Pcie is backward compatible for most settings . feasibly could go as far back as pcie gen 1 or 2 on a core 2 duo system for real. The card would auto detect what bandwidth it can use . Feels bad man. losing out in all aspects. weird choice unless its for prebuilt systems/new low end chips so the other 12 lanes can be used for ssds or anything else. odd
My current setup from 2019 has a 5700XT in it, which did cost 440€ back then. The 6500XT perhaps gets sold for the same price here. We are going backwards now. Can't wait for the new ATI Rage 128, which will launch next year.

@@thelightsilent 6500XT being a bad product, doesn't mean Radeon are only capable of making bad products. No idea why that needs to be said, but some people don't think critically, or in good faith, I guess.
GN's Disappointment Builds are my favorite.
@@thelightsilent Sadly for that to be a thing AMD needs to become as predatory with their software and anti-consumer like Nvidia for it to work.
But apparently AMD is stupid enough to believe that just scamming their consumer base is good enough.

@@kingplunger6033 yep.
3090ti As Well
It's a good strat, they have made it terrible enough that it's bad for mining.
Also the die size is real small, AMD should have as many of these as people want to buy at MSRP.
I have a PCIe 2.0 system and I think it will perform terribly because of the x4 so I can't really consider this, which is too bad. Maybe a new system with this card until prices come down is the right answer. Remember that RTX 3050 will be $249 +80% = $450 so more than double this (and its performance is not double).
It's already being scalped on Ebay for $400-550.
The 6500XT *really* feels to me like it's a laptop-intended MX450 competitor being pushed way, way too far.
Here's my guess. Navi 24 was intended to be a ~30-40W low-end GPU that gets put in mid-range, semi thin-and-light laptops. It's supposed to be faster than the iGPU while being cheap and requiring little board space or cooling.
You might imagine it clocked at ~1.2GHz. It would probably draw 1/3 the power and have 1/2 the performance. It would crush the MX450 at those clocks (~2500 Time Spy vs. ~1700 for the MX450). It would also crush iGPUs (~2x compared with Iris Xe 80EU or Ryzen 5000 APUs).
PCIe x4 and 64-bit memory makes sense for this segment; board space and cost are both big problems, and at half the clocks you wouldn't be running into bottlenecking. The MX450 is also 64-bit and every use I am aware of is PCIe x4.
No video decode makes sense for this segment. These laptops always have an iGPU that would have video decode anyway.
So, my guess is, AMD designed Navi 24 for the MX450 segment. But they found out that it clocks better than expected if you throw voltage at it. That doesn't do much good in a laptop (no one wants a 100W GPU in a laptop with less performance than an RX 580).
Normally, a 100W GPU with the performance of an RX 580 would be DOA in the desktop space in 2022. But we're not in normal times. We're in a time where almost no one can buy a GPU even at the crazy inflated MSRPs.
So someone gets a "good" idea at AMD. Let's take this low-end MX450-competitor GPU designed for laptops. Let's throw voltage and clock at it until we've gotten every drop of performance out of it, even if we are way on the bad end of the efficiency curve. Now, for very little R&D cost, we have something that's basically the performance of the RX480, at slightly lower power. And because it was designed for dirt cheap laptops (64-bit memory, PCIe x4) , the boards are cheap for the AIB manufacturers.
AMD could probably sell this thing for $100 and still have good margins for both themselves and the AIB partners. But of course, they don't have to. They can set a $199 MSRP and they will *still* fly off the shelves, because there isn't anything better right now.
All of this makes perfect sense from AMD's perspective. That doesn't mean we need to like it. AMD is cashing in, just like NVIDIA is cashing in. The only things that are going to change this are:
(A) Some kind of mining bust that floods the market with used cards
(B) Intel launching Arc, it being actually competitive, and Intel deciding not to play along with the high prices (good luck on that)
(C) Reduction in demand for GPUs
The impeding ARC launch to mobile being more competitive than AMD expected is likely why these chips are being redirected.
This is exactly what happened
You are confirmed correct, my friend. See the tech news outlets.
@Captain_Morgan For sure, there's a 25% tariff on this card so AMD is only getting 160 at most in revenue from every card sold (to my knowledge they don't benefit from AIB markup, they need the AIB's to make the PCB's and casings for the cards).
200 bucks is probably the absolute lowest they could sell it for honestly.
Yeah making a whole new die design with a larger die and lower clocks would make for a better/more efficient product, but also a MUCH more expensive one. They took the best option to satisfy a hungry market selling as cheap as they can and people are shitting on them for it. The small die also means they can flood the market to bring prices down for people.
This card for 200-270 on PCIe 4.0 (most with 3.0 mobos have a card already) is way better for a new buyer than paying 350-400 for a 5 year old used card. You also have to pay shipping and taxes for said card on eBay which Newegg doesn't charge in my state. It absolutely will alleviate the stress on the market and I fully expect prices on used 1650's to come down now due to this.
how does PCIe X4 make sense in a desktop card?
It's so funny that AMD removed their press release post saying that 4GB of RAM isn't enough for modern games around this card's release
4gb is fine for 1080p. As long as you don't need every single setting maxed out. It will be fine for a couple more years.

