Luke Kuechly should be a lock for the HOF. One of the greatest defensive players of his decade, which included many of the greatest defensive players. I don’t think it’s outlandish to say he’s underrated.
As a Saints fan, Luke occupies that same place for me that Steve Smith, Sr. did. I loved to hate him. I really miss watching the chess matches he and Brees used to have. I think Luke is easily a HOFer.
I am an NFL and NBA stat monger, it’s like all I check while I do hmw. I say that because Luke Kuechly is absolutely a first ballot hall of famer. Most people forget he led the league in tackles twice, once as a rookie. He won DROY and then immediately won DPOY in his second year. He has the most tackles in a game and truly stuffed the stats. I don’t know why people hate on him, because I’ve literally heard it IN PERSON. One of the best defenders of all time, and he passes the eye test too-saw him play in person.
Also a Saints fan, and Kuechly is absolutely a lock for the Hall and its a travesty if he doesn't get in. To me, he was the best linebacker of his era and the only MLB who could mentally go to war with Brees every Sunday and at times come out on top.

I find it disingenuous how some players, no matter how great they played will never make the Hall of Fame because of the position they played. (NFL)
Or which team they played for. Lavonte David is every bit as great as Bobby Wagner and Luke Kieckley but because they got all the pro bowls and all pros he's not gonna get a look in.

If Evans does put up 10 straight 1,000 yd receiving seasons, i think thatwould be enough to push him to 1st ballot hall of fame. That type of consistency has never been seen. That something Jerry Rice has never done, and Jerry got all the receiving records lol.
Unfortunately, he’s never had any truly dominating seasons. He’s only got one second team, all pro selection. And that matters a lot. He is the definition of consistency, but never quite great. Definitely a Hall of Famer second or third.

Special Teams are an integral aspect of football, and are extremely underrated. Just look at the 2010 Chargers who failed to make the playoffs despite having the #1 ranked offense and defense. And look at all time leading scorers - all kickers.
Yeah, the "every down" argument is dumb, especially for kickers, punters, and long snappers, who quite literally have only one role on their team (I guess punters double as field goal holders most of the time, but that's not what they get paid to do). If you are among the best ever to play your position, no matter what sport you play, you should be in the Hall of Fame without question. Where it gets tricky is with the returners, who almost always have another job title-but the value they contribute is integral to their teams' success. I think Tasker, Hester, and Patterson, at minimum, deserve to be in the Hall of Fame because of how dominant they were in that field position battle.
I can understand the returner point a bit, but going after kickers and punters is a bit silly. Like how are you going to think someone like Justin Tucker doesn’t belong in the hall of fame when he’s been such a dominant kicker throughout his career.
The field position game with returners and punters as well is an integral part of winning games and because of the impact someone like Hester can bring I do think some returners should make it. Hester obviously was never a good receiver, but teams were legitimately afraid to put the ball in his hands and would often just kick it out of bounds even when it would cost them field position rather than risk him having the chance to return it.
The Hester effect was very real and for that I do think he should be in the hall and will be soon considering he was a finalist recently.

They may not have provided as much value as some, but given their circumstances they probably gave as much as they could.
@@fortynights1513 Hester didn't give as much as he could. He could have been a decent starting-caliber wide receiver and that on top of his punt returning would have put him on the HOF. But he was terrible on offense.
I think elite long term impactful special teamers should get in. Tasker was a 7 time All-Pro who basically forced the league to add the Special Team position to the Pro Bowl. If you want to make them wait until their last year of eligibility for not being an every down player, fine, but they dominated the game at their position and should get in. Or don’t have the kicking game in football any more. Vinitieri, Tucker…they’re gonna get in.

