    Excellent review. Way too many tech reviewers follow the herd and cover the same damn stuff. You are the first to really go into detail with the audio. Why no one else pays much attention to something I see the vast majority of smartphone users doing(listening to music) probably more than anything else is beyond me.
    In fact, this is the ONLY reason I choose this phone over all others. That it has all these other wonderful features is just icing on the cake.

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  9 лет назад +2

      +schlooonginator I come from a pretty audio heavy background, and I agree. It's super disappointing when other people take stuff like that for granted. I usually won't cover in depth when it's a continued feature, but LG in the past had a rep for TERRIBLE audio, so to see them improve this much in one year meant they were worthy of more detailed examination.

  • @AlanGurling

    Thank you so much for an excellent review. You're the only reviewer that I've come across that has gone into depth with regards to the Audio performance of these smartphones: something which I find unforgivable for every other major reviewer out there.
    The amount of money you pay for a flagship device should deliver! Your comparison in loudness is KEY to a lot of people.
    I totally agree with regards to LG having a poor track record when it comes to audio (anyone who had a Nexus 4 knows what I'm talking about) so it's nice that LG did not skimp on any of the main features of a flagship device.
    The only complaint I have with LG now is that the V10 is only available in the US. I'm based in London and it was just recently hinted that the V10 would be potentially coming from across the pond.
    Again thanks for posting THE review. I've subscribed!

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  9 лет назад

      +Alan Gurling You're very welcome. I think a lot of people gloss over audio because they "all play music, so they're probably all the same". Or the people who think that because Apple used to make iPods that automatically the iPhone must be the best for music and don't bother actually listening. I think it's important to continue discussing this as hopefully we get more high quality lossless consumer options over the next couple years.
      This year was really frustrating for European oversights. The Note 5 still hasn't made a proper splash in the UK either right? I just don't get weird regional exclusives like that.

    I just got my G3 back so I will stick with this for now and wait to see what the G5 or V11 will do. If they improve on this model then I know for sure I won't be disappointed. LG's may have become my favorite phones. I love the buttons on the back and the design of the phones are just very pleasing to me. I never liked the look of the iPhone 6, or any of Samsung's devices but when I seen the G3 it just had my attention. I feel like LG is gonna start killing in the innovative sense. I can't wait to see how they improve each iteration.
    TL:DR I'm excited for future LG phones.

      +Joseph Carrino Just a word of warning. I really like the V10, but the Note 4 was one of my favorite phones of all time. The jump from Note to V might not feel like a tremendous improvement, especially if you use S-Pen alot. If you don't use the stylus, then things like the camera controls and the fingerprint scanner will be more appreciated, but the Note is still a beast of a device.

    LG seriously did it first , they had a hidden notch (where the front cameras are housed ), a dope design (while Huawei did the Porsche design later ), Professionally tuned earbuds in the box , and that LCD version of the always on display ! wow ..!! mad respect . Kinda sad that i missed out on that device , it looks like a device that I would have loved to get my hands on back then .

    Thanks Juan. Yeah, the carrier info in the settings got the talk/text going. It just would not connect to the mobile network. I eventually go connected to 3g, which I was told was really 3G++, by adjusting IMEI number by one digit. 4G or LTE is not possible on the Korean version after looking up the carrier frequencies and numbers.

  • @Mr2pint

    Good review as usual - looks like a solid phone though I'm always disappointed with LG screens being way too low in brightness. I also don't like the second screen at the top think it would be better placed at the bottom. Still looks like a big improvement as you said and those camera controls wow.

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  9 лет назад +1

      +Mr2pint IPS Quantum is better than LCD's used to be, but it's tough not getting overly spoiled by Samsung (and Nokia) OLED brightness modes.
      That said, it's been an easy compromise to make to get the camera controls, storage, build quality, and audio playback. Wow.

