      I think they all knew it was the end of the road for them as a band, and so they poured their hearts and souls into that January rooftop performance. Come on, Paul, please release that movie on Blu-ray. Please!

    The interlocking of rhythms in this song, between all instruments (as always), but especially complex here between John and George. And the tone of the guitars, everything is perfect.
    In this video Mike manages a beautiful tone on the tele, very close to the original, so tubey and glassy, just breaking up. Congrats for everything Mike, you are the authority here on YT.

    It's stunningly amazing how you can take as diverse a population as exists on this planet and unite them under one idea , that The Beatles are absolutely the greatest band that ever and may ever exist. That is the true sign of geniuses at work. Right along side, da Vinci, Beethoven, or Einstein. You can take a person that knows nothing about the complexities of music and make them exclaim "WOW, that was beautiful". That's when you know that you have created something of value and significance for the world. Then you have Mike Pachelli, who can very carefully explain how they did it. That is a true master of their music. All the nuances of the craftsmanship in their songs would never be understood if someone like Mike didn't point them out and you begin to understand why the Beatles were the phenomenon that they were.The human ear and brain can tell the difference between a piece of music that was thrown together and one that was crafted with otherworldly talent. How many times has George Harrison brought just the perfect touches as a lead guitarist to a Lennon/McCartney masterpiece. Just the understated presents of his leads throughout the entire portfolio of the Beatles works is testament to his genius of beautifully crafted solos. And Ringo what another understated rhythm and solo artisan, without which the "sound" could have never been the same. His solos stand out as testament to a percussion that is as much a genius as Georges', just the perfect balance of accent and unique taste to carry the song to perfection. It's truly a miracle these four lads were brought together when they were.

      Yes, I agree - talk about a perfect storm. It really is amazing how those particular people were the same age, were growing up in the same place, with the same sense of humour, same taste in music, and with so much talent, imagination and determination. Then, if you throw in Epstein's dedication and the fortuitous meeting with George Martin it becomes even more astonishing. I'm not superstitious, but you have to wonder sometimes. 😀

      Brilliant comment and it bears spelling out, as too many people grossly oversimplify their work. We owe Mike a great debt; his niche knowledge renders him a real scholar of the subject, while his wonder before his subject is utterly contagious. So much for a '3 chord ditty'! Thank you for shining even more light upon the collective genius that originated from Liverpool.

    I've played this before at parties and it typically gets people's attention being as iconic and recognizable a song as it is. But I mostly chunked through it laboriously by ear. Thanks for this post. Now I can perfect the George nuances - especially that middle walk down. I was playing it in a box and unnaturally forced the slides. Your method is more appealing and natural.

  • @bronzesnake7004
    @bronzesnake7004 4 года назад +15

    Awesome, thanks Mike!
    Harrison is my favorite guitar player of all time, and he very quietly stood under the enormous ego shadow of the greatest song smiths of rock n roll and with the main attention diverted away he established himself as an absolute master!
    Even in the early years of the band Harrison was creating incredible main guitar and accompanying chords, riffs, and solos. It will no doubt sound odd, but in my humble, but totally correct opinion "Beatle" George is rock's most grossly under rated guitar player who also wrote some iconic songs while being near invisible!

      Bronzesnake - Thanks and I ABSOLUTLEY agree! The enormously beautiful solo George plays on "Til' There Was You" ALONE is enuff for a guitar player to rest on one's laurels. If you haven't seen it - do have a look at my homage to some of George's amazing guitar playing:

    I love the look on your face at the end when you realise you've actually done the vocals justice.
    Thanks for all these videos, I've learned an awful lot in a short time thanks to you.
    The funny thing is, when Let It be was first broadcast on the BBC in the UK, my elder brother recorded the film on reel-to-reel and it was being constantly played in our house, and the version of this song is the take where John flubs the second verse, singing what sounds like "Oneresrisi gatbibluyigoo" and for years that was the only version I knew (I was about seven, so this really stuck in my mind).
    Anyway, sorry for waffling on and thanks again!

    Mike, grateful to you for the effort you make in explaining the Beatles. I keep discovering more & more & more following your teasing out the subtleties. Thank you. Thank you.
    Always been mesmerised by the chords at 19:40 & 19:55. Why do they move me so much ...???
    Also, if John & Paul "despised" each other so much, why are they enjoying each other with clear affection on the Rooftop? I believed despite all, they all loved each other.
    Thanks again, Mike.

    • @MPfrance
      @MPfrance  5 лет назад +2

      You're welcome and thanks for the kudos.
      Those chords are mesmerizing because the other chords are very plain (root, 3rd, 5th) and even the dominant 7th chords are subtly placed. But that major 7th chord at 19:40 is accented quite rightly.
      I wouldn't say John & Paul "despised" each other. Like any relationship - it has it's ups and downs. Add millions of dollars in to the equation and of course there's going to be tension. The press loves to focus on the negative. Let's focus on the positive - which is the music! And of course they loved each other!!

    That was great Mike. They suerly were geniuses. They sound as good and as fresh today as the day I first heard them back in 1963 when I was in 7th grade.
