Sad, but important video. Shows how quickly things can go from OK to bad to worse. So sad that Ron passed but I am amazed at the will and strength his wife had to survive those 9 days. Safe flights and travels.
27 years LEO, I attest that the "Mike Pateys" in our community contributed greatley to successful missions. Many times, the donatons of time, treasure, and talent from the private citizen supporters make it all come together. Heartbreaking story.... you are a hero, as is everyone on the recovery team. Thank you!
Saw Dave’s portion of this video. I’ve spent the last 3 decades helping others and have much respect for this aspect of your life and others that help. Well honestly I respect everything you do. Especially your work ethic. Thank you for being you. Back to work.
As a first responder, I've done a few rescues over the years, some tragic and others safe returns. The reason I subscribed to your channel Mike is because of the resue work you've done over the years. Glad to see that network getting even bigger with a much broader range of options. Definitely a bitter/sweet story, but success none the less.
Makes you realize how vulnerable we all are to circumstances. The Duramax quitting drove that point home. But it's so incredible to see what humans can do for each other. Serious respect for you guys, your work ethic, and the love you show in action.
Thank you for making Bev and Ronnie the center of this video. Thank you for not just making it about you, and promoting how great you are. This video honored Bev and Ronnie and really did justice to the family's loss.
I'm as tough as they come....but I ain't gonna lie, I got a little misty eyed when I was listening to the nephew's story. As a first responder, not being able to save them all is hard, but at least he went peacefully. My condolences to the family....they are in my thoughts and prayers. Kudos to you, Mike for being an amazing man. Dave Sparks and his entire crew are great people too....it's good to see ya'll working together, like modern day super heroes. God bless you all.
This is truly a heartbreaking story but also a great reminder on how dangerous this stuff can be, I’m glad the family got closer and I’m glad there stuff was returned, thank you mike for this video I would love to see more of this type of vid. Rest in piece Ron. ❤️❤️❤️
I am in aviation (Crew not pilot) and have been reading a lot about the “Enroute Decision Point” concept, the idea that if you encounter weather conditions that cause you to slow down or lower altitude below where you normally would cruise at you need to make a decision to land, turn around to good weather or do an instrument approach at an airport if possible. I was just thinking this can apply to traveling on roads, even if you are planning to off road you should have a pre decided condition or set of conditions that if you or those your are with encounter them it’s time to stop and re-asses what you are doing. I’ve been in a situation trying to get somewhere that my vehicle is not capable of getting to, thankfully I made the right decision to turn around when I still could but just like Mike said, I made a series of small decisions leading up to that where I could have very well ended up stranded. The two videos Dave and Mike have done on this are so valuable to drive this point home, thanks guys!
Sad situation, but an absolutely sensational effort on the part of all. I am 66 years old and the wife and I are preparing for a bit of Arizona backcountry exploring in our Honda Talon. Suffice it to say that this video inspires me to do everything I can to prepare us and our vehicle for the possibility of extended stay and unexpected situations, i.e. extra water and food, extra fuel, emergency shelter, tools, winch, multiple radios, spare wheel/tire and spare parts. As always, thanks again for sharing and thank you for the dedicated service you embody. Steve
That was tough to watch, at times. I can’t imagine being in their shoes. So tragic. It’s incredible that you guys utilized your resources and manpower to assist when nobody else would. Great work!
By far one of your most moving and surreal depictions of reality, sadness and grief and truly heartfelt and sincere emotions are felt on this end as well… What wonderful efforts the combination of your two groups show and prove to the world and the things that are possible when properly thought out and executed as two teams unite as one in my hope and dream is is that our nation will do the same one day.. 🙏🏻😉😉👍❤️🇺🇸
Doing search and rescue was a coordinated adventure for me the first time out on a search until you come upon a casualty then that big and I mean big knot that you have in the pit of your stomach that your choking down to maintain a professional appearance and when that pit that you have been choking down for the last however many hours can’t be choked anymore rears up……. It’s one of the most humbling things I’ve ever been part of that you hate but at the same time is the most rewarding incredible thing when it all goes right thank you mike for your commitment to search and rescue wish more were like you our world would be that much better enough rambling God Bless be Safe
I spent 22 years running up and down the highways of North America and I only mention that because it reminds me of how many opportunities I had for things to go very badly. It is very sad to consider the circumstances of Ronnie Barkers passing and yet he spent his final hours on earth at peace, with his mate and his faith. While I did enjoy Daves video of this journey I greatly appreciate Mikes more in depth look into the people involved and the circumstances of their stranding. RIP Mr Barker and thank you for your service.
