      @@SuperSickNerd Yep, they ALL do it. I am not sure why no one mentions it when talking about how "good" the 3800 engines are. No they aren't. Not a one of them will ever hit 200k miles without blowing a LIM gasket.. or whatever it is. Just like the 3100/3400's. They had a head/intake gasket that was shared.
      Not sure if the 3800 II is the same or not, but I've got a blown gasket on mine right now, too, and I flushed the coolant at 50 or 60k miles, too.
      It's just inevitable. A design flaw.
      The best engine out there is the 4.6 V8 2v as far as reliability goes IF you ask me.
      You can't blow those things up. Sure, they don't make big power for a V8. I know that. Sure, they don't have low end torque like you'd expect from a V8.
      But as far as longevity? Ford's 4.6 2v is the king. I had the 4.6 SOHC 2v HO in a 1994 Thunderbird LX. LOVED that engine. Slow? Absolutely... especially with the 3.08's in that IRS rear end.
      But it sounded great and it was bullet proof.... and it was far more comfortable than this 2000 Buick Park Avenue. Handled better, too. I mean, it had IRS ffs. The 94-95 had the 4.6 HO with 3.08's and the 96-97's had 3.27's... or is it 3.23's. Whichever the Ford 8.8" rear end uses. 3.27's, I believe. But for a 3800 pound car, that thing pulled every hill in overdrive over here in east TN on the highways, no matter the hill.
      This stupid 4000 pound V6 Buick is constantly shifting out of gears to pull the lightest of hills.
      I am a Ford man. I worked in a garage with my dad (who is the best mechanic around) from around 03-08, then on and off after that. He owned his own garage and we worked on ANYTHING and EVERYTHING that pulled in.
      THAT is what made me a Ford man. Never had to work on them. I got to see what cars had which common problems. While I always prefer a manual transmission, the 4R70W in the Thunderbird was also twice the transmission that the 4L60E's were. Can't count how many 4L60E rebuilds we did... from C5 vettes to Chevrolet 1500's. Didn't matter, they all tear up with ANY sort of abuse.
      That Ford 4R70W in the Thunderbird? I literally chirped the tires going into second gear several times a day for a year (until someone hit me and totaled it). NEVER an issue.
      How did such a dog of a car chirp the tires? Well, on a Ford, at least in those year models with that transmission, if you put the automatic shifter into 2nd, it stays in 2nd... whether you are at a dead stop or moving or whatever. So it'd force it into second, and I'd gas it at the right moment and it'd literally "sskrrt" into second lmao. Funny stuff. I think it was to help with traction in snow or something, so you could take off in 2nd gear. I dunno.
      I know some 4L60E's had it in things like Firebirds, there was a button you could press that would make it take off in second. But nonetheless, those transmissions were junk. The 4L60E is just a 700R4 with more electronics.
      If V6 cars blow them up, I dunno why GM thought they'd be a good choice for V8 anythings, ESPECIALLY half ton trucks.

    • @JustAGuy85
      @JustAGuy85 11 месяцев назад

      @@SuperSickNerd I have had a tank of a truck for around 12-14 years, now. A 1986 F-150 with the 5.0 EFI. NP435 trans (6.69 1st gear ratio), Ford 9" rear with 3.50:1 ratio, NP208 transfer case.
      It has needed TWO things in all that time. One is the timing chain and gears. Admittedly, they should have used steel from the factory, but they didn't. And the second was a TPS that was like $15 back then.
      And a headlight or two.
      And I have raised absolute HELL in that truck, on and off road. Dana 44 IFS in the front. 31x10.50 15" tires. It's a short bed/short wheel base and it will go anywhere in the snow or mud. Love that thing and will never sell it.

      Same, bro. I got an impala ss with the ls4. Luckily a lot of the transmission mods can transfer over, because they use the exact same 4l65eHD. You'll want to beef that up. After that, the ls4 is just like the ls6. You can throw on an intake from an lq4 or an ls2 to get a better flow rate, then an exhaust, bigger injectors, then a tune. My camaro is the one with the 3800 lol

      That sounds like a blast, though. I'm sure there are some huge restrictions exhaust-wise on the cars those come in. Full size cars typically are made to be as quiet as possible.
      I'd say just opening up the exhaust would do wonders on an engine like that.