Yes, probably should have crippled it slightly less (maybe full pci-e 3 bandwidth?) and kept the video decoding functionality. Make it the RX 6500. Then have a RX 6500 XT retail that has 6GB and maybe another 10% performance.

This is a good reminder that companies are profit driven, not consumer advocates. People are generally OK with that but not when they're being lied to or being sold a 6500xt.

Well keeping in mind that prices on material and components has risen and shipping is out of control amd's profit is kinda low, they just wanted to give the sub 300 market a shot not to get shouted at by gamers but they just dug their own grave. AIBs are mostly profiting by slapping whatever kind of alloy possible to the pcb or adding triple rx 6800-style cooler just to screw with us. Msi, sapphire and asus dual should be kinda ok between 270/320 euros but still a 50%+ increase in mspr is wild. Having a pcie gen3 platform I might or might not upgrade my r9 380 to this abomination or maybe hope that the 3050 won't be 400+ euros or, even better, wait for the alchemist lineup to light my pc back again. I would be interested in seeing some scenarios investigated, where this card is used as an extra output, or as a reinforcement beside another card, or pair of cards in a multi GPU setup. I wonder if you could find a use case where it turns out to be good for ... something.
Can it be used as a secondary card for mining or FoldingAtHome in a system where your primary GPU is purely reserved for your gaming needs?
What kind of PC case would be able to adequately handle the thermal load of that particular use case?

Hey Steve,
Any chance you could possibly test out the 6900XT with warzone? Something has been wrong lately with either the game itself or the AMD drivers. Setting the texture graphics to anything but low causes major stuttering and bad frame times. The only way to fix it is to set the graphics texture setting to low. I can't figure out if this is a game engine issue or a amd driver issue. I'm leaning more towards AMD as this was a problem prior to the new update on the old map.
If you and the team have the time to check this out that would be great.
Thank you!
They sell in Switzerland for around 170.- and for 150-160 with a discount. If anyone is building a modern budget setup using pcie4 this might be worth a try, this card is designed to compete with the rtx 3050 and it comes close for a much lower price.

Thank you for giving such an in depth review. I'm currently looking for a replacement card for an aging 1050ti. This card might be the best holdover card for a long time. 6+ months. I can't possible imagine an alternate use for this card other than a temporary holdover card. I agree completely that lacking encoding decoding would mean this would be an almost useless as a pass me down card. If I knew things would be this bad, I would've grabbed the rx580 when I had the chance. Looking at all the features that this chip is missing, it looks like a repurposed silicon meant to go into low power, slim laptops where the machine would have access to features and the low throughput wouldn't be a hurt with the lack of pci-e lanes.
It's the cheapest brand new card you can buy that can run modern games. It's a no brainer for something brand new. It beats the GTX 1650 that costs more.
Yeah, I agree with your judgement. Covid times suck.
Intel unintentionally chose the best time to launch their new generation of GPUs. After seeing this waste of silicon hitting the market they are in the best imaginable position honestly. The main issue will be the same though: they rely on external fabs instead of their own.

