It can’t be that hard to read the sentence. def not what they said bub
What creates the major profits in the firstplace is criminalization and control of the substance that drives up need and demand for the symbiotic plant. Once you allow it in free market they cannot drive up and create value any longer. So yes, decriminalization is the way if you do not want a profit driven society. The alternatives to this are far worse and more expensive.
The suppression of the truth by our elected leaders in the form of LIES disguised as scientific FACT simply to justify their gruesome, privatized and industrialized PRISON SYSTEM is what has done MORE DAMAGE to SOCIETY than anything else 💯
so jelly you, guys much love
We used to get some dang good weed from Thailand back in the seventies. a couple of the best local strains were grown from thai seeds back then. Id sure like to get ahold of some of them seeds

thanks for creating this, you have provided a 360-degree view of the reactions of people over this legalization. Kudos to the team for putting in such efforts.
In the uk we have some high grade for medical use, like coffeeshop grade :) I have a bad back so im allowed to buy it .rock on 2023
I worked with a guy in the earlt 90s that got a coffe can full of weed from a buddy in Thailand every Christmas. It was strong.
The barely veiled hysterical tone of this report is hilarious to me. As an American who has been living with legal cannabis for nearly a decade it’s not a big deal. What’s crazy to me is the way Australia behaves towards marijuana in 2022.
Australian law, not Australians. I've never had issues getting pot and don't know of anyone that every got in trouble so who cares if its legal or not.
@@cim888 - well if you don’t personally know anyone, then it must be true because the world revolves around you!
@@cim888 You need help. Seek help before it is too late.
Australia is a nanny state and this program is tailored towards the average Ozzie
Australia presents as a progressive country, but it is quite conservative and veryyy over regulated and over governed, and the pot situation here illustrates this point perfectly. i live there and it sucks!
I hate when people who’ve never tried it act like experts and condemn it. You have no idea what something is like if you never try it and have no right to judge it or people who enjoy it. It’s an irritating mindset. It has some negatives like any substance such as coffee but alcohol is way worse.
Agreed
Not way worse....way way WAY worse
I rather smoke a joint than drink whiskey

Overtime, smoking too much weed will be very dameging for your brain. But yes, alcohol is way worse.
Every person should be able to grow this plant at least once in thier lifetime
We have Cannabis stores in every plaza in my city in Canada.
At least 5 within walking distance from my house.
Kudos to the makers of this Video to show the In Depth situation of Thailand 🇹🇭
I am Australian, I had a friend who had University degrees and studied so hard to get them, they had been working in their career choice for years earning great money and one day on a day off decided to smoke weed, they were pulled over, drug tested, charged and then lost their job for having a criminal record. They felt so disgraced that they ended up committing suicide because of one joint ruining everything they had worked for.
Rules here are way to strict ruining people's lives, on one hand it would be good to see the rules changed but on the other hand I will be angry because It'd be to late to save a friend.
I have smoked weed once, didn't really like the effect personally but I can see the benefits it has on people. I am 34 yo and have never understood why it's illegal, if it's because it's hard to regulate/hard for governments to make money/tax from it then okay but if it's because it's "dangerous" then why is smoking cigarettes not illegal considering it kills more people and is also just a plant.
Damn that sucks... I'm myself quite a big user and it's annoying that I can't get strains that would be best suited for me and my needs at the time. Only availabe strains here are mostly indicas that puts you on the coach and you don't feel like doing anything because it's much easier to grow those type of strains for a regular dealer. I can't wait for the day when weed is legalized here in Finland, so I can get a better sense of the spectrum and find the strains that might possibly increase my prodictivity.
It's honestly shocking that Australia has yet to get with the program. I grew up in California and weed was always around and available when I was young, then in 1992 (I think) a permissive medial law was passed which allowed basically anyone to get a medical card and purchase it legally. Then came full recreational legalization. Through all of that nothing negative has happened at all, criminalization is literally just the government pointlessly enforcing their power and punishing innocent people. Your friend was a victim of the state and the infuriating thing is that it was so, so unnecessary. Just let people live ffs
@@successor8255 amnesia
Not sure about Australia, but in the United States it's illegal basically because the government can't tax it as easily as tobacco. Another reason for being illegal is racial reasons... marijuana became federally illegal in 1937 even after scientists claimed marijuana is not dangerous.
@MegaAussieFTW "basically" the story of cannabis restraintment isn't that new or old. Generally laid down by the U.S, also due note that all the different subjects of cannabis Sativa/Indica/Ruderalis have all differnt effect on people.
5:25 What a complete legend, wish more countries had government officials like this

Psilocybin containing mushrooms saved my life. The drastically reduced my benzodiazepine withdrawal allowing me to quite illicit pill addiction after three years of heavy daily use before it would had became medically dangerous to quit. It has also helped me survive depression.
Magic mushrooms aren't for everyone. I tried them once and dont feel the need to use them again. To me it's a one time trip whereas with Cannabis, the highs can vary.
Thailand never stops to amaze me. And i also know where I'm going to spend my next holiday. Living in France surrounded by raging alcocholics i really need a break.
Ive heard that about France. Tons of alcoholics and it leads to a ton of problems. I live in the US and i find the bars are where all the problems arise and we need to get outa the darkages with weed.
Alcholism is still rampant and acceptable here in Midwest USA . LUckily my state legalized a very lenient medical and recreational on the ballot in November
Isn't it so laughable various governments stance on marijuana vs. alcohol given the latters' documented negative effects on a greater section of society when compared to the effects of cannabis. When oh when will governments the world over grow up and re evaluate cannabis as a recreational drug..
That's why we're called "Amazing Thailand"😀
