Dude. This is probably the best Marvel video essay I’ve ever seen. There are usually so many speculations and jumps that I don’t agree with in these, but you nailed it. I’d love to see you interview the Russo’s after everything.
*SPOILER BELOW* I'm blown away by how well you managed to break down and come to the conclusion you did regarding steve and tony at the end of endgame, and how it was completely accurate. Bravo.
This might seem like an odd choice, but I always liked that last scene in Age of Ultron as an ending for the characters. Tony finally retires, while Cap embraces his new home, and prepares to coach a new team of Avengers recruits. For Cap in particular, I love the idea that his role in the modern day could be passing on experience and wisdom to up and coming heroes. His scene with Wanda at the beginning of Civil War speaks to how valuable he could be as a mentor. Of course, Ultron wasn't truly the end to either of their stories at the time, but I could see their futures looking something like that once Thanos is dealt with.
Yeah, more than any other character in the MCU, Steve Rogers deserves a happy ending. After everything Steve gave up, selflessly, he deserves a happy ending and that moment when he can put his shield down and smile at a job well done. Many characters have things taken from them, but only Steve gave everything willingly
And that’s why I think he will die in endgame. The character who has lost the most and deserve the happiest ending is always the most tragic character when they don’t get said ending.
Benjamin Howard yeah, SPOILER FOR THOSE WHO HAVENT WATCHED ENDGAME YET! However, we still had someone who willingly lost everything. The only difference being that he suffered even more of a loss at the end. Steve has lost the chance to be with the love of his life and most of the life he would have led. Tony sacrificed a future with his family and lost everything he wished for in order to protect it. I know that I am very biased here, but seeing tony with all the stones made me go breathless for longer than I thought. Because as “obvious“ as it was, in that moment the realization hit me. Tony Stark, now father and loving husband, will die saving not only those he loves but everyone else as well. Because HE was the earths best defender. When push came to shove, just like Steve, tony did not hesitate. And if that is not damn admirable in a sad way, I don’t know what else is
I'm surprised that Natasha wasn't brought up that much when talking about Cap and the Russos journey. Its a partnership that's been building in every film they've headed so far. Shes become a fast ally to Steve and facilitated his arc in a very personal way. They've become almost interwoven with each other, to the point where the only other two characters that have shared more screen time together are Tony and Pepper. She is much closer to Steve than Tony, equal with even Sam and Bucky.
I don't think he lied about Tony's parents though. I interpreted it as "I didn't know Bucky killed them but yeah I knew HYDRA killed your parents." Am I alone here?
I agree with you with honest enthusiasm. There would have been no way that Steve knew Bucky was the assassin as Steve didn't know Bucky was the Winter Soldier neither did Steve know that there were other Super-Soldiers. Nuff Said.
I'm kinda surprised Tony didn't find out sooner, given the fact that he bugged and copied sheilds whole database, presumably even the Hydra stuff back in the first avengers movie
I agree. All though there is room for doubt. When Zemo got to Bucky he asked for what happened on the day Howard Stark died. When Cap found him he forced him to tell him what Zemo asked. So we could say that from that moment he knew
I always got the impression he was saying he basically never confirmed it because he strongly suspected and was almost certain he would not like what he found. That sort of plausible deniability is grey area that is certainly not what Cap is supposed to embody. Hence the betrayal.
I mostly agree with this interpretation, but I think the betrayal comes more from the fact that Steve knew Hydra killed Tony's parents since Winter Soldier but didn't tell Tony about it after so long. Had Zemo never come, Steve might've kept it secret until his death. If Steve had told Tony about it after finding out, Civil War might've been prevented.
Cap is definitely up there as one of my favorites, though I think I am a bit biased since we were both army. One of the most telling things about him in almost every depiction is the sheer damn reverence and respect he's showed for his conviction and morality. It's a repeated occurrence that if it's Cap's way, it's the right way. Even though they're all different people, on some level every Avenger wishes they were a bit more like Steve. The great irony is that while everyone looks at him as if he always knows the path, just like many real veterans are, he's probably more lost and adrift than they are. It's only his will and sense of duty that keep him on his feet. Nice video series, good work.
Age of Ultron: Tony- "We'll lose" Steve-"Then we'll do that together too" Endgame: Tony-"We said we'd lose but you said we'd do that together" *I am NOT emotionally prepared for this movie*
This was a superb video essay. I'm as nervous for Cap/Steve as I would be a real person going to fight in a real war. It's strange, i don't have this apprehension for any of the others, and I blame Marvel's excellent storytelling and character arc for him.
