Fun fact: The Giants passed on White in the 1984 supplemental draft. So there was a scenario where Reggie White and Lawrence Taylor could have been on the same team.
Was just about to inject a lethal dose of marijuana after you took down the Jimmy G retirement reaction, then this new upload pulled me back from the brink, thanks for saving my life Barry.

Oh I recognize him! He was my wife's yoga instructor, he would come over and practice yoga with her and it seems like when they moved the session to the bedroom they really seemed to be getting into the techniques. I could hear the noises all the way from my kitchen!
I can understand your points about LT cuz by his own admission after Bill Parcells left the Giants in 1990, he was mentally done with football, which explains his Meh last few years. I mean me personally. I think LT is the greatest defensive player of all time. However again, I can understand an argument being made for Reggie White or Aaron Donald
LT by far. Of the 5 mentioned he's the only LB, and in that era LBs were not sack artists. LT disrupted the passing and running games. He cd drop back and defend passes and run sideline to sideline to chase down a smaller running back. he affected the game in more ways than any other player before or since. White, Smith, Deacon and AD were lineman, and they affected the feld within a 10-12 yard trench. LT was literally all over the field, even often down in deep coverage.
Taylor was a edge lb not a true lb like Lewis.Donald also played in a era where defense is filled with penalties and you can't get a game without at least 15 penalties on defense
Barry doesn't grasp how LT invented the modern OLB position and changed defenses forever. He also was a lot more than sacks and could fall back in coverage. Reggie white was more one dimensional edge rusher Thankfully Barry is in the minority and most consider LT the GOAT.
@styeiwehdeisfdo Reggie was not a one dimensional edge rusher. He was great against the run too. If you doubt that, watch the 1994 wild card game where Barry Sanders had minus-one yard on 13 carries because Reggie was lining up in the interior and pushing the Lions guards backwards every snap like they were wearing skates.
The most accurate thing you said in this video was the part about LT fans. I couldn't possibly tell you how many times I've seen them practically go feral when someone suggests that he isn't the GOAT. Its legit like arguing with a child which is ironic since youd have to be at least in your late 40s to early 50s to have watched him play live
@grimplayz7565 It's less that I don't think he is the GOAT defensive player and more that I don't think there's a definitive answer. Imo there are legitimate arguments to be made for LT, Primetime, Reggie, and Ray (I might be forgetting someone at the moment, but thats off the top of my head) to all be the GOAT defender. But LT fans act like it's a conclusive, inarguable fact that he's the best. Does that make sense?
Players from some legendary defenses like Steelers and Vikings of the 1970's are probably hurt statistically by playing alongside other greats, there are only so many plays to be made in any game.
They are hurt by playing alongside one another a bit. But they are also helped to the extent that they played pre-Mel Blount rule. Defensive players today have to deal with offensive linemen who can extend their arms when blocking whereas linemen before 1978 had to have their elbows hunched.
Still believe that J.J should be in the conversation. Had decent longevity and had a super dominant stretch. Was he injured a lot? yes. But he still had great numbers (more sacks than Donald career-wise). Had he not been injured, I believe that in terms of total career he would've been the best D-Lineman of all time. If not, clearly one of the best and most talented.
Glad you mention jj watt I think he had the best 5 year prime of all time dude was unstoppable injuries just killed his career he still hall of famer because of those 5 great years of dominance
i think aaron donald is a top 5 defensive player of all time, but i cant lie. 6'1 284 and he's shredded as hell, definitely is/was on something during his career. if you say "oh he lifted weights his whole life" you dont understand basic human anatomy and have never been to the gym your whole life.
Fair, but I’ll say most NFL players are not natty, especially those on the D Line. I mean, 300LB men running that fast? I’m Sure a lot of players on all positions have an anabolic history as well
*Nah.* *He's actually had to eat a bunch of starchy foods to force himself to gain weight, much like former Browns LT Joe Thomas.* *As a former high school lineman that hasn't played ANY football in 10 years, I was able to increase my bench press from 225 lbs. to 335-345 lbs. in less than 1 years of sporadically going to the gym.* *Aaron has been lifting weights for over 15 years. So it's not impossible to be able to get to that.*
I much prefer to keep it to just tackles. As far as nose tackles go it is pretty much just him and Alan page. He has the better stats but Page basically invented the modern nose tackle and great stats. You get points if you're the first to do something.
