China’s Fat Camps for Kids: Inside the Chinese Child Obesity Crisis | Documentary

  • Child obesity has skyrocketed in China, and authorities are attempting to counter the problem with Prison-like fat camps for kids, run by soldiers.
Victim of a terrible famine in the early 1960s that killed nearly 20 million people, China is now facing a new scourge: obesity. 100 million Chinese people are overweight. The overconsumption of fat and sugar coupled with sedentary lifestyles and the one-child policy have caused rates of obesity to skyrocket.
Although it is a disease particularly prevalent among adolescents, affecting 20% of boys and 10% of girls, even babies are being born at more than six kilos. A phenomenon never before seen in the country’s history.
Expansion and economic growth have changed the lifestyles of Chinese people, who are now consuming more and more Western-style food. Traditional Chinese food, which is generally quite healthy, has been replaced by “junk food” and the portions have doubled or even tripled. Television shows, smartphone applications, doctors and nutritionists are encouraging the entire nation to get into shape.

Lots of Chinese kids I've meet always seems to be positive even if their lives aren't what they want. At an apartment I rented during my first stay in China my neighbor had a 12 year old boy. He would always try to talk to me and learn English. He spoke it quite well although a bit broken. His parents would argue a lot as it was quite loud when they do. He and his sister would go out in the hall way and entertain themselves. Whenever I would ask them if they were okay they would always smile and say. Arguing and talking are the almost the same but only at different volume. 😂 He told me he wanted to be a doctor and last week I saw in his parents social media he graduated from university and on to med school. Makes me sad when I see young kids in America with the world owes me everything attitude

As a chinese kid who went from skinny to fat I can personally say it’s bad. As a kid you are told to eat more than you can store, my personal experience was with my grandma force feeding me until my stomach hurted. You have the attitude that you have to finish everything they get for you, so you can’t even choose how much you want to eat. Moreover, it’s culturally preffered to eat high calorie foods like rice and greasy vegetables. It’s also viewed as cuteness for a kid being fat, with other elders giving compliments, driving the child’s parent to get the kid even fatter. Then when the kids grow up they’re told to magically get a 6 pack and look asthetic. It’s nothing less than bull sh%t.

They summed it up pretty well. This can help fix the issue, but not the root of the issue. They can succesfully learn the value of exercise, discipline and how to take accountability. You can see that even though this is a military style camp, they only want what's best for these children, and that they can actually lose weight in this program. The problem is that they might associate being healthy and active with stressful memories and mental fatigue. Since eating is their outlet, it might even cause them to start binging more.

Jesus doesn’t only reference hell, he describes it in great detail. He says it is a place of eternal torment (Luke 16:23), of unquenchable fire (Mark 9:43), where the worm does not die (Mark 9:48), where people will gnash their teeth in anguish and regret (Matt. 13:42), and from which there is no return, even to warn loved ones (Luke 16:19-31). He calls hell a place of “outer darkness” (Matt. 25:30), comparing it to “Gehenna” (Matt. 10:28), which was a trash dump outside the walls of Jerusalem where rubbish was burned and maggots abounded. Jesus talks about hell more than he talks about heaven, and describes it more vividly. There’s no denying that Jesus knew, believed, and warned about the absolute reality of hell. Jesus can set you free, if you confess with your mouth Jesus is lord and believe God raised Him from the death and you will be saved

fat camp cant help obese kids. It make kids fatter. because sustainable weight loss is not a few points or stages but a lifetime. Losing weight for a while in the slimming camps and then returning to the old way of life only makes fat people fatter and fatter each time. The body will understand that it may be undernourished (when doing a diet in a slimming camp) and will further increase the reserve mechanism to store fat and eat more when food is available. That's why people who lose weight by dieting when they leave the diet will gain excessive weight when they are not on the diet. After many failed diets and regaining weight, obese people will also easily lead to depression, give up and stress will stimulate appetite to relieve sadness and stress. As a result, the patient will fall into a loop: fat => stress => eat => fat => stress ..... To lose weight sustainably, it is necessary to commit to changing the lifestyle forever. That is, never overeat. Don't get too hungry either. Eat at 90% of your body's needs (a little hungry). Find recipes that do have a lot of vegetables and fruits. Limit soft drinks and beer. Find a favorite sport to play. And keep that lifestyle forever.

