I would bet that James demanded payment from Dylan for the work that he did for him and Dylan refused, which set off James. How could his parents allow a criminal to be on their son's land without having him checked out? Dylan was still just a teenager. Also, it seems the local police missed several red flags and did not act on them.
This is the first I've heard of the case, so I don't mean to come across like I don't believe you or anything rude like that. Did Dr. Grande say Dylan was 19? I suppose he did also say Dylan had been working on the farm for a number of summers, so maybe he started at 16-17? I don't really even understand *why* the grandfather would purchase such undesirable farm land for his grandson to grow crops in the first place? It just seems like a waste of money and effort. Also, putting in that amount of hard work for so long just to end up with no crops growing could have been really disappointing and aggravating for Dylan. None of that part makes sense to me. Can I ask where you got the other info on this case? Was it reading news articles or is there another youtube video that goes into it in more detail?
@Rebecca-hc5ju she allowed him to drop out of high school at 16. Sent him to the desert where nothing grows. He ended up forming an unhealthy relationship with a very sick man. Dylan was doomed out there and she did nothing. She even admitted to never once visiting him in 3 years. She never even saw the filthy trailer he was living in until he went missing.
I've been wading through comments to find something like this.. there is no way I would let my young son just out his teens go live in an area like this all on his own..Nor only dangerous for an older person but especially a lad so young. It was a ludicrous idea..that land doesn't even look fertile enough to farm.. Makes no sense. The lad was basically a sitting duck.. His family did fail him.
@@eadweard. Not true at all. Some people engage in risk assessment as a matter of habit. Years ago a friend send a good read, titled "The Unthinkable: Who Survives When Disaster Strikes - and Why". Learning to look and think ahead to potential hazards BEFORE they happen is what saves people. Dylans father recounts how Brenner was always criticizing Dylan....that he was jealous of him. Lot's of crazies live in the desert...it's not just an "inner city" phenomena. Dylan likely didn't recognize the danger because his grandparents knew him or introduced him to Jim, who is referred to in the arresting affidavit as " Brenner and another Lucin resident, D.H., were considered “family friends” of D.R. and his family." Being isolated, being alone, and only casually knowing someone make you vulnerable. Dylan was too young to see the red flags.

Another interesting video. One thing surprises me. I'm in the UK and over here a content maker might shy away from tackling this story as it hasn't come to trial yet, as I understand it. Could a defence team not argue that exposure of this kind is prejudicial to a fair trial ? I don't doubt that you've thought of that of course. Maybe it's not an issue in the US. There's an intriguing unsolved murder you might want to look at from Ireland; the murder of French woman Sophie du Plantier, in County Cork in 1996. The suspect was never brought to trial in Ireland, but was found guilty in absentia by a court in Paris. Quite an unusual situation. All the best from the UK.

"A Rounds and Around We Go"- On Dr. Grande's Genius Another round of commentary takes us to the fate of Dylan Rounds. Rounds was concerned with completing the daily rounds of planting crops and harvesting those crops after the seasonal rounds were complete. On this property there was someone around named Mr. J. Brenner. With Dylan providing the topic of the presentation, the necessary villain worked his way around "lawn furniture assaults, concealed hammocks, unlawful use of garden gnomes, impersonating a patio dining set, and possession of umbrella tables with intent to distribute" (all without cracking a smile). I see this type of artistry as a "fusion" of true crime, horror a la Hitchcock, and one-dimensional evaluations of personality. Rounding out these comments, I hope we all have a chance to go another round for the sake of a dose of daily humor. Thank you Dr. Grande.
Such a sad case! I am confused about one point. The murder charge makes sense, but can they bring a charge for dessication of a corpse when they haven't found a body?
If you are have a close relationship with someone, its very easy to run a background check on them and get a criminal history. I think this is a reasonable thing to do, even when dating. In Dylan's case he was alone and very close to a dangerous individual. If Dylan could not get the guy's information for a background check, he should have stayed away from the guy until the guy was removed from the property. Or had the police come out and investigate. Had this been done, Dylan would be alive today.
I think Dr. Grande referred to this at the end of the video when he spoke of Dylan's general level of worldly inexperience in sizing people up. It sounds like Dylan simply didn't realise that Brenner was dangerous and may not have even realised that Brenner was an illegal squatter on the adjacent landowner's property. For all we know, Brenner told Dylan (naive and inexperienced) that the landowner was allowing him to live out there for free in return for keeping an eye on the property. May even have told Dylan that he and the adjacent landowner were old friends. As for running background checks on people, I'm going to be 68 soon, I live so far out in the country that you have to take a gravel road to get to my gravel road, the nearest town to me has fewer than 400 residents and it would never occur to me to run a background check on someone I met.Thirty years ago, when I lived in a city of 75,000, I was much more wary and suspicious of people but now? It just doesn't even occur to me. Everyone I meet is through someone I know or is a relative of someone I already know. Doing the social "how we're connected" verbal dance is one of the pleasures of country life out here. It sounds like Dylan grew up in a similar environment.
@@raymaharaj4502 But you may THINK you have a close relationship with someone. Even to more experienced people, the amount of deceivers and con artists out there can be mind boggling. We need trust, we need to be able to trust people, but people are not trustworthy. Sometimes I just shake my head in astonishment that there are even such things as Internet dating sites. Those people, indeed, should be running background checks on each other. I bet they don't usually do so.