A lot of what you see here can easily be applied to aviation. A series of innocuous decisions can lead to a catastrophic outcome. I appreciate you and all the people in search and rescue who work tirelessly to save people who find themselves in these predicaments.
Holy crap, they are from my area. I remember seeing all the local stations here in Indy talking about it. Small world to see you were one of the folks involved in the search for them. Bless you MP.
This 1 hits home to me. I have done search and rescue from the air in Idaho numerous times and when the weather was bad and the family couldn't get anyone else to search from the air. Was I breaking the reg's maybe? but we do bring closure for the family's. Every time we bring closure for a family it really does change you as a person and it changes your perspective on life. Great job and keep doing what you do hopefully someday we will cross paths!
There was not a story about Scrappy or Draco that moved me like this one. When he told the story of her mentioning all the jets that were flying over just imagining all those people on board, none aware 2 people were dying below that did it. By the time he got to him passing away, I'm a grown ass man but I was boo hooooing like a little baby. You all are out there doing GOD'S work Mike. God bless you and thank you for this. I'm also a US Air Force Vet....thank you for your service sir (silent salute to the victim)
I can't tell you how cool this is ... what you guys did. I just drove through that area up Hwy 95 in my motorhome and trailer. I know what that back country is like. My wife and I are in our late 70's so can relate to Ronnie and Beverly and getting into a situation like that. I know how a GPS can lead you in a direction you should not or do not want to go. This was so sad but happy that Beverly is recovering and has family to get her home to Indiana with the motorhome and car. You guys are terrific.
Mike - What you guys do is awesome. I joined a Search and Rescue Team in Rapid City, South Dakota in 1991 and had to quit over a year ago during the Covid pandemic because of my job working with Aircrew. I see what you are feeling and have been there multiple times. But it was a great feeling of giving closure to families and that is what kept me going. I want to tell you Thanks!
Every once in while there is put on this earth people who are angels. You and Dave are two of them. Doing something for nothing in this world is almost gone. Keep up the good work and God Bless.
Bless you Mike, Dave and the team whose generosity and selfless community spirit to help Beverly and her family recover the RV And being able to assist in getting Beverly home. Thank you, you have touched our hearts.
Wow, the teamwork was tremendous. I have watched your videos for 2 years and had just started watching their videos. My wife and I are 76 and travel in the West a lot. We carried our SPOT locator with us in our Bonanza for 29 years in case of the unimaginable. Now on the ground, we still carry our SPOT in case we run out of options on a road no one is traveling on. We have hit the OK button to our kids and they call to make sure we really are OK! So far, so good!
Really a sad situation for this couple😮💨...I have a few thoughts about this BUT maybe later on that...... GREAT thing to help recover the rig ! Thanks to all and my best to the relatives of this couple.
Mike, what you and the gang did, right there, was absolutely life changing to someone in their darkest and most dire time of need... so... Speaking as one human to another, from the heart, thank you for doing that.
As an old Saudi Arabia Desert hand I can appreciate how easy it is for things to go pear shaped . I also know how important it is to always have plenty of water to hand. Ditch those fizzy cokes and just have H20 . Great job by your recovery team. Regards, Jim in NI UK
Blew a tire out in the mountains looking for wood, 10 miles later I got back home, felt like a run over dog the next day. Was really happy to have all my maps on gps essentials. I would have been lost without them.
There are some lessons to be learned from this video. Thanks for telling the story from the Search and Rescue/Recovery perspective. It is the "grace of God" that this woman survived. Thank you, Mike.