    Fun review video. I didn't even realize it was over 15 mins. Subscribed.
    And, on topic, I wanted to get the Xperia Z5 for a long time mostly due to micro sd card slot and the design itself, but the camera reviews aren't too promising. Z5's size was perfect for me, and I wish V10 was also downsized a bit but I have to admit it has a lot of good features to sway me to its side. It's not the greatest looking phone out there, it's huge especially compared to the Nexus 4 I'm using for about 3 years. But 4gb ram, WQHD display and THAT camera should last 3 years comfortably on the market without showing any drawback. Removable battery, additional storage are all great features to have. And LG also added a Hi-Fi sound system. The advantages outweigh the disadvantages by landslide. I'm not too bothered by the LG skin, I guess I could easily put up a custom launcher if I felt like it so no problems there.
    This is the phone to have, and that is my conclusion.

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  9 лет назад +1

      +carbon So I don't put a lot of faith in tech bloggers reviewing cameras. I find most reviewers are actually pretty terrible at objectively weighing pros and cons with optics. That said, Sony has had a pretty miserable track record of producing amazing camera hardware, but saddling their cameras with awful auto modes. The true test of a Sony camera will come down to how it compares in manual shooting opposite Samsung and LG.
      The only areas I'm concerned about the 808 is in gaming. Games will get more demanding fairly quickly. Otherwise, seeing what performance LG was able to crank out of the 808 was very promising for future updates.

    I think this is what the LG G4 should've ben from the beginning. Perhaps, LG realized and decided to make a proper 2015 flagship. Great video, by the way.

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  9 лет назад +1

      +Angel Hernandez I think they needed the time to vet the G4 out in the field. They got burned on the Flex, and most companies are looking at a two tier release strategy. LG now has a good answer for the Galaxy S at the beginning of the year, and a good answer for the iPhone at the end of the year.

    Excellent review as always. I feel compelled to buy this phone, as I have been complaining about phone manufacturers making phones out of "premium" materials, only for me to have cover them with a case. I found myself on the fence between the V10 and the Nexus 6P, but, with the 6P I'd still have to cover the phone. Not to say this is the only reason I think I'll be getting the V10, it simply has great features that I have been looking for. That being said, I still find myself disappointed that it isn't housed in a smaller body.

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  9 лет назад

      +john doe LOL! Yeah. I wish LG would deliver a phone with this build quality and a 5" screen, but the software tweaks and fingerprint scanner location helped a lot. I do actually prefer the G4's size, but I like everything else about the V10, so that's the compromise I need to make right?

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  9 лет назад

      Adjustment period on the V10 was pretty quick. WAY faster than re-learning how to hold the S6 Edge.
      I'll be curious about he G5 too. I'd like to see them merge more of the Flex DNA into the next flagship. Maybe get back to the smaller overall footprint of the G3.
      I think phablets have been finding more success with women, as size matters a little less when you can throw it in a purse.

    Great Review as always +JuanBagnell , I think this might be the best device of 2015, but, I'll have to wait to your Lumia's 950 and 950XL reviews to see if that changes. Now, I wonder why the cinema mode that you show doesn't seem to be that sharp, is the video compressed?

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  9 лет назад +4

      +Gabriel Aguilera The 2K is a lower resolution and bitrate than the UHD to achieve the faster frame rate. It is sharper than 1080p when viewed at full res, but it is being compressed here to fit my 1080p video.

    awesome review! I own the G4 and i really like the phone. but i am so disappointed in the audio quality with the headjack. so this v10 might be worth looking into. i see alot of ppl say the phone is ugly which i disagree. its not the best looking but also not the worst looking either. but my question is should i drop the g4 and go with the v10 or just hang on to? also that fingerprint scanner is another huge + in my book.

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  9 лет назад

      +lamar frazier I've never really understood that. It's in keeping with phones like the Lumia 930 and Note 4. Those are some of my all time favorite phone designs. Plus this design is also practical.
      As for dropping the G4, it's tough because we're talking evolution here. The V10 will be pricier, but if you're really keyed up on biometrics and the better audio, it might be worth it.

