This film destroyed me in beautiful, and painful ways....best film in 25 yrs.....so so so powerful/beautiful.......see it..
n ot even nominated...just the old standard stuff was.....
Me too
Me too. It took me days to shake off some of the dark clouds over me after watching it. The way it ends brought me into a lot of pain d reflection about how we die everyday.
"You looked at me and I knew" so much meaning in such a short, simple sentence.
Man, rewatching this brings back all of the emotions that I felt the first time. I'm gonna go cry in a corner now, brb.
This movie was existential to me Perspective changing. There are a lot of movies that wanna pretend to turn over a new stone in your head but you can see right through them. This movie feels like it comes from the place so many pretend to.
Described as a "cathedral of the senses". I can't tell you how many times I have watched the trailer because it lives up to the description. A Hidden Life got a 10 minute standing ovation at Cannes in 2019. August Diehl is a huge talent who works with the best directors in the world, yet hes such a kind and gracious gentleman based on the interviews. Valerie Pachner has the most beautiful and striking eyes I have ever seen and I bet you anything Malicks camera loved them. All that and I haven't seen it yet because I have to wait till its on bluray. I am so looking forward to that. Thanks for sharing SearchlightPictures
I'm so glad I saw this on the big screen. Top tier Malick.
There is a difference between seeing it in theater and on your computer. 👍🏻
#PowerOfCinema
I think I saw it at least 3x in theatres. One of the last films I saw in theatres before COVID.
Incredible! A must see. Family, convictions, standing for one's faith, character and convictions. The scenery was spectacular.
Looking forward to this, the cinematography has a unique feel to it
it has that quintessential Terrence Malick style for sure
@@GraciRant Interesting. I've never watched any of his films before
@@FirstnameLastname-hq5rd yea you should they are all pretty well done
i saw it around a month ago, it is overly long, but immensely satisfying and emotionally exhausting. great film
@@Jan-kc2yk You're lucky! I've looked all around but there are no theatres in my city (or neighboring ones) showing this film. Can't wait to see it.
Cannot wait for this. Drove me insane waiting months for this after it's initial screening.
Let me guess you committed suicide because it was the only way you could get this movie you waited so long for to end?
One of the greatest films I have seen.
I saw this at a film festival a month ago - it got my in tears in the final act three separate times. Absolutely can't wait to rewatch this magnum opus in theaters on a wide release!
Wow! When is it gonna be released worldwide?!!?
A spiritual masterpiece for all time.
I'll never tire of this beautiful film
My wife and I went to see this movie. It was AWESOME! It was 3 hrs long but my wife never fell asleep during the entire showing. The movie will live with you for a very long time. MUST SEE.
the music is absolutely sublime
Been waiting for this ever since i saw the trailer.I got overwhelmed by the cinematography and composition of music was heavenly.I can't fathom how they overlooked this.Guess, good movies ain't recognized anymore.
Oh God. I'm currently in Austria and I wish this film was originally in the German language. But still, the English language cannot ruin it at all. Terrence Malick knows how to create a masterpiece. Period.
I saw the movie here in Los Angeles about a week ago. The film alternates between German and English. You would think the effect would be jarring, but it works. In general, the movie is extraordinary. It could use a bout a half-hour cut from the last hour. But over all, it's incredibly powerful.
Servus!

It's interesting that the film was cast with German actors but they went with English. There's a pretty significant amount of dialogue in German though, which wasn't subtitled. I wonder what Malick's thinking was behind that decision.
@@MichaelPolios Notice how it's english when they are saying something that's main dialogue, and German when it's the background talking, at that point, the words being spoken are more about the look and feel than the actual dialogue. It makes a lot of sense because subtitles keep you from watching the art
Easily one of the finest movies I've ever seen, one can get the beauty right away (thanks Terrence). But the underlying meaning
is another matter, an important teaching, take a year or so and then realize You have just begun.
And it wasn't even nominated for best cinematography or best soundtrack...shitty Oscar.
The soundtrack of this movie is the best in the history of cinema. 👍🎻
What happened guys? Seriously why don't we live like this anymore?
I'd love to live like this
You can. You have to break free from the norm. Also you see how much hard work it is... relentless hard work. We traded this type of life for comfort

