People are always saying Chevy is better than Ford but I noticed that Chevy leaks oil or light in the engines overheat fords don’t generally do that. You should do a video on Ford versus GM Because people always say bad things about Ford but I know Ford is a lot better than GM and people want to hop on the train and run down Ford

Bless you. My father was a honest mechanic like you. Probably why he didn't make a lot of money. He could listen to a car and 80% of the time figure out what was wrong. Sorry you're retiring and I just recently found your channel.

@@petergustaf5633 I used to have one of those bigger jumpers, that contains a motorcycle battery, but also has an air pump and stuff. Left it in my car one night unlocked by mistake, and it was gone by morning. I found it about a year later being used by one of my neighbors, and I knew it was mine because of the very specific chip out of the plastic after it fell over once. It was SO satisfying picking that thing up and smashing it through his windshield. (He was using it to inflate a tire, and had left it unattended.)
If you change the fluids, 95% of the issues are avoided.

I also have a very good shop do my oil and other fluids, and they know that I know what's going on (ie: I keep EVERY, SINGLE, SERVICE record from the moment the car was new), and can use those records to track changes, what needs to be changed, what's OK, etc.,

My grandpa taught me how to drive my first car. He taught me about gears, the difference between leaded and unleaded gas, how to check the oil, and that I knew how to change a tire. That was 49 yrs ago. Today I bought my first automatic transmission car, a used Toyota, and it was to Scotty Kilmer that I turned to for advice.

My grandfather, too! He was a helicopter mechanic for the Navy. He was driving his 1965 AMC Ambassador until he died in 1980. He fixed lawnmowers after he retired. Memorable advice: Open your hood after parking. Heat kills your engine. He lived in Corpus Christi and Florida. And, flush your oilpan with kerosene after draining the oil. Cleans all that crap out of the oilpan. About a pint will do.
Nah; mine threw wrenches, cussed n fussed, told me greasy hands added flavor to a sandwich, and kicked/punched/yelled at vehicles to establish dominance.
I think engines were scared to fail around him....the ol hairy eyeball would stop any sputter short!

Our 95 Honda brake lights would not go off and ran our battery down. The little nipple on the brake peddle
Brake peddle arm has to turn the brake light switch on and off broke off. We used a bolt and nut through the hole to push on the brake light button and works great.

Need help on replacing broke off studs in the right front wheel of my 95 Honda, Accord. There is a hub holding the studs than we cannot get off. This model has the extra hub against the rotor.
Can you help. My manuals don't cover broken studs replacement.

For example, if one's brake warning light comes on a few years from now, many people who watched this video will have forgotten it by then, and would benefit by being able to look it up in a keyword-searchable index. appreciate the common sense approach of your videos.. with the brake fluid issue.. if your brake fluid is low from pads/shoe wear, it is time for service of the pads/shoes.. usually when the fluid is that low from normal wear, it means there is little to no life left in the pads/shoes.. also, when the pads/shoes are replaced and the calipers/wheel cylinders are compressed it can cause an overfilled reservoir to dump the excessive fluid causing a mess..
Excellent advice. When I was in my 20s and in to my early 30s I was doing some engine rebuilds, and working on high performance vehicles. Now that I am in my 70s my preference is to have my vehicles serviced. I managed to find a decent dealer that has been very honest with me. Most of the time when I bring in my vehicle I know what the issues are. I often check out my vehicle before bringing it in and give them a list of what I found.

I got a Harbor Freight 3gal 100 psi compressor, some hose and a fill kit and the gauge Scotty uses. It was about $70 total. I was sick of driving from place to place looking for air. Works GREAT! I can test and fill if needed to cold tires (no driving around looking for air) and know I have the right pressure in my tires. Works on all my stuff (bikes, dollys( the moving type), kids inflateables etc). Well worth it! Thanks Scotty! I have become a Scotty-A- Holic! LOL!!
I'm a lube tech at Ford, and was one at Toyota aswell and he is completely correct, check everything over when cold and ill tell you most issues you believe you need take to the dealer check right then and there, done one to many tps lights that were on for just for it being cold out, you pay 20 something for diag on that and possibly a nail repair so it's justified but if it turns on shortly after airing up then yes a problem but 9/10 its not, keep up with checking fluids every month or so and changing tire pressure accordingly to weather or terrain, and guess what no lights ever, (im well aware what I'm saying is essential giving away information, and possibly job security for me but don't spend money when you don't have too)

