Beyond giving the world dozens of English language masterpieces and inventing countless words (including the word countless), William Shakespeare, ever the overachieving bard, especially had a way with the romantic turn of phrase. Anthony John Peters explains why Shakespeare's coy use of metaphor was so effective -- and may just help you get a date today.
Lesson by Anthony John Peters, animation by Kat Llewellyn.
look buddy, Shakespeare was great and all but I ain't about to stab myself for my crush lmao
Lmao im 5 years late but Lmao
Fair enough. Romeo would have benefited from paitience himself. Waiting a few hours to drink that posion was all it took for that happily ever after which never came.
Oh that was so informative, thank you for entitling this video "Shakespearean dating tips" while not including ANY dating tips.
+Philosophicalyoungmind You did not get it? Then read some of his sonets. And the aforementioned play Romeo and Juliett. The key is the sweet and ornate language, the flattery, the mastery of words. Perchance Shakespeare did not give exact dating tips, but knowing and quoting his words be some sort of a beginning.
@@typograf62 I am disappointed :(
😂😂😂
I bought a "translated" version of the Merchant of Venice for school once. When you don't have to read a sentence 3 times to make sense of it, his work is great :P
Yeah, why read the hard version, first when you can better understand it with a version in an easier language?
@@sampeacaml9307eems like schools just want us to suffer lol
Like if you have a desire to put balloons in a toaster.
0:24 William Shakespeare can right up to 3 lines of writing at the same time? No wonder he's so popular now.
Thanks for making me notice that. =)
This reminds me of something a friend once told me, "The thing about Shakespeare is his stuff is all about sex and violence, once you realize that his works become a lot more interesting."
am i late?
Let's be honest, the greatest way a date started in Shakespeare was Horatio's "here, sweet lord, at your service"
Many think that Shakespeare didn't invent the words we attribute to him, but picked them up from the slang of his time. They probably started somewhere in the lower classes, likely among the women.
(I think) At one point in a Shakespearean play one person says (something like)
"thou hast undone our mother"
and the other person replies
"villain, I have done thy mother".
Yup, a yo-mamma joke. (Kinda.)
It's from Titus Andronicus. There's also a scene where two rapists are baked into pies and served to their mother. Good times
1:26 oh Shakespeare is VERY different than today's catcalls, How dare you compare those two
Thou art the star
Staying in my heart
Thine light maketh I go on 💕
Shakespeare is not BORING. If people could understand how passionate he speaks they would probably learn a few things. Nothing has changed much because jealousy, and hate still exists when it comes to love. ( I can testify from personal experiences)
i never hated shakespear. i actually think its a shame that we never learned about shakespear at school 🙁
freaky bae it's a shame you never learned spelling at school
We learn nothing but Shakespeare at our school...
shadysaar You should actually be more than relieved! Teaching kids Shakespeare plays like Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet is the worst thing to deal with! I can barely love Romeo and Juliet because of the way the kids and the teacher acted in class.
I learnt Shakespeare in school and trust me, his plays are good but reading them caused me to lose one of my 3 braincells
poor shakespeare, getting booed at the start.
The only thing I have to add to using pretty words: Practice equally attractive actions.
The problem isn’t Shakespeare, the problem is READING Shakespeare. Trying to read a play diminishes the emotion and excitement of the stage, it’s intended medium. It’s like how a movie is never as good as the book, because you always lose a certain something.
We're starting a Shakespeare unit in my class today and us students are surprisingly into it. I think that's in part because every time there's a ghost my teacher yells "OOOOOOOO"
Wasn't his stories mostly end up in tragedy?
No? He wrote many romantic comedies too. Go check them out!
He is using the spelling that was using the spelling that was preferred in the English Augustan era (Queen Anne - George II), and found on the additional plays section in the 1664 Third Folio amongst other places. It was one of many ways of spelling his name found over the years. His own signatures gave us Willm Shakp, William Shaksper, Wm Shakspe, William Shakspere, Willm Shakspere and William Shakspeare. The modern spelling is just convention (maybe).