The exercising should in fact be a fun experience, with people there to support you in your physical struggles. Telling people to not have fun while working out creates repulsion and makes people want to work out less. It's great having people there to cheer you up, so you feel more confident in your abilities and you may keep working out. Making kids hate the experience is the worst effect.

i used to eat a lot as a teen. i wasn’t overweight or anything but i was rounder. i think being forced to finish everything on your plate when someone prepares your plate for you as a kid is definite part of it.
i got older and ate less because of stress but as a result my appetite decreased drastically as well.
i also started eating in plates used for side dishes because i could fill them up without worrying about putting too much food. if i’m still hungry after i finish it, i just go for seconds. i listen to my body.
we need to teach children to listen to their bodies too. no “finish your food, you’re wasting it.” if you as a parent want your child to finish the plate of food you served them, serve them less. clearly they can’t eat as much as you expect. wasting food isn’t good but put measures in place to ensure that it doesn’t happen. if your kid wants more food, they’ll tell you.

My heart broke for that poor boy in the end. I just wanted to hug him. As someone who was raised in a military family, it’s hard for most civilians to understand military culture. These instructors really do have the children’s best interest at heart, but they’re showing their love and wisdom the only way they know how to which is to toughen the kids up military style. Military culture is for adults who have the mental capacity to be toughened up soldiers. Not children who just need love, support, and guidance. And often food is used as an escape from a horrible home life. After the child goes back, they’ll go back to their old lifestyle habits.

@@maloumasereel966 There is limited scientific research specifically on the effectiveness of Chinese weight loss camps, but there is evidence that structured weight loss programs in general can be effective for promoting weight loss and improving overall health.
In a systematic review and meta-analysis published in the International Journal of Obesity in 2015, researchers found that structured weight loss programs, which included both dietary and physical activity interventions, resulted in greater weight loss than self-directed interventions. The review included studies conducted in various countries, including China.
However, it's important to note that the effectiveness of any weight loss program, including those in Chinese weight loss camps, can vary depending on factors such as the individual's motivation, adherence to the program, and overall health status. Additionally, some weight loss camps may use extreme or potentially harmful methods to promote weight loss, so it's important for individuals to carefully research and choose a reputable program with a qualified and experienced staff.
Ultimately, the most effective approach to weight loss and weight management is a combination of healthy eating habits, regular physical activity, and a sustainable lifestyle that can be maintained over the long term.

Wow... This has to be the most ineffective training I have ever seen. These kids are here because they need to fundamentally change their habits; they are not delinquents that need to punished. These camps essentially create a negative enforcement loop that drives them to hate exercise and anything associated with weight loss. They themselves admit that the teens can't keep the pounds they loss off, and without proper changes to normal home life, their health will never improve. The "military" style camp is meant to appeal to the parents that are fundamentally misguided. They think that if a harsh camp works for the GaoKao, a harsh camp should also work for losing weight.

