I love the hydraulic clutch !!! 2019 FLHR Got the softbrake lever so the friction zone isn’t 10 miles out. Shit is mad smooth and consistent When I go for my next ride I’ll have to find a clean low-ish mile 2020 sinxe that’s the last year with the hyro clutch
Hygroscopic was the term you were looking for. I'm a facilities engineer, so I personally love it when you share the "real world struggles". The "awe shit moment" you had with the grinding job is definitely a personal "been there, done that" that I can relate to. When you get the new cover, you should take the scratched up cover and put it on the buffing wheel with some compound and practice and experiment with repairing the scratch. Hell, maybe fill the scratch by welding it and see how it buffs out then re-chrome the part. Nice video showing others how to be self-reliant in a real world way. You come off honest and handy by showing the "whole thing" mistakes and all. Seems to me you fix things on the regular, maybe even for a living like me.
Thanks, yeah I couldn't remember which it was as far as hydrophilic or hydroscopic. I've always been a mechanic or repairman, I even used to repair medical equipment.
Before I bought my Street Glide I test rode a used one because it had apes on it and I wanted to get a feel for those before deciding if they were for me. I did like them, but the bike had a hydraulic clutch, which I am definitely not a fan of. Luckily for me, Harley went back to cable clutches on the baggers. I’ve always worked on my own vehicles, starting back in 1985. Never owned a bike before this year, so I’ve never worked on one. I plan to once my warranty runs out, but it’s a little intimidating since it’s a whole new experience. Good news is, I get to buy some new tools geared specifically towards motorcycles!
There's a reason they went back to cable.my 15 toad glide on a long trip decided to leak all the clutch fluid out of the sight glass,all over everything. 15 roadglide.i was pissed,bike still under warranty at that time,harley said because of handle bars being changed, no warranty!so disappointing when you pay so much for these bikes!
I currently went through the same issue on my 19 Limited where the clutch seemed like it was frictioning even after the lever was fully release and a second later it engaged with a light jolt. This was a week after I had bought the bike in for a full 15k service e.g. 3 hole oil, front & rear brakes and I also requested a Hydraulic flush on all three. I actually feel the Tech screwed something up in the process b/c I bought the bike April 2023 and ran 100% for 11k. After they looked it over and thought it was the Master Cylinder and had it re-built but the issue wasn't resolved after the Tech rode it and he let me ride it. They are now saying its what I believe is called the actuator behind the cover where the bleeder is was intermittently not working correctly of which they found a couple of the clutch plates were burned up. They are in the process of replacing everything under warranty. I'm hoping this is not going to kill my riding season.
@ontheothersideoftheroad That's rough, I hope it works out fast as riding season has already started. What likely happened is the previous owner never flushed and filled any of the fluids. All I know is if you can do the hydraulic clutch flush and fill yourself, do it every 2 years like clockwork and it'll save you plenty of headaches. The same goes for the brake fluid, water will get into both and wreck things. Thank you for watching and again, I hope it gets remedied ASAP for you!
If you have ABS you will not be able to DIY brake bleeding. Having said that many will claim otherwise and there are many YT videos showing how to. The crux of that problem is you cannot purge the ABS module without some software and hardware to connect to the bike. There have been brake failures linked to this issue, and a recall, so it matters to some.
For just a couple of hundred dollars, you can purchase the ITM HD1 tool that purges the ABS module. i have the RSDS system and the tool works great. Hydraulic clutches are super smooth and other manufacturers have used them for years. I wouldn't hesitate on either system. Maintenance is just different. Only Harley could run cable clutches over a hundred years and mess it up when they brought them back with a plastic piece that fails.
I’m just shy of 20 (19,500) Guess my bike thing this winter is that service (I’ve yet to do any of the HD services .. do it myself .. BUT the 20k is a biggie and they do a LOT.. and the way things are going I def wannna keep my bike healthy
If you have ABS brakes you will not be able to flush the ABS pump fluid. You have to use a scan tool capable of putting the pump into a flush mode. Otherwise you are just bleeding the fluid around the ABS pump.

Just changed all my Brake and Clutch fluids at 20k milestones

That was one of the reasons I looked for a H-D bagger without ABS.
IF YOU HAVE ABS... You can NOT Do the brakes

Have you checked if your bike is on the clutch master cylinder recall?
All the recalls/service bulletins had already been fixed before I bought my Road King, I made sure to check before I bought it.