And yet we still emulate his works. True, using the same language verbatim does sound drab and past its time, the method behind the language is what we can learn from and what we use. Language today is much more harsh, brutish and blunt, and children today are brought up with it, not wanting to listen to the more subtle, complex and acute language that is used by Shakespeare.
Shakespearean language is so beautiful!!!
Othello: O Spartan dog!
so dated.. 400 year old pickup lines
That still would work some girls think your smart using those words thus will hangout and nexflix
15 years old, love Shakespeare, and proud of it.
You're 24 now, are u alive?🤔
As any student of Shakespeare knows, he used iambic pentameter A LOT. As such, the line should be pronounced, "As IS a WING-ed MESSenGER of HEAven", with a very clear two syllables on "wing-ed". If you're going to have a designated narrator, they should know how to pronounce the lines, doncha think?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the words he apparently created, wasn't they just the slang words being used at the time? His plays were for everyone so he would of used everyday language.
Not everybody could read so the slang of the commons didn't make the archives except for in Shakespeare.
In the Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, the language used is specifically on a subject you wouldn't typically go into the first time you meet someone. One of the big stepping stones in a relationship is knowing if you agree (or agree to disagree) about God, whether he exists or not or if you don't care if he does. I'm not saying it is a good idea to marry someone the day after you meet them, ever, but the love between those two was conveyed as truly as possible given the restraints on time.
I tried this advice by reading _Richard III_ and ended up stabbing my future wife's then husband, her husband's father, and then, with her father-in-law's corpse nearby, I wooed her by threatening to stab myself if she would just say the word. Did I do it wrong?
I love the Flight of the Conchords reference! "You're the most beautiful girl in the room"
Basically Shakespeare writes complicated soap operas. Awesome!
EXACTLY! Haha!
I wish the RUclips descriptions had the qualifications of the lesson maker, as in doctor, masters in literature, etc.
if you can show me that you can pick up a girl using Shakespeare, then I'll do my best to read all the books.
I'm madly in love and some Shakespeare could sooth my heart right now.
MY TEACHER IS ANTHONY JHON PETERS! HE WROTE THAT OMGGGGGG
Shakespeare invented the first version of my name which is Nerissa who is Portia's lady in waiting in the Merchant of Venice. I even volunteered to read her lines since my name doesn't come up in anymore stories or plays. Neresa is my name. ^-^
i want to know more about the narrator! His voice is so sweat,, so.. then any information relating to him?
A lot of those words where not invented by him.
But he was familiar and creative with language, plus he wrote a lot.
The word assassination for instance is first seen in McBeth.
But he most likely did not invent it, as it comes from an old arabic word.
Still the man is brilliant and I love his works.
Here is something interesting:
Shakespeare: Original pronunciation
/watch?v=gPlpphT7n9s
It makes such a difference
Damn great voice acting
What do you mean by out of touch? Given the circles he moved in, was he out of touch with his social peers for his time, out of touch with people in general, or does he feel out of touch for us because we are not accustomed to the language he uses?
the source volume needs to be increased please ^^
*mischievous (Webster's notwithstanding)
We don't really know if Shakespeare INVENTED words, or was just the first known person to write them down. Many of the words he was using may very well have been common to the time in which he lived.
Oh, do I want to be treated like garbage? I didn't realise. But you're clearly the wiser one here so go ahead and do what Your Majesty thinks is right.
I tried this. It didn't work :( I think I did it a little wrong... I told her that she was like a crow among doves. She did not take it as a compliment to her outstanding beauty. In fact, she slapped me and left the room.
LMAO who wouldn't
who wouldve know that my english teacher is Anthony John Peters
There are ways of translating the method rather than simply using the language. You essentially want to subliminally suggest to her that she loves you, or at least the idea that you love her. Being too forward, or too obvious of your intentions can and likely will be construed as offensive.
love Shakespeare
What about Prejudice?! Shylock lost because of an unfair trial based on it. He's Jewish, so he lost. Poor Shylock, it's philosemitic to me!