Have we ever been in a situation where hardware had to be stretched for such a long time? I'm genuinely curious if we have reasonable estimates for the lifespan of GPU silicon or power components, whatever might fail first. Nearing 6-7 years for the older alternatives sounds like it might get into somewhat sketch territory.
Can you expect a GPU to last 10 years if used reasonably? 15 years? At what point would the used market be too risky to consider? Is the average silicon lifespan reduced if you move to smaller and smaller transistor size?
I have a I7 4790 thats been running 24/7 for the past 3 years and been used for mostly gaming since it came out. Its still as good as it was.
Dont worry about hardware dying as long as you got some sort of protection like a good PSU or surge protection
No data on smaller silicon yet, but in 2019, I was still running an HD7970 that I bought used and that card was released in 2011.
For me, I noticed some degradation in the maximum clock speed and memory OC.
Outright failing is very rare, and tech moves so fast that these older products are simply not performant enough for anyone to want them.
Anything older than GCN1 or Keplar is pretty much unusable both due to lack of driver support, lack of modern API support, and just overall insufficient performance.
High end GPUs die earlier, often before they become obsolete. Low end GPUs will last far beyond the point where they're obsolete. you can find tons of low end GPUs from like 13-15 years ago still working but you'd struggle to find any working GTX 480's unless they didn't see much use, i hear a lot of 980ti's have been dying recently as well. The larger the die the sooner it dies is a good rule of thumb.
The key here will be heat. Probably a good idea to not be running overclocks if your hardware is a bit older. Keep your cards clean. Consider repasting with quality paste if its been a few years. A lot of time failures on a board will be do more to solder migration or capacitor failure then any other issue. Until 3 years ago, I still had pcs from the early 90s still running due to needing them for specific test and control hardware.
I've slightly underclocked, and increased fan speed (all easily via AMD RS), and do not play AAA 3D games for now, with the hopes my aging RX 470 will live Forever. Sad reality. Have eyes on 6600 or 6700 but not ever paying over $500.
if it was a 100$ card, it would be an upgrade to the RX 560 4gb. Sorta like the 6600XT at 200$ would be a nice RX 580 replacement.
The 6600xt isn’t great but it’s faster than a 2070, it’s not a 200 dollar card
As someone who somewhat bad at pc building, this whole pci stuff, can i put it in my motherboard that i used with my rx580 before it died? Not like different slottability or anything, right? Its just still go in the standard MB stuff?
They've got them for sale at microcenter for $400 right now
I remember the time when amd gives a free game with their gpus, now they give less bandwidth
Yea my father got the RX480 8GB back when it was 259€ in Sweden with Doom (2016) that was still 60€ on Steam, now you get no game, no hardware video decoder/encoder, and you get no more performance but you get to pay twice!
Its depressing as F!
I mean they were literally giving away farcry 6 with gpus a few months ago.
AMD could have just re-released the 5500xt on 6nm or even the 590 with higher clocks and it would be a much better product. What is wrong with them? They kill goodwill towards their brand with nonsense like this.
They bought their goodwill back then and are now selling it to make money. Thats what happens when you are "On top"
It's possible this was only intended as a mobile GPU and that's why it's only x4 and missing codecs.
@@henrath that doesn't change that AMD was foolish for releasing it. Bad move, AMD.

@Alpine but they aren't on top nvidia smashes them at every turn and intel is the king again for now.
I wonder how it would compare to the RX 5500 XT, with current drivers. When the rx5500xt came out, it was on par with the rx 580, but after a year of driver updates it was consistently 15-20% better on average in updated tests, even outperforming the rx590. This means that the RX 6500 XT would theoretically undrperform the prior gen by a wide margin, pribably due to memory and pcie bus bandwidth restrictions. The 5500 XT at least had a 128 bit memory interface with gddr6, for total bandwidth of 224 GB/s. The RX 6500 XT has only 144 GB/s memory bandwidth. Pretty pathetic.
The 5500xt was an x8 lane pcie4 device, but under pcie 3.0, 8 lanes was still enough to feed the vram buffer.
This is the sharpest signal yet of how fucked the gpu market is.
Also the 4gb 5500xt would be more expensive to make since its die is 35% bigger with same or double the memory
With regards to the Squarespace-promo, how many cats does Steve have?
This is crazy. I upgraded to a 3080 from 1070 last year and no way in hell that I am going to sell my old 1070 now because if my 3080 fails for whatever reason I can at least go back to my 1070 and it will still be faster than these "potato flavored" GPUs they are selling these days!
At this rate, the industry might consider going back to software rendering and skip GPUs all together!! :S
On a more serious note, I think if you are stuck with an older GPU, it might be a good time to explore older catalogue of PC games if you never had the chance. Hopefully the current sad situation will also push developers to optimize games to the max to squeeze every once of performance out of existing hardware instead of relying on upgrades (but I wouldn't hold my breath).
Wise words, I just RMA'd my 3080ti for a busted fan - thanking the Stars above I kept my 2060 KO, absolute life saver, can still do everything I was doing before, just not as fast lol!

