Mariano is an all time great that forever changed the game but if we’re being honest the fact that he never won a superbowl holds him back from the goat conversation
His early seasons, especially 84, are off the charts, but his numbers kinda fell off after that. Still way above average for the time, but not unbelievable.
Elway's one of those "You had to be there" type of QBs. Those stats don't look impressive because they're not, but at the same time he was dragging what were fairly mediocre teams to the Super Bowl 3 times in 4 years. Fans of the time saw what he was doing. It just didn't convey particularly well to paper.
@@JonSmith-hk1bq Dude, I'm 48, I was there. I know how great he was by the eye test. It was Elway/Marino/Montana in the same way it was Brady/Manning/Rodgers. I'm not doubting his eliteness, but it's a shame that his numbers didn't reflect his talent. It's also really obvious why he despised Dan Reeves 😂😂😂
Yeah there's a reason why Kirk Cousins has put up HOF worthy numbers in this era despite the fact he would've been at best a career back up in Elway/Marino's prime. You can't play defense anymore. Back then if a WR is fast you just punch him in the mouth at the LOS 30 times a game and he goes home with 2 catches for 17 yards.
In 84 the Broncos had the #2 defense and Elway threw a game losing INT against Pittsburg,in 87 he went to the SB because of a game saving turnover, and in 89 the broncos had the leagues' best defense while elway had as many TDs as INTs. Furthermore, in 91, his pick-6 against the bills in the AFCCG proved to be the difference in a 10-7 game, causing reeves to draft Maddox the next year. If anything, Elway was the one who got carried. @@JonSmith-hk1bq

@@alexsolimani Brady played mostly in the 2000s and 2010s and had to face way tougher defenses, Ravens defenses in the 2000s were nasty, had to play the Jets two times every year with Revis Island, No Fly Zone in the playoffs, Legion of Boom, etc. Also rules back then were more lax on the defense, and Brady still threw for 50 TDs in 2007 and led one of the greatest single seasons for a team in NFL history. All superstars are protected to some degree but Mahomes has been pampered more than any other QB in history. Just look at the running play against the Dolphins in the Wild Card where three guys didn't dare to tackle him and just let him run without any resistance
Pretty stupid to compare any of the qbs in this video to Mahomes. You have QBs that actually had to be afraid of defense knocking the actual shit out of their players and themselves, and then Mahomes in which there are literal moments that he runs toward a defender and the defender decides to tackle another player. Can’t compare the qbs considering how different it is now
I have a theory. Late round picks are more likely to win a lot of superbowls than first overall picks. To be a first overall pick the team sucks. If you're a late pick who is a good qb it means your team doesn't suck and you have a skilled gm at putting togethor good teams. It takes skill to pick a talented qb late in the first round. Even your average Joe can draft a good qb with the first round pick.
Out of curiosity, I did a quick count. 27 QBs have been taken with the first pick of the draft. 7 of them won Super Bowls. 6 of those 7 won at least two Super Bowls. Note: There are only 13 QBs in history who have won two Super Bowls. 16 Super Bowls titles between them accounting for 27.5% of all Super Bowl wins. As to the theory that late-round QBs are more likely to win the SB: 7 QBs taken after the 3rd round (or in the case of Kurt Warner, went undrafted) have won a Super Bowl. 3 of them won multiple Super Bowls. 14 Super Bowl titles between them account for 24.1% of Super bowls. Brady accounts for half those wins.
I wouldn’t be mad at it. He definitely has a great argument now if he hasn’t already. Barry’s video actually got me into looking at football highlights, so it’s fun to look historical videos like this 😎 Also, 11:00 made me bust out laughing because this is the Barry we all know and love!
One thing that isn’t mentioned enough in the Mahomes vs. Brady argument is just how much better the AFC is now then it was when Brady was in his prime. The only QBs Brady had to worry about preventing him from getting to a Super Bowl were Manning, Roethlisberger and once Flacco. Mahomes is going up against Allen, Burrow, Jackson, Herbert, Tagovailoa, Stroud, Lawrence and Rodgers now too (if he is healthy). Mahomes path to Super Bowls is seems much harder now than what Brady dealt with.
