A friend of mine has a Toyota Yaris, not sure of the model year but there is just over 240K on the Odo., automatic transmission, and it's never needed to be rebuilt or replaced
Well if you go up on oil weight that's the easy fix and secure to be point of saving the engine from a spun bearing but hey Scotty recommends that water brands are putting as lub.
Hybrids are great for camping. Never run out of power. One can power a camp for a long long time and you always have the reserve that will start the car. Most people start their car for an hour every few days to keep the battery within a range of charge depending on the load.
Did you mean "to avoid"--rather than "not to avoid"? Your use of "not to avoid" suggests that the 94 Celica is actually a "must have" vehicle," and I don't think that's what you meant.

I work at Toyota and had a rav 4 come in today that was this model and when I did the inspection I noticed it was about a quart low on oil. Car had around 206k miles. Kinda funny how this video popped up and answered the question I had earlier as to why this may be happening.
Scott, luv your videos. The 2012 prius v three has the same oil burning problem. I have one and had to replace the engine. Another 170k later another engine gone. Did oil changes every 3k and was adding g a quart or even 2 every 500 highway miles (depended on summer temp). Toyota said the pistons had the same problem but they refused to do anything. Did some research and learned that the v had a this as a common problem. Lesson learned... no more hybrids! You are right, when they hit high miles, they get expensive. All my problems were engine only.
all small cars are easy to maintain. reliability needs a bigger 'range' in order to make rough estimations. vw polos and golfs mae in germany are solid cars, even the sporty racing models. its not a matter of japanese vs european, its a matter of getting what you need and what you want as a second option. hybrid batteries in my country cost 2000 euros, and all hybrids have a 10 warranty which is a perfect deal. i considered buying a 2020 rav4 but it was too pricey; the rest of the toyota hatchbacks were slow, really slow. toyotas are expensive overall but they will last if driven wisely, but that is true for all cars. im not a fan of hybrids tbh, but eventually all cars in the future will be as well as small displacement turbocharged; so it all comes down to what you need

Your videos are a informative, easy to understand, and always entertaining.
Several years ago bought a used ‘09 Camry w/120k miles and it burned LOTS of oil. Had the seals changed (if I remember correctly-was something like that) and it helped a whole lot. Still burns a little oil though. Sold it to my daughter super cheap and she’s driven it halfway across the country many times. Has 215k miles now-still going strong. Love Toyota!
The Prius is ranked #1 by Consumer reports in reliability. It is also the #1 fleet vehicle for Taxi cab companies. My 2008 Prius has 161,000 miles and I have replaced 1 cell in the battery pack only and it is 13 years old. I as well do not see the advantage of Hybrid SUV’s. I will always own a Prius as a daily driver. Toyota’s Synergy Drive in the Prius is unbeatable.
The 2.4 wasn’t Toyota’s best engine between oil burning and stripped head bolts. The V6 avoided both of those issues. Back then the I4s were weak you needed the V6 anyway.
RKGSD Both the 2.0 and 2.5 are very similar. They need a 220 HP gas 2.7 liter version for the Highlander, 4Runner, and Tacoma. Not everyone needs a V6, now that these I4s are very powerful.
Forget all the gas-sipping, gutless 4 bangers Toyota makes. Once your try the 3.5L V6 in the Highlander and floor it...you'd swear you had a V8! 🤯 Tires roast with such ease. The 3.5L V6 even makes the older 3.3L V6 look like it only has 5 cylinders!
I have been a mechanic for 45 years. The older Toyotas with a J VIN code were excellent. The ones with a 1 VIN code are made in the United States. Not as good quality as the Japanese made cars. Same with Honda.
it could simply be a flaw in your analysis of statistics. The toyotas directly from Japan possibly had much more responsible/caring owners and thus aged better It could also be a problem with older vs newer cars in general, not just toyotas, in the sense that newer cars have more parts to break. People could also be driving more miles today than before. Or any other variable. Such as, for example, maybe more female drivers means overall cars last less? etc...