      Yeah, bit odd. He may has well have went Motorcraft.
      You stick with Motorcraft in a Ford and AC Delco in GM.
      Need to save a few bucks for can't get Motorcraft, THEN you get Autolite for Ford.
      But if it runs good it runs good.
      Dude may have cross referenced a Motorcraft oil filter in place of the AC Delco oil filter for that 3800II, too ;-)
      I'm just a big believe in Motorcraft for Ford and AC Delco for GM. That goes for plugs and oil filters. Not oil or anything... not that Motorcraft oil isn't great.
      Motorcraft oil filters used to be made by Purolator (a great brand) and we'd cut them open and find that it was a mix of two of the top tier Purolator oil filters.
      I don't trust auto-manufacturers when it comes to oil because it's purely EPA BS trying to make us run 5W-20 or 0W-20, while the EXACT same engine across the country will call for a 5W-40 or 15W-40 or even 20W-50.
      So, keep that 20 weight oil out of your cars. That's an American thing pushed by politicians paid out by lobbyists.

    • @JulianA-tr6pt
      @JulianA-tr6pt 7 дней назад

      @@JustAGuy85 Some auto brand oil filters are also just mid-quality, when compared to some of the nicer filters (Wix, Mobil1 extended performance, and yes, Fram ultra synthetic. Ignore the brand sadly tainted by the orange junk. This one is a good filter.). Depends on the type of course.
      I've seen some Motorcraft (and Purolator) pleat split and filter medium warp/collapse. Common for Purolator, I've read many times. Delcos are Champs I believe, and seem good.
      They're leagues above the cheap orange Frams or no name junk though. I'd use em if there weren't any Wix, M1, or Ultra Synth filters in stock. I wish Wix were more common in stores, come to think of it.

    • @JustAGuy85
      @JustAGuy85 7 дней назад

      @@JulianA-tr6pt Yeah, I know Wix is one of those great brands. There are a few Purolator brands, like Purolator One and whatnot, and like ya said, Motorcraft filters are made by Purolator. They are a mix of two types of Purolator last I checked.
      I don't cut open all my filters, but of the ones I have cut open, I haven't personally seen any issues or quality problems.
      I still just tend to stick with Motorcraft with Ford and AC Delco with GM.
      Unfortunately, my Motorcraft filter is for an 86 F-150 5.0 EFI... so it's the FL-1A, not the nicer FL-820s with the higher quality ADBV material. But it does hold a lot of oil, it's quite the large filter. I've cut those open a handful of times and posted online, people seemed to like what they saw.
      But that doesn't mean I haven't had an issue on one I didn't cut open and didn't realize it, of course.
      Yeah, the Mobil1 EP filters are supposed to be exceptionally well made. And I've never used a Wix but they have a great reputation. Maybe I'll give one of those a shot. On the other hand, I hate to fix something that isn't broken.

      What? Brother, we are the only people truly supporting the 3800 still! Unfortunately, the 3800 vehicle has been out of production for over a decade now, but we are STILL supporting the platform and making NEW parts that just came out months ago and currently redesigning MULTIPLE parts to bring to the market. To say ZZPerformane fell off because of parts that either A) people wouldn't spend the money on, or B) we couldn't source the parts for....that just isn't accurate. The 3800 is ramping up again, but unfortunately as they are crashed, sold off, mistreated, etc there are fewer and fewer of them on the road. The OG days in the early 2000s were the most popular, but don't think we stopped supporting the platform because something is out of stock.

    Yeah, good mods.
    Right after you replace the intake/head gasket that they all blow.
    Don't get me wrong.
    Internally... the 3800 (I and II) are solid engines as far as pistons, rods, crankshaft. I mean, so long as you aren't throwing 80 psi at them lol.
    But, take a stock 3800II (NA) and those suckers "could' run forever getting 32-35mpg on the highway.
    But they had the worst design flaw. They ALL blow a gasket. I used to hear it was because people didn't change the dex-cool coolant out before 100k mile because it was "rated" for that. So I changed mine (flushed and everything myself) every 40k miles.
    I was ON TOP of maintenance. I was an early maintenance kinda guy on that car. It was my great aunt's, she gave it to my grandmother, then I got it. Had ilke 97k miles in 2017. It's a 2000 model. Stored in a climate controlled basement under the house with a concrete floor and dehumidifier. Always about 60F in there.
    Whatdya know? Losing coolant. Missing. White team coming out the tailpipe. Fuel economy down. Take the oil cap off while it's running and it sounds like a vacuum cleaner. Uses a quart of oil ever 600-800 miles.
    I hate GM. Gimme a 4.6 SOHC 2v ANY DAY over a 3800II. I'd take a Crovn Vic over a Park Ave 10/10 times. Might not have the nice looks nor the creature comforts... but they are bullet proof.