This is happening because the market aka consumers are buying everything that gets put on the selves anyway. Yea I bought a Used GTX970 in January 2020 just before anyone figured out what was gonna happen with prices.
I had to buy a new 700/900/1000 series blower fan for it, made a new blower shroud for it and some new thermal pads, card was working but needed servicing.
Costed me another 25€ so 65€ total for a now custom GTX970 card.
At the time they went for 70€ used in sweden.
Now a RX6500 goes for 400€ in sweden and there selling, no joke people are picking them up, there where a few still for sale but the brands "reviewed" here that where 400€ where sold out in the same day that I can see, there are other brands still for sale at the same price but where talking like 2 cards per store so not a lot of stock left.
Also funny how the GTX970 can be had for around 100€ used last I checked and it will perform better or worse but about the same as the RX6500 AND it has a Video Decoder and Encoder that dont suck! Very competitive card to do some streaming on or video encoding on, WAY faster then my RX5700 encoder but at least that one has one, the RX6500 do not LOL!
Reminds me that my first card with an onboard decoder was the GeForce 8600GTS 256Mb for my HTPC like 15 years ago and that thing was like 120USD I would think and my HTPC ran windows XP then.
But for 400 USD or € you dont even get that 15+ years later XD
Yea I think a GTX970 is a better buy, from my testing they also overclock pretty well so would not surprise me if the GTX970 overlocked would beat the RX6500 in games and on top of that it can encode videos as fast as a 8 core CPU at 4Ghz.
I kind of questioned me buying an RX5700 on launch day for 419€, also buying a GTX970 that needed servicing but in the end I got them for a bargain, did not see that coming.

The best part of this test is that the 580 is now 20% faster than a 1060 on average and has actually improved in value over time compared to AMD's entire line up after it.
to be fair, the 580 was released in 2017
I bought an ex-miner 8GB RX580 off ebay in 2018 for in the $200s and now it's worth in the $400s. Or, it probably would be worth $400s if it hadn't had such a hard life. These days it's on life support with a water cooler and minor underclock to keep it from crashing under load. Either way, it's still good enough that I'm not in any hurry to replace it.
When the new 6000 series AMD cards launched, I heard that AMD vastly improved the Linux drivers alongside the launch. Do those improvements carry to older cards as well?
@@arnox4554 If I had to guess, probably not. GCN and RDNA/RDNA2 are different enough that they'd have to put development specifically into those cards, all of which are at least 5 years old. As nice as it'd be for AMD to support the very small percentage of total users that are on Linux that are also using GCN architecture, that's the definition of a glass of juice that just isn't worth the squeeze.
Though AMD has always been the Linux champions, so maybe they'll do it purely to keep that mind/market share niche they've held for so long. Have you tried looking into Lisa's crystal ball to find out how she was advised?
@@arnox4554 GCN has always done better on Linux than RDNA so you don't need those fixes
Video editing philistine here - could someone explain why a lack of a video encoder would be bad? I might be getting this card or a GTX 1650 to replace an aging GTX 950. I don't do much video editing if at all, but I do use Inkscape and some other similar software like Adobe Illustrator.