Scotty shoots straight from the hip. Thats why I love his channel. I wanna hear the good of course but hearing the things that will help you avoid trouble to me are priceless. Thanks Scotty.
At 241k miles my Toyota dealer performed an oil consumption test which my vehicle failed. They then replaced the Pistons and rings. I now have 336k miles on my 2008 Camry with the 2azfe engine with no oil burning between oil changes. My car was just under the 10 year old limit for this technical service bulletin. It’s a great commute car that I bought brand new.
Those model of Toyota engine's are notorious for the oil control rings seizing up with carbon because there were not enough oil drain holes drilled in the pistons. You had make sure you were on top of your regular oil changes to prevent the oil control rings from seizing and end up burning a lot of oil.
After having just producing the best, most reliable generation of Toyotas ever, Toyota suits then decided in 1997 to abandon their high quality standards and adopt more "American" standards. Worst boneheaded decision they ever made.
2008 Camry is trash 🗑 as well, the engine burns 🥵 too much oil, the dashboard melts in summer. Toyota won’t change the engine or dashboard if you went after 10 years warranty limit/over 100,000 miles or so. They just come up with something to avoid fixing it. So am still using mine like that. There is a video of the melting dashboard on my channel. Bad choice. SKT In Focus
My 2007 Honda Accord SE with a 2.4 liter 4 cylinder is much better than that 4 cylinder. Same liters, same year, but no oil burning, and it’s a manual which feels amazing. The weird thing is they both make 166 horsepower, and the Toyota has 4 more lb-ft. Of torque. at 165. But the Honda gets better gas mileage, it’s hilarious it’s almost like they’re the same engine, but one is made much better.
I had a '74 Vega. Me and my uncle tore that engine down. I still remember that rumblin sound. The new rings lasted 2 hours before it started burning oil. Decent car otherwise.
Great info Scotty, thanks. I have had 4 Toyota’s in my life so far. Toyota also screwed the pooch on the Toyota Supra turbos in the 80’s many of them blew their head gaskets and they wouldn’t stand by them. Cost many owners a lot of cash to replace the head gaskets! After it was fixed it never gave the owners a problem again, so I hear. I’m getting a old hardly driven 2002 Highlander from my Mom. She can’t drive anymore so she is giving me the SUV. It has the 2.4 motor, so when I saw this video My ears perked up!!! Glad to hear it was later years that had the problem. It is a 2002 with under 40K miles!!! Should last me a long time.
I like how he says to avoid hybrid SUV’s, but only references tech from 10 years ago. Next gen Toyota hybrid SUV’s have crazy gas mileage compared to the 10’s
My 2007 Toyota Camry Se. I sold it to my sister with 166k miles after a year I received recall letter about piston issue of oil burning. Toyota dealership fixed it and gave her 2 week rental. The car is in perfect condition still running over 240k miles. No issues. Fixed!!!!
Hey Scotty. I just wanted you to know. That I got rid of my Chevy 2500 Silverado because all it did was give me problems and I watched one of your videos when you reviewing the Toyota Scion. I went out and bought one. Best purchase ever
I have a 2007 Camry hybrid with the oil problem. I found a recommendation from a Toyota chat website. You basically run some Seafoam in the crankcase and in the tank for a short period then change the oil. I did this and it has improved the oil consumptionl. I have 158k on the car. Was burning 1 quart every 1000 miles. Now less than 1/2 quart for 2000 miles.
Have a 2006 Solara with the 2AZ-FE with over 200K miles (built 02/2006 in Kentucky). The prev owner bought new and changed the oil every 3000 miles at the dealer (have records). Only see smoke at start up if it sits for a while. Uses about a half quart of oil between oil changes. I use synthetic high mileage oil. Drives and shifts like a dream. Bought it for my daughter. Expect to see 300K miles! She loves the car!
