      I was with LTL freight company, but driving trucks and not flying. And as well as driving, we also had to "work freight", loading and unloading the trailers. And we did get "items" of freight that was out of the ordinary and interesting all the time. And with the air freight I would imagine the freight to be just as varied if not more so. Items sent on air freight are there because of the need for quick transit. This makes me think of items that could be expensive, rare, of great priority, of high necessity, and in many other ways that made them this item of high priority to ship fast at a higher cost.

      Ryan Padgett at least they could save weight putting in glass and getting rid of vacuum pumps. Might be enough weight saved for an autopilot. I imagine the most weight of the autopilot comes from the trim servos. Are these planes manually trimmed?

      Very few places that fly Metro's have autopilots. Whether cargo or not. Been at 3 different companies with metros. At the current one we have a couple that still have autopilots. Usually when they break though most companies just say "no more autopilot sorry". Not sure if the Metro's is specifically difficult compared to other turboprops.

    So basically, the higher ups don't wanna spend the dollars to bring their aircraft up to current capability and then someone makes video trying to convince us all that it's somehow "better, or safer" with single pilot in congested air space with steam gauges. Stop bro. No need to kiss that bosses ass here.

    • @ldus
      @ldus 5 лет назад +45

      Agreed. In todays day and age of Aviation, there is no excuse for this kind of operation, the technology exists to make things safer and easier for single pilots, use it. And this video really doesn't help, they're trying so hard to sell this job to newbies, but to me this job looks like living hell and honestly scared me a bit.

      There are a few great books about Freight Flying , Freight Dog , A Cargo Pilots Life -Tails From Corrosion Corner stand out. Your comment is rather naive. As long as there are hard core low time Pilots , they will RUN to build time in outfits like this. The bottom line is always money. Is it scary? Sure. But low time or even high time guys love the life and difficulty of this challenge

    I agree and disagree with different aspects of the video.
    I AGREE that this is the best stivk you'll ever be in your career... The FOs I get who come from places like Ameriflight are great pilots.
    I DISAGREE with going single-pilot hard IFR with no autopilot. That is just begging for trouble. Dual crew with no ap, or single pilot with a functioning AP, both completely doable.

    the key lime air midair collision was the best thing that could ever happen to this channel! that aside, so has that pilot been on leave? or is he working again? he had no idea it was a mid air until he landed and went back right - he thought it was just a single engine failure right? another separate topic: i can't fathom how u guys can fly single pilot ifr in bad weather with no autopilot!! are u saying the aircraft literally has ZERO AUTOPILOT, no heading select, no alt hold, NO AUTOPILOT WHATSOEVER? so you're conducting the ENTIRE flight by HAND on the yoke the ENTIRE flight? all while managing radio, charts, checklist, issues, etc. how is that even possible?? i mean i can't comprehend it. even GA pilots have some form of at least basic alt hold, heading hold, so they can take their hand off the yoke for a second.

    Metroliners were not built for single pilot (hence the bleed air switches on the far right and low), but the autopilots have a hard time controlling the massive roll inputs needed against the super sensitive pitch and they aren't MEL-able...so most operators go single, or dual pilot with pax. Love the Metro...but it's a pig, to be sure.

    • @blairansellfraser
      @blairansellfraser 5 лет назад

      @Exuma Guy I should clarify, "it's my opinion that the Metro should be dual pilot" (no offense to single pilots). I flew with 3 operators in Australia, and none of them had MEL-able A/P's (may be an Ozzy reg, or a restriction from the Operator, or a possible connection to the flight controls...I don't know). There have been over 300 incidents/accidents of Metros (NTSB) and considering there were only approx 600+ built, indicates it wasn't the safest of turboprops. Again, I don't know why the bleed air switches are located below eye height, on the FO side, but it has been implicated in at least one fatal crash (single pilot, after T/O at night, YSSY), that I know of. I can't imagine a worse place to put them. Cool aircraft, but Ed Swearingen wasn't the Michelangelo of design and by the time of production it was Fairchild's baby anyway. My opinon only....