Love the essays! I just don't get why people think sending Steve back to 1945 would be a peaceful ending for him. What, do they expect him to just kick back and relax knowing what he does about the 20th century? Korea, the Cold War, Vietnam, Hydra?
Yeah, because he was living in the 21st century and knew that the 20th century horrors would eventually end and that he and a bunch of other swell folk will be there to protect from the 21st century horrors. Its really a non issue.
Yeah, and also if he moves something it might have a lot of unintended consequences, like, for example, if he disintegrated Hydra, secretly through Peggy Carter, we dont know if Shield would've still been around to act as an anchor for the Avengers when they first formed, so there would be no one to defeat thanos when it comes to it
Welp, now I feel like Steve's gonna' die in Endgame. I mean if they pull his arc off without doing that, the Russo's really will be one of the best filmmakers of all time.
@@jordansweet8054 right? I feel like they still kind of stand in the shadow of Christopher Nolan in the public conversation, but they don't deserve to...
@@Phelie315 I agree.Nolan is great and deserves most of the praise he gets but the conversation should be wider than it is.The Russos,Gunn,Bird and Rami,at least in some respects have contributed as much as him and did some things better in my opinion.
What I expect is Tony and Steve dying after reconciled their differences, alongside Thor, who lives with a duty to carry on their legacy, as all three fight Thanos, who took the people closest to them. But despite being in a fight for their lives, the two heroes die in peace, having found what they needed in each other. The last thing they see is Thor finally defeating Thanos, and they give one last smile as their greatest foe bites the dust.
@surfitlive The person above never said that lying was a bad thing, just that it was a part of his character from the start and makes sense throughout the movies. Also, you use the terms soyboy snowflaker trigger puffs unironically?
@surfitlive It is for personal gain. Bucky calls him out on it, too. Steve has a huge chip on his shoulder. He wants to be part of something meaningful, to do something meaningful, because he was overlooked all his life. That's also what the flashback scene in Civil War is about. It doesn't mean he isn't morally upstanding, but he is still fueled by his own pig-headedness and desire to live up to his own ideal of who he should be above everything else.
I've watched a few of your video essays now and jeez i just now notice 30-40 minutes goes in a flash, you my friend have most absolutely earned this like and sub.
I think I can relate to Captain America far too much. Your essay breakdown was like a reflection into both the character and myself. It's weird. And awe-inspiring. Amazing job. "After spending so much time thinking he's going to die... the audience gets to see him smile properly again." This was EXACTLY was I was feeling when I started watching Endgame, and when it ended. I was SO satisfied... to see him smile, because it was the epitome of hope. That symbolic end to the character arc was essential.
I'm an American but I'd like to think the Stars and Stripes represents hope to people around the world... I realize our politicians muck things up but our people are usually more than willing to help out people who need it....
You should talk about "the snap" itself sometime and how it affected all the Avengers. there's a lot of talk *at* "the snap" but not a lot *about* "the snap". The reason why I think the snap is such a brilliant plot device is because it's so insular. Thanos wasn't looking to establish a tyranny which always turns into "well how long is the tyranny going to last? How will he maintain control?". Everything he wanted to do was one singular moment that changed everything forever. It was either going to happen, or it didn't. There was no question about how long he'd do it, or what the effects would be. He did it, and we knew what the effects were.
Holy shit! You literally described my life when you started talking about Cap not moving forward in life. I got hit with a wave of "That's why I like him so much!" This was so helpful. I needed this video as a person. Just you speaking about moving on hit me hard. Thank you!
Amazing, I may have seen this much after Endgame, but this gave me a whole new outlook on the character, Steve Rogers and his arc. You did an amazing outlook on this, that could be a great reason why I loved the direction the Russo Brothers made with this story, loved this, awesome work. :)
Full Fat Videos when Cap drops his shield, saying to Bucky "I won’t fight you. You are my friend" was the moment I completely fell in love with this character. It was like I was watching episode 6 of Star Wars, where Luke throws his lightsaber, refusing to kill his father even in the face of death.
Eh. I would disagree. Luke's journey was becoming a hero and learning what it was he stood for. Captain America has always stood for something and always wanted to save others. If I was going to compare him to another character in fiction, as cheesy as it sounds, it would probably be the character All Might from My Hero Academia. A man born with no power, with no obligation to help others, but determined to do so.
Fangsabre well you can clearly see similarities between Luke/Steve and Bucky/Vader I didn’t say that Cap is 100% similar to Luke, but their willingness to sacrifice themselves for the people they love despite all circumstances is unquestionable
I just love how these videos make me notice the smallest and yet most important details of the MCU that I hadn't really thought about and make me love the movies and the characters even more because of them.