What an absolutely shocking state the PC market now finds itself in. With zero competition both Nvidia and ATI just aren't even bothering to try any longer. I guess Nvidia and ATI would say "why should I put into massive production the 1660 super (or RX580) for say the $200 price point, when I can peddle absolute turd products at stupid money as a "NEW CARD!!" which provides benchmarks worse features than cards we used to produce over a decade ago?" "Hell no, we can produce a really crap card which will cost us peanuts to manufacture and sell it for the same price!!!"
When if they gave two hoots about they're customer base they'd actually deliver something half decent at a half decent price. I guess at this point we're asking too much from Intel for DG2 to be any different?
I built a new pc at the beginning of 2021. Its still got its 2014 card in it AMD/ATI.............any idea why that is???
This is what got Intel in trouble with Ryzen. They didn't have a reason to be competitive and just sat back giving all 10-15% up lifts at 4cores. I hoping Intels new GPUs come In and just smash Nvidia and AMD into pieces and put them to shame! I don't even need a new GPU but if Intel brings something decent to the table I'll purchase one just to support them!
@@NCCountryLiving Zero incentive for Intel to bother though. It's a seller's market, so Intel's market share for the near future is going to be tied to their manufacturing capacity rather than actually producing good products. It's only in the long term that they'll want to undercut the competition.
@@BlackGateofMordor true dat. This product is pretty bad but you look at Nvidia releasing similar SKU's with a bit more RAM at a markup (MSRP btw), whos to stop intel from doing the same with their product stack.
Can you speak to only x4 lanes being part of AMD intention to handicap mining on this card? I understand their choice of vram and bus width with anti-mining in mind but not the x4 lanes.
Should the card gen4 work on Ryzen 3 3100 gen4 pcie with Asus tuf b450m plus gaming motherboard?
MSRP is a myth to me at this point. Also I find it silly to think my 1060 is nearly as good as a current gen card.

I guess the chips was supposed to be a mobile only chip. As such it is paired with a CPU including integrated graphics, which most likely have the encoders/decoders missing here. Still it is not a good upgrade solution for desktops.
That also makes sense because any cpu it would be paired with in a laptop would be modern enough for pcie gen 4
Yup, that would also explain the PCIx4 limitation. They probably designed this chip to run energy efficient at much lower clocks, in combination with CPUs that support gen4 (rembrandt/alder lake), and x4 lanes were perfectly sufficient to drive that chip.
That has been the rumour. On laptops it would be bottlenecked by TDP instead.
With the current GPU pricing and availability, this card sort of makes sense, but they could probably have improved it just a bit to make it more appealing. Still, it's new and will have support and warranty, something you won't get trying to buy an older used card.
Your games were mislabeled during some of the footage showcases.. Also its minor but you showed/labeled a 12700K not a KF.. Appreciate you guys working fast, but just keep in mind; you have the kind of audience that is okay waiting to make sure little things are corrected :)

I already have a decent gaming PC but I have a secondary PC with a Ryzen with integrated GPU. Is this a reasonable upgrade to get to a dedicated GPU setup without stretching the budget to $500?
I guess you have a 4 core amd but if it has 6 core or 8 then you will get bett fps with a better card - 4 cores might be a minimum for this card -for my ryzen 1200 (overclocked) i figured out that amd 5600-5700 are max it can play with everyting better would be cpu bottleneck -but amd 570 8gb does perform ok
This card is pretty much a failure and pretty embarrassing, can't wait for Intel Arc GPUs to hopefully shake up the discrete GPU market duopoly...

