Awesome stain as usual. I'd love to see your take on Gibson's "desert burst" finish. It's one of their most inconsistent finishes, it changes from year to year and from model to model, but I always end up liking it for some reason, even if it never looks the same.
I just bought a cheap Guitar kit, It's a version of the LP with flame top, Mahogany body with Mahogany neck and Head stock, I would love to try the lemon burst or brown fade, what would you suggest for the neck and head stock staining, I will be using Angelus Dyes with a Tru Oil finish.
Another great video thank you Can I ask would these colours work on spalted maple? I was going to do a midnight blue after watching another of your videos but think this would enhance the grain more?
Hello, Derek. Quick question... Have you done any videos on sanding back and restaining a guitar that has already been stained previously? I've been looking all over RUclips and have not really been able to find anything about this subject.
I'm on my first guitar kit build and I botched the stain. What do sanding grit do you recommend to remove the stain and hopefully protect a veneer top?
@@bigdguitars thanks! And thank you so much for educating everyone about Angelus dyes. These dyes are the real deal. So much better than others out there with rich color and no blotching.
I'm planning to do my first refinish job with stain (videos like yours are an inspiration) and I was thinking of putting a maple veneer on the guitar, do you have any tips on how to work with that? I imagine I'll want to sand as little as possible since the veneer is paper thin (0.5 mm)
I have a big figured maple that I want to turn into a keyboard tray for my wife. Its got some neat patterns, but most the ppl online finishing the figured wood are using like the cream of the crop. Keyboard tray want to stay fairly natural looking, but I want it to pop a little. (My wife can't stand the smell of anything that comes in a bottle that you can't eat haha.....
Im suprised by that cause its probly the LEAST smelliest of all the finishs I have used to date. Tru-oil, Tung-oil, minwax wipe on poly I feel are good for gas off .. The spray can rustolium I've been using ... whoah its pretty toxic. And that body came out nice !!
@@bigdguitars Sorry l was not clear. I meant a Telecaster style ash Burl top from Solo Music Gear. Still waiting for it but, I believe these are veneer top.
@@bigdguitars … Thanks Brother, We’re doing well… Have you thought about trying another Hydro-Dip guitar??? Might be a good winter time basement project…👍👌🤘🏼
That is a realistic price Derek! Still interested in that neck through walnut/maple firebird you built years ago. Would you still do a project like that?
Yellow and brown. That's how I decide which direction my underpants go. Yellow in the front, brown in the back.🤣 Please don't block me. Beautiful figuring on that wood. I only have one guitar that costs more than that body. Lol I have eleven. 😂
“Deep figger”? I think it’s figure. EXAMPLE, “”This guitar has a nicely figured maple top”. I don’t think Figger is a word. Otherwise, keep up the good work.

Beautiful lemon burst, Derek! African mahogany has a really awesome grain! Well done!
Seen a few of the build vids, you have a natural flare for guitar building, watch out PRS. Great channel, cheers man.
it looked plain at the neck end, when the yellow went on i was screaming stop! its GORGEOUS! But the brown just took it 1 step further! WELL DONE!!!
That is one GORGEOUS top Derek! WOW!
thank you
I love this Amber color on that grain - Wow! I want one with P90s!
That turned out looking good!
Got to say this is my favorite stain to date!!
thanks buddy!
One of the best you’ve done!
thanks buddy!
Great flame
Yes!!! This is like Ibanez Vintage Violin or PRS McCarty Glow...well, close enough anyway!
Lemon drop is beautiful and classy
thanks buddy!
That looks killer!!
A video on wood/dye color combinations would be great.
Great video, this yellow really pops ! My wife too hates the smell of tru-oil
Looks great!
That is so beautiful.
Very nice
I like it! Gives me an idea on my finish for my simi hollow.
Well done Big D!🎯
thank you

What kind of sanding sealer do you use?
Amazing. I have a Les Paul VOS lemon burst. I have never seen it on a Tele. I think you would need a roasted maple neck, alt. rosewood
what is the composition of your dye? i found fabric and leather dye in my city but they are all very thick
SWEET
Hi. I can’t seem to get leather dyes to work the way you do. Do you dilute them with water or alcohol to get lighter shades?
Nice color
I'm just learning how to do this...what kind of alcohol is best for diluting the dye? Thanks!
Lovely job! Have you ever experimented with milk paint or similar finishes? I'd be very interested to learn how to get good results with those.
Milk paint… I’ll have to research this type of finish. Haven’t heard of it.
@@DTaylorGuitars I think Millimetric Instruments and Schorr Guitars both use it, it gives a beautiful matt finish.
For the "really diluted light brown", is that diluted with the Angelus clear solvent? Any idea on what the ratio was?
give some prices !!! pls
How do you dilute the brown?
How much do you dilute the brown?
How did the body end up looking orange?
Is this the acrylic dye or the alcohol based dye? Great Work - sweet home Chicago!
I am trying to get it close to Prince’s Telecaster.
yea thats a classic

Basic question - if I use leather dye and I don't like the result, can I sand it off? Even if it has soaked in after a few days/weeks/months?
Another great video thank you

Beautiful work! Would you recommend a grain fill before doing a finish like this with an ash or other open grain bodies?
Thanks in advance!
Beautiful. Did you grain fill the mahogany before stain?
I'm on my first guitar kit build and I botched the stain. What do sanding grit do you recommend to remove the stain and hopefully protect a veneer top?
Are you using the leather dyes? Or suede dyes?
What did you dilute the brown with? Thanks
Thanks for turning me on to Angelus dyes. The stuff blows the competitors out of the water. Quick question. How high do sand before applying the dye?
up to 320. Anything more than that you end up polishing the wood.

yea you can't sand a veneer. if you do you loose some of that depth.