Reggie White had respect for God and his commandments. Nothing flawed about that. 1 Corinthians 6:9-11: Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
Very interesting take. Since watching the NFL as a fan, whenever we hear the goat at defense it’s almost always Taylor. But this take and prospective makes a lot of sense for Reggie whites case as the goat
A couple of story's I've heard about Deacon Jones and Reggie White: I read an interview with Deacon where he would take a small steel plate and put in it the palm of his hand and have one of the equipment guys wrap his hand in a cast the night before the game to dry overnight. Then he said just imagine me slapping the ear hole of your helmet a dozen times a game with my loaded hand. Reggie White admitted he didn't invent the hump move. Howie Long was the first to use it Reggie just copied it but said he could never better Howie's.
He changed the game. 2-gap DT/NTs are a relic now. Every team is going straight after the QB w/ 4 men on the line now. Interior pressure wrecks passing games (step up in the pocket? there isn't a pocket) more than edge rushing.
@@fortynights1513 2-gap players (generally NTs) but DTs used to do it too. You basically ask a player to tie up the center and guard and take at least 2 of the 5 blockers up and/or prevent a hole for the RB to run into. The big 330lb DTs back in the day were 2-gap players who stayed glued to the LOS. Today, DTs who don't get pressure/penetration can't survive.
@@fortynights1513 nah its just you play 2-gap, that's fine for the offense, it just means the QB has a pocket to throw in. Give a QB a pocket and no matter who it is they'll complete a pass at minimum a 60% completion rate. You get penetration up the middle it just messes up the QBs vision not to mention sometimes can stop a running play for neg yards. You can still have a 2-gap player or 2 as subs but mainly for just 3rd and less than 3 yards.
Ray Lewis is the best defensive player to play this game. He was a student of the game, worked his ass off and motivated every position around him on the defense which lead to them playing and studying the game harder. He has two super bowls, one sb MVP (retiring after winning the 2nd) and all the numbers a late 90s/early 2000s mlb needs to rightfully call himself the best at their position. Lastly, he’s arguably the greatest on field leader in modern sports.
Aaron Donald wins for giving us one of the best soundbites in football. When Geno Smith said "OH MY GOD!" as Donald came unblocked right up the middle I almost pissed myself laughing so hard.
I cannot wait till they finally get around to figuring sacks for the 1950s. Getting into the prime years of Doug Atkins in Chicago could reveal he had over 200 sacks. He currently has 94.5 sacks and seven seasons left to tally up, three of which are All-Pro caliber. I love seeing what crazy stats the NFL had in its earlier years.
AD is 6'0 280. He is cleaning offensive lineman twice his size with one arm. He is a defensive tackle that is undersized. Its mind boggling how strong he is.
Aaron is the most dominant player I've watched in my lifetime, my hawks would routinely triple team him and have a runningback or tight end chip block and it would do fuck all to stop him.
I agree and add to it, reggie played in the usfl straight out of college, and joined phi when the season started. Had he joined league from the start he'd be the all time sack leader by alot.
As 1 of the 5 Rams fan, Donald is the 2nd Goat. My personal GOAT is Sam Bradford for making the most amount of money doing the least amount of work, and pretty much was the reason rookies can only be signed for so much. What a G
Hard to argue with anything you said. I feel Reggie White was most impactful for the longest time. But man I miss watching White vs Larry Allen or Erik Williams of the cowboys. GOAT ON GOAT ACTION , Ya Barry you know what Im talking bout.
Another good video vut the lack of Scooby seriously hurts your case for the best video ever in my opinion. Anyway keep it Barry and give Scoob a belly rub for me.
At the very least, most people tend to agree, or at least accept as a valid position, that he's the greatest defensive tackle of all time. The ability to establish himself as an all-time great pass rusher from the interior is extremely rare, and he could single-handedly ruin an O-line's entire game plan by creating a numerical advantage to free up space for other rushers. The number of sacks (and pressures and effective rushes) he got in spite of the countermeasures is insane. In terms of his effect on offensive strategy, my hill is that he has more in common with someone like Ray Lewis in that he shut down the middle of the field instead of one of the sides.
I think it’s a given that Donald is the best interior defensive lineman in history at least. What’s crazy to think about is that he’s in the conversation with edge rushers, who get more sacks and pressures on average
Some might point to Reggie not being that dominant of a playoff performer outside of 1996 that could have them pick LT over him (though he did run into those ‘90s cowboys teams at their peak for 4 years in a row) but I still like your argument that Reggie was consistently great for longer than LT and LT has this MJ level of respect that’s almost over the top
I would say that Aaron Donald is the greatest interior defensive lineman of all time. He's absolutely in the conversation for greatest defensive player, and pass rusher, but he's absolutely the greatest interior defensive lineman without a shadow of a doubt
Aaron Donald also played the DT position and the rest of the selections are DE’s or OLB’s. That alone makes Aaron Donald’s achievements that much more impressive
My list has Reggie White as the best DE of all time, LT as the best OLB/Edge, and AD as the best DT. Mainly because like you had mentioned you almost can’t really compare players with such a large difference of eras and what stats were being tracked. For instance TFLs weren’t being tracked until 1994 and still some of the records from 1994 and 2001 are different. As far as I personally am concerned Reggie White, Lawrence Taylor, and Aaron Donald are all tied for the title as the defensive GOAT.