As a Chinese person representing as the Chinese community this is very odd in other countries but in China this is how the older generation were taught to do so they will force us to do the same even with punishment . It’s sometimes hard to say, but this is how it works and this is how it will work. There is no mercy, just strict rules that you have to follow. If u don’t listen you will get punished until you do. Physically and Mentally. Other people would say that rude or mean and unfair but that is how it works and I don’t see any changes happening anytime soon since the new generation will learn from the older generations. Rules are strict and other people will never know the torture the younger generation of China children face. This is how it always was.
I am also a overweight Chinese and I know the Mental and Physical abuse but we never talk about it since we will always have to respect everyone and everything. I am currently overweight but 10-15 pounds but I am constantly talked about my family throughout cousins and aunts and uncles that I’m very fat. My grandparents never seen a overweight Chinese person in her family and is disappointed. I’m currently trying to lose weight but the struggle is real since they talk about why your even trying because they think it’s weird to change and it’s embarrassing. No matter what you do they will put shame on you. If you do the right thing that will simply ignore you. I guess thing won’t ever change. Maybe, maybe not but they are just trying to care for you and not have you weight jeopardize your health in the near future.
Sorry that this is very long but if you gotten this far thank you. And I heard that many people are trying to make being overweight a acceptable lifestyle. I honestly disagree since being overweight does jeopardize your health in the future. I makes you depressed and lazy to do anything in life. In July, I got a personal trainer, and I hated it (especially after the first three sessions), but my mom is super supportive. I went 3 times a week, and eventually when I felt the burn I would tell myself "burn=progress" and that I want to be healthier, feel good about myself. Today weighed in at about 130ibs. I feel good after working out, and im happy that im making progress, and people around me say they see the difference. I can even tell I'm happier, and being big taught me other stuff that I needed to work on about my mentality about my body. I know I can reach my goal weight, and I have all the proper resources to, there's no excuse for me and I can't wait.

It’s good that you noticed quickly what the cause of the weight gain was. For losing it- it’s about 80% your diet and 20% exercise. By diet, I don’t mean a temporary fad diet, but a permanent lifestyle change. You should stick to eating less processed foods, avoid the bad oils & include healthy fats. I like videos from a RUclipsr named Bobby who goes over foods in Costco and other grocery stores. Exercise can be whatever you will be likely to stick to. Also remember it can take about three months (or more) of doing something new to turn it into a habit.

These boot camps won’t work and we already have research about this because of the study on The Biggest Loser. I’m not suprised that the boy gained all the weight back the first time, it’s in line with the study. These camps are really missing the mental health factor to the issue.
You needed to approach the obesity problem from multiple areas. Restriction is a big no for weight loss, again, because you just gain it back. There needs to be obesity focused dietitians, mental health professionals working with whoever is setting up the exercise program. This is the minimum. The negative reinforcement of these camps guarantee gaining back the weight eventually.

But my parents are from another region called Hunan and the dishes there are extremely greasy, and that's probably why so many ppl there have obesity and diabetes. I asked him once if he liked school and he said no. 😢. I'm sure he was stigmatized. It may not even have been his diet but some kids have glandular issues. I also know that the kids are fiends for western foods like kfc and McDonald's which are now all over china. The kids would talk about going there all the time , getting sodas with meals etc. When the kids are fed this regularly, and some of the kids I taught were , because of very busy schedules and busy parents, I'm sure this doesn't help the health issue either

Jesus can set you free, if you confess with your mouth Jesus is lord and believe God raised Him from the death and you will be saved ❤❤❤

The translation of some lines makes the drill instructors seem meaner than they actually are. Like around 9:21, D.I. said “return to formation.” Not “Get out of my sight.”

when I visited China in 2005, I did not see many over weight people. Fast forward to 2019 there are so many. The issues is when a persons wallet grows, the waist grows with it. And also one child policy doesnt help as the one child is spoilt with food as compensation for less time from parents.

Every continent, almost every country on earth (including poor countries) is obese.
The culprit... High sugar, high fructose corn syrup, high carbs, highly processed foods.

Historians will look back at our current times and shake their heads in disbelief at what we eat... honestly it's kinda upsetting seeing this kind of consequence being treated as the kids fault only; parents should take care of their kids diet, and they are ALWAYS the ones to blame, your child wouldn't struggle with weight if you took better care of what kinds of food you put inside your house and how you stimulate them to practice more exercise or lead an active life. Children are often the reflex of how we take care of them, of course some of it gets beyond our reach and we can do almost nothing to control, but when growing up, everything they are getting in contact with, is within our reach.
I feel bad for kids who struggle with obesity and have to deal with it as if they were the only ones to blame.