Apparently, old Shakes was the first to describe a girl as an Angel
..ow where did I hear that? John Green maybe? Or Vsauce. Something like that.
These are 400 year old pickup lines.
I guess you could say it's dated.
Shakespeare inspired Pickle Rick?!!

I'm so down bad 😞
I love Shakespeare cause I start to hate a character then they'll die
Coach
To get the one you love, to love you back.
This sounds like a horrible act. What did he mean?
Well done but too much fast
The last advice wont work... believe me
Haaahahaha, yeah, "to discover the best ways to get the one you love to love you back" - like proposing after knowing each other for what, 20 minutes at the most? Or completely ignoring her (or dragging her around a room, according to one very dramatic movie interpretation) as you procrastinate doing something important, then killing her father and leaving without even checking on her?
Shakespeare invented my name (Jessica) so I guess I owe him that lol
The Merchant of Venice
Did you find your Lorenzo😂
Perhaps thou could cease courting trollops?
Well, I'm french, THANKS FOR NOTHING SHAKESPEARE
❤
Or, you know, you're seeing the world as you think it is rather than how it actually is.
I mean... assassination is just making the assasinate into a noun, and it comes from assassin, Shakespeare didn't invent that...
mis·chie·vous
Get the girl you love... if she understands the historic gibberish ^^
As a foreigner it is really hard to understand Shakespeare's language.
BUTSBUTSBUTS!!!!
as much as i should like the works of shakespeare to be better appreciated, this video is misguided lol
I don't think these would work at all.
An educated mind is very attractive and date-worthy!
*Shakespeare
boooo at you
Funny how dating tips were never mentioned
#clickbait
Reviving proper English :)
But... you spelled Shakespeare wrong.
🖐🤗
Gotta use the smiley face...B*tches LOVE smiley faces :)
What I got from this episode: Read Shakespeare. Get laid.
I guarantee you're one of the kids who boo at shakespear
Using the word "Shakespeare" within any classroom in the 21st century has become almost as dangerous for teachers as putting balloons in a toaster, unless of course words like "deconstruction", "phallogocentrism" and "patriarchy" are used in the same sentence.

What exactly is Troplusfix Dating Secrets? How does this thing really work? I see many people keep on speaking about this popular dating course.
I don't think you'll ever get high odds on that one... Regardless of what he did or didn't accomplish in his time, Shakespeare is boring and outdated today. Kids boo for good reasons.
Historical evidences have shown Shakespeare did not wrote all those famous works.
Either was stolen, cheat, bought or simply plagiarism.
Let see how far this Anthony guy achieve with those archaic language on modern women.
"Shake-Spear" itself is a violent word, his ancestors must have loved war and death.
clickbait!
what?! I mean who moans at the mention of Shakespeare?????
dafuq did i just watch
All the Shakespearean dating you need: ruclips.net/video/tR0xYEMlMi4/видео.html
A pitiful attempt to defend the most banal writer who ever lived. "Dull" does not even begin to describe Shakespeare. It would be like trying to use a billiard ball instead of a scalpel for open heart surgery.
come see how this man tries hard lol
you have no idea what women want... or you think you can revenge your ex by hating women... none of those possibilities is going to work
What, you egg
FIRST
boo.
Any one tried the Troplusfix Dating Secrets (do a google search)? I've heard several awesome things about this popular dating course.
This is a great video, but please stop mispronouncing the word "mischievous"!
What is Troplusfix Dating Secrets? I've heard many awesome things about this popular dating course.
oh no, i don't want you to fulfill my needs, you are bitter and aggressive... but fortunately i know that everybody is different and a lot of men out there are kind, strong and loving, just like many women... be careful not to impregnate any of the dumb girls (seriously, it's better for everyone)!
Romeo and Juliet was horrible, I don't care who wrote it.
Pointless with nowadays women! You'll have a better chance with lil Wayne's rap.
The worst TED ED video?