Thank you Mike. I volunteer with the local Sheriffs departments for search and rescue of backcountry snowmobiles, skiers, hikers, winter sports, etc. You guys get the picture. I’ve been involved with a couple of these unfortunate circumstances. It’s difficult for sure, but the two fatalities I’ve been a part of, the families were so thankful to at least have their family members back and to lay them to rest properly. Thank you for sharing and be safe and SMART out there everyone.
As a former LEO, I love this type of video. It is always sad when the outcome is not has you had hoped, but this is very important for others to see what is involved.
Thank you Mike for sharing this story. It was heartbreaking to watch through the tears. Beverly is an amazing lady. Her strength to carry on touched me very deeply. My thoughts and prayers are with her and the rest of her family. And with you and you're family Mike.
Heartbreaking story.. thanks for all you do Mike, and to the whole team here. Anyone who travels in the wilderness (or really.. anyone doing road trips where you will be out of cell phone range for a while, or could get lost like this) should really consider a satellite device like the garmin inreach mini or similar. They are so cheap and compact these days, and so useful in non-emergency situations, I really think it’s a great investment.
I was thinking along the same lines. I've used the OnStar sat phone in my car a couple times when out of range of a cell tower. Another consideration is to take plenty of food and water! Even MREs. You never know ...
@Phil Grindle Yep, agree! It's easy to get complacent and over-reliant on a car. Even a relatively short drive on familiar roads in the winter can turn bad pretty quickly if something goes wrong. 👍
I hope the woman fully recovers physically and mentally. It´s amazing what you guys do - it´s not just recovering a vehicle, it´s helping others, no questions asked. Great job and even greater attitude of all you guys. Also amazing to watch is this extraordinary genius named Mike Patey being "just" part of a bigger team who really get their hands dirty in heat and sand. Really moving.
I am thankful for people like you who are willing to stop what they are doing to help others in need. My time in the USAF was not a flying position but I would volunteer to fly SAR's with the HC-130 Sq at my base. I spent several years as a civilian doing SAR work with the USAF Aux. performing Flight line duty. Since the 1980's I have kept the USAF SAR motto as my own, "That Others May Live" I have USAF, Commercial Flight line duty experience. IF I ever get the chance to visit your State I hope to volunteer to help and work with you if the need arises. Let me know, In my book there is no greater calling to to help others. May God continue to Bless you Mike, your Family and friends.
This is an important lesson for alot of folks that use RV's to travel into rough terrain for any reason. You should not go where your vehicle was not designed to. I remember seeing this one on the news and it was sad then as it is now. Love that you guys were a part of this one Mike, you and Sparks did a great job on the recovery.
Thanks Mike for showing us all the other side of your life. You have your business and your planes but this shows what you and your buddy’s also do to help others. People just don't realize what these rescues and recovery's mean to those affected, it's humanity at its best all pulling together. We need more of these story’s to bring it home.
I followed my gps down a road going to the garden of the gods in southern Illinois. It didn’t look official but started down it anyway. After a few curves thought there is no way this is the road I am supposed to take. Went one more slight curve just In case it had a way to turn around. I came across a car that hung up up in the ruts in the rock road trying to turn around. Got them unstuck finally and drove backwards back out. Only about quarter to half mile and only in southern Illinois but it doesn’t take much to get in bad. They could have walked out ok more than likely and may have had cell coverage but still could have ended up worse. I bought an Inreach for flying mainly but always have it in my car. I have vacationed in Death Valley a couple of times and other places with little to no cell phone coverage. It gives me good piece of mind that can help in situations like this one. Love you videos!
Its good tp see youtubers getting together and doing good for their and our communities. We are all better because of them and we can push ourselves to give back ourselves. Life isn't perfect or are the outcomes but we are grateful that someone cared.
You're and incredible person, you have done things like this countless times and this just happens to be the one you share with us. Thanks for all you do for aviation and recovery missions, I appreciate you sir!
