@@hoitlygtlio That isn't the point. An honest person would have told the seller that the problem was just a loose vacuum hose. You aren't going to get a further discount on the price that was already offered. As for mechanics, like Scotty, you get return business by being honest. Word of mouth is important. If you hide a simple fix from a customer hoping to make "big bucks," you won't stay in business long.
That is being honest in the world of buying cars. We are not talking about the world of running a business. You are comparing apples and oranges. So if I go look at a car and change the spark plugs to see if they are the issue then I'm obligated to leave the new ones in and tell the seller everything? You are crazy! If the seller wants to know all of that then they should pay a few hundred and have a mechanic go over the car and figure out the problem and fix it and then sell it.
@@hoitlygtlio Honesty is honesty, in the world of mechanics, car sales, gambling, and marriage. I would know that I cheated the seller, and that would be enough.
Then the seller needs to pay a mechanic to go over their car before the sale. Just like I would pay a mechanic to go over a car before I buy. If the seller wants to know what i or my mechanic found then they need to pay for the labor. That's how things work. No one has any reason to expect something for nothing. And not giving out free information is NOT being dishonest.
That does it I'm getting a scan tool, you've drilled that pragmatic reality into my mind. Instead of always going to my friends with scan tools, now some of my other friends without can come to me.

Ultimately that is true. I live in Houston like Scotty does and this city is so large you really need a car. I bought a 2001 lexus gs300 with 181k on it for 1700$ i believe I circumvented many used car problems by going with lexus. So far i really like it.

This man providing value non-stop
My brother was mad when I bought a Tacoma. He sells Dodges. When he asked me why, I told him I didn't want Dodge problems. Interrogation over.
Good move👍
Well you dodged a problem... Eh?
He was sore because he was planning to make his next car payment off of you.
Im surprised he didnt try the maintenance excuse like its still 1960 and American cars are built well
I just reved up my engine...
Now it has blown gasket.
😆😂
...now walk away from it.
@@Abravado 😂😂
Endless money pit.
You don't want a piece of this walk away!
When you see a high mileage Infiniti, don’t buy it!
Too late for me, but save yourself;)
Best laugh of the day...Thank you !!!!!!! Sorry about the infin.
I almost did that....
Whew
LMAO
let me guess G35 ???????
Rumor has it they drive to Infiniti
dealership.
Thanks Scotty, worked on cars and trucks before OBD. Now getting ready to buy used, you really help.
Seller: WHAT R U DOING!!!!!
Me: scotty said to see if it shifts smooth into reverse, in town and on the highway.
EABA EndAllBeAll hella underrated comment 😂😂😂
This. 😂
Scotty: You’re a rockstar. Thanks for these vids.
This man is the best👍
That does it I'm getting a scan tool, you've drilled that pragmatic reality into my mind.
Instead of always going to my friends with scan tools, now some of my other friends without can come to me.
Steve Silvas what type of scan did you get?
One of my favorite channels on RUclips and I’m not even a mechanic
“Walk, don’t run away” That’s the casual way you diss the car - keep your cool as you turn your back. Thanks for a super-useful video Scotty!
Hehe.
Walk, Don't Run Away.. Or run don't walk how many pairing? Isn't that the thing going around about the Democratic party? Bad cars, bad party run away from. LOL. Live Free or Die... As the sign says above your garage Scotty
I love how well you explain things with a slight sense of humor and energy.
Scotty is s one of a kind mechanic! Wish there was more like him. I have learned a lot from his advice;)
My dad's work truck has been declared a total loss from the insurance. We are currently shopping for a used F-150. We would benefit from the scan tool. Thank you Scotty!
Thanks Scotty, I only drive used cars. Honda’s. I will remember this one when need to replace one of them.
Same
I got my old 2004 honda and it runs like a champ, never got any mechanical problems, never had any issues at all, just keep a yearly maintenance by changing oil and oil filter...
I don't even have a car. They're endless money pits. I love Scotty's show anyhow!
MrDan557 drive a Toyota or Lexus.
MrDan557 what do you waste your money on?
MrDan557 another waste of money: state funded transportation like trains and busses
@@kloschuessel773 That's why I ride my bicycle everywhere or get a cab. I have good clean public trains running right across the road on top of that, so why bother with a car? :-D I'd rather travel then spend thousands every year on some endless money pit. :-D
Hey, good idea for a RUclips channel!
Want to save money ?
Don't buy a car.
buy a bus
I like to drive too much. Bought a Kia for $400, rebuilt the front end, put a power steering pump in it, and I now own a great little car with no payments and no issues
Ultimately that is true. I live in Houston like Scotty does and this city is so large you really need a car. I bought a 2001 lexus gs300 with 181k on it for 1700$ i believe I circumvented many used car problems by going with lexus. So far i really like it.
I agree but having your own personal transportation is better than anything. I’ve been catching the bus for a while and it sucks. I like the freedom of owning a car I can go wherever I want plus women like when you have your own car.
Renting is alright i guess.
It is so nice to hear someone in the automotive industry with integrity
_"Walk, don't run away..."_
Whew! I'm glad it's not the other way around because it's a long way home and I'm no spring chicken.
Should have said," Run, don't walk." from it. But move away at your own chosen speed.
Great advice as usual. Wish I lived close enough for him to be my mechanic.
I can tell he's a genius in the car mechanic trade
Anyone would be lucky to apprentice with him
Jeez, wouldn't it be nice if there was an electronic scan tool you could attach to a new potential girlfriend to do a diagnostic for previous problems. LOL!
She'd buy it for you! 😉 JK!
Hell yeah
sorta...is... it's a pregnancy test. Social media also does a decent job, too many titttty out photo's don't mean too good for example.
There is one - unfortunately SHE LIKES IT "TOO MUCH" Something about a "good vibration"? It comes with batteries. She don't need you no more.
NOLL72 Lol yes I’ll buy for sure it will save you thousands and thousands in the divorce curt
Scotty’s advice on buying a used car: “just walk away and you’ll have the most perfect used car that you never get to drive.” Fantastic advice, Scotty.
Alternatively, my girlfriends advice: If you dont want a bad car, trouble or high costs, dont drive it.
4:56 this is the priceless joke of a honest mechanic like Scotty.
The only scan tool I need is scotty waving his arms. It comes back with all of the codes.
😂🤣
hahahah!!!
Nuts
In semaphore
Hahaha
Scotty, you make me look good! Because of your videos I actually look like I know cars. Thanks for your hard work and dedication to helping all the wannabe mechanics! God bless you and your family my friend.
Scotty, great tips! I'm 34F that had my dad look at any car I'm buying through the years. I now have 2 daughters of my own that I'll be helping buy cars in the very near future. My dad lives pretty far away now and these tips will not only help me buying a "new to me" used car right now, they will help me with my daughters. Some useful information I can pass on to them for their future kids too!
Scotty kind of reminds me of an older Saul Goodman.
...with a mind like Mike Ermantrout
Thank you so much! You just prevented me from making another big mistake! Buying a Toyota pickup!! Thanks Scotty!!!
I want a scan tool that has Scotty inside it telling me all this stuff when I need it :D
Have Scotty's laugh when it comes across a tripped code!
Oooh “it just needs a tune up YOU HAVE NO I.D.E.A” 😆
Dam wish i had found scotty earlier save me couple thousand dollars.
word.
Ikr I bought a crappy Z in high school 😕
08:49 WOW ...Scotty ...you just opened my eyes by alot with the Check Engine light scam, i never thought about that. Thank you!
I LOOOOOVE this guy!!! His videos are a pure joy to an ole mechanic as myself. He ALWAYS brings a smile to my face. Sending love from South Texas.
Scotty you inspired me to go buy a used car and try to fix it myself and I did running good all I have to do is change the O2 sensors now thanks a lot you have also save me a lot of money love the videos Man
9:37 / "You want to eliminate any of the crappers..." Well said.
"Complete stupidity" - Photo of the Capitol Building
I saw that right as I read that
Darn, wished I had a scan tool before I got married 😉
Funny
Lmao. Great comment of the month
Bet it would have said 'no communication' as soon as you have 'plugged' it in.
LOL That is one hell of an idea.
I KNOW WHERE THE PLUG IN XD 😘😘😘😘😘🤣🤣🤣
Man, whoever is doing the pics has such excellent timing That just keep cracking up throughout his videos.
Hey Scotty, Should I.....
Scotty: Walk away.
.....get... married...? okay....
hey Scotty, thanks for your car info videos! i've learned so much and i love it that you are not pressured by any company/sponsorship and this gives all of us an unbiased opinion. please keep up the videos and i look forward to your next one.
I Love your channel!
It's so awesome that you're a mechanic but still have time for us
Love from the east
I love the classic reverse on the highway test, absolute game changer! Side note. Great video Scotty!
Thinking of buying a used car, so the scan tool would really do me well now
6:15 This video gets a thumbs up for this part alone
I am a mechanical engineer myself and everytime I watch your video I always impress with your knowledge and honesty.
Thanks from Indonesia.
scotty: walk away from it