Brady still had the better qbs in his era and whether or not he faced them in the afc, still had to cross paths with them eventually. None of those you mentioned were better than Peyton.. big ben was better than most of those too. On top of that, his last run he took out Brees, Rodgers the mvp, and mahomes the reigning sb mvp. That's an insane run!
😂😂😂 So good!!! Let's not forget, it wasn't just Dee Ford's toe. That same drive was saved for Brady after a roughing the passer when Chris Jones touched him on the shoulder
I was a huge Brady Stan for years and even defended him from the Aaron Rodgers goat case but Mahomes is different he has everything incredible stats multiple mvps multiple super bowls and even carried a disappointing chiefs team to a Super Bowl win while being underdogs every round he’s quickly becoming undeniable
You'd have to be nuts to think Rodgers is the GOAT. One Super Bowl ring, one appearance...the man hasn't even played in more than one! Brady has seven more SB wins and ten times as many appearances. Mahomes is the ONLY guy who can dethrone Brady.
Upon hearing Barry's audible call to switch to Mahomes I jumped out of my chair in excitement and high-fived my wife's boyfriend. I knew that Mahomes could dethrone the carried Brady legacy and we have all witnessed history today. Thank you Barry!
Tom Brady played in a much more brutal nfl. Its not even close. Now in the protect the QB league? Sure, but there's a big difference dropping back knowing the defense can't touch you and dropping back knowing the defense can kill you. Patrick would have to win 10 sb and throw for 60 td and single digit int to be in the conversation. Plus Brady had to play against manning in the playoffs. A goat vs goat type of thing. Its a high bar.
And who’s Mahomes trying to out duel on the other side? Brady had his bugaboo’s against Peyton in the AFC championship games, Brees and Peyton faced off in the SB, Brady went against Kurt Warner, Farve went against Elway, Rogers went against Big Ben. In the just the playoffs in the AFC it was always Rivers, Ben, Brady, Peyton. NFC you had Farve, Warner, Rogers, Brees, Matt Ryan, Cam Newton, Eli. Guys who made SB’s, won SB’s, won MVP’s. Mahomes is the best QB in an era that’s pass friendly and not loaded with elite QB talent outside of 3-4 guys including him. What we saw in the late 90’s thru the mid 2010’s in terms of QB play was legendary. We just watched Joe Flacco of all people make a playoff run, and that’s really all that needs to be said about the state of the position today. Other than Mahomes, there’s nobody in the league right now that really can hold a candle to the guys I just named and in my eyes that holds significant weight

I’m a biased Chiefs fan but Mahomes is the 🐐. Brady had a 10 year stretch where he didn’t win a Super Bowl including the 07 team that choked away a perfect record. Mahomes still has a long career ahead of him and I think he will only get better the next few years.
@@nickdram The bigger issue is for years until Brady won with the Bucs at 43 everyone said "It was a all Belichick", even though Belichick had won 1 playoff game without Brady. When Mahomes played amazing his first year the exact opposite occurred, "Mahomes got by Reid's terrible time management and won!" Yet Brady outside of Moss for 2 years never had a WR close to the explosiveness that Mahomes had with Hill. Also, his entire career he's been with arguably the best TE ever in Kelce. Point being is, the excuses used to minimize Brady's success don't seem to fall on Mahomes's shoulders that's why people clown and say "It's all Andy Reid". Mind you Reid did make Donavon McNabb an MVP candidate and all 3 of Smith's PB appearances were under Reid. Plus after taking a 2-14 KC team, he flipped the script and brought them too the playoff's in 1 year. Reid is a solid coach and an offensive minded one at that. Shouldn't that hurt Mahomes more than BB for Brady who was solely defensive minded? Regardless, it is fun watching Mahomes and if he keeps this up for another 10 years there won't be much of an argument.

