  • We're reviewing and benchmarking the AMD RX 5500 XT video card in 4GB & 8GB capacities, featuring the Sapphire RX 5500 XT Pulse & Powercolor RX 5500 XT Red Dragon.
    Sponsor: Thermaltake Core P3 on Amazon (geni.us/v6j23)

    Or the GTX 1650 Super on Amazon (be careful to look at the Super, not the non-Super): geni.us/gIHL
    In this review, we're looking at the AMD RX 5500 XT video cards in both 4GB and 8GB capacities. These cards compare the most directly to the NVIDIA GTX 1650 Super, freshly released, and potentially the GTX 1660. The 1660 Super would be a price category jump to ~$250 and the RX 5700 would be a major shift, although we expect more cards from AMD to fill-in the gaps later.

    28:54 gonna have to stop you there Steve, it is possible to overclock fans! Fun fact, you can simply add a voltage booster inline with the fans to overclock them, and most cheapy case fans will survive upwards of 20v (since power = V^2/R, going to 24v gives you 4x the power). Warning though, I’ve had 1 fan blow up at 16v, so afterwards I removed the motor and replaced it with a 2204-2300kv brushless RC airplane/quadcopter motor and the cheap fan blades allow it to go to about 120-130w of power before the blades expand too much and hit the housing (so it’s now essentially a 10 amp rated 120mm case fan). Drill vent holes in the hub for airflow and zip tie the 30 amp speed controller somewhere. I use it for “air cooled” overclock testing. Granted, my 70mm EDF puts this to shame at 65 amps rated at 24v, but that’s a bit rediculous...
    If you want a voltage booster that’s plug and play let me know GN, I’ll solder on Molex connectors to both ends so all you do is plug it in between the PSU and the fan and adjust the trim-pot for the voltage you want. Or you can do the same with basically any cheap DC-DC boost converter (some have voltage displays which might be handy). I’ll also send you the fan if you want it (wear safety glasses please! and don’t stand in front of it), but I could probably sand the blade tips down a little so you can push more power before mechanical interference occurs. I made this like 3 years ago and it’s still working. You can have them for laughs if you want (like a comedy review laughing about noise levels or something, and include a Jesus hair blowing test, haha!), if you want em they’re yours!

    I would really like to see a revisit video on the 5500XT and 1650Super, because now in 2021 with drivers updated the 5500xt blows the 1650Super out of the water in nearly every title.

    • @World_Theory
      @World_Theory 3 года назад +8

      I'm actually considering the 5500 XT 8GB as an option for a relatively cheap computer build for getting started with 3D modeling in Blender, and hopefully some VR later after I earn more money doing irregular jobs. I also primarily wanted the computer to run Linux, though I might be forced to duel boot Windows on occasion.
      I don't anticipate doing a lot of rendering in Blender, because what I want to focus on is creating textured meshes, not pictures of textured meshes. The use case for them being games. So I don't mind less rendering power as long as it has the VRAM to render if I really need to.
      I don't have much interest in most VR games. But there is one specific, very versatile one, which has a lot of user generated content, that almost all my interest is focused on. It's Neos VR, not that I expect the name to be familiar. The user generated content is key important piece of information. Because that will mean that the content I'm likely to see will be highly variable in resource requirements. I have a fairly strong stomach, so I should be able to tolerate lower framerates in VR. And if it turns out to be too bad, I'll just try to save up for a GPU upgrade.
      What I really want, is a low cost, relatively recent computer, with an upgrade path that will get me into the requirements for doing the stuff I want to do. I don't currently have a modern computer, so even mid-low end will be a huge upgrade.
      I also want all AMD, for the open source drivers, because they should have good support for many years into the future, because the community can make it so.
      My last attempt to refresh an older computer failed, because I couldn't find properly updated Linux drivers for my 8+ year old Nvidia GPU. Because Nvidia is too secretive about their precious drivers. So the resolution was locked to a ridiculous tiny size, with an odd refresh rate, and no audio. Though the audio might have partially been the fault of the even older motherboard.
      I could have tried updating that computer with newer hardware. But the motherboard was far too old, and technology had moved on too much since it was made in about 2008 or earlier. I couldn't even find solid information on it.

      Well, that's why it's good that Steve from GN puts all this IN CONTEXT. We're talking about a budget card of $160 (4GB model) vs $200 (8GB model) so depending on the types of games you play and your total budget it may very well make more sense to put that $40 elsewhere. Perhaps you only intend that card to last a year or two anyway, then sell it for $100 or so and upgrade later. Not everybody has the same requirements so it's impossible to generalize.

