I can say with 100% honesty that when people are at the gym almost everyone is too busy dying to notice anyone else. I had that exact anxiety back when I started, now I make it my mission for people to know that it’s fully internal, no one is judging you or even watching.

This isn't related to weight, but when I came out as non-binary and stopped shaving my legs and underarms (I still look like a woman even though I'm not feminine presenting) the gym was actually the first place I felt confident to go in shorts. I got a couple of stares the first few times but you're right, most people don't even notice. It's actually a great place to go if you're insecure about any aspect of your appearance.

Shannon's parents are both big - I think a common problem with being overweight is when you grow up with both your loving parents are overweight, it really normalizes it for you, solidly in your subconscious. There's far more to it than that of course, I'd guess that obesity comes from multiple factors incl. the western diet and the copious amounts of sugar we eat

    • @lpanayi6954

Yes. I know a lot of families where the kids are somewhat overweight and mostly it seems to be due to the parents- also larger- having normalised huge portion sizes at every meal. There doesn't seem to be a lot of awareness in the UK or US now about what is 'normal' re: portion sizes.

I'm curious how Shannon will feel about being bigger as she gets older. She's really young so it seems the health issues associated with obesity hasn't become a problem yet. I say this because I have people in my life who, like Shannon, were very happy being bigger and had no problems with having more curves. Then, they either got old enough (usually in their 30s) or big enough that their weight started to severely affect their quality of life i.e., lots of difficulty and pain walking and moving, sleep apnea, internal organs not working correctly, not being able to do anything without being exhausted quickly, etc. My bigger friends ended losing a lot of that excess weight so they could enjoy life again, instead of being mostly immobile and in pain. It became more of a necessity than a vanity issue. They're still on the bigger end and still love their bigger bodies, but they're a lot healthier now and more full of energy to do things that they want, so we're all happy with that. There is no perfect body size or weight, but there is an ideal range of how your body should function and that looks different on everyone.

As for eating healthy, there's no substitute for eating at home. Don't try to find the healthiest food st McDonald's. It's all junk. Once you start cutting out soda and chips and chocolate, your taste buds change. You'll start to crave healthy food and hunger won't affect you.

One of the biggest lessons I've learned in my life is that satisfaction is a journey. Don't give up on something because you aren't completely happy yet, look for those small progressions that you are making. Maybe you have not lost any weight yet, but that fact that you started exercising and have stuck with it is a progression. Same with playing piano or another instrument. You will not master it within a few weeks, it takes time, but you are better than you were when you started every time you do it. We can apply this to anything in life. When the long term goal seems to big, just try to be better than you were yesterday and you will see, things will come in time

I felt so embarrassed and ashamed to think that just for a moment I had completely forgotten that I was the shortest but chubbiest little girl in the class, how could I have done something that was so stupid of me to do? It was most likely because Debbie, ( who the teacher picked for the part ,) hadn't reminded me that about my body in a while at the time!

14:55 dont have that stuf in your house. you cannot eat it, if its not there. I have no weight issues whatsoever, so I might be wrong here. But if my partner wants to lose a few pounds after christmas etc. we usually agree of no junk in the house.

As someone with an active BED that's resulted in obesity I hate to say this so cliche but it's really not as simple as that. If the food isn't at home, believe me I'd go out of my way to order large amounts of take away food and binge that. Or I'd go to the shops, end up getting carried away and buying so many bad snacks, bringing them home and then eating till I felt physically sick. Even if I have plenty healthy food in the fridge, I'd still order take aways. Then the amount of guilt that comes afterwards hits you like a punch in the face. It's infuriating because really I know better than that, I know what's good for me and what's not. I'm very educated in what a healthy lifestyle and diet entails but that doesn't matter. It's a coping mechanism, and emotions kind of take over sometimes. Especially after stressful days at work or just an overwhelming day. Therapy and seeking professional help is THE best way to try and work on less destructive ways to cope. I can't speak for everyone else with a BED but that's my experience.

Totally agree, I don’t have it in the house so I won’t reach for it. If you have to go out of your way to go and get it, you’re less likely to eat it. It’s a good psychological trick, when treats are in sight and within reach studies always show people eat more.
My partner loves snacks but he has to miss out on having them at home because of me 😂

To anyone reading this. If you're working out, eating or doing whatever, regardless of your size, I'm not paying attention to you or thinking anything negative unless you are rude or obnoxious. I prefer polite people when I'm out and about. That's it. Everything else is irrelevant. I believe this is the way the overwhelming majority of people are. We are busy getting on with our own lives~

I am now 125lbs give or take and to this day I will still occasionally hide a candy wrapper because I feel bad about eating it, worried that one candy will make me revert to old ways. Losing weight for me was/is just a much a lifestyle change as it is a mentality change to get at the root the cause and heal from what brought on the gain in the first place and coming to terms with it in order to move forward. Accepting yourself and gaining confidence is incredibly important but health is even more important, and regardless of how well you might feel at the moment, there is no such thing as a healthy obese person because obesity itself is a disease. Learning to love yourself enough to do the right thing for your health is one of the most difficult goals to achieve. We really don't love ourselves as much as we think.
I'm not obese but my health issues depend greatly on my diet and weight. It is ridiculously difficult to stop spoiling myself and start caring for my health instead through diet, sleep, and exercise, and by spoiling, I don't mean overeating and being lazy, I mean not sticking to a daily routine and not making the right choices every day.