I kind of agree with your Devin Hester take, but at the same time most games are won because of field position and no one did their team more favors in that regard than Hester. He made the Bears' offense job so easy it didn't matter than they were lackluster until they got to the superbowl.
That field positioning point you made is an incredibly good point for his HOF case.
Being a returner is one of the harder positions in football to be great at it isn't a joke just like nobody respect kickers and punters even though most people couldn't kick a ball 10 yards let alone 50 plus with the game on the line Hester literally won games for bears he was one of the main reasons the bears even went to the superbowl with Eben they lost it was his fault he just became the 1st person to ever return a kickoff in the superbowl on the opening kickoff Hester was DeShawn Jackson without the receiving skills
@Nicknursenut So you're point is people like Tucker, Gould, and other great kickers don't deserve to be in the Hof because they aren't on offense or defense. When in reality they are sometimes more clutch then both offenses and defenses combined.
Field position automatically deserves to keep returners in the convos. But by your point that means that INTs don't meant much anymore if field postion doesn't matter.
I think personally any player that is so dominant in their respective position that the NFL has to nerf them, they deserve to be inthe HoF. Not first ballot or even second. But somewhere down the line they should be given it.

But isn't the Hall of Fame there so you can point at it and go "this is one of the best [insert skill] ever"? The best punt returner ever should absolutely be in there. Same goes for Cordarrelle Patterson.

Frank Gore’s lack of burst due to multiple knee injuries in college is a huge reason why not seen as a Hall of Famer by many.
He's a classic example of average to slightly above average production over a lengthy career.... Respectable, yes, but not really that talented or special.
I just saw that Frank Gore (2006) had a similar season comparable to Curtis Martin's (2004, HOFer)
Anyone who says Gore didn’t have burst didn’t watch any early Gore games. He was the best offensive player on a SB team. He was the only bright spot on some absolutely awful teams. And I get why people didn’t watch those awful 49er games but he was a beast on teams with horrible qb and offensive line play. Every team knew Gore was going to get the ball so they would stack the box and he would still run into the pile and somehow come out the other side still on his feet.
Would be great if Barry did a video on Russell Wilson like the one he did on Cam Newton. There must have been signs in the Seattle days that hinted at what we're now seeing in Denver and Pete Carroll obviously saw it too.
You could say that about any QB though, if they get hit before they throw they obviously aren’t going to be making any plays. ie Mahomes Super Bowl 55

In 2020, Russell Wilson was the best qb in the league for about the first 8 weeks, and then he took a huge hit in a game against Arizona and suddenly started throwing picks a bunch. I swear, he hasn’t been the same since that
@@oldtownscouts3712 The rot had definitely started before 2021 because in 2021, the Seahawks had a really hard time scoring in the second half of games. They repeatedly struggled to move the ball and lived off an occasional deep ball to Lockett or Metcalf. In the games with Russell Wilson they scored on 33 of their 72 drives in the first half (45.8%) but only 22 of their 81 drives in the second half (27.16%).

Von Miller. Super Bowl 50 mvp, 8-time pro bowler, 3 time all pro, tied for most sacks in superbowls. Not sure if he will be a first ballot but I think he definitely deserves to be in the HOF.

To add on to the Super Bowl sacks stat, he’s only one of two players to have recorded a multiple-sack performance in multiple Super Bowl Games with Justin Tuck being the other one. Oh and he may have tied Charles Haley’s record for sacks but he played in 3 fewer Super Bowls.

The problem with with Naismith Hall of Fame for just "letting anyone in" is that you didn't need to great in the NBA you just need to be great at whatever level of basketball you were in.

the baseball hof in america limits players to at least 10 years of MLB experience. The Japanese hof, absolutely, but not the one in america, yet. I'll wait til '26 when he will get eligible
The baseball HOF values accumulation and longevity more than every other sport. A short career of dominance won't get Ohtani in, he has to make this last at least another 5 years of all star like play. He's 29 and he only has about 35 WAR which is a slower pace than most other HOF players. 50 or 55 WAR is usually the baseline to even be considered.