Before this video ends, I'm already shouting "YES! YES". (Metaphorically. My neighbours need their sleep.) This right here is why Steve is my favourite MCU character. He's stuck, and doesn't know what to do for his future.
@@lurkintomgaming397 He didn't, he knew WS was key Political assassin for 70 years & Starks were assasinated same way so anyone with brain will make the connection, but there's no way to say it was Bucky/WS who actually killed them or other agents 🙈 neither did Movies show he had confirmation

@@litovietbui Same way Tony knew Bucky was mind controlled Assasin for 70 years but still tried to kill Bucky for what Hydra did to him, while he was'nt even WS mode then. He basically put his fingers in his ears going lalalalala. But, he deep down he knew what the truth was.
Abhishek Suratkar well actually, Zola showed Cap a newspaper explaining this in TWS. Cap knew for 2 years and refused to tell Tony. THAT’S putting your fingers in your ears and going lalalalalalalalala. Tony, on the other hand, was still not quite over his parents’ early deaths, as shown in the beginning with him using what is now Quentin Beck’s BARF technology. Considering he’d already been trying to bring the Captain in over trying to defend an already mass murderer (the Winter Soldier), and then got told it was a fraud and had to go off and help Cap, that’s already a lot on the brain. “Oh, I just fought you bitterly already but now I’m being told a lot of new shit that changes everything so now I have to fight with you against some soldiers, I think?” Is a shit ton of information to be trying to comprehend over his already emotional state, including the loss of his girlfriend because he wanted to save the world, the deaths of his parents, etc. THEN finally you add into the mix that, through Tony’s eyes, not only is Cap still trying to protect a mass murderer, but that this same mass murderer is the one that killed your parents brutally, which you never quite got over fully in the first place, to steal the serum that made the super soldiers they would have been fighting, and that on top of all of this one of your best friends, who you’ve just swallowed your pride to help out, knew about this for 2 full years and never even thought to tell you. That’s way too much information to process, regardless of intelligence, because sentient creatures are emotional and too many emotions strips rationality away. Cap saying that Bucky didn’t have any control isn’t gonna overthrow the fact that it was still the guy that did it in Tony’s mind, that Cap tried to hide this from him for selfish reasons, and that Cap, to Tony, could just be lying to try and save his friend, which he’s done already. You see? Too much information and also stuff that Tony wouldn’t and definitely shouldn’t have taken as fact without proof. NOT sticking your fingers in your ears and going lalalalalalalalalalalala.

Great content guys. I'm in my 40s and never imagined this cultural phenomenon could occur. Captain America has been a real surprise to me, with Mcfeely, Markus and the Russo's knocking out the park. Civil War touched on Capatilism v Socialism in many respects. I'm looking forward to Avengers : Endgame (...Captain America 5) :)
In Civil War (the characters who signed the Sokovia Accords) continuously save the planet from destruction, the Avengers end up being the enforcers of the establishment (UN), with their sickeningly rich leader (Tony) and alarming sense of patriotism. That's why seeing Steve (the most patriotic looking superhero), rebels against the Accords (bringing down Shield/Hydra in the previous film) due to these establishments not aligning with his beliefs. He's a rebel, a Hero, looking out for the little guy/gal. Thats just my take on it. Lots of people have covered it more indepth than me.
Craig Fleming so you’re saying that the members of Iron Man’s team are socialists due to their belief that the government should take more responsibility in ensuring the security of ordinary people? And you’re saying that Captain America’s team are capitalists because they want the Avengers to remain as a “private enterprise” free of oversight and direct responsibility to the people, enabling them to act with more independence? ... when I think of socialists, billionaire playboys don’t really come to mind.
Brilliant! Brilliant job. I'm so glad I wasn't the only one who made these observations while watching this movie. Brilliant job. I can't wait to see what Cap's Endgame will be, come hell or highwater. And i hope he smiles again should he survive. Oh Captain my Captain! 💘
it's amazing to watch your video after having seen End Game. I didn't watch it before because i didnt want to have any theory about the movie and im in awe
I really appreciate your deep dive into Captain America and the insights you provided into his character. I hope you do a video after you've watched Endgame. Captain America has been my favourite from the start, because he was good man from the get go that got a chance to make a difference. Loved the journey he has been on from The First Avenger to Endgame. Thank you for the two essays.
3:40 You know, I've been wondering whether if there is time travel involved whether it wasn't Strange or whoever who dragged Red Skull to Vormir. That comment of seeing the future would be a nicely fitting retcon.