@@TinyCat1015 not knocking I’m pointing out the double standard. If this was Brady’s run this superbowl that’s all the narrative would be is “carried by the defense” but with Mahomes it’s “goat”
Way too early to call him the GOAT. Do people not remember how perfect Tom Brady was? That man went to 10 Super Bowls and won 7 of them… 7. We gotta chill out. Mahomes needs at least 5-6 to even be taken seriously in the conversation. Right now people are just talking. Brady is the greatest undoubtedly and he will be until Mahomes proves he can run & dominate the league with the longevity that Brady did. And let me remind you, Brady did for nearly 20 straight seasons 🤣🤣🤣
To me personally, Mahomes has to do something no one has done. either 3 straight seasons winning the Super bowl or going 20-0. it’s not abt the rings either it’s abt the quality of the title runs
Well he got injured dislocated his knee and won the super bowl. He played his second super bowl win when he was on one leg and he just won again with basically nobody to receive the ball except for Travis Kelce. So his super bowl runs are all legendary bro
Brady’s two playoff wins over Mahomes are huge. Had they gone the other way, it’s likely Brady and Mahomes would be tied now at 5 rings apiece, but since Brady won both affairs, Mahomes still needs 4 rings in order to catch up to him. Edit: JFC people, all I was saying was that Brady’s 2 playoff wins over Mahomes were important for their legacies. I wasn’t taking Brady’s side in the argument or anything. Mahomes is still young so him surpassing Brady is still possible, but it’s crazy that if Mahomes won those two games he’d already be caught up to Brady. That’s literally all I was saying ffs
One playoff win mahommes had a completely new offensive line and threw better dropped passes than the buccaneers threw completed and the other Brady got nervous and threw a stupid pick that was saved by a penalty
@@curtisedmonds9933I’m not sure what he said, but to your point, Brady got out scored twice by his kicker in the superbowl. Personally I do find it difficult to outright call mahomes the goat even though I want to, but I think it’s convenient that Brady has some Super Bowl wins that are more on the weaker side. I would say thus far, of mahomes’ 3 superbowl wins, his roster was worse than both the eagles and the niners, with him being the deciding factor. Looking objectively at Brady’s super bowls, his team was widely considered much better with the exception of the first couple in the early 2000’s, which is wild considering how good those defenses were, but understandable nonetheless
@@davis2k1234 I didn’t say they were. I just said that Brady getting outperformed by kickers is a helping hand to mahomes. Edit: (I wanted to fact check before I said it) mahomes has also gotten a lot better over the course of the past two, with a great game against the eagles and a very solid one against the 49ers. Definitely hurts himself with the performance against Tampa bay but with the way his offensive line got bullied and smashed all game it happens 🤷♂️
At first I was frustrated that the Chiefs are making a dynastic run. But then I realized the could be the only team to dethrone the Patriots dynasty. Without the controversy and cheating. So long live the Chiefs & Mahomes!
@@aceassn716 Joe Montana had a passer rating of 86.9 with 5,824 yards, 34 touchdowns and 18 interceptions in 27 games without Jerry Rice in his career Very good but not elite?
Strongly disagree about Montana. I actually do completely agree that Mahomes is likely to finish ahead of Montana, but your argument here is just a little bit too reliant on projection, and I personally believe that we have to evaluate active players as if they were going to retire tomorrow for the purposes of GOAT discussions. If Mahomes retired tomorrow, he might have the SLIGHT edge on Montana’s regular season career, but Montana is still ahead by a greater margin in post-season play and success. Like I said, I feel very confident that he’ll get there, but I absolutely hate the idea of giving active players credit for stuff they haven’t done yet. You get to be the GOAT when and only when you’ve earned it. Also, RE: the Brady section of this video, given his style of play, I’m not sure Mahomes maintains this level of play for more than another 10 years. It’s possible, but, given his raw athleticism, it just seems like an inevitability that he’s going to take a bad hit on the run at SOME point in the next decade that sets him on a gradual decline. The kind of hit that guys like Brady rarely took, because they were such boring stereotypical pocket passers. TBH, I view Mahomes as a more talented and luckier Rodgers. He’s absolutely got the skills and mentality to unseat Brady and Montana, but there is so much more that can go wrong for a QB like him that, over the course of an entire career, it just seems like a statistical inevitability that he’s going to have a much shorter career with a much more gradual and progressive decline than Brady. I’ll be happy to be proven wrong (because, fuck Brady, amirite), but he doesn’t get credit for what he MIGHT do any more than Rodgers gets credit for what he SHOULD HAVE done.