Devin Hester deserves to be in the Hall based on his special teams accomplishments alone, but he was an every down guy for all but two seasons of his career, with his best season as a receiver being 2009.
The Ted Ginn comparison is 100% fair when counting stats are taken into account, but Devin Hester has pro bowls, all-pros, all-decade teams and NFL records to his name. Ted Ginn doesn’t.

Completely agree as a DAL fan. In fact Aikman was first ballot.
Aikman being in the Hall is a crime against football. If he had played his career with the Cardinals there's zero chance he would have even been under consideration. It's just the NFL's goofy pro-Cowboys bias that got him in.
Aikman had 3 and was part of a dynasty. Manning was never part of a dynasty. So the comparison is not the best.

Someone who doesn’t get talked about enough in this conversation is Terrell Suggs, dpoy, 8th all time in sacks, 2 super bowls, 7 pro bowls, and an all pro. But I don’t think he is a recognizable name enough to get in even though he definitely has the accolades
Suggs has two all pros if you count second team selections (08 in that case).
What do you think about Jamaal Charles? 3x All-Pro, 4-time pro bowler, nfl record for yards per carry (5.4) 5x 1,000 yard seasons and a rushing title.
What make Frank Gore special and worthy of the HOF is that he had longevity and consistency at a position that is noun for its short shelf life he was the best at being available and good at his position
The Steve Tasker takes weird to me, Steve doesn’t belong in but by saying kickers and returners don’t belong in the hall because they specialized in special teams and not Offense or Defense isn’t a good take. Justin Tucker belongs especially if he plays the way he always has for like 2 more years, and Devin Hester is the greatest returner ever, I believe their ability swung the outcome of games as much as star WRs and and HBs. Justin wins games constantly. I think Special Teams is almost just as important as the other two sides of the ball. (I’m a Chargers fan who cries when he hears the word “2010”)
Antonio Brown should get in to the hall of fame. Guys like Jim Brown and Karl Malone are in as great players who are complete scumbags. Michael Irvin stabbed a dude and had worse stats and is in th Hall. Steve Smith is a certifiable lunatic who beat up his own teammate and will probably get in eventually. Lawrence Taylor is terrible off the field as well and is in the super elite inner circle of Canton. AB has not done anything near as bad as those dudes so he should be a hall of famer I believe.

If you want to make an argument about his production, go ahead, but if you think arguing a player belongs for a few memorable highlights is silly, then arguing that someone doesn’t belong because of one play is just as silly.

I don’t think the wrong way run should be a huge reason why you aren’t voting for Marshall.
Don’t get me wrong, if you want to argue that Marshall was consistently good but rarely elite, or didn’t peak as high as some, then I’d say that is a better argument against him being in Canton.
There’s also at least one precedent for the inverse here:
The only thing anyone seems to remember from Jackie Smith’s career was his dropped pass in Super Bowl 13, and he made it to Canton (it took longer than it would’ve without it, but he still got in).
Personally I think AJ Green should be in the Hall, but not 1st Ballot. He was arguably the 4th or 5th best receiver in the league at his peak before injuries caught up to him after 2017, and while pro bowls don’t mean as much these days, 7 pro bowls and 2 2nd team all pros is a very decorated career, on par with or guys in the hall, and better than people most people want in the hall, someone like Hines Ward. Yes yes ward has 1500 more yards and 15 more tds, he played 3 more seasons with much better Qb play, as famous women respected Big Ben and Kordale Stewart are leagues better than Andy Dalton, Aj McCarron and Kyler Murray. Imo if every really good wide receiver of the 2000’s is a hall of Famer, than Aj absolutely deserves 2nd or 3rd ballot consideration. (Ps I’m a jets fan so I don’t know why I’m ranting about Aj green lol)

Sterling's career was on a Jerry Rice-like trajectory before his neck injury. If he hadn't gotten hurt the Packers probably three-peat from 1995-1997.
My point for special teamers being hall of famers is all time great relievers getting in. The role is super specialized duh, but they're some of the greatest of all time at their position