Amen! I’ve been in Edinburgh, on the High Street (where the fight begins), AND in the train station - where Cap steps out of the shadows. Yay, Edinburgh!
The Grandfather Paradox would cancel out Steve going back, as then he wouldn’t exist in the modern day. Then that would change many different things about how the modern day plays ouf
it really depends on how they would implement time travel. They could very realistically do a multi verse theory representation of it where the simple act of him going back in time creates a new pocket universe where he is in the 40's living life as he would have.
It'll be like "oh look at this great character that we've been developing for over 10 years. We're gonna act like he didn't exist all this time and all the actions that he has done in the MCU will be erased as well". That will make watching all the previous movies pointless. This the same thing X men days of future past did and it ruined the X men franchise for me
You're overthinking Steve's motives. He's not embracing a "dark side" because he's nostalgic, but he's holding true to the simple principle he expressed in The First Avenger: he doesn't like bullies. Hydra was the institutional bully par excellence and Bucky was its victim. Even when he did awful things, Bucky was exploited and manipulated. Steve's real mission is to oppose bullies with principled strength. Tony's desire for revenge was also the result of Hydra's manipulation-- in a sense his lust for vengeance furthered Hydra's lust for power by undermining the Avengers and Steve was bound to fight him, not just to save Bucky but to save Tony from the destructive power of his own anger.
I gotta agree with you here. Cap doesn't like bullies, but Age of Ultron deepened his arc. Great job on your analysis btw (but then again, I'm biased, I thought something similar)
I really hope they don't just do that time travel fixes everything bullshit. What I think might be more interesting is Thanos or circumstances give Cap a chance to go back and live the life he never had but decides to destroy the stone/gauntlet so that he can save the world. Realizing that it is finally time to move on just like Tony must learn something similar.
Hey man, just had to say, I've watched all of your videos about the MCU Big three (Iron Man, Captain America and Thor), and I'm glad that I did. They really allowed me to see so much more and broadened my perspective for the better. Thanks! :)

I know that I am very biased here, but seeing tony with all the stones made me go breathless for longer than I thought. Because as “obvious“ as it was, in that moment the realization hit me.
So well said, Sir!
Cap inspired me to enlist in the army...serve my country...Just waiting for myself to be at the right age...
Well said Tom. ...... Even though you're Army, Semper Fi.....
This video shows 2 things:
how good the writing was back then and how good this dude is at analyzing
Thank you!!!
You practically predicted Captain America's ending arc in Endgame!! Well done!
Age of Ultron:
Tony- "We'll lose"
Steve-"Then we'll do that together too"
Endgame:
Tony-"We said we'd lose but you said we'd do that together"

I love how accurate this video is
You actually managed to talk about and give a viewpoint that I don't think anyone else has and I applaud you for that. Well Done!
Chris Langston that’s the best thing we could hear and what we strive to achieve! Thank you
This was a superb video essay. I'm as nervous for Cap/Steve as I would be a real person going to fight in a real war. It's strange, i don't have this apprehension for any of the others, and I blame Marvel's excellent storytelling and character arc for him.
Same here! I've been so excited for Endgame, now its getting close I'm just fearful!
Love the essays!
I just don't get why people think sending Steve back to 1945 would be a peaceful ending for him. What, do they expect him to just kick back and relax knowing what he does about the 20th century? Korea, the Cold War, Vietnam, Hydra?
Alida Gupta I know that’s why I think the only true way for Steve’s story to end is with his death at the hands of thanos
👀
Yeah, because he was living in the 21st century and knew that the 20th century horrors would eventually end and that he and a bunch of other swell folk will be there to protect from the 21st century horrors.
Its really a non issue.
Yeah, and also if he moves something it might have a lot of unintended consequences, like, for example, if he disintegrated Hydra, secretly through Peggy Carter, we dont know if Shield would've still been around to act as an anchor for the Avengers when they first formed, so there would be no one to defeat thanos when it comes to it
captain america let 9/11 happen
Dude, I'm watching this after the release and your interpretation is kinda mindblowing...
Watching this after seeing endgame is surreal and super interesting.
Welp, now I feel like Steve's gonna' die in Endgame.
I mean if they pull his arc off without doing that, the Russo's really will be one of the best filmmakers of all time.
I already think they're among the best blockbuster directors around today. I think they've proved it time and time over.
Aqib.A.C prepare for the fucking retards who’ve seen endgame spamming this comment with replies
We discover Steve Rogers is a liar the first moment we see him and he's lying about his name and personal info to try to sneak into the army
@surfitlive The person above never said that lying was a bad thing, just that it was a part of his character from the start and makes sense throughout the movies.