    Great review! My only problem with all these reviews, is how everyone keeps comparing absolutely everything to Samsung and Apple flagships. I know they're the leading brands out there and all, but they are also usually more expensive and more "constricted", i.e. no removeable battery and no SD slots.
    I'd be much more interested to see phones like this one being compared to something else at the same pricepoint. Obviously a more expensive phone from a bigger company should outperform a cheaper phone from a smaller company. So for me personally, comparing Huawei and LG would be much more interesting and reasonable, because with the price levels Apple and Samsung are hitting these days, I would frankly be offended on behalf of everyone who owns their products if they didn't have a leg-up.
    But still, this was a fun and snappy review, and I enjoyed it :)

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  9 лет назад

      +Famtastic I think the comparisons are important though simply BECAUSE of the premium that Apple and Samasung place on their products. A customer walking into a store will see an $800 a phone and a $700 phone, so if they want "the bestest" they should get the more expensive phone right? But that's not really the case here is it? Compared to the GS6E+, the V10 wins a number of victories which consumers might care about, but if I only compare it to "cheaper" phones, then consumers will only think it's a "cheaper phone". The V10 punches WAY above it's price tag when compared to Apple and Samsung, and that commentary is important to drive more competition in the market.
      Also my audience might not be as familiar with OnePlus, Huawei, or Xiaomi, so comparing an LG against those directly would be like telling an American they should avoid the Citroen this year and get an MG. They probably won't know what that means.

    Excellent review. What would say to someone who is considering this phone because he very much likes the design and apparent build quality and durability, but isn't really a power user?

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  9 лет назад

      +Ben Skrabak I'm a big advocate for promoting lifestyle features like durability. Even if you don't think youll use the full tech guts of the phone, if you're concerned about the lifecycle of a gadget, why not buy a more durable device. It's why I LOVE the Galaxy S6 Active this year, and I've been a long time fan of Kyocera for their budget and mid-range rugged phones.

    Lg finally went all in and delivered us THE flagship phablet of the power user. The Note line has only one card up it's sleeve, the S-pen, soon to be replaced by great products like the Stilo Pen that works with ALL smartphones. But i have mixed feelings about V10's succes, not because of the hardware or software, but ironically because of the price. Succes means appealing to the masses, not only geeks. The fact that V10 is 150 $ cheaper than Note 5, in our superficial society means that Note 5 is of greater quality and better built. Many people only consider Apple and Samsung as top smartphones manufacturers because of the high price point they sell their devices. Maybe Lg should release smartphones as expensive as Samsung, maybe then they will be able to really change the game. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge fan of the V10, and i'dd choose it over the Note lineup any day, and i'm very happy that they managed to release this phone at that price point. But succes is another story, not always the best hardware/software combo sells, but you bet that the best marketing will always sell (i'm looking at you Apple and Samsung)
    P.S. Stop zooming on the robot's balls Juan, it makes me nervous :))

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  9 лет назад +1

      +Cornel Atomei That's a great point. I look at devices like this, and worry about whether any company has the patience to launch a new product line. I don't think the V10 will explode in sales because it's brand new, and people don't know what it is yet.

      Indeed. I plan to throw on a hoodie and some shades, walk-in and leave in an orderly manner without bumping into a pink shirt. I believe the prices are better online. One other thing about your review-- I was hoping with the fashion statement the white LG V10 is trying to accomplish, you'd kindly throw on some skinny jeans and attempt to shove the "fablet" into your back pocket without a peep.. lol. But seriously though, your long term review of the LG G2 is why I am currently using one as a daily driver.
      As for the differences between Michael Fisher and yourself-- I'll say he is a bit more harder to please. Where as you appreciate the versatility of a product even if a certain function is deemed unnecessary to you. You enjoy the fact that someone else will enjoy that factor. Keep 'em coming.

      Honestly it doesn't matter if I "like" something or not. My usage for mobility is very specific and somewhat atypical. I like to play two games while reviewing.
      1 - Does the product live up to manufacturer claims?
      2 - Who is this product for?
      Where my reviews veer more negative or critical are when I have difficulty answering one of those questions.