Definitely a stark reminder of how things can go south before you know it. The nephews story broke me. So sad. Thankful she survived and that they had their faith.
I'm voiceless. And I also cried. Thank you for this unpleasant video. I'll still have faith in the human kind as long as people like you live on earth.
Thank you so much for sharing such a honest version of this story. To see you moved by the walker paints such a beautiful picture of how emergency responders feel in so many situations. It is not that we are immune to the tragedy, it is that we are fueled by being able to leave the situation better than we found it.
A handheld emergency locator transmitter for anyone hiking or traveling off road should be mandatory. A personal ELT is not just for pilots, they are conveniently small, allow your family can track your progress and some have a texting feature. The most important feature is of course transmitting your GPS coordinate to a satellite which will relay your position to a search & rescue unit to come and get you.
Thank you Mike for all you do, not only for search and rescue things like this, but for the Aviation community in general. The world needs more people like you and your family with the commitment to human service.
This is a great story in the sense that the average folk does not understand what happens after the fact. The independent professionals that do this kind of work = This is a great way to introduce the behind the scenes of the work involved - Thank you to the crew may you all continue to be safe helping others and please have the time of your life - We have no do overs only one.
Great video showing how real a situation that looks normal goes off the tracks. Thank you to all the SAR and recovery teams. This is important work and important lessons. The video was also very tastefully edited.
People, PLEASE keep 3+ days food and water in every car/truck when heading out of town... even your tow vehicle !!! Mountain House meals are good for years and years and easy to make. Me... I always keep a 36+ case of water (SUV) and my grab n go bag with a week+ of food n snacks for 2 ppl. Stay Safe use your head and stay alive !!! My kids... are watched 😁👍 These folks had everything... I'm 66 and avid Mountain Man and I have had my share of "Oh Thank God" you came along...
Hey Mike. I just want to say my condolences to the family that had a loved one pass and to let you know o never stop doing what you do, you are the reason I log into RUclips every day
Excellent video showing what most don’t realize has to happen after a tragedy. I worked 5 years in air ambulance, and now 21 years so far in law enforcement. I’ve seen what you’ve seen, both happy and sad. These things take a huge emotional toll on those that walk the walk. I’m sure you’re well aware on the importance of a good debrief, and I’d be happy to help. Seeing the pain in your eyes with the walker. Dang. For me, it’s the shoes. Always seeing the shoes.
Sad situation but on a side note it's good to see two of my favorite crews standing up when everyone else stood down. "You'll know them by their works." I love good people!
Most people have no idea what its like living off the grid. Its not a easy thing to do and its difficult to find someone who can help. In most cases you have to do it yourself and if you don't make it its not good.
You know what Mike we all see you play hard ( building your beautiful aircraft ) but genuinely your work ethic and need to push on is truly inspirational.. no one gets anywhere in this world standing still and you are a true figure to that.. keep pushing forward and keep bringing help to those who need it most.
I have been watching this channel for several years now and I am always Impressed by the things you have done with your aircraft builds and the search and rescue work as well. I am praying for the family and hope for the wife's speedy recovery.
Thank you for helping the Barker family. I’m grateful that there are amazing people willing to assist when asked, to provide assistance for those in need. Our prayers remain with Bev and her family.
Thank you for being you Mike and thank you for taking us along on your journeys. I am so proud to that we have so many people in our awesome Utah community like you and your family and Dave and his whole team who are willing to lend a helping hand. You guys absolutely rock!
It's really nice to see there's still A LOT of good in this world! Even if this is a very sad story it's nice that there are people still out there who'd do pretty much anything to help people in need! Thank you for all your amazing work, you guys are true heroes! 🙂❤
Remarkable story/vlog of the recovery. Hats off to Mike ,HD,DD and the rest of those wonderful folks that provided the needed assistance to the family in such an unfortunate time. The cross that D.D. placed was a sweet and meaningful gesture.
Thank you so much for all you do! Amazing to watch you and everyone pull together for that family in a rough time. On a side note, love the TRX! God bless Mike and thanks for showing us this!