Scotty, I had a 2007 Camry hybrid. Burned a quart of oil a week doing 100 miles a day commute. Still good old toyota made it to 300k. Love your videos Scotty.
Scotty, love your shows, informative and to the point. My first Toyota was a new 2007 4 cylinder Camry which had the oil burning problem. In time had to replace the catalitic converter and buy many quarts of oil before the dealer tested it and fixed it. Swore I'd never buy another Toyota but after watching your shows, I'm willing to give Lexus a try. What do you think of the 2014 - 2015 Lexus RX 350?.
Don’t forget about the valve stem seals on the 2AZ-FE...these engines are notorious for blue smoke on start up from oil leaking past the valve seals. Also the head bolts are known for stripping and leaking coolant
I'm staying in Maine until Tuesday. I have a 2020 Toyota Camry. Before driving it off the rental car parking lot, I took Scotty's advice and revved up my engine. So far I have driven almost twelve miles. It's an overall solid car, it has some differences from my similarly sized VW Passat.
Kevs2good . Idk why everyone constantly insinuates he’s on the take. Some are joking of course, but many aren’t.He’s a millionaire from views and subscribers from being honest with people. This is a perfect example. He’s a fan of Toyota quality( my experience has been similar m being bulletproof proof cars. But he will criticize them where they fall short
This is very true about the RAV4s as well as camrys with the same 2AZ engine. Our rav4 used to be a regular oil burner which is fine between every oil change but the burning got severe and it turned to be a bad valve cover gasket. Took the spark plugs out and they were full of oil so the whole valve cover gasket had to be replaced. A friend of ours did it for us dirt cheap and we just had to buy spark plus and the gasket. After the replacement, the car was better than ever and burnt very less oil that is considered normal for cars between oil changes. All of this occurred at 240k miles so I suggest everyone with the same car to have their gasket and spark plugs checked because they're cheap and keep the car running fine.
Very well said Scotty. I'm a Toyota fanatic but I'm also a victim of the Oil burning engine on my former 09 Camry. Lend the car to my son to use as a commuter car for his Summer job and he didn't check the oil frequently like I told him and the next call I received was the engine is making noise and it technically threw a piston/totalled.
Oil-burners are a rarity with Toyota. In contrast,Misubishi builds nothing BUT oil-burners,and has for decades and decades. Thanks for valuable information,Mr "K" !🌞
First of all Scotty isn't complaining he's telling you the facts that Toyota had problems... And second he has stated Toyota having problems before 2020... So your comment is invalid!!
If a Dodge ever burned oil, it would be a Piece of Crap. But if it’s a Toyota engine...Scotty feeds us...“Now Other Than The Oil Burning, It’s Actually a Great Engine”. That we should get it checked out 😄
Yeah I commented, same story if this was a Fiat engine. I put 120,000 miles on my 2012 Fiat 500, never burned a drop of oil. Traded for a 500 Abarth, which I love Most owners don't keep cars 400,000 miles like Scotty always suggests either.
I started at a Toyota dealer at the end of the V06 campaign, which was a new head gasket for 3VZE engines. Mistakes happen. I became acquainted with pulling the heads. 33 lb/ft + 90 degrees + 90 degrees.
Aside from Toyota, GM really screwed themselves with their trucks when they started putting this Active Fuel Management system into their larger engines to try to meet/exceed EPA ratings (they started doing this on the 2007 Silverado's and still do today--although the current design is less problematic, but still stupid in reality). They used collapsable lifters that were prone to jamming in the collapsed position which would cause there to be a gap and the lifter essentially would bounce around and over time could damage the cam lobe and/or brake the pushrod. Realy dumb design IMO and really if you want good gas mileage, buy a car or SUV. You don't buy a truck for gas mileage. You buy a truck to do work and just accept poor gas mileage (like 12-16 MPG) as the price to pay for being able todo work/tow trailers, etc. GM doesn't make their engines like they used to. The older ones (like the 1990's and earlier) were bullet proof and could run 300-400k before needing major work. These newer ones with this active fuel management, majority are lucky to get 100-150k out of them before some major issue, but many people report these lifters failing as early as 30k miles, and the collapsed lifter also causes oil burning over time.
