This is just excellent! I have been shooting for years and pretty much know all of this, fortunately. It is one of the best videos I have seen for people new to photographers and for those of us that are more experienced and need to be reminded from time to time.
Gonna start with lessons in februari.... the m50 mk2 will be my second camera, i bought one 18y ago, so a looooot changed. Your videos are fantastic and very informative❤ Thank you for that
This is honestly one of the best videos to improve your photography. It's taken my photography to another level and I find myself coming back to it all the time
Thank you so much for using the kit lens. That just made my day so much.. so many people tell me to stick with the basics to get better but i see videos using insanely better lenses.
I’ve got my Mark II a month ago and I was so excited to start making photos. After watching and reading lots of videos about the settings I was taking photos by randomly changing the setting manual mode, which gave me a bit of idea how the settings like ISO, aperture, etc are working… but it was so hard to understand what I have tot do in certain situations. So, today, I’ll start practicing by following your instructions, which has helped me by inspiring me 🙏
great tip would be to follow a rule of thumb, but heres something that will help you out. Shutter speed( shows as 1/160 for ex) the higher the more motion you can capture like a flying bird but also the darker the picture gets. Appeture F( Ex f8) controls how wide the lens is open and changes the depth of feild. The higher the more things in focous like the subject and backgorund for like landscape pictrues. the lower the more depth of feild for portraits and add focous to the subject. and last but not least ISO, very important, increases the artaficial light on a picture on the canon eos m50 anything below 800 should be good the higher the iso the more grainy youd get, you can probably get away with nubers a bit higher but caerful abt the grain, now also search how to take hdr pictures because thats important and try using Av mode which lets your camera do most of the work but you control the appeture and iso helpful for fast shots and ya hope that helps
@@notpoop488 Hi, I have a question. I just bought Hoya CIR-PL Slim filter (polarizer). I see that image is automatically darker. I believe to correct it I just should manuver with ISO right? Whats interesting is when I have ISO on AUTO without polarizer vs with polarizer, there is a significant difference in ISO and also pictures with polarizer are darker - shouldnt auto ISO adjust it to the same view (brightness) as it would be without polarizer?
I've been thinking about buying an M50 because my old camera isn't holding up anymore, but this video taught me about much more than just the camera! The way you explained everying was really clear and straight to the point with great examples! Thanks for the video man🤗
This video made me feel like I took a photography course.. such great information! Thanks for your effort 🙏🏼 I only have one question, did you record this video with Canon M50 as well? I like how the background looks blurry and vivid at the same time ☺️
Thanks, that’s a wonderful compliment, I really appreciate it. This was shot on the Canon M6 Mark II, which is the next model up from the M50. The blurry background is achieved by the lenses being used, which also works on the M50, it’s the sigma 16mm f1.4.
I have been stagnant on my creativity when shooting…especially when Covid hit… so I took a break… those creative juices came back after rewatching your videos. Thanks Mark.
thank u so much, i've been searching for someone who actually uses the kit lens as the example, cuz to be true, most of us, bought this camera cuz we don't have the money or the knowledge to buy other things...thank u so much.
This is an amazing video for someone entering the photography world with one of these starter cameras! I learned so much from all of the information you filled this short 17-minute video with.
Very useful settings for the Canon M50 Mark II (in my case), thank you for sharing them, I really like the calm in your explanations, step by step with energy and patience. Quality video (including sound, lighting and image quality). Thank you 📷
Great advice for any camera user, whether they have a M50 or not, I love my M6 Mk1. It’s not the camera it’s your appreciation of the subject you frame, don’t rush but look at what you see and try and capture that moment.😀
I have no plans to do any content, be a photographer or be a professional artist in any way. But this definitely helps a lot. I just want to take good pictures of my family. Thank you.
This was extremely helpful! I bought my m50 back in 2020 for making content for my business. Lately I have been wanting to improve my photography and videography skills. This got straight to the point and gave great exercises to practice the skill with this camera right out of the box. Thanks for the video 💪
New to photography. I travel a lot for leisure to some less traveled hard to get to places, and wanted to take some photos of moments in time to share with family and friends. This video was very helpful. Thank you.
This was great! I've been a photographer for 20 years now but just started using a mirrorless. These were great tips and honestly great reminders that you just kinda forget about over the years! Thanks!
I've really gotten into photography as of late, and have done some photography with my phone that I had gotten just because of it's camera. Very limited feeling with that though... I'm surprised your channel doesnt have anymore subcribers because it most definitely deserves them. You sir just helped me make my mind up on the camera I want to start off with ! Great content!
Thanks for the great quick intro to photography. I know enough photography to know I don't know that much about photography. I'm still working on developing my vision even after all these years. And with the standard camera now able to shoot both video and stills with so many options, the fundamentals become more important than ever. As for the rule of thirds, after many years of seeing it used, I think it is so effective because it is a method that 'makes room' for the viewer into the image. It has a psychological effect of saying 'you have a place in this experience; there is room for more here, I'm not trying to say it all for you'. Just a thought.
excellent video, now I shoot in RAW (CRAW actually) and tweak the photos in Lightroom, the difference is night and day! I'm still working on composition though.
This is awesome! I am just scrolling through the internet to look for an affordable camera and found Canon m50 mark II interesting, So I go to youtube and hoping for a video run through about the camera. This is exactly what I hoped for. Huge help!
I got my Canon m50 today and took some photos, and none of them looked good, and I got frustrated. But I came across your video, and it really helped me to understand the basics things so I will try take some photos tomorrow. 😅😅
Just got my Canon M50 Mark 2, what you said about sometimes putting it in landscape can put in too much into the frame making whatever photo you’re trying to take seem too bloated with objects / subjects. I felt exactly that when trying to photo a River Dam. Too much in the background. Couldn’t explain how I felt until you said it,
This was great. I’ve had my camera for a year and been too scared to use it. Your style of presentation is so encouraging and I love the lesson you have set. I’m off outside to photograph stuff.
So concise and thorough! Used your tips while taking pictures are a birthday party this weekend and most turned out great! Had some issues with out-of-focus subjects in some shots. Any tips for troubleshooting that?
hmmm... try using single point autofocus. That would be my first suggestion.