Masterpiece and unforgettable
I saw this in October at the Virginia Film Festival and my god it was incredible! Worth holding in my bladder for 3 whole hours lol!
I'm glad you enjoyed that sappy bullshit where one meaningless and repetitive scene flowed into the next. Hopefully you convinced someone to see that filth. Misery loves company.
@@glenswift9449 It's almost as if movies are completely fucking subjective? Crazy, right?
In all seriousness though... people *will* react differently to movies. Just because you didn't personally connect with it does not mean others aren't allowed to. What you consider to be "meaningless and repetitive" can just as easily be sincere and profound to another.
@@glenswift9449 I'm glad you're showing everyone how shallow and narrow minded you are, we will be careful so as not mingle with the likes of you in the near future. I'd very much like to be happily miserable on my own than to have someone like you in my midst.
I found the film to be very potent, Malicks "style" feels much more similar to The Thin Red Line, as opposed to his more recent efforts. And as far as cinematography, score, and acting are concerned it's the best of the year for me.
I'm so glad Terrence Malick dropped the "experimental" movies and went back to this. The New World is seriously underrated, and given how the Academy completely ignored this one, I fear it will be, too.
Experimental is fine, and those films had many great sequences. But they were worse for those tendencies
The new world is a beautiful film. Malick is another level as a filmmaker. His movies have a sense of realness, depth and soul to them. I can’t explain what it is. It’s like he draws you into really feeling what the characters are feeling and doing. Almost like you are not watching a movie at all. The thin red line is my favorite by him. The opening of that film is so beautiful and so tragic at the same time. And there’s still 2 1/2 hours to go. Amazing filmmaker.

Yep this is a Terrence Malick movie alright
The musical score, cinematography, and acting seem heavenly at best.

The Tree of Hidden Life
that would be too epic for us to witness.
Really extraordinary. About inner choices, we face each day too
Saw this movie last night - a Masterpiece. Amazing journey and an emotional journey of epic proportions. I left the Theater, like many others, in silence, as though I had experienced a moment in Cinema. The Only other time I have felt that way after watching a movie, was Schindler's List. a Hidden Life is stunning, with breathtaking scenery; it is an eternal story of good versus evil and the overwhelming power of Love to endure the greatest of all sufferings, even death, to reach beyond and into another dimension. Amazing! Brilliant! Captivating! Spectacular! Few words can capture its powerful message. This is a Must See film by a Master...GO SEE IT. It should be, hands down, the Best Picture at the Oscars in 2020.

I apologize, I sincerely ask, what is it you mean? Is Austria facing a tough time right now?
@@gregoryandrus5322 It really isn't, we have a pretty cool new government which combines a liberal and conservative party. No huge scandals and we arent really hit by climate change yet. Compared to other countries we have it really good!
@@gregoryandrus5322 gregory we have some special awful far rightwinged people again, young people who do not celebrate our liberation but complain about the occupation which was very soft - except in the easter austrian soviet zone. America granted us the 2nd highest amount of marshall's plan. but this wealthy people rather mourn for heroes like "franz nowotny" and claim he would have defended our country so magnificently. we're talking about 25 to 30 percent of the voters and another 20+ percent who do not have a solid opinion. their party was involved to the government 2017-2019. "fortunately", a huge scandal ended this coalition. but the responsible chancellor from the middle right conservative party was voted again into office and he is very sad that this "best for austria!" collaboration failed. our chancellor said terrible things like "awful pictures are needed to prevent us from more refugees". But unfortunately you hear the same words from Australia! Donald trump has strongly favored this peoples mood, who said the same things. Austrian rightwinged people listen carefully and it make them feel motivated. Of course there is the big problem that every folks in the world celebrates its "heroes". Other countries in west and east would have helped us a lot if they stopped doing that. For ex. the british would have helped us a lot. "Why should we regret and they remain militarists" young people say. "they constantly congratulate themselves on being better people who don't have to question themselves" our young people claim. As a protest they react to it by recidivism their perspective on our own heinous crimes. That's ugly but it always takes two. It would have needed a second in the allies who does not celebrate his victory again and again and again. One has no expectations of Russia and China but America has promised that after 1945 we will build a better world together. A civil world of course. Instead America has established a military culture that is similar to old Prussia. The prussian military culture was the root of all evil and not hitler as an single agitating person.Prussia was a carnival of uniforms. The military became a social pillar. The rank played a major role in partner choice and career. This mentality led to "Third Reich".That is exactly what is going on in America and it serves as a convenient excuse for many people here. "You are not allowed to, because you have committed terrible crimes" it can be said. But that's not how people work, they orientate themselves on the role models of the present. However, we are talking about a high level. Austria looks after a very, very large number of refugees. They are doing very well and no costs are spared to support raped Yezidi women and other victims of torture with best (world top) therapy. There is no racist violence in Austria, literally no except in words. Of course, one shouldn't downplay the violence of the words. We have nothing to reproach ourselves for when it comes to the facts, the other 50+ percent people take care of that. But not our chancellor. Our government and its voters wants to hinder the helping people in Austria. Of course America is being criticized because the demands on our democratic leadership country are very high. Of course, we lucky ones have no right to do so. This also applies to the british who themselves suffered by the war (our criminal war and unbelievable massmurder) did their best for us in their zone (Styria). With a forgiving attitude that we didn't deserve. Excuse my english, if needed. I am happy that some Jews are coming back to vienna, reviving the strongly jewish identity of my city. Jews gave this city its former importance that shines to this day. Not only the first, second and third vienna school of psychiatry.
This has "The Village" vibes with the music.
I thought it was great just for the scenery and depiction of traditional European culture, regardless of the plot or message. Now I want to hike through the Alps.