    No autopilot is a step too far for me. Single pilot OK, but c'mon, fit an A/P. You only have to buy it once per aircraft
    It looks to me like your airline is:
    a) using up your alertness and capacity as they're too tight to fit an A/P
    b) using you to advertise for more pilots
    It would be safer and better for you to manage the autopilot on the en-route section of your flying, saving your energy and alertness for the more critical stages of flight and preparing you better for the rigours of 2 pilot operations

What's this thing you call an auto what? Mark 12 radios, VOA4 nav heads (when they worked) GPS? What was that? Weather? Well, if you don't want to go, we'll send your last check (all $900 a month on a good month) to you. ADF was the most reliable instrument in the plane (when it worked like nothing else did)
    Did work with a guy that flew the Metroliner 35 yrs ago. 2 pilot op's. He loved it, but NOT a single pilot IFR workload. He's still alive; I'm still alive ... hope you stay that way too.

    I have 23 years in with UPS and am a basic PPL pilot with over 100 hours, I always heard about small companies that did the flights for UPS cargo and bam, here it is for the Colorado area! Unloading is something I did at 17 and 18, crazy as a pilot you have to be the one who unloads. I think I'd rather fly the passengers but that's my own dream and someone has to do the job:)

      @@CommercialPIC Thanks buddy. I just rolled 400 hours yesterday but my plane keeps having break downs which has side lined me. I should already be done with my commercial but life blew up on me last year and I had to stop, still managed to get 200 hours in the last 12 months. My flight school I used has been dropping CFI's left and right to the airlines and they spoke to me about possibly becoming one in the future, we will see. Thanks for the update.

    Solo hand flying is the absolute best way to build and hone your skills as a Pilot.

    The advantage of analog instruments is that you know if you are on-altitude and on-airspeed without directly looking at the instruments. You can see them out of the corners of your eyes without staring at them. Glass altitude and airspeed tapes are always in motion and you have to focus directly on-them to determine if you are in stable flight.

    I'm retired now but I flew contract for a great old Company MedicRx (supply) that since has been gobbled up by a big corporation. I still miss flying freight every day. I don't feel I missed a thing by not moving on. The company was small but extremely well connected, the pay was fantastic, the dedicated routes were few but consistent and I had one boss to answer to. I feel blessed beyond belief after seeing this young man beat his brains out every day loading and flying both. He has my respect for doing it but I pray it's just a time builder. I couldn't imagine that much of a pressure cooker every day. Its a recipe for disater eventually. The fastest rat doesnt always finish the race. Things have changed over the last 30+ years. Did I say how blessed I was? Lol
    Best of luck friend!

      Everyday here in KSBP I would watch Ameriflight taxi out with a load of UPS with the nose strut fully extended wondering if the only thing keeping the plane from going on it’s ass was that the engines were running. Jato on a metro liner😱 that would be something to see. Evergreen had a couple of DC-9 freighters that had jato back in the day.

He is wearing 3 stripes, is sitting in the right seat(No the video isn't mirrored), and single-pilot IFR without either a functional autopilot that is approved under the company's operation specifications or a second pilot qualified under those same OpSpecs under part 135 is ILLEGAL.

    Worked on Metro's for years. The company I worked for at one time was flying 22 of a combination of Metro 2's and 3's. We developed the 4 blade prop conversion to make them quieter and a bit more efficient to get into or challenging northern runways. The older systems were always a challenge to keep in calibration and operating for our crews but I enjoyed the 24 years I did it.

      @@nado411 I have to at least assume at his relatively young age (compared to my old retired from freight hauling ass) that he's building time. If the money and the experience makes him happy I'm fine with his arrangement. He's obviously being at least provided for reasonably. I retired quite a while back from a small CO that got gobbled up by a bigger corporation. Not unusual . Specialized routes get bought out on a regular basis but that was nearly 20 years back. Things have changed and not for the best. I had two dedicated flights a week and I was well paid. From what I'm hearing now that isn't the case anymore. I was home nightly, I had a great boss, I was well connected, well trained and well paid. Unfortunately I know I was an exception not a rule. I know I was blessed beyond belief, but loyal. This young man works his ass off. I give him props for that. Likely single and few responsibilities. You can only live on the ragged edge so long, burning candles at both ends never works out for people in the end. I hope he stays safe and able to fly a long time. I saw many come and go.

    The video description mentions “As a low time commercial pilot you can start as first officer in our Metroliners and later upgrade to captain.” There is nothing single pilot about that. That’s a two pilot operation. Why is single pilot mentioned so many times in the video then? I used to fly passenger Metroliners fur Sun Aire and later SkyWest in the 1980s. They were not certified as single pilot aircraft. It seems you are probably flying some of these very same ex-SkyWest airplanes. The job sounds like it would get super old super quickly after about a week of those sunsets and sunrises and 8 hour mid day breaks!
