Many years ago, I was a high school teacher in a very small town. We were going over World War 1. I played this song on the final day of the unit. Normally the class was loud and chatty - just like normal sophomores. I remember that I had a teacher's aide, a very nice woman in her 30's who was very interested in this era and my approach to teaching this. At the end of the song, you could have heard a pin drop in the class. Dead quiet. The aide had tears streaming down her face. I will never forget this. War is a terrible thing in the human condition. This song brings that to light. Thank you.
Firstly, don’t take this as a rebuttal of how you and everyone (mostly) view the song. I come from a Quaker family and my grandfather was a conscientious objector on an ambulance train during WW1. His only regret? Not being a combatant in the war…. As Quakers we absorb the blame for not volunteering (and ignore) doesn’t matter it’s a conscious decision. The regret my grandfather had is different and challenging to reconcile with today’s narrative. Nonetheless, I still feel in a conscious, and probably subconscious way, that his view albeit without context has merit. In biblical terms turn the other other cheek until your fellow humans suffer disproportionately as a result.

I bought a ticket from a tout to see Dire Straits at Hammersmith Odeon. In June 1988 I was at Wembley Stadium for the Nelson Mandela gig when Eric Clapton played rhythm guitar. I saw Mark doing solo tours two or three more times over the next 20 odd years. And I was at this gig in The Albert Hall in 2019. I shared the planet with this man and his amazing music. @@nickcarter1102 Blimey, he would be pleased. Mark Knopfler is 71 as of 12 August this year (2020).
Knöpfler?
Dire straits have played all the way through my life from boy to man. They'll most likely escort me to the grave. My soundtrack to humanity.
Well said stevie. Me too.
same here Bud love this track play it all the time its frickin awesome i grew up with Dire Straits im 52 now

Wow amazingly put speaking same for a lot of us 👏
me also..
What a show! Impeccable, arrangements, music and voice! Congratulations. May God keep him for many years! Brother. Beautiful song!🙏🙏🙏
To hear that love and commitment to a song just makes the world a better place. Thanks!@
This just popped up in my feed. One of my favorite tunes from that album. Heard it a million times. Now, with war raging in Ukraine, there's a whole new weight and presence to this song. And I'm weeping like a baby for those souls who've lost their lives defending their homes. Praying for peace.
I had the exact same thought brother, it would be fantastic to get this to no 1 , with the proceeds going to the displaced people of Ukraine, glory to Ukraine !
Война вна Украине которую заметили только сейчас началась восемь лет назад и начал её Турчинов. А продолжили Порошенко и Зеленский. И Россия её закончит.
Yeah it really hits you in yr feels...😢
The Russian and Ukrainians are "Brothers in Arms"....that's the point.
"War raging in Ukraine" - yep ethnic Russians have been killed in their thousands there for a long time. That's what you are referring to, I assume?
71 and still the best guitar player there has ever been.
Fantastic guitar 🎸 player I can listen to this song every day as its so brilliant 👏
😳😭🇮🇹💋❤️🇮🇹😍💋🌹
I agree!
The best guitar player there has been in this world. Indeed.
Because David Gilmore is not from this world.
Both genius.

Not beautiful, poignant, for my mates forever young.
Thanks I appreciate,do you have email let's chat over there
An absolute masterpiece. Marks guitar work is hauntingly beautiful.
You will all have to excuse me a while, some dust seems to be in my eye......
Just explain to me how a man with a guitar can stir so many emotions in just a matter of minutes? Yet I feel better for it?
Genuinely, thank you Mark.
Raf 3561 this song and his playing has been with me for years especially since the bad days back in the 70s as a soldier in Northern Ireland where this was played at many funerals and still is for many veterans.
I have been lucky enough to see some of the greatest players ever and only managed to see Mark once, but he is awesome. I missed seeing Stevie Ray Vaughn by a couple of weeks due to his demise and wont bore you with the others but this guy wow
@@peterdockerty8077 such things never bore me. Thanks for your reply - and service. 👍
My special regards to all for whom the music was created. Extra claps to the musician.
@@peterdockerty8077 I was lucky enough to see both Mark (with Dire Straits) and Stevie Ray on the same bill in 1985. It doesn't get a whole lot better than that.
Hi Raf3561, same for me; Even if I listened to the many versions of this song hundreds of times. Still so emotional. And live at the 2019 concert (Antverp/Belgium) was a timeless moment
Hands down!...one of the best .. if not the best guitar player the world has ever known!!!!
Pure ermotion ...Mark's totally taken in a tearful interpretation that seems to show his heart bleeding.... i adoore this song ... thanks, Mark, for sharing with us your emotions your talent your life... 💝

Timeless sure!
Absolutely brilliant
This song brings so much emotion to so many people. If it was the only thing this man had ever done, he could be satisfied that he had made such a positive contribution to mankind. Fortunately, he has blessed us with so much more of his gifted talent.
Песни на века. Шедевры. Спасибо Вам!
every year this song is played by Q107 here in Toronto at 11:00am on November 11th as a tribute to the fallen. what a powerful piece of music.

“Brothers in Arms” should be played at ALL Remembrance Day ceremonies.

This is not only a song, It's a profound statement .
My brother is dying of cancer at the moment, and I can’t visit him and hold him like I want to so bad. As a veteran this record always tugged the heart strings, and at the moment is just helping out with that. Keep safe people In this shitty time.
Stay strong, brother. Bug hug.

I served in the Argentine Air Force. This is the best anthem for everyone and every soldier in the world. The color of the flag does not matter, only the memory of their relatives , friends and the tears with which I accompany each time I hear this beautiful song
I didnt realise that was what the song was to be, i just love it

@Sir John Bull that old chestnut
During the Rwanda massacres I was a guide leader at Ruislip Baptist church and we played this whilst the guides acted out the devastation of losing their families and homes. The whole congregation was in tears. Thank you Mark for so much.
This work of art is quite loaded with imagery and emotion, Pointed yet vague, dripping with character to the point of tears, we are fully involved in the mess and the drama.
Pure genius. Knopfler is part of my life as much as anything around me. His music has been with me for over 40 years. Thank you, Mark. God bless.

A wholly unique, different class of guitar musicianship unlike any other. A guitarist for the ages.
A soundtrack throughout my journey of life. Knofler is a virtuoso in every way. Completely mesmerized by his artistry. Beautiful song!
When guys like Mark Knopfler eventually pass from this world, who out of the next generations is capable of replacing them? I can't think of anyone with even 1% of his talent.
Limey Turtle Cute way of saying you think he'll die soon

Joe Bonamassa can still replace him
You are wrongly educated if you think so..
In 1981, back when we were just kids, Making Movies was the go to album for me and my mates. Man, they were good days.
In December 1985 I took a train from South Devon to London.
I am one lucky, lucky bastard.
Also very narcissistic. You managed to make a beautiful music clip of a great song all about you. Aren’t you nothing.
Jealous much? This self confessed “lucky, lucky bastard” is simply showing his love for an amazing artist. Don’t waste your life being jealous of people. Enjoy the arts and the love people have for them.