TOYOTA CELICA TATTOO!!!! make it happen Scotty!
Thanks Scotty for saving people from the endless money pits of 3:49.
people dont learn ..if its shinny and you can poke at things they will BUY IT... ….
Thanks for being an honest person and taking the time to inform the public about scams and teach those who don't know about how to work on automobiles.
Never thought of dealers actually taking the check engine light out, good tip
Individual sellers do this as much or more than dealers do.

I will come back to video, write down list and buy the scan tool. Love ya lol stay safe during this crazy epidemic. God bless.
Scotty is one if my most watched You Tube channels. I couldn't imagine how much money he has saved people over the years. JohnG
Machanics hate him
@@barrontrump3943 because no one's buying the useless endless money pits anymore or at least those who washed him and actually had the dignity to listen because mechanics other than Scotty tend to love the cars that are the worst because they make the money and they hate the cars that don't break such as Toyota because they hardly ever come in to be fixed and they make no money off of them
Meanwhile mechanics are getting rich off of Chrysler's and Range Rovers
Silas McGee yep i figured as such. Im surprised he hasn’t had any death threats by now. I got my ‘14 corolla and its the opposite of a money pit ;)
Same here. Learned quite a bit about my vehicles. You don't realize how much you don't know until you listen to Scotty's videos daily.
Ya brighten my day eveytime I watch you here down under.
Really powerful lessons from a professional mechanic like you.hoping I could buy a great used car that could last for many years
Scotty is always dropping knowledge just like that scan tool when finding codes!!! Lol
"I KnOw WhAt I HaVe"
Scan tool says otherwise
Great informative info. Thanks! I'm an old school backyard mechanic and never get tired of picking up new tips :-)
Oh, Scotty, you are the best! I’m a 70 year old Grammy, & I only ever buy used. My husband used to be a big help on checking them out beforehand, but he says they are so complex today he doesn’t trust himself to make a good decision. I’ve been saving all of your tips so I can be knowledgeable when the time comes to purchase. I’ve even bought a few products to help my beloved 260k plus mileage Toyota Highlander last longer! I’m getting me a scan tool asap! ❤