Speculation:
This is a high-margin card able to be manufactured en-masse for newer internet cafe computers. They stripped out the features you wouldn't need for basic esports gaming and left just enough performance for those games at 1080p while keeping power consumption low (when you have hundreds of computers in one building, this makes a big difference). These kinds of cards have existed for years, just never hit the US market. I bet there either is or will be a 70-ish watt version, single slot, decosted even more for OEMs/SIs. I'm wondering if the dual-slot overkill is just for the US market.
I thought that was what the RX 6400 was for? I could swear I just saw a chart that said that RX 6400 was OEM only.
And why would have they released it to the consumers' market, if it's meant to be used in internet cafes? The weird stuff made for internet cafes, like the GTX 1060 with 5GB of VRAM, aren't usually sold in the consumers' market, especially not outside Asia. Let's just face the reality, AMD knows that there's a market for 400-500€ (street price) GPUs that no one is satisfying, they just cut every corner in order to increase their margins and released this piece of shit. Radeon's reputation and fanboys' fantasies about AMD being the "good guys" be damned.
"They stripped out the features you wouldn't need for basic esports gaming and left just enough performance for those games at 1080p while keeping power consumption low". Basically exactly that, I think. It actually should be pwerfectly usable with pci-e 3.0 if you play games with settings that won't make vram a bottleneck. Not exactly 1080p max settings gpu, as if people didn't know that w/o me saying (looks like they actually didn't based on all them tests of pci-e 3.0 vs 4.0). Also it seems like 6500 xt is basically overclocked 6500m and it exists only cuz there's nothing cheap enough you can buy if you wanna just play some old games and only have like 200 bucks to buy a whole gpu
Its got no margin the shipping costs are almost a quater of the cars price half of the cost is memory and the rest is everything else
On a side note, and this is nitpicking, but you show Tomb Raider (at around 9:46) but list it as Cyberpunk.
This was a great review Steve, and thanks so much for doing PCIe 3.0 numbers too; I have 3.0 motherboard! And I was thinking, maybe AMD decided to do the 4x bandwidth instead of 8x because they were trying to make it even more unappealing for miners? I'm not sure how mining works, but I know they wanted to release a 4gig card so that it's unattractive for miners; And I'm thinking, cutting it down to a 4x bandwidth, makes it even more unattractive for miners, while still maintaining decent 1080p framerates for budget gamers? Just a thought haha!
even if they made it 4x lanes to dissuade miners, they use risers that turn whatever x lanes card into 1x anyways through mining risers, so it doesnt work out there either
It's not the lack of PCI-E lanes that would deter the miners, in this case it's the lack of VRAM and the absolutely atrocious memory bandwidth. You need a GPU with at least 6GB of VRAM to mine Ethereum right now, and it's mainly a VRAM intensive task where memory bandwidth matters the most. So on the plus side miners won't want this card, on the negative side AMD crippled it in so many other ways that a used card from 5 years ago is a better choice.
@@garethgobulcoque8668 see, you'd think that miners may only care for ETH, but there are a whooole lot more alt-coins worth mining on
I can’t wait for Intel’s GPUs to release for real. I will probably buy them even if they are objectively much worse, just so teams red and green don’t get the sales…even on a trashfire like this.

Great review, great intentional drop btw :D
What kind of uplift would u see running this card in a Ryzen system, on gen 4, allowing for smart access memory tho? Testing it on an Intel test bench seems somewhat unreasonable. Ok, testing it SOLELY on an Intel bench, seems unfair ig., is a better way to put that. I wholly get ur point here, btw... I'm just curious how much performance would be gained by allowing it to tap into SAM in an all AMD system.
Love the reasoning behind removing AV1 support and encoding/decoding features, AMD said they want to sell this card directly to gamers and don't want HTPC owners to buy up all the cards.Yes, HTPC builders are a threat now for games on the GPU market, good to know.
the reasoning is probably that this chip was never intended as a desktop GPU, but was targeted at low power mobile products. Paired with an APU that has all those features anyway and supports a PCIe4 interface it would have been an okay low end mobile GPU. AMD just took the opportunity of making the cheapest card they could make under current conditions, repurposed and heavily overclocked this tiny GPU best they could, to get out a high volume low end card that was never planned to be made before the market went bananas.
Are HTPCs in any way a significant market segment at all? In the age of Netflix and co, cheap and abundant smart TVs and Fire Sticks and Shield TVs and Apple TVs, etc... I would think HTPCs are extremely niche nowadays.
@@lajkutya only major reason for a HTPC is for full bitrate 4 and 8K, streaming sticks don't have the power do that.
Thats literally it, only the highest of end TVs really gain much out of full bitrate anyways
Appreciate your candor as always Steve, good review. Something I wonder about with respect to comparing $150 to $200 cards in terms of cost-savings and design decisions though - when is a $200 card actually a $150 card when accounting for inflation? There will come a point where $200 is the entry point for the market, even if we weren't in such unprecedented times in terms of GPU costs. With that being said I do think it's correct to call out AMD on this decision and it's crazy to me that a 1060 out performs a new GPU in 2021...
It's a shit review.
I think your one in-game footage capture label is wrong...It was showing Tomb Raider, but it stated Cyberpunk 2077 instead.
The funny thing about all this is that I'm looking to upgrade to a 2016 GPU from my current 2016 GPU..... I can't even put into words how stupid the GPU market is.