I think Jerry Rice needs brought up in the GOAT conversation more. His stats are just so much far and away better than the next best wide receiver that it’s not even funny. The only argument really is “who was more dominant in his prime, Rice or Moss?” We’re never going to see another receiver be as good as he was for as long as he played.
LT was the best I watched them all LT is the only one to be in the argument for best player. He probably had 8/10 qb pressures a game and was everywhere on the field. He was in on tackles a lot for a outside linebacker.
Remember Lawrence Taylor played linebacker as well though that’s why I think he’s the greatest football player ever Please watch his passing highlights if you’ve never seen it shows how complete of a football player he was. But your breakdown of Reggie white is spot on he probably is the best pure pass rusher of all time. I just think Lawrence Taylor is the greatest football player ever
If we go by peak Im definitely siding with AD 😭 Double digit sacks five years in a row as an IDL, broke the sack record for IDL that hadn't been touched for nearly 30 years and had the Rams not as a playoff team but as straight up Superbowl contenders during his peak. Shit now that I think about it AD's peak was absolutely ridiculous. Idk if we'll see this again in the near future
Barry I need help to convince my parents to get Xbox live and I thought your sheer heroism and class could help me do so. God you are so handsome and cool I wish to be just as powerful as you one day.
I know nostalgia is a hell of a drug, and I know almost everybody has this attachment to not putting anyone in this era on the level of players of previous eras but Aaron is better than LT. he was just more dominant once u contextualize.
Donald was an absolute menace who terrorized the league for a decade. But I have to say that having watched both Donald and Watt at their absolute peaks, I would say Watt was more dominant and impactful by a hair. Donald had the more consistent and durable career so he does get the edge overall in his era. I would still rank him behind the likes of Smith, Taylor, and White. Not by much though. Also, when you talk about all time DT's the likes of Bob Lilly, Allan Page, Mean Joe Greene and Merlin Olsen need to be mentioned (though I know the focus here was pass rushers and not just defensive play overall). Recency bias is a very real thing.
White actually had 2 fewer sacks in 47 less games than Bruce Smith, not 67. I apologize to everybody who is offended.

Different positions Donald was a DT LT was an OLB and Reggie White and Bruce Smith was DE
Aaron Donald also played the DT position and the rest of the selections are DE’s or OLB’s. That alone makes Aaron Donald’s achievements that much more impressive
No. 1. LT. 2. Reggie white 3. Deion sanders. Strictly game changers
We done with the 90s!
@1:58 they really used to just let you tackle QBs by the facemask? Dang!
The entire Vikings D-line from the 70s deserves top 5 consideration. Alan Page has a strong case for the best defensive player ever.
AD forever
Reggie white had more sacks than games played as an eagle. Go birds
LT was the best I watched them all LT is the only one to be in the argument for best player. He probably had 8/10 qb pressures a game and was everywhere on the field. He was in on tackles a lot for a outside linebacker.
Did I just become a Deacon Jones Promoter?
That guy in Cleveland has a shot to be up there with Aaron Donald
Surprised Derrick Thomas wasn't mentioned
Remember Lawrence Taylor played linebacker as well though that’s why I think he’s the greatest football player ever
Please watch his passing highlights if you’ve never seen it shows how complete of a football player he was.
Reggie White has to be the choice tbh this is a good vid
I wish they tracked forced fumbles for LT
I agree with your list
Imo LT and Ray tied for goat defensive player.
There are few players even among the greats who truly were elite for every single (healthy) season of their career and Donald is one of them.
Short & sweet answer, No
Barry I need help to convince my parents to get Xbox live and I thought your sheer heroism and class could help me do so. God you are so handsome and cool I wish to be just as powerful as you one day.
Donald deserves so much more credit for being an interior lineman. People forget that
I’ll accept this answer
I know nostalgia is a hell of a drug, and I know almost everybody has this attachment to not putting anyone in this era on the level of players of previous eras but Aaron is better than LT. he was just more dominant once u contextualize.
Never
@@AlexanderTullis if u feel otherwise thats fine. but Donald was the better player
Is Aaron Donald the Goat?
Short answer: No
Long answer: Also no
he is😂
Would calling him the best interior pass rusher there is be fair?
This old timer (75) is remembers the Deacon and approves these rankings.
Man. I’m getting all CHOKED up about Aaron Donald retiring
i agree.....Reggie White is the most complete
