Hello, I have just started watching your videos and am really enjoying them. Spag moss from here, NZ, is farmed rather than taken from forests. I love your boy Pudge, he has such an expressive face. Looking forward to working my way through your many videos.
I love Pudge, he's such a good boy. Great and informative video didnt know much about sphagnum moss or why most of the plant parents I watch use it so thank you for the content
Dunno if you guys gives a damn but if you are bored like me during the covid times you can watch all the latest movies on InstaFlixxer. Been watching with my gf for the last few weeks =)
This was so helpful!!! And so relaxing somehow. I loved watching you take all that moss off the roots while answering questions. I'm always weary of how much moss I can leave on the roots when transplanting to soil because it holds moisture like you said so watching you do it gave me a good idea. Thank you!
This was super helpful! I was trying to see if I was doing wrong by putting in a glass cup instead of plastic because I don't have any, but I think I'm good, thanks for all the tips!
Thank you so much for sharing!! I grow my Peace lilly, Red Anthurium, Golden Pothos, Red Begonia, Coleus, Trandescandia, English Ivy, mini Orchids and an African violet for about a year already and they grie really well esp, the roots!! I do have to repot my plants in moss and I really wanted to know if I can reuse it, I will definitely use your tips, thank you again!! 😊🙏🙏
Love your doggie child! He is adorable! He, right? Interesting and valuable information on the sphagnum moss. Have to say the NZ moss is hard to come by at the moment and the few that are available on Amazon, yeah, those people are doing some serious price gouging!
Fur babies are the best 🥺 Also I hear ya on that! It's definitely hard to come by, and if you do happen to get lucky, your bank account will definitely pay the price 🙃
Hi, I’m a new subscriber! I just found your channel when looking up information about sphagnum moss. This was really helpful! Pudge is absolutely adorable and such a good boy!! I have two Boston Terriers 🐾💙
I'm so happy to hear that!! I feel like there's still so much more to be said, so I'll definitely be doing a part 2. If you have any questions that I didn't cover in this video, please feel free to let me know!!
Awwwwwww the little lambchop lamby is my dogs favorite!!!! He’s killed 6. Also, def inspiring me to keep a plant i have in spagnum bc i cant find any info on it lol
You definitely can! Just keep in mind that boiling does start the decomposition process, but I would much rather have moss that is starting to decompose rather than be wasteful and just throw it away. And once moss has gotten to a point where you can't really use it as a substrate anymore, it makes for a great pot topper, use for moss poles, greenhouse bedding, moss walls, etc!
Charmaine, I loved💕 the very End your Doggie was just the cutest thing HB 2 U 🐶🍰Thk u for all the infro SM 2 video for the nite 1/24/22 nyc🧤👒🪴🇹🇹 it’s me Charmaine againnn 🤣
Yes! It's an automatic spray bottle. I got it on Amazon which I'll link down below: Canada: www.amazon.ca/dp/B085NHX4XN?ref=exp_unplantparenthood_dp_vv_d USA: www.amazon.com/dp/B087TSDMJQ?ref=exp_unplantparenthood_dp_vv_d
Thank you so much for this video. I've been wanting to get into moss propagation/start a tank with sphagnum moss and do a bunch of propagations instead of using multiple water jars. This was so helpful. How do you know when you need to rewater? When it's completely dry?
Hey Erica! Sorry for the incredibly late reply, but I never let my plants in spag moss ever dry out completely. I always make sure it has a bit of moisture in it, but you don't want it soggy!
You can pretty much grow anything in this medium! And I actually prepare a big batch of moss in advance and store it in a clear bin. I just make sure to air it out once in awhile so it's not too damp. I also keep it in a cool dark closet.
Hi!! For the sphagnum moss mix, I would typically use that for plants that has a root system. For prop boxes, sometimes I do LECA or perlite down at the bottom layer, and then top it with moss. And for unrooted cuttings, just moss on its own will suffice!
It really just depends on where I'm keeping them! My spag moss plants inside of greenhouses stay damp for about a week to a week and a half, whereas my spag moss plants in lower humidity require a weekly watering!
I do have an Amazon storefront where I link all my favourite things! But if you’re referring to just my soil stuff, I buy pretty much everything at my local nurseries..
What are some symptoms of a plant that should be transferred from soil to sphag? I have a lot of alocasias and some of them are not thriving right now and I think it would be better to switch them to a sphag blend. I currently use peat, worm castings, perlite, hort charcoal and orchid bark.
Hey Rachel! I'm so sorry for the late reply. :( Spag moss isn't my personal preference for Alocasia growing but I have a lot of luck using it as more of a rehab substrate for them. Right now I have 90% of my alocasias in passive hydro with a mix of lechuzapon, orchiata (fine grade), perlite and slow release osmocote!
@@unplantparenthood thank you 🙏. I see it's only available in canada 😭. I'm in the US, Las Vegas, do you know if it will be available in the US? I checked two other brands like besgrow and supermoss but ever since 2022 started prices of moss increased x3 times. You get way less moss now for the price. It's too expensive and haven't noticed the price go down.
I could really use some help transferring my Monstera Albo from water propagation to sphagnum moss! I’m terrified of the moss causing root rot. How do I prevent this in the moss?
Just make sure to not pack it too tightly, and don't ever let it dry out completely! Adding something like perlite is also very helpful to promote more aeration in the vessel. Good luck!! 🤞 🤞
Hi, interesting video. I have a monstera that is having root rot. I’m trying to save it by rooting it in sphagnum moss. How do I know when to water them? And how much do I water? Hopefully you can answer my questions. Much appreciated 🙏
Sorry to hear you're dealing with some root rot! I usually can tell just by the colour of the moss if it needs to be watered. I use a squeeze bottle or a sprayer to redampen the moss. If you just water like you would with soil, carefully and slowly, that should be totally fine. You basically don't want an excess of water just pooled down at the bottom of the pot, but if you have drainage then the excess will just drain out on its own. I hope that's helpful!
Hi Ashik! You can use sphagnum moss for almost every plant! I've grown some of mine long term for over a year and they've done really well, they just require more fertilizing. It's not my preferred long term medium though!
Hi!! I’ve had lots of my boiled moss come back to life. Once I boil moss twice, I’ll stop using them for substrate and use them for moss poles, exo bedding, etc and some of them have definitely been reawakened! But I do think it just depends how long/much the moss has been boiled, what temp, and also the conditions they’re in after being boiled. I hope that helps!
I don’t care for Chilean moss. I always go for the better Sphagnum moss which is from New Zealand. I just feel it’s a better quality. It’s rated much higher than Chilean and much cleaner. That’s just my experience. I don’t use it too too much anyway because I don’t like how my plants do using it as the main ingredient.
I agree with ya! The New Zealand moss isn't as readily available here unless you buy it online, and the price is so much more. But sometimes I splurge and give some of my more special plants the good stuff 😆 it's so nice to be able to pop open a brick and not have to spend forever picking out twigs and crap
The thought of boiling moss in one of my pots, and using my strainer and any kitchen utensils grosses me out. Personally I’d just buy some new moss instead of boil it
I have a separate pot and strainer for my plants. And since sphagnum moss isn’t a very sustainably harvested resource, reusing it in this hobby is important in my opinion

hi! the spagnum moss mix u made, would you also use that for cuttings, as in a prop box? Or only for rooted plants? :)

Yes! They sell them all over the place here in Canada. They seem to be much less common outside of Canada though 😕
It would be good to have a product buy list.