I'll never forget the time I was having an argument about Rodgers not being the guy to lead your team on a game winning drive. I said I'd take Cousins over him and my buddy said I was crazy. I said, "Well, he has more comebacks at the end of a game than Rodgers does." My buddy couldn't believe it. He thought Rodgers was top 10 all-time in comebacks. @@theplayernkc alright guy, lets talk football. Andy Reid has a greater impact on dogwater QBs than any coach in NFL history, this empire is built by him. If Brady was withheld from GOAT convos because of a defensive HC, then how is Reid ignored for Mahomes, when in reality Mahomes gets to keep the same offense his entire career, one that’s better than 30 other teams, and could literally get replaced by a bum. His responsibilities include pointing out twitchy LBs, scrambling through a wide open gap (the OL makes on purpose, under credited OL) or throwing it to any one of his receivers averaging 3 yards of separation. That’s literally a yard over the NFL average, that gets swept under the rug because they catch like bats Think the offense is hard, watch Henne march 99 yards down the field for a crucial TD in the playoffs last year. Still haven’t recovered after you didn’t put Marino in your top arms video. Unbelievable. As you said one of the best tight window throwers of all time. And that’s due to his velocity. Up there with Elway and Favre when it comes to velocity.

Elways stats are just weird. In PRIME seasons, 88-92, age 28-32 his TD passes were 17, 18, 15, 13, and 10! That was his prime.
He never had the wco till Shanahan

I’ve agreed.
They were the same exact way with Brady too
@@alexsolimani Brady played mostly in the 2000s and 2010s and had to face way tougher defenses, Ravens defenses in the 2000s were nasty, had to play the Jets two times every year with Revis Island, No Fly Zone in the playoffs, Legion of Boom, etc. Also rules back then were more lax on the defense, and Brady still threw for 50 TDs in 2007 and led one of the greatest single seasons for a team in NFL history. All superstars are protected to some degree but Mahomes has been pampered more than any other QB in history. @@noxplay4906 THAT PART, and I say that as an absolute HATER of the Pats and Brady.
Pretty stupid to compare any of the qbs in this video to Mahomes. You have QBs that actually had to be afraid of defense knocking the actual shit out of their players and themselves, and then Mahomes in which there are literal moments that he runs toward a defender and the defender decides to tackle another player. Can’t compare the qbs considering how different it is now
I like this video format comparing him vs other QB's. Please do another one of this like with Tyreek Hill.
THIS is how you have a GOAT debate🔥
I usually like to fall asleep to Barry’s beautiful voice it’s so soothing, it’s like bob Ross paintings but with his voice
As to the theory that late-round QBs are more likely to win the SB:
7 QBs taken after the 3rd round (or in the case of Kurt Warner, went undrafted) have won a Super Bowl. 3 of them won multiple Super Bowls.
14 Super Bowl titles between them account for 24.1% of Super bowls. Brady accounts for half those wins.
I love the off-season content from last year Barry, can’t wait to see what you got planned this time 🔥

We have to take into the fact that old nfl the defense wasn’t playing handicapped they could hit the QB and whoever else had the ball.
Masterful audible
One thing that isn’t mentioned enough in the Mahomes vs. Brady argument is just how much better the AFC is now then it was when Brady was in his prime. The only QBs Brady had to worry about preventing him from getting to a Super Bowl were Manning, Roethlisberger and once Flacco. Mahomes is going up against Allen, Burrow, Jackson, Herbert, Tagovailoa, Stroud, Lawrence and Rodgers now too (if he is healthy). Mahomes path to Super Bowls is seems much harder now than what Brady dealt with.
Those qbs choke!