@@HandleHandle233 depends like I said, some dealerships like the ones I work at did free code reads for dash lights, but if required to bring into the shop for an actual diag or look over, dependent on which light or reason, 20 to 100 is normal range.
I have 4 lights on on my dashboard & it was fine when I took it to Firestone for fuel system cleaning ..oil change..& wheel alignment now they want to charge a baby fortune just to look at it...Toyota FJ Cruiser 2008 are they trying to rip me off
@@jenniemalone9403 if you dropped the vehicle off with no codes and it leaves with them they should be held liable, I'd take to another dealership and ask for a code pull and possibly tell them th situation as that doesn't make sense to me
@@jenniemalone9403 Your first mistake is taking your vehicle to a tire place for anything not related to tires. What you get is a wallet flush. Bottom line,,,, screwed.
My brake fluid warning light came on. I went to a place they said there was a leak and referred me to a place right next door. They literally hooked me up for free. I was so grateful.
The most common reason my brake light comes on (Toyota Celica), is because I parked the car.

They charge you spare parts with 100% to 400% on top price.
several years ago my battery got drained and i checked into dealership. They found my alternator needed to be replaced. they did. but they replaced it with another faulty alternator that broke down after a few weeks. I then went to a friend who was an engineer and did service cars in parttime. He told me dont go to dealership instead I should learn preventive maintenance. Things like alternator, serpentine belts, changing fluids, brake pads, suspension system, spark plugs, they all should be replaced when the mileage has been reached. And go to dealership with specific job instruction to them when servicing your car, such as "please replace my brake pads", "please replace serpentine belts", and reject any other offers they give you. and watch the mechanic doing the job. Never come to dealer and say "my car doesn't feel right, please fix it". that's when they would rip you off.

Dealerships are always a bad choice for parts or service
Always remove your brake fluid cap before pushing the caliper pistons back in when doing a brake job. If you've topped off the fluid due to brake wear, there can be a bit too much fluid in there and when you push it back into the reservoir it can crack the plastic and cause a leak.
When you mentioned the recalls are forever part it reminded me of when I worked at a Chevy dealer and someone brought in a 20 year old s10 blazer for a recall that only applied to the first few weeks of production. It was so old we had to look all over the country for the part. When we finally got the replacement rear seat hinge for the recall the Package was so old it was falling apart but we had to either find the part or buy back the truck.
Watching Scotties videos always makes me feel better about my garage mess.

@07:48 my pops is 74 years old and has had that same air pressure guage for at least 25 years. Still works perfectly too.
Scotty, you are so right about the tire inflators at gas stations. Put air in the tire of my Sequoia using one of these, required about 32 psi, the day after I checked the tire pressure with a gauge like yours and it showed 65psi!
the old free-standing ones with the crank to set the pressure and the hose hook actuator are the best ones- but they are an endangered species because gearheads snap them up for their garages- darn gearheads...

Depending on the car, you may have 1 or 2 brake lights. If you only have 1, it could also mean that the parking break is on.
If it is low, as mentioned, don't fill it all the way. If the brake pads are getting low enough to kick the light on, you're likely due for new pads shortly. When the new pads are put in, this will push fluid back into the reservoir. If you filled it too much, you'll overflow when the new pads are installed. Not a problem, but messy.
I'd also love to know where the "coolant" went... Has to be a leak no?
Scotty, I love your common sense practical view on all things automotive! I bought a new Jeep Wrangler right hand drive in 2010 to serve my rural mail route. If they were not the only manufacturer making a factory right hand drive vehicle I would not have bought it. After about 2 years, I was notified of a recall for the airbag clock spring. At that time, my airbag warning light had not ever come on, but I had it replaced for free anyway. Recently, the warning lot has activated and I had it scanned for the problem, which was the airbag clock spring. I figured the initial recall and replacement of a faulty factory part would cover the part for the lifetime of the vehicle. The Jeep dealership told me "Not so. Once a proper repair of a factory recall is completed, if it ever goes bad it will be totally my responsibility and expense to have it fixed." This seems insane to me as airbags are a critical safety component of all modern vehicles and the NHTSA saw fit to order the initial recall. What are your thoughts on this Scotty? Thank you for all of your videos and help!
Wow this just happened so I was driving and as I was coming to a stop my brake pedal went all the way to the floor for some odd reason and it turns out it was the master cylinder that's amazing how you made a video right when this happened to me lol
Those are great tips on getting your problem recognized and fixed without going to a repair shop. I learned those tips down through the years and a few the hard way. I hope those viewing this video will remember this and check their vehicle if they have these problems.