Great video Mark! I think a great follow up to this video would be the mechanics of actually taking a picture using the information you provided...pick an easy subject and walk through the steps, including all of the information seen on in/on the display and evaluating the result (maybe with some basic self troubleshooting...picture was blurry, color was off, light was bad, etc.etc) ...kind of the practical application of this video. For me, I find most videos focus on settings (which are good) and photography concepts (aperture, shutter speed, iso, etc, etc)-which are also good-but fall short of actually taking a picture and evaluating the steps, adjustments etc. Maybe the beginning of a cool progression series?

Going to India for a wedding in the fall and will sneak in a morning Tiger Safari. Dilemma - take my M50Mkii and pick up the M55-200 used, or my old (weather-sealed) 70D? I have the 70-200 BIG zoom lens for the 70D, but not crazy to lug it 1/2 way around the world for 4 hours of use. I'm thinking the M55-200 should be enough...I'm not a pro, and would prefer to travel light. Thanks for all your M50 videos - they have made my use of the camera so much more informed and better!
I don’t even have a camera (but i want the M50) and i find this video very interesting and feel like i learned A LOT!!! I will try to replicate the SEF-B with my cellphone, and practice until i have a real camera 🫶🏽 thanks for sharing your knoweldge. Greetings from Chile 🇨🇱
I’ve watched many m50 reviews since getting gifted one in 2019-2020 and so far this has been the only one that has peaked my interest and fired my love for photos again. I’ve shot with a Nikon d5300, Sony a7r 2 and 3 and I was thinking of getting a fuji but honestly it’s the skills that make the photo. Knowledge of the basics, lighting, composition, SEF-B like you said that I really need to master. I do beauty photography so I haven’t really gotten the perfect lens for my m50 cuz frankly I’m not sure w/c to get. I just have my kit lens. Do you have any recommendations? I am probably gonna get that 32mm and also would need a longer one for travel. If there’s one major thing I’ve learnt in my short time of shooting is that, composition / SEF-B like you said is everything. Makes it less time consuming for post processing later.
What a great comment. Thanks! For beauty, faces, skin, human form, I would invest in lighting before buying a lens. COB light and 90cm softbox, if you are not moving around, and an off camera flash setup if you are. Photography is painting with light, quality, and control, of the light is more important than the lens.
10:00 another tip, if you dont like your photos try and go closer. You can find so many interesting compositions just by getting in close. Make what your shooting more abstract.
while in manual mode - and looking through the viewfinder (versus the touch screen) - is it possible to adjust ISO, f-stop and/or shutter speed on the m50?
What do you use to protect the camera itself? I purchased the lens cover and screen protector but I feel like I need something to protect the rest of the camera from scratches.
Thank you for the 411. Love it! Such an easy follow, you keep it interesting. Such a great instructor. I just started photography (and film) for a hobby.
Thanks. Great question, that really depends on both the lights that are around, and what look for are going for. Play with them when you are actually on the street, and find the look (Color’s) that look best to you. If you shoot jpg and raw (setting in the camera), you can change the white balance in editing, with no colour loss or sacrifice, with the raw files.
This video was very helpful I just purchased a M50 very nice camera but I have a question what is Exp SIM? Do you have any videos on it or can you do one? Thank you Keep up the good work.
Yes, it just means that what you see in the LCD is what the photo should look like, for the most part. It is simulating the exposure of the finished photo.
Hello, this was a helpful video - thank you. I used your links for the lens hood and filter (and screen protector), but the issue is when zoomed all the way out (using kit lens) I can see part of the lens hood so I’m forced to either remove it or zoom in. Am I doing something wrong, or is that normal? Thanks for the help!
Hmmm… I can’t be sure, but, if it’s the flower pedal shaped kind, you have to make sure the bigger pedals are top and bottom (from memory). I think it will actually allow you to put it on the wrong way, then the hood would be in the shot.
Hi! Im interested in buying an M50MkII. Can u comment about its “Start-up Time”?...bcos Im interested to use it for street photography. What do you think of its EVF and brightness of the rear screen?
@@macallanvintage I don’t have the MKII but the MKI is very fast and I have no complaints. The screen is great brightness wise, and I often flick it out so it’s at the right angle for the shot. This also avoids any glare if it’s bright outside