    • @love-luislam8687
      @love-luislam8687 9 лет назад

      +JuanBagnell Therein lay the unbiased aspect to your reviews. I do appreciate the pov of reviewers with different lifestyles, but I find many spoiled to the likes of flagship standards.
      Alongside my G2 I use a Lumia 640 with MetroPCS (I'd love to see your review.. see Mattias Burling's..). I feel this product was aimed towards someone like me- love a good bang for buck product. It's not the best at anything but it does everything good. And I'm viewing the LG V10 just as you mentioned it to be in regard.
      I mean c'mon now, I used to purchase Sony Xperia's for their advancements with audio profiling and Lg just hit a home run with this unit. I also delve in some acoustical engineering as a hobby and tuning material on-the-go with a phone is a nice perk.
      I was unable to get a good feel in the hand because of the security tag, but size does not seem to be an issue now. The home buttons are a tad large and battery life is not up to par for the size of the phone, however I am realistic. The unit is heavy enough with the 3000mah and it is removable. The price in-store is the same as their website.
      Thanks for the review of this unit. I will wait to order one with another day of internet investigation due the fact there seems to be an issue with the fingerprint scanner with a cover on.

    Thank you so much for the review and the review on the Hi-Fi of the V10!
    Hi-Fi to me is a HUGE deal because I never bought an amp for my phone so that it could power my M-Audio Q40's and I could never get the full effect out of my headphones.
    I'm EXTREMELY happy to hear that the V10 will do a better job powering my headphones then my HTC ONE M7 does right now. I'm glad to see those stupid shrill highs and muddy lows will be removed.
    I think I have decided to get this phone over the Note 4 edge just based off the audio component.
    Btw, I like your V-Moda Crossfades. I never got the chance to use them but they look and probably sound amazing. The ironic thing is that my brother sees no difference between headphones or ear buds other than isolation.
    Again great review!
    I have one question however.
    Do you use an amp for your headphones and if you don't do you notice a huge impact when using them with the V10?

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  9 лет назад

      +Dave ThaBoss I really like the crossfades. Really solid cans, and their swap-able cable helps customize the experience. I like ear buds and cans, it's all about the right fit and what qualities of audio you're looking for.
      I have not ever used a mobile amp for music. I know people who swear by them, but I've just never enjoyed the idea of carrying around a separate deck.

    • @DaveThaBossDTB
      @DaveThaBossDTB 9 лет назад

      JuanBagnell Oh you are saying the customizable cable changes the listening experience? I thought that was impossible...
      My only issue with smart phones was that they never have enough power to "drive" the headphone. Even though my Q40's are burned in (I actually "heard" the difference immediately once they got burned in) my phone just can't power them efficiently and I end up having to turn the volume up higher.
      I agree with you though. I find it stupid carrying an amp around all the time.

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  9 лет назад

      Dave ThaBoss
      Not the audio quality, but the usage scenarios. You can share audio with one cable, use another for more of a traditional phone headset. Their gamer headset mic is excellent, and the pro cable is super durable and fantastically shielded.
      The quality of the cans doesn't change, but it makes the headphones more versatile.

    • @DaveThaBossDTB
      @DaveThaBossDTB 9 лет назад +1

      JuanBagnell I see what you're saying... You just reminded me something! I need to go and buy a cable with a mic for my headphones. I've been needing one for when I go on PSN after work.
      I'll probably get one next week right after I get the V10. I must admit though, that phone looks HUGE. I'm hoping my small hands don't make me look like a toddler holding a remote.

      The megapickle thing has been an inside joke on this channel for a while. If you find my potato review you'll see some REALLY tasty ULTRApickles!

      +MagicGuitara I honestly don't know. I think LG just wanted to provide different options for different styles.

      +David Marte My Stilo! I like this little pen. Pricey, but one of the better capacitive styluses I've tried. ruclips.net/video/RribQ_eVysY/видео.html

      +jessy “jessymgarcia” Garcia That was a little bit of a bummer, but at least it shows they were trying to address how thick the phone was.

      +JuanBagnell yeah true..but eveb so..the g4 doesnt look thick because of the curve back..great it still has a bigger screen and it has little better battery life than the G4.great improvement.Great review..i would get this phone only for the HI-FI sound.