Hey Scotty, I wanted to let you know that I found your video about the Toyota Matrix hatchback to be so very true. I bought a used 2004 Toyota Matrix Xr with manual transmission a couple of years ago, and it’s the most peppy car I’ve ever owned. Alongside the reliability, there’s some serious thrill to dodging wildlife. I’ve even been able to perform an emergency stop maneuver from 55mph-0mph in 5 seconds to avoid hitting a dumbstruck deer that wouldn’t move. Fantastic handling and braking. I highly recommend the Toyota Matrix to anyone curious about it. 😄
I had the same problem too with my 07' Scion TC. Toyota fixed the the oil problem for me at no cost, let me borrow a car for 3-4 months as they addressed the problem. Car has been running fine since (outside of normal old car problems). They have been great to me so my next car will likely also be a Toyota
Kevin K when did you have it done and how many miles did your car have? Because I think mine is out of warranty because of miles but people are saying they got theres fixed even though they were out the warranty

it could simply be a flaw in your analysis of statistics. The toyotas directly from Japan possibly had much more responsible/caring owners and thus aged better
It could also be a problem with older vs newer cars in general, not just toyotas, in the sense that newer cars have more parts to break. People could also be driving more miles today than before.
Or any other variable. Such as, for example, maybe more female drivers means overall cars last less? etc...
I would have thought so as well. But my 2AZ- FE engine and RAV4 were both made in Japan. Same oil burning issues.
@@artyomarty391 They mean manufactured in Japan, not originally owned. They are right hand drive in Japan.
Scotty. Been watching you for YEARS. Love your channel man.
Thank you!
I had a Chevy Prizm. I never changed the oil becausei had to put a quart of oil in every 500 miles.
Bad Toyota? Scotty's check must have gotten lost in the mail this month.
Those model of Toyota engine's are notorious for the oil control rings seizing up with carbon because there were not enough oil drain holes drilled in the pistons. You had make sure you were on top of your regular oil changes to prevent the oil control rings from seizing and end up burning a lot of oil.
😭😭 this the one
😂😂😂dead
True, eventually got rid of my 2008 Toyota Rav 4. Now I get it.
Lol oh my gosh, Scotty admitting Toyota isn't perfect and has flaw's. What is the world comming to, first cornonavirus and now this 🤯
Thanks Scotty! Was wondering why those RAV4 ‘s were so cheap used! Steering clear here!
But for first generation RAV4 are good engines
After having just producing the best, most reliable generation of Toyotas ever, Toyota suits then decided in 1997 to abandon their high quality standards and adopt more "American" standards. Worst boneheaded decision they ever made.
I have a 2002 toyota RAV4 that also burns oil. Same issue. Has 290,000 miles on it. We love it. Gonna change the oil today.
390merc 66 i regret getting that 2008 Camry so I change oil frequently and keep checking the oil always.
SKT In Focus
bruh if you have a V6 engine you won’t get this issue 💀💀
Octane hahahahaha gotcha brother, but the fingers not equal so we can all not afford V6 engines.
Never thought I’d see this video😂
I am Jay Scotty using the words “bad” and “Toyota” in the same sentence just don’t seem right.
@@austinaubrey8628 yeah I agree but Toyota has made mistakes in the past but thankfully, they learned from them.
I am Jay of course just like anyone else but they’re smart, don’t even own a Toyota but can’t deny they’re one of the best still
@@austinaubrey8628 yup
390merc 66 you sound like you blew up a Toyota now think it’s the company’s fault😭😂
I've got one with over 330k. Gives a little puff of smoke at start up but that's it. Definitely outlasted any domestic from that era.
Yup. My 2010 Scion engine blew up. 1000. Mi. Yup still setting in my back yard. And yes we did all the oil changes Tuned it up.