Sad, but important video. Shows how quickly things can go from OK to bad to worse. So sad that Ron passed but I am amazed at the will and strength his wife had to survive those 9 days. Safe flights and travels.
It's sad that he passed but it's good he's not suffering or in pain, he's watching over those whom he calls family, the loved ones
"Look for the helpers"-- Mr. Rodgers Mom
In the eyes of these spiritual people, you guys are angels.
This was my father,it was a heartbreaking infuriating situation waiting to get help finding them. I thank you for doing your part sir!
Mike - thank you for consistently demonstrating leadership - in all things.

I almost skipped this one. I had no idea how much I needed to see this video until I saw it. Thanks again, Mike, for sharing.
On behalf of the gentleman that passed away I like to thank and bless all involved in the recovery. You are all amazing. Thank you

Thank you for what you do Mike as a SAR Manager in British Columbia, Canada I know what you and the rest of the team were going through.
I live in BC and thanks Shayne glad we have you here
I finally did it... Signed up for starting my PPL course. Thanks Mike for being one of my inspirators.
That was tough to watch, at times. I can’t imagine being in their shoes. So tragic. It’s incredible that you guys utilized your resources and manpower to assist when nobody else would. Great work!

You all are true heroes for helping out a family in desperate need. A family your don't even know. God Bless each and every one of you.
Sad Story but glad you shared it.

A very touching story. It is so nice to know that there are people like you who are prepared to go to no end of trouble to help when it is needed.
Wow that was very emotional! Thank God for the Patey’s and others like them. God Bless you all.
When I grow up I want to be Mike Patey.
I'm in my 50's, but it's never too late to grow up, is it? You are an inspiration, Sir.
I did Fire/EMS for 32 years....recoveries are never easy but it is part of it....Thanks for your effort to help a Hoosier Family.....Back To Work 💪
Prayers to the Barer family. I have a renewed respect for Dave and his crew, thanks to you Mike! God bless you all!!!!

This is absolutely heartbreaking. I pray for this family and Thank God for people like you that go above and beyond everyday to help people in need.
I have run across these types headed into trouble with motor homes. They sometimes get pissy when I suggest they turn around. SMH
Thank you, Mike and Dave. God Bless you all, Beverly and her family.
Thank you and all your team for the work you do. “Baby steps into trouble” has to be the instructional line of this video.
Mike, Dave and their teams are true examples of good hearted people. God Bless everyone of you.
God bless you, Mike.
And everyone else with you, too.
Agreed. I have one. Just for the fact I go solo in my Jeep 90%of the time. It 26 a month but it’s value is priceless.
Thank you Mike and Diesel Bros for all you do! Truly amazing and thank you for sharing this story with us.
prayers to the family and to all involved... proud of you all for doing what you do ... cheers from Canada
So sad they weren't found sooner, a huge thank you to everyone who helped bring them home
Thx for sharing MP... I know it was tough for you guys, and if you don't get the recognition here, the big guy will remember! Take care!
Most people have no idea what its like living off the grid. Its not a easy thing to do and its difficult to find someone who can help. In most cases you have to do it yourself and if you don't make it its not good.
This was such a "real" video, thanks for sharing it and for what you do to give back!!!
You know what Mike we all see you play hard ( building your beautiful aircraft ) but genuinely your work ethic and need to push on is truly inspirational.. no one gets anywhere in this world standing still and you are a true figure to that.. keep pushing forward and keep bringing help to those who need it most.
What a wonderful example of people putting themselves out to help others. Thank you…I teared up watching you guys.
This is exactly why I carry an handheld aircraft radio with me whenever I travel. 121.5 can save a lot of lives.
Amen to you and the Sparks team for this inspirational video to help someone that was truly in need. You all are a blessing.
Mike, and Dave make an awesome team up, and I hope they do a lot more in the future 👍
Thank you so much for all you do! Amazing to watch you and everyone pull together for that family in a rough time.
On a side note, love the TRX!
God bless Mike and thanks for showing us this!