    • @Armataan
      @Armataan 4 года назад +9

      @@photonboy999 you're ignoring the elephant in the room though. The $200 card will play new AAA games at low settings at 30-60hz in 5 years. The $160 will drop to 0hz from time to time on those same games, and consistently run under 30hz the rest of the time. Anandtech give an analysis of Amd's thinking in the Product Positioning & Competition section:
    "... some expectation management is in order here. While the RX 5500 XT replaces the RX 500 series within AMD’s immediate product stack, RX 5500 XT and Navi 14 are *not* meant to be upgrades for the RX 500 series. That is a job for the RX 5700 series.
    Instead, the RX 5500 XT is closer to an upgrade for the Radeon RX 560; Navi 14 is by and large the 7nm successor to Polaris 11. AMD has been selling the RX 580 and RX 570 cards for very cheap over the last 18 months, and while this has led to some great deals, it has admittedly distorted the market a bit.
    For the moment, at least, AMD isn’t looking to deliver substantially more performance at $160-$200 than they were before. Instead, it’s about delivering newer, more efficient technologies."
    and re. Nvidia:
    " ... the two companies are very narrowly and very specifically controlling their prices and product positioning, there’s not quite a 1:1 match between Radeon and GeForce parts right now.
    The 4GB RX 5500 XT is $10 more expensive than the GeForce GTX 1650 Super, and the 8GB RX 5500 XT is $10 cheaper than the GeForce GTX 1660. This also happens to pretty accurately reflect their relative performance: the 5500 XT can match wits with the 1650 Super, but it falls short of the 1660."

      Same here my RX5500XT ASUS OC Dual has an automatic OC up to 1965mhz and I paid 200 quid for her like a month ago. Power consumption doesn't tax my 450W PSU at all, noise is basically zero ... I love this card it was cheap it does ultra on all games at 1080p/60 and is happy to run undervolted with no performance drop. I much prefer this card over my 1660ti which I had nothing but problems with as it wants more power than I am willing to send it and that is WITHOUT any OC!

    Steve, it is extremely possible that their "fan profiling" issues in their drivers have existed since their Polaris lineup: I can't recall the LAST time my RX 480 started to either not spin, stay at a slower RPM (in game, even if I just told it to go faster at around 70 - 80C), or ramp up to 100% and then back down, as if it was still running a fan check (like in Sapphire TRIXX: another GPU overclocking software that needs a lot of work); the latter just happened several times in one. Fucking. *DAY*.
    Key note: I bought this amazing card since 2016; a few months after Polaris came out.

    I definitely agree with the drivers issue. All through the 2019 drivers the fan curves have been screwed. At the fourth node and onwards for manual curves the fans completely ignore the curve and ramp up a load, which really is my sole issue. Sapphire Trixx has been able to maintain lower temperatures at lower fan speeds somehow. I do love being able to set different wattman profiles for different games, even if amd doesnt detect them all (it doesnt seem to detect microsoft store games), and being able to set voltage and clock speeds for different loads in the profile is nice too.

      Honestly, from a laymen's perspective on a moderate/low budget I'd say the 1660 Ti is the only GPU out there right now that's sensibly priced! I've been looking around for the last few months and the lower end cards offer only a marginal gain on my old 970, and the prices aren't worth it. And then the higher end cards are priced like top-tier enthusiast grade stuff was a few years ago, and the current "mid range" like the 2060 or 5700 are priced like last gens high end stuff... the 1660 Ti is the only thing that stands out as a good value, and even that I'm looking for discounts on!

      Has been that way since the 290X came out. But OTOH nothing makes a card stay relevant longer than going with the higher VRAM option. You could spend money on OC variants, backplates and shiny RGB, but that VRAM upgrade actually helps kepping the card for another year. Don't believe me?
      Look at HD 7870, the 2GB models still run RDR2 on low, but the "base" 1GB doesn't. The rebranded versions sometimes even came with 4GB!
      Look at R9 285, yeah i know, forgotten little card, but it's 2GB variants are worthless by now. 380X was the same card but with 4GB, still very usable.
      R9 Fury only had 4GB, plus it had problems getting all its shaders utilized below 4K. 4GB in 4K was allright back in '15, but it's a stretch now.
      290X/390X are still in some charts on this video. Arguably, the GPUs aren't fast enough to process the textures and effects that would need 8GB. But the SOTR performance would surely be hit in the same way.
      So like i said, it always has been that way. Pay 20% more if you like to keep your card forever. Buy the cheaper card if you're upgrading every three years.

Compound that with how easy it is to get a relatively cheap, safe, high-ish wattage psu and you got a base for an emulation box and pretty decent 1440p gaming. The R9 Fury is a fun card, a pain to overclock, but still good enough in most instances.

    My takeaway is that the low-end just currently isn't very good. The 5700 and 5700XT provide about linear performance/price improvement compared to the 5500XT. The 5700XT is a great card and if anyone has the money to get one... get one (and actually needs a new card). It's great at 1440, outstanding at 1080, and acceptable at 4k. Also, it's a far better value than anything Nvidia has from the 2060 Super on up.