Philip Rivers is the most unlucky qb of the 21st century. He repeatedly had some of the worst to mid offensive lines, and one of the most consistently worst special teams, WHICH IS WHY SPECIAL TEAMS MATTER
Rasheed Wallace. I think he was an incredibly talented player that unfortunately played in a golden period of power forwards alongside Duncan, Dirk, KG and Webber. He was one of the best stretch 4s of that era and one of the best post players and defenders. Was the main guy on the trailblazers team that made it to the WCF twice as well as helped elevate the 04 Pistons to an all-time great team. Not to mention holds a record that will never be broken now of the most techs in a season.

Tucker for sure, the Ravens for years have basically been able to approach their decisions and game management with the confidence that Tucker will make 50-60 yard long field goals.

I saw an interview with Marshawn Lynch and he said he would step back and let the other running backs get the ball after he hit 100yds in a game if they weren't losing, if that's true I think he definitely deserves to be in the HOF. It would be a shame if he doesn't get in because his stats were less for being a team player

Being a Reds fan, Votto is a tough one to say if he's a HOFer, mostly due to all the time he's missed throughout his career, whether it was from mental or physical ailments that kept him off the field. No doubt about it, his OBP is outstanding, mainly from all the walks he got because of his outstanding eye for the strike zone. Though, his career batting average is now below .300, sitting at .294 and getting worse by the year (his last .300+ BA was in 2017 and his last respectable year was in 2021 with a .266 BA with 36 HR and 99 RBI.) And while his BB are very good, he actually strikes out more than he walks. He's also a hot head who gets ejected from games more than the average player. Some voters aren't too keen on voting for hot heads if they are borderline HOF, like Votto is. There is definitely arguments for and against Votto's inclusion in the HOF. His pluses include his career OBP, his career BA (though, dropped below .300 in the last 2 years,) his 2010 MVP year (though, an argument could be made that Pujols was just as deserving that year,) and a decent (not great) defensive 1B (only one gold glove.) His negatives include missing a lot of time due to injury, his skills and seasonal stats have deteriorated over the last few years due to age and injury, and his anger issues with the umps causing ejections that some voters do not like (to be fair, though, that is from his passion for the game.) In interviews with the media and talking to fans, he's a likeable and funny guy. Also, the Reds only made the playoffs a few times during Votto's career and never got past the first round (though, not Votto's fault.)
His guaranteed 10-year $225M contract with the Reds ended this past season. Though, there is still a one-year team option to bring him back in 2024 at $20M. So, if the Reds don't bring him back, I don't know if Votto will retire or try to sign with another team. If he doesn't come back to the Reds, it's a shame that his last game with the Reds will be a 1st inning ejection from arguing balls and strikes from the dugout. Votto is now 40 years old also and the Reds have a lot of young guys on the team now who will only get better with more playing time. Bringing back Votto will take away playing time from the younger guys who play 1B and/or DH.
Thoughts on Rajon Rondo as a hall of famer? Wasnt exactly a great scorer, but was a great point guard when it came to defense and play making. Was on a whole nother lever in the playoffs as well. I think the low amount of ppg would hinder him, but his play in the playoffs and being a great defensive point guard and great passer.

Eli Manning is a hall of famer. Other QBs you say don't have Super Bowl rings and Manning has 2 and played great in both games. Plus he had that long consecutive game streak.

Seems criminal to talk about Marty Schottenheimer's HOF case while Mike Holmgren is still not in. 14 winning seasons to 3 losing seasons. Sustained success in two different franchises. Super Bowl as a HC. Super Bowl as an OC. Coached two of his QBs to 5 total MVPs. Holmgren has a way better resume than Bill Cowher, who is in the HOF.