Hey scotty love the showman I’ve learned so much I’m just watching a program. I had a front wheel bearing making noise I knew it was the right front wheel bearing. I took it to four different repair shops and everyone tried to rip me off. Telling me it was the rear wheel bearings telling me it was the brake everything but what I knew was wrong with it. Finally I said the hell with it took it over my friends house who has a car lift pull the tire off replace the bearing noise on the way . I took the bearing back to each one of the crooked repair shops show them the war out bearing and told them that they were safe I need to get out of the business. It took me about an hour to fix my Truck. I found out about 98% of car repair shops are crooks and it’s a shame. I love the show keep them coming Scotty
I just found this channel and I instantly LOVE IT! So true, my AC was working and then it just stopped blowing air while I was driving. I took it to a chain and they said it was the AC Clutch, etc etc, would be ready in about an hour for $775. OUCH! I took it to a mom and pop auto parts store that I have been frequenting for years because well, its a local mom n pop. The owner came out and checked everything. He started with maybe a fuse relay, then did the screwdriver magnetic something test, then got in my car, oh a 2011 Honda Civic EX, and bumped under the glove box. It started to blow air like normal. It was my blower motor. Cost me $79 bucks and I was able to change it myself in under 15 minutes. No disrespect but has anyone asked or thought Scotty looks like Dennis Hopper?

I have heard that some people drive with one foot on the accelerator pedal while resting the other foot on the brake pedal. They do not understand why the brake light keeps coming on or why they have to have a brake job done on their car so often.

Great explanation on the brake fluid. I always wondered where it could be going without a leak in a sealed system.
Another fix for no heat in the cabin is change your interior air filter. These filters get plugged over time and need to be replaced every year or so depending on the amount of dust your encounter. Lots of gravel road travelling , you need to change it more ofter. Lots of city driving you probably will change it every 2-3 years. I have a 2019 RAV4, I've been driving it 1.5 years and the interior air filter is still a-ok, but I check it every time I change the oil. The filter is located in most cars behind of above the glove compartment.
The hell with car dealers. I had a recall for the "bowtie" emblem on my 2010 Chev Silverado tailgate BUT, nothing about the paint. It's been peeling off 4 years after I bought the damn thing. Bankers must have shares in dealerships. Bunch of deviant crooks.
Businesses are classified based on their dominant source of revenue. Ford -- and probably many others -- is listed as a "parts seller". Which is to say that the only reason they sell cars is to sell parts for repair later. They're generating their own demand. _They don't make money on the initial sale, but instead, they make it on the 5-10 years of repairs afterwards._
Dealerships make there most of there money on selling addon crap and services long term
My 2012 Camaro LS3 started rotting at a rear wheel arch in 2015. 3/4 inch bubbles in the paint above the rear wheel. My dealer wanted to be in charge of all the process, started telling me they had to do it, they had to schedule an appraisal, wouldn't let me know where the regional appraiser was, wouldn't let me talk to him, I had to do it on their schedule etc etc. I told them to shove it, any GM center could do it. And then they told me that GM wouldn't honor the eight year warranty on the body because they talked to Insurance and the panel had been repainted once (actually at a body and restoration shop that uses only factory techniques. The car had been keyed a foot away from the rot and the GM procedure was to paint the whole thing, including removal and replacement of the rear side window. The insurance Co wouldn't go for it, and it ended up being part of a case the Shop levied against the Insurance Co. So it was documented IN COURT that my car had the correct GM procedures done as part of a repair that was a FOOT away from the rot), and the rot hadn't broken through the paint yet. The dealership squashed the whole thing with its interference. As if they gave warranties and not GM. I would love to know what F'd up thing they had going on with my Ins. Co. GM regional wouldn't help, the warranty claim had been closed. How I would love to be trapped in an elevator for 15 minutes with my old service manager from (the now defunct, big surprise) Clay Chevrolet, Norwood MA. That "man" cost me thousands in resale; the quarter is wiped out and it would cost 7 grand to fix, out of my pocket now. 7 grand to fix a car I could sell for 12K. Sonofabitch. Honda or Toyota would NEVER treat a customer like that.