      Sorry, can't help it. I went Ford guy a long time ago when I got a $1200 1994 Ford Thunderbird LX at an auction. 4.6 SOHC HO (same as the Mustang GT engines) with the 4R70W transmission. 8.8" rear end. IRS.
      It needed a MAF sensor and transmission fluid change. I ran it hard. ZERO other issues. ZERO. I just did maintenance. Oil, plugs, fuel filter.
      Yes, Ford's are not as "fast" as GM's, not back in those days. These days, yeah, the 10-speed auto Mustangs smoke everything, but I'm talking back then.
      My 4.6 V8 had 205 horsepower. My 3800II has 205 horsepower lol. Biggest difference is the 4.6 had 265 ft-lbs torque and the Buick 3800II had 225 ft-lbs torque. I pulled many hills in OD with a 3.08:1 rear end in that Thunderbird that the Buick HAD to downshift in.
      I mean, not a huge prob, it still got 32-34+ mpg while the 4.6 got more like 26mpg at best on the highway.
      But it NEVER had an issues and it'd go across the country and back with zero worries.
      The best mods you can do to a 3800 II is sell it and buy a Ford.

      @@SUETV940 It's not a "small" problem. It's an all day job. No, not 24 hours, but "all day" as in, it'd take me the better part of a day to fix it. This isn't your old school RWD V8 in an F--150. It's crammed in there sideways and I don't care who you are, it's not a fun job. Replaced 3 intake/head gaskets on the 3.1's (like in the Lumina and Monte Carlo from the late 90's) 3x times.
      They blew them, too. They were more of a combo gasket. The gasket was part intake/part head gasket if I remember correctly. So, they blew the intake gasket, but there was more to it than that to repair it.
      I've been working on cars for exactly 22 years. There comes a point you just get absolutely sick of it. All you want to do is change plugs, oil, flush coolant, change transmission fluid... basic stuff. I mean, even changing alternators and other accessories aren't bad.
      But I literally get SICK when it comes to jobs that take more than an hour. It's not a small job, so let's just drop that condescending BS and quit pretending like you know how to work on cars.

      @JustAGuy85 3 месяца назад

      @@SUETV940 And I typed all that to say "Ford > GM" all day, every day. From the ride to the engines to the transmission to the rear end. In these years, you could have a Ford with a 4.6 V8, if it's auto, a 4R70W (FAR superior to GM's 4L60E or ANY GM auto transmission) and a Ford 8.8" rear end. They're bullet proof.
      This GM is falling apart all over whereas that 1994 Thunderbird @ 160k miles had zero issues. ZERO issues.
      I think I'd rather stop leak this Buick, sell it, and buy an older Ford.
      I will say the Park Ave looks better than a Crown Vic, but... who cares? I'd rather know I can make my 800 mile round trip every month than have to borrow a car "just in case" lol.
      There's a reason cop cars were Crown Vics, taxis are Crown Vics and other companies use Crown Vics. They are the most reliable platform you can get. Even the older stuff, like my 1986 F-150 5.0 EFI with the NP435 trans/NP208 T-case/Dana 44 front/Ford 9" rear (3.50:1) is bullet proof. Find a 1986 Chevy 1500 that isn't blowing blue smoke like a train with a blown 700R4 tranny in it. Actually, it probably would have a TH350... also junk. C4 > TH350. C6 and the TH400 are both tough, though. But a C4 will outlast a TH350 all day, every day. Same for the later model Chevy trucks. They put 4L60E's in their 1/2 ton trucks, their V6 Camaros, their V8 Camaros, their C5 Vettes, etc. I've pulled a 4L60E out of every single one of those I mentioned working in a garage.
      GM is trash. Yes, in those years, they'd smoke a Ford in a drag race. Then they'd need to be towed home by the Ford.
      What do they throw in hot rods? C6 transmissions and 9" Ford rear ends. Then they bolt it all up to a disgusting 350 V8 that needs to be rebuilt every 10k miles. Coulda had a 408W stroker motor, instead, but people have deep pockets, I reckon.
      Even the LS1 fbodies are junk. 99% junk with a strong engine. An engine that has failures all around it. An engine that will also bend push rods if you hit red line too many times lol.
      Yeah, I can't stand GM and I'll type about it ALL day long. I've got years of stories about how trash they are.
      Oh oh... they made one great platform. The Cavalier. Reliable as all get out. No transmission issues. Great fuel economy. The 2.2 Ecotec can keep on chugging along without any issues and the transmission is solid.
      But who wants to drive that around? You'd get crushed like a tin can if anything hit you. Still, though, credit where credit is due. Great platform. Pretty much the same engine in the Chevy S-10 from those years, which is another great platform.
      I guess GM can make a decent automobile... if they keep it under 120 horsepower and don't stick more than 4 cylinders in it.