Thank you so much!
So concise and thorough! Used your tips while taking pictures are a birthday party this weekend and most turned out great! Had some issues with out-of-focus subjects in some shots. Any tips for troubleshooting that?
hmmm... try using single point autofocus. In the standard mode, the camera is trying to be a mind reader and guess what you want in focus, and it's amazing how good it actually is at that, but single point allows you to put the autofocus point on the subject and let the camera know exactly what you want in focus. That would be my first suggestion.
This was exactly what I needed...omw to Japan this year can't wait for street and food photography
Thanks. Enjoy Japan!
Thanks!

Thanks.
10:00 another tip, if you dont like your photos try and go closer. You can find so many interesting compositions just by getting in close. Make what your shooting more abstract.
Good tip.
Great demonstration on how to use the M50 so useful and helpful as a novice user. Appreciate it man
Thanks.
Thanks Mark. I'm waiting for my m50 to arrive and I'll be buying the accessories too!
Welcome to the club! Enjoy the journey!
while in manual mode - and looking through the viewfinder (versus the touch screen) - is it possible to adjust ISO, f-stop and/or shutter speed on the m50?
What do you use to protect the camera itself? I purchased the lens cover and screen protector but I feel like I need something to protect the rest of the camera from scratches.
I often use a camera cage, but just being carful is good. Check out the most recent video on the channel, goes over some care tips.
Thank you for the 411. Love it! Such an easy follow, you keep it interesting. Such a great instructor. I just started photography (and film) for a hobby.
So nice to hear, enjoy the journey.
Really really great video. You are a great teacher. Thank you for this task and hints!
Great video. For white balance for night street photography, and custom K, what should it be set at?
Thanks. Great question, that really depends on both the lights that are around, and what look for are going for. Play with them when you are actually on the street, and find the look (Color’s) that look best to you. If you shoot jpg and raw (setting in the camera), you can change the white balance in editing, with no colour loss or sacrifice, with the raw files.
absolutely brilliant lesson I took so much from this thank you 😊
Wonderful to hear.
Very clear explanation.. will definitely use these tips for my next trip!
Thanks a lot!
No worries! Good luck and enjoy the journey!
Excellent video! very well explained and the feel that I’m in a class
Great to hear..
This video was very helpful I just purchased a M50 very nice camera but I have a question what is Exp SIM? Do you have any videos on it or can you do one? Thank you Keep up the good work.
Yes, it just means that what you see in the LCD is what the photo should look like, for the most part. It is simulating the exposure of the finished photo.
thanks so much!!! I have a question: what do u use for this video?
i want more videos like this . i can just set my settings and learn to do whatever that day you teach me
Yes, I' working on one now.
@@markwiemels That did the trick! Thanks so much for the quick response!
Just bought the M50 and heading out for my first photo shoot tonight, thank you for all of the tips!
You are most welcome! Enjoy!
I use it for street all the time. No issues at all.

Thank you sir😇👍
Question: how long does it take for a camera battery to fully charge? And how long do batteries last
I'm not sure on charging time, I would guess a 1 1/2 to 2 hours, last 400 shots at a guess or 1 hour of video.
Are all the photos taken with the M50?? Awesome video and great photos, I am considering buying one, this helped a lot. Thx!
Some are M50 photos others are not. I used what best demonstrated the concept the best.
this was such a beginner friendly and easy to digest informational video! thank you!!!!!!!
You're so welcome!
Thanks for this video! Any recommendations for taking pictures of cars?
Start wit the kit lens and shoot lots of photos. As you progress you will naturally be drawn to certain focal lengths.
Great information for any new photographer. Thanks Mark this is fabulous information.
Thanks Darren!
Yo, can the eyecup be removed and replaced?! If so, can you make a video how?!
I believe it’s glued on, and not designed to be user replaceable.
