Bought a 2006 Scion tC with 170k. The alignment was off and the engine had a horrible ticking noise. The car was all stock. The red leather bucket seats, the sporty design of the interior, the 17” alloy rims, she looked mean and ready to gap mustangs. Wrong. The non turbo base model has a 6 speed manual transmission with a whopping 120 HP. Talk about slow. Plus the GDI engine needs more maintenance than just a simple oil change, something I didn’t know about. The base model veloster I had was all bark no bite. I'd say most vehicles are "fixable". The question is how much do you want to put into a vehicle to keep it running. IMO unless it's a classic or something rare (or just something that would otherwise appreciate in value if it was fixed),then fix it. But if it's more than 1/3 or 1/2 the value of the vehicle, forget it. For most vehicles, it's not worth it to spend half the value of the vehicle to fix or replace a motor, unless the car has some meaningful value to you (like it was a family heirloom or passed down through generations).
I've gotten in the habit of checking my oil every month on even brand new cars, and in reality, I check it every time I fill up. I mean it takes about 5 seconds to pop the hood and check it, but it can save you a lot of headaches and money later on if you can keep up on it (especially if it has a leak or burns it). I would say that's probably one of the top reasons people's engines fail--they don't check check the oil and change it regularly). Or some people just wait until a light comes on and then check it. IMO by that time, if you've lost 1/2 quart or more of oil, you've already done a fair amount of damage to your engine probably.

Taught my mom how to drive it in 2 minutes and she swore up and down that she never would learn how to drive manual because her first experience was in a 70s Chevy. My tire pressure monitor was doing the same thing. Unless it's truly out you can reset it by holding down the button hidden in the passenger glove box for about 10 seconds and the light should go off. Replaced the full exhaust system with an aftermarket model about 5 years ago, and now have to do it again. And had to have the driver side front CV joint/axle assy replaced. The driver side hood hinge needs to be replaced. And the rubber gaskets inside the windows need to be replaced. Have gone thru about 5 gas caps. All I remember about Scion is I had a friend who had fried her transmission at around 120k. Unfortunately she still (for some reason) owed about $8,000 on the car even after having it for something like 4 years....
The one thing I did find out about many of those car painting places that say they'll paint your car for like $300. Yes some of them might, but in my experience, the car can't have any rust, it can't have any body damage and the paint can't be actually chipping off and/or if the paint is worn down to the primer, they may opt NOT to paint the car or they won't warrant the work at all. The only people I could see that would then be able to get a paint job from one of those place is perhaps a car that is a bit faded or perhaps has small scratches in the surface of the paint that don't go down to the primer or beyond the paint layer. And again, if the car has any rust on it, forget about it.

    SCOTTY!
I apologize if you’ve been asked before, but I notice the flag on your shelf. Who is your Veteran? My big brother was in the Navy when he was lost in the Gulf in 1990.
As always, thank you for the awesome content.

I just bought a beautiful white 2007 Scion tc 5 speed! Mine looks and drives like a brand new car and it has 207000 miles on it! I put all blue led lights in it, blue and black seat covers, floor matts, and steering wheel, looks gorgeous. I love my Scion tc, got it for only 2 grand! Ill probably keep this car for the next 5 years!

Got my 07 tc with 50k miles in 2013 and now has 119k. Absolutely love it. Standard transmission of course. I check the oil all the time and change it every 5k.

Hay Scotty, would you recommend the manual over the automatic for the most reliability?

I bought a 2005 TC loaded and the onlybsissues was the headliner rattled and the A/C started stinking constantly in Georgia weather. Never an engine oil usage problem.

Hey Scotty, what do you think about using a thicker oil if the tc is burning oil?

Keep up on fluids and get them changed when needed. 5k mile oil change and filter for the 2azfe. Keep checking oil.

Scotty turns the key, 10 seconds later” starts right up” yeah OK, let me see how many lights are on on the dash. Come on man, if it’s burning oil eventually it’s going to ruin the catalytic converter. That car is beat down

I think Scotty offers a lot of knowledge to help out his fanbase, but this is just more Scotty/Toyota bias. Video after video of Toyotas leaking and burning oil, with broke door handles, terrible paint quality, cheap interior quality, but going on about how long they last. Well hell, if you throw enough money at any car and don't mind it leaking and burning oil from 100k+ and the build quality falling apart, you can make any car last 200k miles. I also really hate how he bashes every single Hyundai and Kia he encounters, even when there is nothing wrong with them. He literally goes looking for the most trivial things to complain about on those cars so he can call them crappy.