@@rayeversole3698 In the early 1980s, my mother bought a Ford Taurus. It was the early years of clear coat and this began falling off. Turns out the banker in the same small town my mother bought her car got his repainted free and the dealer would not repaint my mothers. She should have called the area Ford representative.
Simple things but very important to keeping a car a long time economically. My 2008 Prius needed a water pump brakes and a 12 volt battery and that’s it after 140,000 miles. 50 mpg

Scotty thanks for being a real American about these things. Today the car companies use the cheapest parts yet charge the highest prices. Then when u get anything fixed its outrageous and never lasts. Quality no longer exists. Im glad honesty and a true mans word still does. Much love and gratitude.
Try a Toyota or a Honda. I drive cars that are 20 yrs old and never have problems. Just keep up with changing fluids.
In the #5 section - talking about tires and pressure, I thought you would've mentioned to set your tire pressure by what the Manufacturer decal in the vehicle says. Not by what the tire says. The decal or sticker is usually found in the driver's door frame or on the end of the door itself.

I once had to calm this lady down by torquing all the lug nuts on one wheel twice with my impact and showing her how I fixed a leak. She freaked out literally shaking and shivering about one of her tires deflating. All the schrader valves in her wheels' valve stems were loose for some reason, and one of them were loose enough to leak.
Ive pulled out one of the headlight relays so I could get the service vehicle light to pop up on the dash. I’ve prank a few people I know with that gets them every time they go into panic mode. So I pop the relay back in and they always say what you do lol

They have a warning light to tell you that the warning light warning light is warning you to change your Magic Tree air freshener.. That's £200 from a Ford main dealer... cherry fresh scent is extra...😜

I read a story a while back about an older woman who had a 1960s car which she had driven since it was new. What she did was take advantage of all of these "lifetime" warranty repair deals. There were these at muffler shops, etc. She had a fix done once and then when it needed the same repair again, it did not cost her. I am sure the repair shops got tired of seeing her! (on the other hand, my mother kept buying the extra repair insurance on her GE washer. After many years, the washer broke. They tried to get out of the insurance deal by saying the washer was "too old". They were made to honor their insurance and fix it).

A simple check i learned with tires is a low pressure will be hotter, a quick temp check will show around 4 degrees higher on a tire that is 5 psi down, this could vary depending on climate and sea level. The best time to check is just before sunrise but thats a bit too early for me lol
That hydraulic press in the background has more stuff on it than our Xmas tree each year! Lol.

Scotty, you're something else.... (in a good way). Just yesterday a friend of mines mini van wouldn't start, the battery was under 10 volts and is fairly new. I figured it out pretty quickly. She spends a lot of time with the doors open loading and unloading her stuff and doesn't drive enough to keep battery topped up. I have talked to her about this in the past but she knows I'm pretty stupid so just ignores that kind of info. This is the first time this has happened to her. Every time I pop the hood I give the battery cables a good wiggle pull. I charged the battery and checked the alternator output. I'm sure all of this will happen again! Thank you for sharing your very valuable info, knowledge and experience!

What you say is so true about dealerships trying to sell you things you don't need - years ago I took my car for a recall and they told me that I needed motor mounts, transmission work and brakes but I didn't believe them so I took it to my regular mechanic and he told me all that stuff was fine! I think the dealership tried to take advantage of me because I was a young woman and they thought they could snow me! Thanks for all the good info!