2AZ-FE 2007-2009
Awesome video Scotty, you just saved me thousands literally!!! You are so underrated :)
Scotty is the man!!!!
Yup. I got one. Rebuilt with cheap ebay parts. About a year ago. So far so good.🤞
Scotty's out here giving recall notices and how to kick car manufacturer's asses lol
Brilliant Scotty! Toyota oil burning engine was a 2008 Rav 4 2.4 liter 2AZFE engine the pistons and the piston rings weren't designed correctly.
Thanks for the info Scotty!
Scotty, I had a 2007 Camry hybrid. Burned a quart of oil a week doing 100 miles a day commute. Still good old toyota made it to 300k. Love your videos Scotty.
Scotty “Money Pits” Kilmer
@Al Castill and still riding around in that Celica! The man is a national treasure! lol
scotty "monkey pits" kilmer
Good one
@Al Castill I too would drive the same car if I can afford to rebuild it forever
I've got a 2008 RAV4 and it burns a little oil but not enough to worry about between oil changes. No big deal.
Wow who knew that some Toyota's were junk. Wow I was always convinced that Toyota's were reliable cars. Now I have second thoughts on buying a Toyota.
I think this illustrated his point of not really knowing what new designs reliability is until 5 years later or so.
@Jo Blow thanks for the info. I think we all get it.
You have a video for a 2015 Toyota Tacoma to replace a rear differential lock selection switch
Hearing “money pits” and “Toyota” in the same sentence out of Scotty’s mouth is probably one of the most shocking things this year
You will almost never hear "endless money pit" from Toyota/Lexus or Honda/Acura or an F-150. Ditto for "plastic crap".
Yeah I'm pretty sure it counts as a swear word in scotty's dictionary.
Happy Birthday Scotty!
Exact same issue GM did w their Equinox/ Terrains from 2010-2014. Why there was a class action.
Toyota sending late paychecks, Scotty has turned.
😂😂
I hear the sirens....they are coming for you Scotty !!
Yeah and you too.
Toyota fanatic? Now that’s hilarious. Toyota are very boring cars to own and drive, plus their are slow.
My wife has a 2018 Toyota Camry Hybrid and it is averaging 51.1 mpg. I only know because the car keeps track and tells us on its screen.
Oil-burners are a rarity with Toyota.
In contrast,Misubishi builds nothing BUT oil-burners,and has for decades and decades.
Thanks for valuable information,Mr "K" !🌞
I mean, 100 years or more of engines, making these basic design errors is inexcusable. Air Blows Cold.
I'm not sold on Hybrids or EVs
Scotty complaining about Toyota:
The 2020 apocalypse is complete
First of all Scotty isn't complaining he's telling you the facts that Toyota had problems... And second he has stated Toyota having problems before 2020... So your comment is invalid!!
My grandpa's 2013 Toyota Venza burns oil too. He always tops it off. VVT-I Engine 4 cylinder
Your the man Scotty!

Also messed up on the 1ZZFE engine from the corolla1998-2001 and the 2009 corolla also..
I love you found faults with 2007- 2009 Toyotas,or 2011-2020..and I have a 2010. Love that!
There’s such a thing as a bad Toyota besides ones that are squished or crushed?
The Vega was one of the all time great lemons.
The world is coming to an end!
I absolutely think that too
Huh? How? Why?
I don't think you should be worried about it.

My 2007 Scion Tc has the 2az-fe I have to put 2 quarts of oil in every week
I had the same problem too with my 07' Scion TC. Toyota fixed the the oil problem for me at no cost, let me borrow a car for 3-4 months as they addressed the problem. Car has been running fine since (outside of normal old car problems). They have been great to me so my next car will likely also be a Toyota
Kevin K when did you have it done and how many miles did your car have? Because I think mine is out of warranty because of miles but people are saying they got theres fixed even though they were out the warranty
@@dexmure8034 I was around 145K at the time and out of warranty. They still took care of me
