I don't think anyone can appreciate how Knofler has impacted the world of guitar. He created his own sound by playing fingerstyle - which is particularly difficult on electric guitar, creating so much sound, very unique. Chet Atkins and Merle Travis also fingerpicked - but used their thumb to create primary a bass line to their fingers - Knofler claws, sometimes playing bass line with his thumb - sometime not. He's so good, so unique - he makes it look easy. He's a true pioneer and probably won't be emulated for a very long time.
Mark knopler has to be the top 5 guitar players of all time...he plays rock music as good as he plays calm love songs. The dude can literally play any genre of music as long as it has a guitar

What's truly incredible about this is if you listen to the guitar solo and close your eyes you can BARELY tell it has moved from Knopfler to Clapton and yet two completely different players, two completely different guitars, same tone, same style, two players absolutely playing in sync with each other and absolutely killing it...
Maybe I’m completely wrong, but it seems like Mark really tried to impress with his vocals more than usual. He knows he’s around other greats and I think he stepped it up just a tad.

I’ve watched this video many many times. It never gets old. The talent is assembled on that stage is mind blowing. But the thing I love the most is that woman in the choir at 4:40. She’s sees the camera and her face lights up with joy. You know she’s thinking to herself: “OK, I can die now”
Just a thought... fast fwd 20 years. Which icons could the human race muster onto one stage that could even compare to the talent and heritage of these artists on stage. I feel sorry for future generations bereft of amazing quality emotive music from their times and lives...
For everyone who can’t believe Clapton is playing rhythm- mark and Eric have a loooong history, and he has insane respect for Knopfler (as he should). Knopfler is one of the most skilled and liked guitarists especially in 70s-80s. Very humble guy. 4 absolute legends on stage. Side note : Knopfler left Dire Straits at the HEIGHT of their fame - he’s stated he hated fame , and said they got so big he would go into catering after the show and didn’t like seeing strangers. Very low key guy.
As Mark put it himself: ‘fame is the price you pay for success’. He wore the headband for so long as he realised people just didn’t recognise him offstage without it.
In the song he says the word faggot a couple of times but he changed it for this performance… That was probably sting looking at him wondering if he’s gonna say it or not, but he didn’t . He change it to Maggot and mother trucker!! I noticed that too LOL

Last saw Mark play this live in 2019 on his (what turned out to be) final tour. He still had it, never about excesses and all about the music.