Oh, had my '80 Turd-cel out for a 100 mile ride today & it did great doing 60-65 on the highway. Hadn't been driven in 2 weeks. The flaws with that split front wheel bearing set up was sick as was the rear control assemblies that rotted out but that was it. Still gets 30 mpg too.
I suffered several years with a battery not holding a charge. I finally took it in and guess what: the door was (which was inoperable to me) was stuck in the own postion. $130 bucks got it fixed, but I was at a shop that I had used as my go-to shop for years.
I don’t even own a car and I enjoy your videos. Your knowledge and wise advise will be part of my deciding factor when I eventually do buy a car! Thx!
Talk about warning lights, Audi has a “ Service Due” warning that comes on every 10k miles. This is fine, but they won’t let you reset it like you can for the oil interval light.

Get that "Fixed" gadget..I paid $20.00 on line..it tells you everything.& it lets you turn off engine light...Went to a mechanic friend..his machine said the same..(& it's good for more than 1 car)
Yea man mine a4’s old i can clear mine myself but get a $20 code reader it will let u clear it/reset it.

Great Tips as always!👍 I hear ya on the "Service Required" light. When I first saw it I was asking "what's this about?". Instead of panicing and going to the mechanic (like most women do...thank goodness my dad taught me a few things), I handled it like I do with computer or phone problems...looked up info on it in forums. I looked up in mechanic forums (mine's a 98 Acura)...found the directions...was unsure right order of doing things (ya know...pat my tummy first then stand on my head..or do I stand on my head first?🤣)...and searched a RUclips video showing which buttons in which ORDER to press...I reset it! Wrote the directions down in my manuel so mext time it comes on I know how to do it.😁
Yup. RUclips and the internet are LIFESAVERS for many simple things now. For cars, computers, etc.

For all my years working on cars and driving them, I have only experienced this light coming cuz of low brakefluid ONCE. Customer came to get his car after service/repair on a Monday morning and didnt dare to drive it so the boss gave him a car to borrow for the day and I came in for work that Monday and got the job of checking whats wrong with this car with the brake lamp signal in the instrument cluster. I run a diagnostic test and it said it was low on fluid. I just filled some and that was it... I got the blame for that because someone with a similar name actually had the job, not me. I just fixed it.
Sometimes you just got to fix stuff on the go and not spend 10-15 minutes arguing whos to blame

I’ve always said, household lightbulbs need to be made like check engine lights. I’ve had a check engine light on for 25 years.
That’s the lesson about warning lights... lightbulbs are a scam.

Scotty reminds me of the union mechanic at United Air Lines in the engine shop. But his Scottish accent was so strong that we could hardly understand him! When I mentioned that to him and used the word "Scottish," he thanked me because all of the mechanics called him "Scotch!" This Scotty has the best advice in all areas of cars, and should be commended for having these videos here on You Tube! His advice is far better than just useful, and everyone with a car should be watching these videos! Where did your accent go, Scotty? :-)

Scotty, this is almost certainly the best advice I've ever seen on RUclips. Well said. Now retired, spent some of my working life "In the trade" both buying and selling cars. Plus fixing where required.
The previous owner of my MG decided to sell cheaply having been quoted well over £1000 to fix. That's UK ££ not US $$,
Needing something to get to work come Monday, decided to get rid so bought another car. I paid a price to allow for any repairs. I fixed that car for £15. ( about $20 US ) .. the fault was a BMW part used on UK Built MGs. The Bavarian outfit used to own the Rover/MG Group company before asset stripping and eventually the MG- IPRs were sold off dirt cheap to the Chinese. Over the years, I could provide numerous examples where car consumers ( many of whom never bother to locate the Hood/ Bonnet release on their cars ) pay well over the odds for their motoring. Had they completed those regular checks, including those under the hood/bonnet checks recommended by ALL manufacturers, most would save themselves thousands over the years. What some folks pay for their motoring would make your eyes water. I bet you know what I mean.
Anyway, keep up posting the good stuff educating the car consumers of this World. They need it although some folks will never learn.