Also, you use the terms soyboy snowflaker trigger puffs unironically?
@surfitlive we all lie for the best intentions. Be that if the intentions are good or not.
@surfitlive Shut up, gramps.
And lying wasn't getting it done.
I've watched a few of your video essays now and jeez i just now notice 30-40 minutes goes in a flash, you my friend have most absolutely earned this like and sub.
what the heck. you perfectly described exactly what happened in endgame
i sure did
I think I can relate to Captain America far too much. Your essay breakdown was like a reflection into both the character and myself. It's weird. And awe-inspiring. Amazing job.
"After spending so much time thinking he's going to die... the audience gets to see him smile properly again."
This was EXACTLY was I was feeling when I started watching Endgame, and when it ended. I was SO satisfied... to see him smile, because it was the epitome of hope. That symbolic end to the character arc was essential.
So what you're saying is that the flag on Cap's uniform and shield does not represent America. It's just a terran symbol for "Hope".
"it's not America, in my time it means 'hope'"
Well here its... America
I never thought about it that way, but you are right.
👏👏👏
Yes. This, please.
Ocek perhaps once endgame clarified the fallout and meaning of the snap this would be a great idea! X
This is probably the most powerful video I have seen in my entire life, it touched upon caps character perfectly and even managed to put me in tears.
OG trilogy's Luke Skywalker's vibe is so strong in Chris Evans's Captain America
Darkstar love this
Full Fat Videos when Cap drops his shield, saying to Bucky "I won’t fight you. You are my friend" was the moment I completely fell in love with this character. It was like I was watching episode 6 of Star Wars, where Luke throws his lightsaber, refusing to kill his father even in the face of death.
I've said this for years! So true my man
Fangsabre well you can clearly see similarities between Luke/Steve and Bucky/Vader
I didn’t say that Cap is 100% similar to Luke, but their willingness to sacrifice themselves for the people they love despite all circumstances is unquestionable

What Cap meant was, that he knew Hydra ordered the hit on Tony's parents, but he didn't know it was Bucky that killed them.
TVperson1 yes he did rewatch again
@@lurkintomgaming397 He didn't, he knew WS was key Political assassin for 70 years & Starks were assasinated same way so anyone with brain will make the connection, but there's no way to say it was Bucky/WS who actually killed them or other agents 🙈 neither did Movies show he had confirmation
Cap can put two and two together, he just didn't want to face it. He basically put his fingers in his ears going lalalalala. But, he deep down he knew what the truth was.
One more Captain America thing to enjoy and savour before the (rumoured) end in Endgame. Thank you, you guys are absolute legends!!

How the hell did Civil War touch on Capitalism VS Socialism?
How do you think it touched on socialism VS capitalism?
Wtf does Civil War has to do with capitalism and socialism?

I think it works better as simply a dickhead saying "the future is Nazis and you suck", but that is a cool thought.
Of course, Tony is Steve’s foil, so of course you would mention Cap in your essay on Iron Man and vice versa would have a focus on their foil.
Batman Official I agree!

It's the Edinburgh sequence, not Glasgow
Let's just call it a Train Station Sequence...
It’s like calling the Avengers fight in Assemble the LA sequence. When it’s in New York.
Chris Filet yeah. I’m hoping he gets a dance w Peggy in like soul world or something. Whatever, his ending will be satisfying, I trust the filmmakers
it really depends on how they would implement time travel. They could very realistically do a multi verse theory representation of it where the simple act of him going back in time creates a new pocket universe where he is in the 40's living life as he would have.
@@Yak937 he is gonna wield mioneir thought
It'll be like "oh look at this great character that we've been developing for over 10 years. We're gonna act like he didn't exist all this time and all the actions that he has done in the MCU will be erased as well". That will make watching all the previous movies pointless. This the same thing X men days of future past did and it ruined the X men franchise for me
It would be another timeline surely?
WOW. You called it. Impressed.
Nailed that prediction
Man I was really waiting for this video
Kenrick Hackett I don’t think what you’re saying necessarily contradicts what I’ve said
Also, Steve extended the olive branch at the end to try and salve what damage he had personally caused.
I gotta agree with you here. Cap doesn't like bullies, but Age of Ultron deepened his arc. Great job on your analysis btw (but then again, I'm biased, I thought something similar)
well said buddy
I really hope they don't just do that time travel fixes everything bullshit. What I think might be more interesting is Thanos or circumstances give Cap a chance to go back and live the life he never had but decides to destroy the stone/gauntlet so that he can save the world. Realizing that it is finally time to move on just like Tony must learn something similar.
oof