I don't agree with Barry saying that if Terrell Davis is a Hall of Famer, that Derrick Henry is. TD won 2 superbowls and is the greatest postseason running back ever.
You can't say that Hester doesn't get in because his touchdowns are only worth six points like all others, but then discount all kickers when they score more points than anyone.

Dude was an amazing athlete, but outside of 2010 he was a below average qb for pretty much his entire career. Probably the most overrated qb of all time.
Just to show some love for Steve Tasker, apparently Marv Levy kept him on special teams because he was so valuable and Levy didn't want him to get hurt playing offense.
In my opinion if you are saying yes to Devin Hester, then Steve Tasker should also be a yes.
But if you said no to both I’d understand it.

Hester's job was returning kicks. Don't disrespect him like that. He'll get in. What he did was historical and he legit changed the game. Nearly changed the rules too.

As a Bears fan thank you for the Ted Ginn Jr comparison to show what I have been saying for years- Hester is not a HOFer! All the years of frustration that he couldn’t run routes and had hands of stone when counted on as a WR. Meanwhile respecter of women Tyreek Hill is proving that you can go from superstar KR to legit WR1 and might finally break the 2k mark this year and possibly do it in 16 games.

I think for special teamers to be in the HOF no one is an "every snap player" because the teams are split anyways. Plus a Hall of Game should be "Who is the best at their position" because everyone is tasked with their job. If the team doesn't win a Superbowl because of bad QB play that suddenly places the blame on the punter who was consistently doing his job perfectly every time? If you're building a team, you want the best kicker because they get you points, you want the best return guy because they set you up with yards or score you points. It's all about who helps you to win, and if they do their part, even if the team doesn't do it, they deserve the recognition they get. The Hall of Fame is each individual player and position focused it doesn't need to add team success otherwise what's the point because and NFL team is 50+ players plus coaching staff
I agree that special teams TDs aren’t worth any more than regular ones. But Hester is no doubt a HOF player. If touchdowns were really all that mattered no offense lineman or defensive players would ever sniff the hall of fame. No one in NFL history was a better returner than him.
I believe devin hester deserves the spot because he was so good at his position that there was nobody before or since that can replicate his performances at kick returner.

The reason Prime Time and Cheetah are/will be HOFers is that they were/are much more than just return specialists. If Hester would’ve been the lock-down CB he was drafted to be or the WR1 they tried to make him then yes, but he failed miserably at both.

Bob sanders played in exactly 48 games in regular season over 8 years so a total of 3 full seasons in 8. But in those 3 seasons/majority of 3 he managed to be a 2 time all pro, 2 time Pro Bowler, NFL Defensive player of the year, and a Super Bowl champion.
I’m a colts fan and no one could ever convince me that manning deserved the super bowl mvp trophy, over Sanders, especially having 1 good half and average games the rest of the 2006 playoffs. That Super Bowl run and win was the break out moment for Sanders and he won the Defensive Player of the Year, deservedly and I believe unanimously, the very next regular season.
His resume in only 48 games is Hof esque, but I agree that consistency and longevity should be valued greatly when being inducted into the hall of fame and Bob Sanders should fall short. No doubt I’d take the careers of Ed Reed, Troy Polumala, and Brian Dawkins as the Colts safeties from that era, over Sanders, but you’re givng me one game to pick the best players to form an all time greatest team, or die, I’m riding with Bob Sanders at strong safety. When he played he was one of, if not, the greatest. He literally changed that defense 180 degrees and each game completely.
I disagree with the idea that "less valuable" positions shouldn't be represented in the Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame should consist of the best and most iconic players for every position.

Cam Newton? Has the MVP and SB appearance and some niche records. More passing yards than Terry Bradshaw. But his decline since 2017 has been tragic
He did have a very good year in 2018 under Turner when they started 6-2 and had a better year that stretch than he did his mvp year
Bradshaw was much more favorable since the 70s wasn't a strong decade for QBs. Newton only had three Pro Bowls