I would bet that James demanded payment from Dylan for the work that he did for him and Dylan refused, which set off James. A guy like James will 'pitch right in' without saying anything about compensation and then demand it at some point. Possibly, James threatened Dylan, which prompted Dylan to bring his gun but James disarmed him and Dylan paid the price.
He was too young to be out there by himself in my opinion.
@@Derek032789too young? He was 19!?
@@brookehanlon7 Don’t give me that crap. He was 19 years old with no real life experience living alone in the middle of bloody nowhere. I have no doubt he was a responsible, hard working young man but he was also naive and inexperienced with the world. That probably cost him his life.

Always like to see an new upload from Dr. Grande! I heard about this case through "Missing in America". Great to see more unsolved disappearance cases being solved!
It was never solved
@@dirtypossem It's been slow going, but they caught the killer, and on pretty solid evidence too- which is certainly more progress than a lot of well documented unsolved disappearance cases end up developing. With my initial comment I was going by the logic that, at least hopefully, the killer will divulge more information and fill out law enforcements blank spots as the case proceeds; unless you are of the opinion that they have the wrong guy I suppose

This story is heartbreaking.
Although, most of these stories are horrible tragic situations, I love these videos because you're listening intently to the story and then all the sudden you comprehend the joke Dr. Grande just placed in the story, and you start LOL'ing.
How could his parents allow a criminal to be on their son's land without having him checked out? Dylan was still just a teenager. Also, it seems the local police missed several red flags and did not act on them.
Brenner was not on Dylans Land, he was on the land that held the grain shed.
Brenner lived with Candice and Dylan for years. He was a family friend. Dylan's disappearance is his mother's fault.
@jonzaremba how is his disappearance his mother's fault? She didn't make Dylan disappear.
Dylan shouldn't have been out there by himself. He was in the middle of nowhere! A lot of people trying to evade the law squat out there.
This is called "hindsight bias".
@@eadweard. It's called "anticipating potential problems".... Remote desert areas are rife with those who want to be "off the radar".... for a reason.
@@trailrunner925 Everyone with hindsight bias thinks they'd anticipate the potential problems.
Dylan likely didn't recognize the danger because his grandparents knew him or introduced him to Jim, who is referred to in the arresting affidavit as " Brenner and another Lucin resident, D.H., were considered “family friends” of D.R. and his family."
Being isolated, being alone, and only casually knowing someone make you vulnerable. Dylan was too young to see the red flags.
Thank you for covering this story. I have been following the Dylan case since the beginning.
God Bless us all!!!
Dr. Grande, can you do a video on former Family Feud host Ray Combs?
He appears to have been going through a lot between 1994-1996, more than just losing his job as a game show host.

I had to pause to wrap my head around the term "malicious shooting." It just goes to show you where we are as a society when you qualify "shooting" with the term "malicious."
Well, there is "accidental" shooting. And maybe even "idiotic" shooting (people playing with guns as if they were toys). I doubt these terms would apply in this case.
Sanctimonious drivel. "Shooting", when unqualified, isn't illegal.
Dude recorded himself after he killed the boy, I think he took the phone from Dylan and then swiped the phone screen to the left by accident and started recording himself or took some fast shots, I heard that it shows him bloody and a bloody gun
But when he looked at the phone again wouldn't Brenner have seen that it was recording? Wouldn't Brenner have deleted the incriminating video?
I think Dylan started recording him while he was dying to show who was responsible.
@@Taricus yeah and I heard the news said that the Timelapse show the killer all bloody cleaning himself and a rifle too. So he probably swiped left on the iPhone and started recording everything after he took the phone from him.

Have you ever looked at the flight of Eastern Airlines 401? It went down in the Everglades, while the crew was distracted with a landing gear issue. I have followed this case since it happened. Law enforcement has done very little. Dylan’s mother has led the search to find her son with the help of Dylan’s father. It is heart breaking. I support Candace any way I can.
Well this is what happens when you give Criminals chances. This man was arrested numerous times and prosecutors wanted to be the nice guy. Believe people when they show you who they are. This is why our justice system is terrible. So much sympathy for the criminal and not enough for the young farmer. Its literally insane the things we allow a small group of people to get away with.

A point of fact to bring up is that muzzleloading and black powder firearms aren't considered firearms, hence a propensity for use among felons

They irrigate, that's how you grow things in the desert. Water rates are potentially a life and death issue.
It's sad that Dylan didn't bring friends or siblings so he didn't live alone. There's always a risk of antisocial characters in remote areas. Having others around, especially if all are armed is a good deterrent against crime.

Grande's Genius
Another round of commentary takes us to the fate of Dylan Rounds.
So heartbreaking! I wish they could bring Dylan home!

@@mangafq8 oh, I am thankful, especially for the internet. It makes being a hermit much, much easier!
@meFatuations. If you feel the need to run a background check on somebody then you OBVIOUSLY do NOT have a close relationship.
I agree, James killed Dylan
Given his history & the clear evidence there is no question. Dylan would never just walk away or hide out, he lived for his farm & was very content there.