Stunning movie but the only thing that bothered me as a German. And i watch movies in their original language, sometimes with subs. Because of the lip-sync and authenticity.
But they filmed that movie with 95% Germans in English and dubbed it back to German. Thad made some scenes really odd. I understand why they this. But come on, it's a german/austrian story and the authenticity gets a little bit away.... I would have liked it much more if it was filmed in German and later dubbed in English.
what piece of music is this?
A hidden life, its original from the movie and has the same title
hellllppp.. where can i download ds movie.. pls hlp😫
They speak English in Austria? Funny. I didn't know that.
This is true, cultural imperialism (or marketing capitalism) of Hollywood and its imaginary-industrial-complex is an old hat, a vulgar practice to reduce foreign cultures to "background noice", that's been done since the early days of talkies. But this is Terrence Malick! A man who speaks German, who even translated Heigegger once, Heidegger who said "Language is the house of being. In its home human beings dwell." I was expecting more from him. My mistake. If you are fine wiht this, suksi sitten vittuun, saatanan saappaanuolija, perkeleen peräänantaja.

The beauty of white life.
What’s the movie about? If it’s foreign and they speak English, its gonna piss me off
Watching this for 3 hours felt like a torture. Outstanding cinematography, yes, but wasted on the glorification of utterly stupid hero character. As a family man, the decision making process of this guy is just unbelievable, complete oposite of what humans should glorify or romantize. So wrong, on so many levels.
Disagree
Strongly disagree. If you’re focused on the world, sure. But he looked to the higher things, and followed his good conscience.
I love Malick and will see this as soon as possible, but so many of these shots feel recycled from his past films. I've always defended him from those who accuse him of treading water for the past ten years, but this clip doesn't seem to prove them wrong. Also, his themes of searching for answers, looking to God, etc. appear to be far more literal here. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I'm cautiously optimistic this time around.
Saw it. Not worth 3 out of four stars.
Come on...
Oh great, another Malick opus the more pretentious critics can verbally fellate, several hours of lovely and ultimately boring as Hell pictures of mountains and clouds in combo with excruciatingly dull voice-overs of the character's inner thoughts and feelings. I'm so looking forward to skipping it.
Dont listen to the guy above you. It is in fact still that boring ass shit and it goes on slower than any other malick film due to its 3 hour run time. There is a story yes but real plot points hold about 15 minutes total and thats it. I couldnt sit through this movie
Looks pretty lame
Ummmmm no
There's poetry in it, you have try n understand to appreciate it
Sahil Binder I live in Europe, you have to understand, the beautiful scenery is normal, there needs to be a storyline.
@@GuyOnTwoWheels that's what I said, it's a story which is depicted in a poetic way, it's not about scenery it's about the emotions which the movie holds. Don't take me the wrong way.
And what's Europe like, I've never been there
Sahil Binder Europe is awesome, I’ve been living in Germany for 12 years now, I’ve got 12 more to go until I move back to the states. I’m curious about this movie though, there has to be more to apply to just showing people living. Switzerland is my favorite country here, there are towns in the mountains were cars are not even allowed.
