    Very interesting difference. The biggest change was certainly the lag in the audio vs video once you switched to the Webcam utility. Thanks so much for sharing, I was looking at the M50 as it seemed a cleaner set-up than others (using the webcam utility) but this is a significant eye opener.

      I don't have anything specific to live streaming. I've used mine primarily for Teams calls/live events and various other meeting software (Zoom, Google, etc). The biggest quality gain I got was when I setup proper lighting. I got two Elgato Air Lights and then I use the Canon EOS Utility software with a white balance card to correct the color. After doing that, the quality was significantly better.

    Good comparison. I have a question though, how did you eliminate the eye tracking image from the clean hdmi output?

    • @SteveWinward
      @SteveWinward  3 года назад

      Because the M50 Mark II has clean HDMI it removes all of the eye tracking and focus information from the video image. The previous model, the original M50 did not have this feature and you needed to use software like Sparkocam to remove the eye tracking.

I have found that I have to keep the camera on manual focus to avoid the white box (for autofocus) being displayed on zoom et al meetings. Have you found a way around this, or are you also leaving it on manual focus?

      Hey Jenna. A couple of things you should try.
      First without the camera connected to your laptop, change the video settings to Clean HDMI out. You can set this to 1080p 60 fps or 4K 30fps. Under the menu its on page 9 under HDMI info disp.
      Once you do this, the video feed from Elgato should have none of the information settings from the camera. Also when I use my setup I have both the micro HDMI connected to the elgato as well as the USB.

    Thanks for this video. I'm thinking of upgrading to the M50 Mk II from my 100D (no clean HDMI out so I have to use Webcam Utility) but I just wondered if you could confirm before I buy:
    1) Does the M50 Mk II provide clean HDMI out with the autofocus still on? I've seen conflicting things online about this and some say it has to be in manual focus to get the focus box to disappear.
    2) Can you use the M50 for an unlimited time without it shutting off? I've seen some people saying you can only use it for 30 mins before it shuts off and the only work around is to have it plugged in via USB with EOS Utility running in the background.
    Thanks in advance

    • @SteveWinward
      @SteveWinward  Год назад

      Yes to both. The M50 Mark II allows you to output clean HDMI. If you install the EOS utility on your computer you can use the usb connection to allow the camera to run as long as you need to. I have a dummy battery to keep the camera powered on, but I have had meetings for several hours with my setup and never had an issue.

    Hi, may I ask if you managed to get pass the 30min limit using the camlink? Would I require to open up Eos utility 3 In order to "force" the camera to not sleep after 30mins of recording?

    • @SteveWinward
      @SteveWinward  3 года назад +3

      Yes. I have the usb cable connected from the camera to my laptop. Whenever I turn my camera on the EOS utility app automatically launches on my PC. My understanding is that this is what tells the camera to bypass the 30 min limit.
      In addition to the usb cable I also have a hdmi cable connected to the capture card. I also have a dummy battery plugged into the camera.
      I’ve used this setup for work over the last few months and it’s worked out great!

    Usb 2.0 transfers only 480 mbps so it can only do 576p and 30fps with the webcam utility. The camlink uses the hdmi which is much faster so you get 1080p and 60 fps. I had to learn this the hard way. My question is, are you using sparkocam to remove the display? Or are you getting clean hdmi with the capture card? I have the m50 and If I want clean hdmi with the camlink, I have to use sparkocam to get clean hdmi

    • @SteveWinward
      @SteveWinward  3 года назад +1

      No, so this was with the Canon EOS M50 Mark II which introduced the ability to output clean HDMI. So I can get clean output without using sparkocam and record directly with OBS. This was actually one of my first every RUclips videos and I have learned a lot since then. I used zero lighting in this video and it makes a huge difference if you see any of my more recent tech videos.

    Hey Steve. Firstly. Thank you so much for the video.
    Bought the Canon EOS M50 Mark II (along with a Camlink) off this video and ran into trouble.
    As soon as I plug in the micro HDMI to HDMI cable into the Camlink my Canon goes back and getting no output...
    Off Camlink's website:
    • Disable Eco Mode in settings.
    • Disable Auto Power Off in settings.
    • Disable Auto-Focus
    I've done all three. Only possible option is I read in a comment that when you had the Camlink in a docking station you had similar problems...
    So perhaps I need to go directly into my Mac. Wondering if you had any ideas.
    One question I have - When you connect the camera to the Camlink (without being connected to your mac) does the camera screen turn off straight away?
    Mine currently does. Which makes me think it's not a docking problem but a camlink to canon problem.
    Any help massively appreciated.

    • @SteveWinward

      You don’t need to update the EOS Utility software. You need to get a mini HDMI to HDMI cable and connect that from your camera to the capture card. Then you can use the capture cards video as input into your laptop. Note that if you use the M50 and not the M50 Mark II you do not get clean HDMI out which means you need to use something to remove the display information from the output. SparkoCam is software that can do that for you.
